Speaker 1:

You're listening to the Absolutely Focus Radio Podcast, episode 9, the truth about stats, facts and tech tools. Hello everyone, it's Daniel the Bug Nelson here on Absolutely Focus Radio. Today I'm flying solo to unpack some important truths about alcohol, its impact and how we can use technology to help us understand and manage these effects. Let's dive into the immediate effects of alcohol on our bodies. When we drink, alcohol acts as a depressant, affecting our central nervous system. It can mess with our coordination and judgment. You might notice slurred speech for a slow reaction time. It's quite a scene when that happens, right, but it doesn't stop there. Our digestive system also takes a hit. Alcohol can irritate the stomach lining, lead to gastritis and for some it doesn't end there. Ulcers can form and that burning sensation after spicy meal that can be heartburn thanks to increased acid production from drinking. And let's talk about blood sugar. Your liver is trying to keep up with the alcohol, preventing it from releasing stored blood. This can lead to hypoglycemia, a fancy term for low blood sugar. Now about heart rate and blood pressure. In the short term, alcohol can give them a boost, but not in a good way, just like pressing the gas pedal without thinking of the brakes and body temperature. That can go up too. Behavior changes are a big one. Alcohol can seriously lower our inhibitions, mess with our mood and cloud our judgment. That's when the not so great decisions are made. It's like our internal compass gets a bit tipsy too.

Speaker 1:

Long term effects these are the heavy hitters. Chronic drinking can lead to liver disease. We're talking fatty liver, hepatitis, fibroids and the big one, cirrhosis. The liver is like the body's personal bartender and it can only handle so much before it starts to break down. Cardiovascular health is up next. If you're a long term heavy drinker, you're looking at increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and a weakened heart muscle. It's like running a car engine on a high non stop. Eventually it's going to wear out. Other risks go up with alcohol consumption. It's linked to an increased risk for several types of cancer, including indeliver, breast esophagus, throat and colon and your brain. It doesn't get all feezy. Chronic use can lead to permanent damage, a decline in mental functioning, an even brain shrinkage. The big one Dependency and addiction. It's categorized by strong craving, loss of control and drinking and nasty withdrawal symptoms.

Speaker 1:

Let's hit some stats. The WHO tells us that alcohol related liver cirrhosis accounts for about 1 in 3 liver cirrhosis deaths. Globally, this is a third folks. The National Cancer Institute states that alcohol use is linked to approximately 3.5% of all cancer deaths in the US and cancer. The risk of developing high blood pressure For those with a heavy poor, a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke goes up. This is serious stuff.

Speaker 1:

Mental health is also on the line. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that long term alcohol use can result to neurological impairments and increased risk of psychiatric conditions like depression and anxiety, and mortality. Globally, the harmful use of alcohol results in 3 million deaths each year. That's more than the population of some countries. According to World Health Organization data. These effects vary greatly depending on how much and how often you drink, your health and your genes. That's why moderation and medical guidance are absolutely vital. As we close today's episode, remember life is about the choices we make. Each choice shapes our path. My story, and the stories of countless others, illustrates the power of change and the importance of making decisions that lead to a better life. Thanks for listening to Episode 9 of Absolutely Focus Radio Podcast. I'm Daniel DeBudd Nelson, reminding you to stay focused on what's important.
