Thanks for listening to The Bird Dog Podcast — and good hunting!
Hey, everyone. Hope you guys are having a great day. And, uh, man, summer's winding up here, kids are going back to school. We're getting close to hunting season and getting those dogs in the field. And man, I am looking forward to it. Getting a little crispness in the mornings, a little fall, cool temperatures in the air, that is, um, that's getting exciting of things. So hey, in this podcast, I sit down with Tim Brown. He is, um, has Beyond the Point podcast. Uh, that's a great podcast. Really encourage you guys to go ahead and give him a listen if you're into bird dogs and hunting. And if you're listening to this, I'm sure you are. So, uh, check out Tim Brown. He's also The Bearded Uplander on Instagram. Uh, we had a great conversation. And, uh, man, Tim's... He's a passionate guy. He's, he's, he's down to earth. He's gonna tell you how it is. And, uh, he loves his dogs. He loves Uh, bird hunting with him, and he's doing some cool stuff. He's really big into men's, uh, mental health. Um, I think men's mental health in our society in general, we're just supposed to be the, the tough guys that, uh... And, uh, and we are, but, and we're not too big into sharing our feelings or thoughts or when times get hard. And for all of us, we- times will get hard or, or do, do get hard. So, um, we're not all alone. We're not perfect, and we are mortals, and, and life is hard, and a lot of us deal with mental issues. But, um, uh, Tim is a really big advocate of helping, helping fellow hunters out and helping fellow friends out and guys with mental health, um, issues. So that was cool to learn about from him, and then we talked about shotguns, and we talked about dogs and his background on how he got into this whole, uh, uh, the Bearded Uplanders thing and Beyond the Point podcast. So if you guys wanna learn more about him and more about his background and all these, and we go into a bunch of different subjects. I'm not gonna tell you what they are 'cause it's exciting, and you gotta listen to it and find it in the podcast. Go ahead and, uh, uh, listen to this podcast. I hope you guys enjoy it. Um, and as always, check out, um, our partners in the show links. We really appreciate that. Give us a follow on, uh, Utah, uh, if you go to Utah Bird Dog Training on Instagram, that's our training, um, training social media thing. Uh, we're gonna try to do better at getting some, uh, continued posts on there. And then Fieldbred Golden Retrievers is our, our breeding website for hunting goldens. We are kinda taking a pause on taking deposits right now. We really appreciate the interest, but we kinda have some younger females that are transitioning into, um, our program and putting titles on them and health clearances. And so there's a teeny bit of lag on our breeding right there with those. And then follow us on The Bird Dog Podcast on Instagram. And if you have any questions or you wanna be, um, on the show or, and you have some cool stuff you think you could share or you have training questions, um, send us, um, an email to thebirddogpodcast@gmail.com, and we'll check those out. And, uh, maybe we'll have you on the show or we'll, um, if you got a cool product or something like that, or, um, if you have a training question, you can go ahead and send it in there, and we'll try to get that training question answered for you. So as always, appreciate you guys listening. I know your time is valuable, and, uh, hope, um, the show will be entertaining and also, um, instructional. And, um, we'll, we'll see you in the next one. Have a great day, guys, and enjoy.
TyceHey, folks. Welcome to the Birddog podcast. My name is Ty Erickson. I will be your host today of the show, and I got my friend on here, Tim Brown, from the Bearded Uplander and Beyond the Point radio, uh, podcast, radio show, podcast that we call it, Tim?
Tim BrownYeah, podcast. I, I
TycePodcast
Tim Brownup on my thing here. Hold on just a second. I don't know why that notification came up. That was weird.
TyceAre we good still?
Tim BrownYeah, I just... It came
TyceDo we need to start over or are we still good?
Tim Brownnope,
TyceOkay.
Tim Browngood.
TyceWe're raw, we're, we're raw here, people
Tim BrownWell, yeah, yeah, it's just a couple of j- just a couple of dummies trying to run soc-
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownto run, uh,
TyceTechnology.
Tim BrownYeah. I'm just a bird hunter. I don't know about this stuff, man.
TyceI'm a dog trainer, man, so we're in the same, we're in the same two rookies trying to figure this out. So anyhow, at least, at least we're passionate about what we do, so that makes it easy.
Tim BrownThat's exactly right
TyceSo, um, okay. Well, I want-- Tim, grateful for your time. Thank you for coming on here. I know you're a busy guy, um, and I'm excited to get to know you better and hear more about you. I've been following you on social media, and we have a common friend, uh, Ben Proctor with, uh, BPro Kennels. He's a great guy and, um, so we'll probably, maybe we'll dive into that a little bit too. But, uh, give us, just give us a background about you and, and, uh, tell me, tell me about your hunting. I guess, where, as a hunter, where did you start? Where do you-- Have you been hunting since you were a little kid? Where you get, did you get into hunting later? Let's first talk about hunting, so.
Tim BrownOkay. Uh, so my dad and my brothers, I've got two older brothers and then my dad, and, and my brothers are 10 plus years older than me. So they were, they were hunting when they were younger too, and then when I got young enough, they were practically adults, so I would just tag along with them. And I'd more, more than times, or more times than not, I would sit in the car while they went out and walked a draw in eastern Iowa and, and that's how you hunted pretty much back then, was there was draws and, and there was big chunks of CRP too back then. But it was mostly just little walks, and I'd sit there and wait and they'd come back or, or then when I got old enough, I would walk with them. And, then finally, you know, 10, 12 years old, started to carry a gun, started to walk with them and, that was in the early... late, late '80s, early '90s when I started doing that. So it
TyceOkay
Tim Brownin the peak of the CRP boom in Iowa where there was literally pheasants everywhere. I mean, Iowa, Iowa rivaled South Dakota for pheasant numbers in,
TyceWow
Tim Brownthose years. And then, uh, the CRP started coming out, and it just kept getting harder and harder and harder to hunt birds, and they were just disappearing. We had a really bad storm in '97, the year that I graduated, that, really put a hurting on the bird population back
TyceMm.
Tim Brownand it never really recovered for the longest time just because of farming practices and, and the way things go, and prices and all that stuff. So they're starting to come back now. There's people that are putting more, uh, acres into set-aside and stuff like that. It's just, it's not near what it was in, like, the early '90s, right?
TyceWhat, what were they pulling the CRP? What were they, what are they replacing the CRP with?
Tim BrownYou went right back to corn and beans.
TyceOkay
Tim Brownuh, in the '80s when they, when they made that program, the CRP program, it was to offset the surplus of grain that we had. We had too much, and it was driving the price down.
TyceSo they paid farmers to put it into CRP, right? Is that what it was?
Tim Brownthat's how the
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownlike, kinda took off,
TyceYeah
Tim Brownmy recollection anyway. I mean, like, don't quote me on anything. I'm not
TyceSure.
Tim Brownon this stuff, but
TyceCheck the facts, folks.
Tim Brownyeah. Yeah,
Tycewe're gonna... We're sharing best of our knowledge.
Tim BrownYeah, yeah. So when that stuff started going away, um, the CRP program took a dive. I mean, it went from, like, 30... I can't remember. It was, like, 32-some million acres of ground went down to, like, 24
TyceOh, wow
Tim BrownAnd it's a 10-year program, so, like, it's only... You're only out of circul- or out of, you know, uh, production for 10 years, and then it comes up again. And if you wanna enroll it again, a new price for the... it per acre, and it's a new... it... Everything's new, right?
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownoff of what your, um, revenue is on the ground or whatever. I, I, I don't know the technical terms of it, but it goes by what production is on your ground before, you
Tycecorn out there, is, is it silage they're harvesting or is it more dr- they're letting it dry out on the stalk and then harvest it? Plant field cor- or yeah, what are they doing with
Tim Brownit's f- it's field corn. It just
TyceOkay.
Tim Brownlot of it goes to, like, feed for cattle or hogs or whatever,
TyceYeah
Tim BrownIowa's got more... Like the c- couple counties up by me have more hogs than they do people.
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownand, like,
TyceOh, wow.
Tim Brownin the... More hogs in those counties than the whole state of Iowa has people, kind of thing. So
TyceOh, wow. Okay. Lot of hog
Tim BrownA
Tycefarming out there
Tim Brownand there's a lot of beef, too. It's not near as big, but there's a lot of dairy up here, too. So, like, they'll take the silage off or they'll take, you know, they'll chop all kinds of stuff. So it's a little, little more diverse up here, but it's
TyceMhm.
Tim Brownit's still mostly corn and beans. And then some gets taken for ethanol. I mean, everything is... It,
TyceJa
Tim Brownrevolves around that ethanol stuff. So it's, it's a losing battle, you know, in the long run. We're losing more acres than we know what to do with. And I mean, you can tell in some parts of the state that the pheasant population, it shows it. And our deer population, it shows it.
TyceHm.
Tim BrownI mean, when you think Iowa, you're thinking big deer, right?
TyceJa,
Tim Brownit just, it's going the wrong way. We've had, we've had some meetings and, and stuff like that, that they want public input, and there just isn't a whole lot of deer in certain counties, trying to figure out why. And, you know, the EHD comes, and it, it, it really hits us hard when it's, when it happens. But, um, that's just another aspect of it or whatever. We can talk about that later. But going
TyceSure. Is the farming just... Yeah, sorry, real quick. Is the f- the farming is just too clean, right? Is that kinda allows the birds not to have the cover and the nesting, and then that affects everything? Yeah.
Tim Brownmean, it, it's great... Corn and beans are great cover in the summer
TyceSure. Yeah
Tim Browndon't have anything that can get them in the summer. It's when you pick it all, and then it's just bare dirt
TyceFair ground, yeah.
Tim Brownthe winter is the time that they need
TyceHammers are the worst. Yeah. Yep, yep
Tim Brownand that's the good thing about the, like this northwest corner of the state. There's a lot of crick lines and a lot of draws that in the spring, they fill up with water too much, and you can't really just, like, tile
TyceClean them out
Tim Brownclean it out. So there's always gonna be something there. It's just we're gonna have a bad winter one of these years, and it's really gonna sock us
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownjust because they don't have any of that thermal cover. And the wood lots help a lot. Like, everybody that's got an acreage usually has a wood lot,
TyceYeah
Tim Brownthere's a lot getting torn out now for people building new houses and stuff. I mean, it just, just, it's... 10 years that I've lived up here, it's, it's considerably different. Like,
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownknew that were there that you drive by it, you would never think that there was something there, and it used to hold hundreds of pheasants, and it's just gone. And it doesn't
TyceHmm.
Tim Brownlike it's gone, right?
TyceYeah, but they do seem, they're, they seem to be doing a little better the last couple years though.
Tim Brownyeah, our, our pheasant population, I've hunted up here for 20 years, and it's never really, like fell way off.
TyceMm-hmm
Tim Brownjust because it's a little hillier, it's a little nastier, and they can't, they can't, like get a whole lot, um, that they haven't already gotten, right? So it, the, the cover's still there. There's a lot of farmers up here that, that are pheasant hunters too that
TyceJa
Tim Brownto keep some ground around. So like that core area that they have, yeah, there's gonna... You might not be able to hunt it, but that's just a place for all them birds to go in that real nasty time of the season,
TyceJa, ja.
Tim Brownspread out to the s- the thinner stuff earlier in the season when it's nice out, you know?
TyceMm-hmm
Tim Brownthen when it gets really nasty, they go, they go back to that. So there,
TyceCool.
Tim Brownjust, it is what it is, you know?
TyceYeah, cool
Tim Brownuh, so going back to, to how I grew up, um, I got out of bird hunting all together in the late two... or the late '90s, early 2000s. I, my brother lives
TyceThose were probably some dark years, huh?
Tim BrownUh, yeah, I mean, it was, we just, we just foc- refocused onto deer hunting instead, right?
TyceOkay.
Tim Brownum, down south of Des Moines, my brother lives down there, and we got into deer hunting pretty good, and had, had some really good ground that we hunted. Shot some really good deer. But I didn't, didn't really... I'm not really a guy that can sit still very often. I don't like just, just sitting in one place.
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownI always wanted to, and then working with one of my best friends at a, at a warehouse in Cedar Rapids, and that year, it would've been 2007, of January 2007, he brought me up here to his family, family farm, and it was the last weekend of the season, it was in January, and we shot the piss out of them. There was birds everywhere and I'm like, "Okay, this,
TyceThis is what I've been missing.
Tim Brownthis is what I've been missing." And the bad thing wa- like I got done, we got done, and I'm like, "You know what? This, I, the, I, I wanna do this." 'Cause they had, my buddies had really great dogs back then,
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownIf I want my own dog, I wanna do this. I'm, I'm, that's it, I'm done. I'm not gonna go deer hunting anymore. I'm going up there to go bird hunting."
TyceJa.
Tim BrownAnd so that spring I got Gus, which was my wirehaired that, my first dog that I had. And
TyceSo previous to this, sorry, I'm gonna cut in here if that's all right. Previous, you, you didn't have dogs growing up or you did have dogs growing up?
Tim BrownWe did, we did, but they were outside dogs and it was, you know, they're hunting dogs that get out, know, four, five times a year, you know what I mean? And
Tyceう ー ん。 う ー ん。 Yeah
Tim Brownthe time or we're, we're running working dogs. I mean, you're not, you're not going crazy with it, but like they were just, they were just
TyceKind of a dog that you take out here and there and just if it, they found some birds and just kind of rough training and stuff makes sense.
Tim Brownand it, it,
TyceI got a fly around here
Tim Brownyou know, you didn't have to work that hard for birds back then, 'cause
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownliterally, there was birds everywhere.
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownit wasn't the... Like, you didn't have to have really good
Tycegood dogs. Yeah
Tim Brownto worry about, you had to worry about, you know, bumping birds because you could go another 20 yards and there's gonna be 10 more. You know what
TyceSure. Yeah, yeah
Tim BrownSo it, it, it, it went that way. But then when I got him, I just said I, I was done. And we went up there, uh, we
TyceWas he a Griff or what was he?
Tim BrownNope, it was just a straight wire
TyceOh, a stray warrior. Okay
Tim Brownstory of all that was my brother had really good short hairs, um, he gonna have puppies, and my brother and one of our good friends, one of our good friends had the male that was breeding to him.
TyceУгу
Tim Brownchoice of litter, 'cause that was the, you know, that's how you do it when you breed dogs. uh, then my other brother was getting a puppy also, and then I was gonna get one. Well, she had complications. She got septic. She lost
TyceOh, man.
Tim Brownhalf of the puppies. She had three puppies total. So I was out. I was the
TyceMm.
Tim Brownout, which was fine.
TyceMm
Tim Brownmy buddy Randy, Randy, his bro- or his cousin grew wire, or raised wire hairs, and I knew the, the family, so I wasn't like, like, "Yeah, that, perfect. I'll, I'll take one of those." And the crazy thing is, like, everybody asks, like, "How do you pick out a dog?" And all this and that. I didn't see Gus um, he was brought to me. I,
TyceOK
Tim BrownI told Terry's dad, 'cause Terry's dad raised dogs for, I don't know, my entire life. I don't,
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownhe had been raising dogs. I said, "John, just whatever one that you would take, that's the one I want."
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownSo he brought me Gus and, and it was, it, it was done. I was
TyceHow old was he when you got-- how old was Gus when you got him?
Tim Browneight, eight weeks. He
TyceOh, eight weeks. Okay, so he was a puppy. He didn't have him. Okay.
Tim Browna baby.
TyceYeah
Tim Brownbrought him up 'cause he was coming back. 'Cause they live in Missouri, so he was bringing him back up for, I don't know what it was, their family reunion or something, and he brought him up and then it, yeah, I was done. was it. It over. Didn't wanna do, I don't wanna do anything else than that.
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownyeah.
TyceWhat made you decide to get a wire hair over a GSP?
Tim BrownIt was just the,
TyceThat you knew him?
Tim Brownthat I
TyceYeah
Tim BrownI knew the dogs, I knew how good, you know, the, they were, um, high retrieving ability, you know,
Tyceう ー ん、 う ー ん。 う ー ん。 Good
Tim Brownout now. Like, the kennel that I got Mack and, uh, Ansel from, his dogs are... I don't, I don't think that I've ever to work with him on retrieving. They j- it's just natural, and that's how he breeds them. Like, he's not gonna breed anything that doesn't have that natural...
Tyceretrieve. Yeah.
Tim Brownyeah. And, you know, with the short hair, that's kinda sometimes, that's kind of a hard thing to,
TyceSure. Yeah.
Tim Brownright? So that, that's kinda how I pick them out. Like, um, Terry's actually, uh, we're trying to get his female bred that would be what would it be? Great niece or niece or something. line's still there, so we're trying
TyceMm-hmm. Mm-hmm. When did you, when did you pick up Gus again? What year was that?
Tim BrownIt would've been 2007. It would've been
Tyce2007.
Tim BrownYep
TyceSo that's nine- yeah, 19 years ago or whatever.
Tim BrownYeah.
TyceGosh
Tim Brownand then the crazy thing, this dog that we're talking about, I can't remember if it's his dad, or her dad or her grandpa, uh, he lived to be, um, 17
TyceHoly cow. Gus is,
Tim Brownbe
TyceGus...
Tim Brownwas, yeah, littermate brother, was 17 and
TyceWow. Wow
Tim BrownGus lived to be 15, so yeah, it
TyceThat's some good longevity in those, that, that line.
Tim Brownnever understood how, how, uh, some dogs go that long
TyceYeah
Tim Brownout of the same breed, right?
TyceIt does seem like, it does seem like the pointers, like short hairs and stuff tend to live a little longer than like your retrievers. Your labs and those, that bre- those breeds, you know? It's, I mean, longest I've ever had is 13 and a half and, but most of them are passing between 12 and 13 on average I'd say, you know? So you start getting 14, fi- I mean, that's, that's pretty amazing that they can make it that
Tim Brownc- the crazy thing is Gus hunted 13 years. I mean,
TyceWow.
Tim Browngood 13
Tycegonna ask you how his longevity, like at the end, how he, you know...
Tim Brownwas cherry-picking. You know what I
TyceYeah
Tim Brownyear we cherry-picked a lot, 'cause that would've been Mack's first year was his last year.
TyceOh, okay.
Tim Brownso Mack was, he was thrown right into the fire of, of everything. So he, did really well at, you know, he was eight months when, when hunting season started and, and the first bird that fell, he went and retrieved it. And
TyceTo Max a short hair?
Tim BrownYep, Mack's a shorthair.
TyceYou have all short hairs now, right?
Tim BrownYep, yep,
TyceOkay
Tim BrownAnd they're bro- they're actually brothers, but not litter mate brothers, but same
TyceOh, okay.
Tim BrownTwo years apart.
TyceTwo years apart. And then you had...
Tim BrownThree years apart.
TyceOh, three years apart. I know you had one you lost from something, right? On solution
Tim Brownca- uh, she had a, a tumor on right where her throat and her meet.
TyceHmm.
Tim Brownwe were in, we were in North Dakota, and she was... We'd just got to North Dakota, and she was acting funny, but she's always been a funny dog anyway. Like, she was just not herself.
TyceMm-hmm
Tim Brownwe were hunting, and she started throwing up, and it was all just nasty stuff. And I'm like, "What is going
TyceWas a, tell, like was it blood or was it pus? Like what, or like acid looking stuff?
Tim Brownacid reflux
TyceYeah, yeah.
Tim Brownbile and stuff
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownD- and she ate, so it wasn't like it was, like, out of the realm of, like, she just
TyceWell, what was their energy like?
Tim Brownor It,
TyceYeah.
Tim BrownIt wasn't, like, through the roof or anything, but she was,
TyceStill doing the work.
Tim BrownYeah, she was
Tyceyeah. Mm-hmm
Tim Brownshe really liked that. didn't like when we were hunting, like, cattails or anything like that. She liked that wide open, short grass. She, she thrived in that. She hunted better when she was in that kinda condition. She was just a weird dog. She'd,
TyceHmm. Kind of quirky personality or what?
Tim Brownyep,
TyceYeah
Tim Brownshe wanted to hunt and sometimes she's like, really feel like it today. I'm just not gonna, you
TyceI'll just kinda walk by you here, hang out.
Tim Brownyeah, typical females. You know how that is. yeah, so, so then sh- you know, we got back, and she just, when we got back she just started losing the weight, and it just was just She wouldn't eat anything, and
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownand they did a, they did a scan and, and it was, it was just growing around the whole throat, and it was just cutting everything off. So she wasn't comfortable, and then she got down to I- it was was all still there, like, mentally and loved on me, you know, d- everything that she usually did, but it was like, I can't watch her wither away to nothing and,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownit,
TyceWhat kind of cancer was it?
Tim BrownI don't know. We didn't, we didn't
TyceOkay. Dig into it too much
Tim Brownshe was almost 13 years old at that time,
TyceOh, she was 13. I was gonna ask your age. Yeah.
Tim Brownshe was 12, but it was like, you know And it was a big mass, and it's like, it's
TycePut her, you don't wanna put her through that. Yeah
Tim Brownyou put chemo in a 13-year-old, 12-year-old dog, it's just not gonna
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownwhat I mean? It's
TyceA lot of money, she's old. Yeah, it's not, yeah
Tim Brownher enjoy the last, you know, week that we had together, that we did have together, than be just sick and miserable for two months, and then it not even work, you know?
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownyou know, you And that's the hardest thing about being a dog owner. You gotta make that decision.
TyceSure.
Tim Brownthey're not gonna, they're not gonna not, you know,
TyceYeah
Tim Brownup for you, you know what I mean? So it's like,
TyceIt's like people when you see someone go through cancer and then they, you know, you kinda wanna, you feel, you wanna remember them for how they were, not like sometimes the last few months of their life when they're just withered away to nothing and they're not, you know. So
Tim BrownI'd
Tycenot that
Tim Brownto
Tycepeople and dogs are different, but
Tim Brownyeah. Well, you hate to be selfish about it, right? Especially
TyceYeah
Tim Brownyeah, I wish she was You know, it's kinda like my mom. I wish she was still here, but the last three years of her life was just absolute hell and it's like, I
TyceHmm.
Tim Brownanybody. So, you know, you have to m- you know, be a little selfish and, and you just have to not be that way, just
TyceMake hard choices. Yeah. Hmm
Tim Brownyeah. So did that and then, um, I got her back and I thought, "You know what? I gotta put her with Gus," 'cause that was the spots that she liked to hunt was that short grass prairie out in, out in
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownAnd I honestly think all my dogs are gonna be there, just because it's my favorite field in the entire country
TyceThat's cool
Tim BrownAnd like I was telling Tyler on his podcast, Tyler Webster, I was telling him, I was like, him and, and Aaron are one of, two of six people that know that exact spot.
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownI'm not, I'm not like taking n- you know, anybody
TyceIt's a special spot.
Tim BrownYeah,
TyceYeah, yeah. It's kinda like holy ground, holy ground for you almost, right?
Tim BrownYep, and there's people that
TyceYeah.
Tim BrownI mean, it's public
TyceSure
Tim Brownyou know, it's always busy in there, but like legitimately I've never hunted that field in 20 years and not shot a grouse out of it.
TyceHmm. Hmm.
Tim Brownthat I visit that field, I shoot a grouse out of that
TyceThat's cool. Yeah
Tim Brownand, and it's, it's right in the heart of the, the grasslands, so it's,
TyceMm-hmm。Yeah。
Tim Brownyeah, so I d- I just You know, like we had, like Tyler and I talked about it on the show. If you Did you, did you watch the flush episode
TyceI didn't see it, no.
Tim BrownOh man, wait till it
TyceOh, yeah.
Tim Brownout.
TyceOh, okay
Tim Browntold him, I was like, "It's divine intervention." There's no doubt in my mind because we were sitting there doing the interview and there was 15 grouse that flew over like a, you know, like a, a air show.
TyceOh, really?
Tim Brownflew right over us while they're talking to or while they're doing the interview, flew right
TyceOh.
Tim BrownAnd then the roost, the pheasants are getting up behind me in the cattails and I'm like, can't tell me that it's not..." Oh,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownin and there's a lec- that I've, I've hunted there 20 years and I've never seen chickens on that lec
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownsu- or, or in the, in the fall. There's
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownout there.
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownwere out there fighting and just,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownit's like yeah, there's
TyceIt's a way God's like, "Hey, we're-- I'm, I'm paying attention to you and your feelings, and I know, I'm aware of you." I think God, God's definitely in the details, man. We don't realize how much, you know, that divine intervention is there, but yeah
Tim Brownabout it. And we had a, a, I mean, it was November, and we're shooting birds off of that are four yards in front of us. It's
TyceJa.
Tim Brownprairie chickens don't cooperate in November, and they were,
TyceJa
Tim Brownthey were all over us. So it's, it's like, you know,
TyceThat's awesome.
Tim Brownway and it was awesome, so
TyceI'll have to watch it. So is it, is that on YouTube somewhere then right now or is it, is it not? Oh, okay
Tim Brownbe... So it's the Outdoor Channel. S- you
TyceOh, the Outdoor Channel now.
Tim BrownChannel, and then it, it aired a couple weeks ago, so it'll be, like, probably October before it comes. Because they run it one- they run their episodes through one time,
TyceHmm.
Tim Brownand do it again. And then in January it'll be on YouTube. They'll have it
TyceOh, okay. Off the watts that one
Tim Brownhave to have, they have to have 13 weeks of, of shows, me, on the Outdoor Channel,
TyceBefore they throw it on YouTube. Yeah.
Tim Brownit on YouTube. Yep.
TyceYeah
Tim Brownreally good. I mean, it's, it was, it was, they did a good job. They did a really good job of it, and there was hundreds of birds, if not thousands of birds that we saw that weekend.
TyceHmm. What were you guys cha- mostly sh- was it sharptails, prairie chickens, pheasants? What el-
Tim BrownMostly
Tycechicken. Okay
Tim Browndid shoot a, I did shoot a sharpie, um, on the And they're all mixed in there all the way through, and then we shot a bunch of pheasants too, but I
TyceJa,
Tim Brownyou
Tyceja
Tim BrownDakota, you might as well shoot some pheasants. I mean,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownand there's a
TyceYou know, I, I've never made it out to those grass- I need to get out there. I've never killed a prairie chicken. Um, I, you know, I, I kill so many pheasants in training where I've been training dogs for 20 years. It's kind of like generally... I still love upland hunting. I have two set- I have two red setters, um, that are awesome, but I s- I've pushed a little more into the waterfowl just 'cause it's all the handling and the blind retrieves, and it's just f- I mean, I enjoy it all, but it's kind of where it's become my occupation. You know, I killed a lot of birds over dog. It's, it's taken a little bit of the sting out of it, yeah, or the ex- ex-excitement, you know. But I still, I mean, I gotta get out there 'cause I have clients who are, "Hey, you gotta come out there and hunt birds with me." And I big game hunt. I big game hunt, too, so it's just a pull of time, you know, but
Tim BrownThe,
Tyceeverything
Tim BrownYeah, like you gotta, you gotta balance it out, and sometimes things have to be sacrificed,
TyceYeah, yeah.
Tim BrownYeah.
TyceBut we, yeah, so I usually... Yeah, go ahead
Tim BrownI say, I do that a lot because I've gotten a lot of invites to go elk hunting and, and, you know, hunting and stuff like that, and I just... I'm usually getting ready, and it's like, "Yeah, I really want to," but a
TyceYes.
Tim Brownthat s- the week after that hunt, I gotta be right back out here with the dogs, and I'm like, "I'm not pulling the dogs out here
TyceYeah.
Tim Browndoing an elk hunt," you know? And
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownjust
TyceYeah, where you're connected in this community, I'm sure you could hunt probably anywhere pre- I'm sure you have plenty of invites and people. You could go hunt full-time, you know,
Tim BrownYeah.
Tycework done too.
Tim BrownUh, yeah, yeah. It's, the, there's a lot of people that, that offer the invites, that's for sure, and a lot of
TyceThat's an awesome community.
Tim Brownthere's some of them that I'm gonna take up on it because they're in places that I've never went. So I'm like, "Okay,
TyceOh, for sure.
Tim Brownlet's
TyceYeah
Tim Browna little bit down there and see what we can get into," right?
TyceYeah. Well, even if it's the same bird, right? You're-- It's not the-- It's the people, it's the experience, it's the dogs, it's a new place, new terrain, you know, the new sights. And s- you know, it's, you're s- hunting maybe with mountain peaks behind you where, you know, other places you're hunting in the marsh or open grasslands. So it's just, that's all, that's all part of the experience.
Tim Brownthe whole, that's the whole thing for me too is it... I've gotten to the point where I've shot
TyceEnough birds.
Tim Brownbirds I've shot. Like, want to go, I was talking to Travis Frank about this today. I, I was like, "I want to go and enjoy it with people that are like-minded or my buddies or whatever," you know? I want to go enjoy it and, and have all of the extra stuff, right? I want all of the stuff that's not just us going out and shooting birds. We can go out and shoot two birds and I'm gonna be just as happy. You know, unless we miss a bunch of birds, then I'm not gonna be happy with myself, but like, we can just, you know, say we get two points, two, two birds fly up, we shoot two birds, and that's all we got for the day, I'm perfectly fine with
TyceYou're still having a good time.
Tim BrownYeah. I, I want to, I want to do all the things because I don't care what anybody says, only have so many days.
TyceThat's for sure, man
Tim Brownso many days in a lifetime, and I don't want to focus on one thing. I want to enjoy everything. Like, our opening day here in Iowa is that's a holy day. That's like, you know, Easter Sunday or Christmas Day like, for us. It's like, we're going
TyceThat's blocked out every year. Don't mess around with that date.
Tim Browneven think about...
TyceYeah
Tim Brownjust a little side note. My niece is getting married this year, and she calls her dad, she's like, "Is this date gonna mess you up at all?" And it was October 10th, and he's like, "It's not gonna mess me up, but you better call your Uncle Tim 'cause that's, that's a pretty big day." So
Tyceyou want him there, if you want him there, don't plan it on that date. Yeah
Tim Brownwell, she, she called me and she goes, "This is the only time that I can get this place." I go, "Carissa, you... I will be there. You're
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownmarried once. I will be there, so don't worry about what day it's on. But man, it sucks, 'cause that's North Dakota's opener." It's like, damn it. it, I'm not gonna make it to North Dakota this year unless I go later, so. But I'm like, you know what? It's fine.
TyceSure. Yeah
Tim BrownI gotta do, you know, I, I'm gonna do anything for, know, my
TyceSure, family. Yeah, family and people for... Yeah, I have a niece too. Funny, the same thing. I'm supposed to be in Idaho deer hunting and elk hunting, and she's of course like, "Oh, my wedding's on Saturday." I'm like, "Oh, well that's the opener of my deer and elk hunt, but I guess I'll go Sun- I'll head out Sunday."
Tim BrownYep, and, and that's just what, you know, 'cause we have like... with this Beyond the Point thing that I'm doing, we have, um, some hunts lined up and some, some stuff with Scheels that we've got lined up where I gotta be at the Scheels stores and whatnot. Well, I gotta miss the one in North Dakota because just, you know, that's the wedding, so it's like I'm not
TyceYeah
Tim Brownfor that. So it's like everything going on, it's like trying to schedule around things is just
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownman. It's
TyceYeah. Well, tell us about, so the Bearded Uplander, that's where you kinda got started filming, right? So were you just, like, starting to film for yourself? You're like, "Ah, I just wanna film my hunts and throw them on social media," or what was your kinda thoughts behind it?
Tim Brownoriginally when I got my first GoPro, it was just to have... Because I knew Gus wasn't gonna be there forever, it was just to have stuff for myself.
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownwhen you put it on, like, social media, it was there, and you can always go back and look at
TyceSure. Yeah. Instead of dig it out of your old hard drive or whatever.
Tim BrownYeah. So I started doing that, and then, when he passed away... Well, when he was getting sick is when I really started the page and getting... He didn't get sick, but he, like, got really run down or whatever, and then we couldn't hunt anymore. I'm like, "That's when I wanted to start, you know, I need to this with everybody because
TyceMhm.
Tim Browngoes through this," and I didn't want anybody else to, you know, not have some place that, like, I'm going through the same thing that you're going
TyceJa,
Tim BrownSo it's
Tyceja
Tim Brownyou know. And then, um, just kept posting stuff about that, about men's mental health, like that, and it just started getting traction and traction and, man, it's gone absolutely freaking berserk.
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownAnd,
Tyceif you are, so
Tim Brownevery day about people thanking me for, you know, certain things or, or the, the bad messages of people telling me that I shoot too low of birds and just it's... You gotta take the good with the
TyceJa
Tim Brownand the good far outweighs the bad, right? So
TyceOh, for sure.
Tim Brownanywhere, right?
TyceUnfortunately, sometimes we focus on the bad. Uh, it just naturally we've hit that. We're like, "Dude, why do you have to say that comment?" Or... But I think it's just part of putting yourself out there. People are gonna... People are comfortable. They're gonna make comments, and it's just... And I don't know why peop- it's not, it's not my style. Like, I'm like, "Dude, this guy's just trying to do his best, you know, with life and everything. Why do we, why do we gotta knock him down? And no one's perfect, you know?"
Tim Brownand my style of hunting is not the same style as somebody else. And I don't care how you hunt, as long as
TyceMm-hmm. Yeah, it's your-- Yeah
Tim Brownlike, like me, my dogs will hold until flush usually, and that's we like to do because we're hunting mostly wild birds. And if you get a cripple, you're... a son of a bitch to find it.
TyceMhm, ja
Tim Brownlike max on them the whole time that they come, or, you know, that they're up in the air and coming down.
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownhave any worry about anybody that hunts with me about shooting something too low.
TyceYeah, yeah, yeah
Tim BrownThe bad thing is when you have a GoPro, which I got mine right here, when you have your GoPro and
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownhat, that camera has to be pointed down
TyceDown
Tim Brownto get the right angle so you can see the bird and your gun and everything.
TyceIt's gonna make everything look low
Tim Brownyeah, it does, dude. And, and you can see my gun going like that. And, you know, the camera's poin- But people just can't, can't figure it out, and it's like, I don't really care.
TyceSure.
Tim Brownknow? It's not affecting me. Like, I'm never gonna have... My dog's never gonna be in jeopardy,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownyou know.
TyceYeah
Tim Browncome on, people, use a little common sense and know
TyceYeah.
Tim BrownLike, you can see the whole barrel of my gun.
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownknow, the camera's pointed down, and you see the whole rib.
TyceYeah
Tim Brownthe whole view of what I'm looking down the
TyceYeah.
Tim BrownSo
Tycefilm it from your belly button, dude.
Tim Brownit's just, yeah. It just, whatever. it's just, you know, it's just the way it is. But the good far outweighs the bad,
TyceFor sure.
Tim BrownYeah.
TyceSo tell me about men...
Tim Brownstarted. And,
TyceT-
Tim Brownthe mental health thing is what I was gonna get
TyceYeah. Tell me about that. What-- I mean, that's obviously something that's important to you, and I, I don't really know much ab-about that. Tell me... I can tell that's a big part of your life or something you want, you
Tim BrownYes. So
Tycetalk
Tim Brownwas a really rough year for me just in general.
TyceOkay
Tim Browngoing through just all kinds of BS and, you know, you're, you're dealing with a, a parent that had passed away, and I was really close with my mom, and just dealing with all that. And I couldn't take it anymore, I was gonna, I was gonna end it, dude. I was gonna, I was gonna kill myself. Well, gonna take a bunch of pills, down on the couch, I had the bottle open, and I went to put them in my mouth, and Gus came over, knocked everything out of my hand, and just sat there, like right on my face the whole time. Just
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownthere. Would not leave, would not move an inch. I sat there for, I don't know, eight, nine hours, and then that was it. I was like, "Nope. We're gonna make something to help everybody out," and just like, "This is my renew." You know what I mean? This
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Browns- we're starting over. Everything's starting over. And then that's what it's done, and then slowly snowballed into what we're doing now, and it's just,
TyceHmm.
Tim BrownI can help people and, and try to help them out, you know?
TyceWhat do you do? Uh, thanks for sharing that story. That's super... That's personal, man. I had, I had two uncles on both sides of my family commit suicide, and I've seen-- And I was a young kid, and I remember seeing that ripple effect through our family, through their kids, you know. So I'm glad, obviously, you're here. I'm just getting to know you, but you're-- I mean, you're, you're a blessing, I'm sure, to lots of people's lives and can, you know, relate. A lot of peop- I mean, we all on the outside look like we're fine, right? But most of us have mental issues you know, so,
Tim BrownEverybody's got demons of some sort. I
Tyceyeah
Tim BrownAnd, and I don't care what anybody says, everybody's got them. You've got
TyceSure.
Tim Brownsomething, and if there isn't somebody like, like us that are willing to put themselves out and say, "Hey, I'm going through shit too,
TyceHmm
Tim Brownjust know that I-- you can come anytime." I'll take a message that if somebody says something and they're struggling, that- that's the message that I'm going to answer. know, I, and I check all my DMs a- as much as I can, but it's like, I don't wanna miss that one guy. You know what
TyceJa.
Tim BrownOr that one girl that's going through the worst thing in their life and, and you know, I experience with it, so I know a little bit about, how I made it through, and it was, it legitimately was a dog.
TyceYeah. Amazing
Tim Brownand, and just relying on that dog and, you know, and then it just... You know, we just started building stuff and, and now that I have the means of, of doing all of this stuff on top of it, we're just gonna keep, you know, we're just gonna keep going. There's just no, no reason to stop, so
TyceI'm sure there's, I'm sure it was divine and God working through your dog, you know, to, to stop you, you know, knowing that you could be a blessing to other people's lives.
Tim Brownyeah, and my mom was right there with him probably.
TyceYeah
Tim Brownthat probably told him too, "You need to, you need to, uh, do something with this dog to make it so it won't happen." So
Tyce100%. I'm a firm believer that family's there to,
Tim BrownDude
Tyceon the other side to help us, to watch over us, you know, guardian angels or whatever you wanna call them, you know
Tim Brownit's the craziest thing that, like, you can-- pay attention, you can see it. You can literally see it all over if you pay attention
TyceSo with that mental stuff, is it more you're just helping people as people just reach out to you, or is there other things you're c- you know, other organizations you're connected with or anything like that? Or, or what, how... If people are struggling through things, what, I mean, what do you... Is there some, what, what, uh, can you, what inc- or what advice could you give them or, yeah
Tim BrownY- yeah. So I, I just kinda help talk them through and ask them questions. And with me being, um, a Christian, I just tell them to go talk to their pastor or
TycePasture, yeah.
Tim Brownand, and start out there. And maybe some, I mean, you might need counseling, that if you have
TyceSure
Tim Brownto, to pay for that, absolutely. You know, go do that. But the, the number one person that, that will talk to you is, is your pastor or
TyceYeah.
Tim Browna lot of places in small towns, you don't have to be from whatever religion they're o-
TyceSure. Yeah, yeah
Tim Brownif you co- if you go out to Utah, d- you know, all of, of the churches that Ben goes to, I've been welcome in with open arms, no
TyceYep.
Tim BrownAnd I, and I, you know.
TyceYeah, there'll be a space here, well, yeah
Tim Brownsame with the Catholics around here. It, it doesn't matter. You, there's somebody to talk to if you want to.
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownto believe in religion or anything, but they're not gonna not talk to you. They're
TyceYeah, sure.
Tim Brownyou out, you know?
TyceYeah
Tim BrownAnd, and that's where, you know, and I just, I like to sit alone and, and, and talk to God too. So it's
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownto my certain spots that I go to and I just, just talk
TyceA one-on-one time. Yeah. Yeah
Tim Brownto my dogs. I talk to my dogs a lot. Probably, questionable sometimes if people come knock on my door and I'm sitting here talking to my dog like it's a conversation. "I thought somebody else was in here with you." but yeah, it just, yeah. You just gotta work through it, man. It's just,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownit. This side's better than, than the alternative of not being here, for
TyceHave a good b-- yeah, one of my best friends I hunt with a lot, he's, uh, he's going through a divorce and really struggling, you know, mentally. Just feels like everything's against him and, and it's hard, man. I'm just like, it's, you know, you get in that spin of not being positive and I don't know, it's just like, dude, you know, just try to... You know, you got-- I'm, I'm like, "You gotta be grateful. Go out and serve some people." I'm like, "When you get outside and go help someone, it just naturally, like, makes your life better." You know? I'm like, "Go, go walk down your street. If you see your neighbor's lawn's grown, you know, grown up, go frigging mow his lawn or just don't sit there and sulk and..." Not, not sulk, but that does-- it's just hard when you're by yourself, right, sometimes and,
Tim BrownDon't
Tycelike I say, go to church. Yeah, that, yeah, I don't know. But
Tim Brownget in that mental rut and it just, you just sit there and you constantly think of the negative. Like, you just go- if you go outside, it, it helps. Like, just even just going outside. You don't even have to do anything, but just go outside and just sit and listen and breathe it all in, and it, it helps immensely. S- meditation helps a
Tycefor sure. Well, the beautiful thing about a dog, you gotta go walk your... You gotta go get... Your dog may force you to get outside. You're like, "Oh, let's go get some energy out." So they can be
Tim Brownknow,
Tycelife-saving in that way.
Tim Brownyeah, and Ben and I talk about it a lot. Like, you, you put in what you get... Or you get out what you put in.
TyceSure
Tim Brownwe don't go and do, you know, the giveaways and stuff like that for any recognition or anything. It's like,
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Browngonna help people, I
TyceIt feels good.
Tim Brownfor certain things. And it's
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownknow, it feels good, and, and God's gonna reward you that way, right? So it's like
Tyceja.
Tim Brownget a reward in, in, or at least be at peace that you are doing something positive in the world. just too much negative, man
TyceHow's Ben stay so positive all the time?
Tim BrownHis wife, she's an absolute saint
TyceHe's, uh, he's such a good guy. I mean, I've, I've helped him train his dog. He's just, like, so positive and, like, just up. I'm like, "Dude, you-" I never have, no
Tim BrownOh my gosh. His dad's unbelievably positive, his mom's crazy positive, his brothers are
TyceJust in the genetics or something, huh?
Tim BrownJust, they are just extremely happy
TyceYeah,
Tim Brownbut they don't look for much. You know what I
Tyceyeah
Tim BrownJust regular people
TyceYeah. No, he's a...
Tim Brownthat wanna help people.
TyceMm-hmm. No, 100...
Tim Browndude
TyceYeah, he's a great guy. Yeah, if you guys are...
Tim Brownall the time about
TyceYeah.
Tim BrownI said, "She's really the one. She's
TyceI'm
Tim Brownone that's the saint. You're, you're not anything compared to her."
TyceI'm trying to think if I've even actually met his wife, to be honest. I mean, we've-- 'Cause usually he's dropping dogs off for training, picking them up, and I'm trying to think if I've... I'm sure I have, like when I board their dogs sometimes and-- But, um, he-- I don't know
Tim BrownShe's usually the one that's wrangling the, the munchkins.
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownthat's in charge of the girls
TyceWe, uh, back in the day, I mean, years ago, I've been training now for about 20 years for a living, but he, um, we, we actually worked at a car dealership. I don't know if he told you that. But y- yeah, we worked at a car dealership together, and I sold cars, and he was, uh, he did the detailing on the vehicles, and they'd come in, and that's how we actually first met, um, before he kinda got into all the dog stuff. And, and, uh, so it's kinda funny when, you know, we knew through that, and we're kinda friends working there at that company, and then, then he's into dogs, and I, you know, and then it just kinda came back around. And so, yeah, so he's a good, he's a good guy. But yeah, we're talking about Ben Proctor, folks, BPro Kennels. If you're looking for a phenomenal kennel, um, check him out. Tim, obviously, ha- you have his, his-- you run his dog kennels or, yeah, yeah. Any
Tim Brownhole, and it is, it's, it's bulletproof almost. It, it is,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownit's a race car. I mean, it really is. You, you, if that comes out of your, your box of your pickup, your dogs are gonna be fine. It's got a full-on roll cage in it.
TyceYeah, yeah
Tim Brownthey're extremely safe in that dog kennel. I
TyceFunny s-
Tim Browna helicopter on it.
Tycefunny story. He's like, some guys had, uh... He built this custom crate for these guys, and it was kind of a weird shape. It was kinda rolled out, and it was on the side, and it had just two holes, and the guys were just throwing like, like hounds. He was just throwing a bunch of dogs in 'em. And he, he's like, he calls me and he's like, "Tice, do you, like, do you want this crate?" I'm like, "Well, it doesn't really fit my trucks." "Me, me neither." And the guys had brought it back and had him make a different one that kind of... And he tried to talk him into originally like, "Hey, this, I don't know if this is what you want,"
Tim BrownJa
Tycebut he built it. It's like two, it's two holes, but it's just giant space. And, uh, and he's... I'm like, "Dude, you can just put it in front of my barn and people drop dogs off, and we can just throw 'em in, throw it in there, you know, or whatever." So I go over to his, his work to, like, get off, and he, like, lifts it off the trailer, like one end. It's, it's built really well. And he drops it from, like, three feet or something. I'm like, "Whoa!" Like, thinking it is like, "Oh, this thing's bulletproof," and it didn't do anything to it, you know. So yeah, they're, they're good, they're awesome,
Tim BrownYeah,
Tycecrates, so.
Tim Browntoo. I mean, it, my dogs, it- the only time that I'm ever worried about my dogs in those is in the summer when it's hot.
TyceYeah. Yeah.
Tim Browna s- confined space with a dog that's panting. You know how it is. It's
TyceYeah.
Tim BrownSo
TyceYeah
Tim Brownknow, the fans come in, come in handy and, and that. But he's got the, the sensor,
TyceDo you run that sensor in, Nirish? Yeah.
Tim Brownyep,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownholes'll have it in there. And it, it gives you a peace of mind anyway, right?
TyceLet you know what's going on.
Tim BrownDakota, it's kinda cold up there too, so it's like, "Okay, let me just check it." 'Cause I don't run straw or hay or anything in
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownjust too much of a mess.
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownhave, I usually have them a blanket that they, one of their... They have blankets all over and a dog bed, and,
TyceLet's throw that in there
Tim Brownwhat they have. And I just throw that in there, and then I have extra ones that, like, if it's wet out, I pull them out and let them dry off and put
TyceSure.
Tim Brownin. But,
TyceYeah, makes sense
Tim BrownAnd the, the temperature fluctuation is not anything that's crazy on it. Like, they're, they're at 55 degrees in there or 60 degrees in the winter when it's cold out. It's like, they're fine. They're perfectly fine
TyceOh, yeah. No, they're... That's a small... Yeah, and so you're coming back, you're coming out here for, um, Beyond the Point, uh, that giveaway, right, that we talked about off- Yeah. Do you wanna, do you wanna talk about that where people can come out and meet you and all that stuff?
Tim BrownSo we're doing, uh, if, if every- anybody knew about it, it was, uh, the Beyond the Point giveaway. It was with myself, Mygra, Franky, uh, Chief Upland, Gunner Kennels, um, Williams Knife Company, Yeti, Turtlebox, uh, OnX. It's just cra- there were just a whole bunch. Uh, Deck Systems, that was the other one. uh, we're doing a, we did a giveaway, so everybody that, the three winners that won,
TyceHow did they get, how did they put in for that? Was it just...
Tim BrownIt
TyceHow did they...
Tim Brownup. It was a
TyceOkay
Tim Brownwe had a Q- like at Pheasant Fest, we had a QR code that you could scan, and then you went right to Migra's website, put your information in, and you were on the list. So everybody, those three guys won a Franky Instinct, LX Overunder shotgun, a
TyceDang
Tim Brownfor their truck, a Gunner, Gunner kennel, a year membership to OnX, bunch of Yeti stuff, uh, a Turtlebox, um, knife, knives from Williams Knife Company, Retriever Fuel for their dog, a case of Migra ammunition. So, like, you're talking 15
Tycelot, yeah.
Tim BrownPlus, oh, by the way, plus you get to
TyceOr taking out a hunt.
Tim Brownin some of the most amazing places that you could ever imagine.
TyceYeah
Tim Brownso we're doing the first one's in Utah, and then the second one's in Wyoming for sage grouse, and then the third one's in South Dakota for pheasants and, uh, which the guy wants to... The guy that won that one wants to hunt grouse, and I was extremely happy with that
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownI can shoot them, I can shoot all the pheasants I want here. I don't want to shoot any pheasants while I'm
TyceYeah. Do something different.
Tim Brownprairie chickens.
TyceYeah. Yeah
Tim Brownfavorite thing. That's my favorite bird to hunt is prairie chickens, and it's not even, it's not even remotely close.
TyceHmm.
Tim Brownum, we decided to do this, and we're gonna film it and make a little YouTube series out of it, and, uh, show all of the other stuff that, you know, beyond the point, that's
TyceYeah
Tim Brownus sitting around talking, the stuff with just the camaraderie and, and, and all of that. And we're bringing friends that, that we know that are in the industry can come hunt on these hunts with us, too. So
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownit's just gonna... We're just building that community, right? And to
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownthat. And it's gonna... Every one of these are, it's all on public ground. So it, every one of these places we're going, everybody can enjoy it, right?
TyceJa, ja.
Tim Brownwhen people say, "Well, I don't have a spot to go," y- you do if you want to put the time and effort into
TyceSure.
Tim Brownit, right?
TyceIs it a two or three? How l- how many days is it you're taking the person out?
Tim Browntwo-day
TyceTwo-day hunt.
Tim Browna
TyceYeah
Tim Brownhunt. Um, and that, you know, like, I was... The one that I was worried about more than anything was Utah
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownyou know, we're hunting mountains and I didn't want, like, some 84-year-old dude from Georgia to win.
TyceYeah, yeah, sure.
Tim BrownWe would pivot and make, make things work,
TyceSure
Tim Brownlike, I'm like, "Oh, that's not my only worry." And then I saw the guy that won it was 79, and I'm like, "Oh, crap."
TyceFor Utah?
Tim Brownlooked... Then that, yeah. And then I looked at his Instagram and he's in Washington State and he's climbing mountains, and I'm like, "I'm gonna be the one that's dragging ass instead of him," you know? So I'm like, "Well, he's fine." And then the other two guys were younger guys that, that were... I mean, they're really jacked about it. So all in all, it went really well, so I'm pretty pleased with it. It's gonna be a lot of fun.
TyceSo before and after that, are you doing something? Yeah, tell us. Yeah
Tim BrownYeah, so when we come out to Utah on the 16th of September, uh, we're gonna be at the, uh, Spanish Fork Gun Range,
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownum, or Gun Club or whatever you wanna call
TyceYeah
Tim BrownAnd, uh, I'm gonna put some stuff out about this too on social media and whatnot. it's gonna be a sporting clays. So the first 40 people that sign up, if you go to my website, thebeardeduplandercompany.com, there's a, a thing that you can click get in on the f- so if you're one of the first 40 people to get in on it, you get a free round of sporting clays um, the ammo for the round.
TyceNice
Tim Brownwe're gonna have a little competition. Um, the guys that are coming up from Migra and myself and Ben are gonna go early and do our round first, then this is what you guys gotta beat. You know, just
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownit fun, right?
TyceSure
Tim Browngonna be a food truck there. Uh, it's gonna be just... And then the five stand will still be open, so if you're not the first 40 people, you can still come and all you gotta do, I believe, is pay for your clay pigeons. You know, bring your own ammunition, pay for your clay pigeons,
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownthe place is... We have the whole place rented out. So,
TyceOh, fun
Tim Brownwe did it, we did it over the 4th of July when we were there and had about 40 people come and it was just a of our pants kinda thing. We're like, "We'll see if anybody's got any interest," and
TyceNice.
Tim Brownit was really good, so we're like, "Let's up it a little
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownwe're gonna be out there anyway, so
TyceSure
Tim Brownlet's have fun and do it a little bit bigger." So, um,
Tyceyour hunts or after your two hunt? After the two-day hunt. What's the date on it?
Tim BrownUh, the 16th of September.
TyceWhat day? Is that a Saturday or what is...
Tim BrownNo, it's a Wednesday.
TyceOkay
Tim BrownWednesday. Wednesday night from 6:00 to 10:00, I think we have the place.
TyceI have to make sure I put that in my, put that in my schedule to try to come out too. That'd be cool
Tim Brownon the 12th we're gonna be at the Scheels in, uh, Salt... What, what is that? the Scheels at out there?
TyceShills in Sandy. Sandy, I believe.
Tim Brownthat's
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownyep, yep.
TyceYeah
Tim Brownyou, if anybody's, uh, around on that Saturday, come, come by the Scheels store, and I do
TyceW- what are you doing there?
Tim BrownI'm there with Mike and Frankie.
TyceOh, okay
Tim Brownwe're just doing a, a meet and greet thing, kind of thing, and just helping them,
TyceDo you know where that is? Uh, in the, in Chill's by like the shotgun, the, the gun area?
Tim Browngun, gun area. Yep,
TyceOh, okay
Tim BrownSo yeah, so if anybody's bored on that, that Fri- what is it? Saturday. I think it's the 12th, whatever that
TyceSo is your hunt Monday, Tuesday then, and then you'll have that event Wednesday-- or Saturday and Wednesday
Tim BrownYeah, 'cause it's, uh, t-t-t-t-t-t, let me look here. It's, yeah, the 12th is on a Saturday. We'll be at Scheels all day, and then our hunt is the 13th and 14th. Yep.
TyceAnd the 16th at, you said 6:00 PM?
Tim Brownis there, yep, 6:00 PM at, uh, the Spanish Fork, um, Gun Club. And then after that we turn and burn and we go to Wyoming that next week 'cause it opens, sage grouse opens on the 19th.
TyceSo are you going, are you on these, are these going back to back pretty much or?
Tim BrownThese two are.
TyceOh, okay
Tim Brownand then, and then my buddies from Migra, um, Mark and, and, uh, Q-Tip go up to Canada 'cause they're, I mean, they're waterfowl guys.
TyceJa,
Tim Brownthey're
Tyceja
Tim Brownwaterfowl guys. So they'll go up there uh, hunt up there, and then, um, they're gonna come back down and meet me in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the South Dakota hunt,
TyceOh, cool. Cool
Tim Browntwo-day event at Shields that, that, uh, weekend. So
TyceSo Migra, we were talking about what are you shooting, what do you like to shoot? Uh, kind of where we're talking about Migra, what do you like to shoot that they use for upland?
Tim BrownSo for, uh, if, if you can shoot the lead, um, early season pheasants and grouse I'll shoot the 6.8
TyceOkay.
Tim Brownthat they have. And, uh, if you have to shoot steel, the 4.6s are just as good. 4.6 steel is, it, it works really well for
TyceThat's awesome. Hmm
Tim Brownthen, uh, later in the season when the birds get really tough, for like the sage grouse, I'm gonna use the 4.6s, uh, the 4.6 stack loads
TyceIt's a little bigger BB.
Tim BrownNeed a little bit bigger BB, uh, just it's got a little more knockdown to it
TyceIs it lead or is it something else?
Tim Brownit's
TyceOh, it's all lead. Okay
Tim BrownYeah, the, the bismuth tungsten market is, is so screwed that there's no, there's no bismuth or tungsten available.
TyceMm.
Tim Brownso it's, it's, it's steel or, uh, if they do have bismuth, it's leftover from last year.
TyceIs bus- business coming out of China or where's that coming out? Does it come out of-- Where is it? Yeah.
Tim Browncontrol pretty much all of it.
TyceHmm.
Tim BrownYep,
TyceYeah, I think I'd heard that, but I didn't know the details of, of that.
Tim Brownyou know, there's, there's other things that everybody's working on to, to get, um, out there, like some copper stuff and stuff like that, which is, is gonna probably be the new wave of the future. It's probably how it's gonna go.
TyceHmm.
Tim Brownyour TSS stuff is, if they don't have it already, their, you know, turkey loads next year it's gonna be different
TyceJust with the birds of prey and the, all that stuff going on. Is that why, is that where you- the copper
Tim Brownget it. They just can't... Yeah, the copper, it's gotta be non-tox,
TyceYeah, non-toxic. Yeah.
Tim Browna waterfowl production area in, in pretty much any state you have to
TyceShoot copper. Yeah. Yeah.
Tim Browncopper. And, and if it's
TyceOr steel
Tim Brownknow, like, like Boss had to get it approved to, to make sure it worked right. And,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownyeah, it just, there's so many loop- or so many hoops and, you know, everything you gotta go through to get stuff approved anymore with Congress that
TyceYeah.
Tim BrownBut I mean,
Tyceand all that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Tim Brownit also isn't near, you know, when they had the lead ban, because they were shooting pounds of ammunition into the water, not,
TyceSure.
Tim Browna few shotgun shells. They were shooting, like legitimately a punt gun had like three quarters of a pound of lead ammo in it. Like,
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownyou shoot into a few flocks of ducks with that, you're probably gonna
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownon the bottom of the water
TyceYeah. Yeah, it's an interesting... That's a whole nother thing to ta- Well, and shotgun shells have gone up in price a lot, even lead have do- I mean, everything else. Everything's doubled, right? Pretty much so.
Tim BrownYeah.
TyceBut
Tim Brownuh, I had a, a box of Fiocchi Golden Pheasant that I bought, I don't even know when it was. It had to be early 2000, 2008, 2009, something like that. I had just the box,
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownit was, like, 6.99 for the box,
TyceWow
Tim Brown20- now they're, like, 27.99
TyceNo, I, I know.
Tim Brownjust...
TyceYou gotta pick, I guess you gotta pick your shots better now.
Tim BrownMm, yeah. That's no kidding. That's no kidding. But even, you know, even like the Migra, it's 22-ish dollars a box or 17.99 if you can find it some places. So
TyceYeah, that's not bad. Yeah
Tim Brownout of the, the realm of what everything needs to be.
TyceCall me cheap. I, when I start pushing 25 plus 30, I'm like, "Ooh, it's starting to get up." 20-ish is, uh, I can chew that a little easier
Tim BrownYep. Yeah, and like the
TyceThat's just me personally, but
Tim BrownI 100% agree. Like I had a hard time spending $35 for, uh, five rounds of, of turkey ammo. Like, and then I got to thinking, I'm like, "Okay, I'm gonna shoot one to pattern it." I can shoot four more turkeys.
TyceYeah, yeah, yeah.
Tim Brownneed to...
TyceYou're just not banging away usually. Yeah
Tim BrownYeah, and then when I take kids out, we just shoot the, the lead migrate. I
TyceKnocks him down.
Tim Browninto, I'm getting those turkeys into like 10 yards for
TyceOh, yeah.
Tim Brownyou could throw a rock and probably kill the damn thing.
TyceYeah, yeah, you could, you could shoot him with low brass probably.
Tim Brownyeah, and, and, you know, that's the, the boys and, and girls that I take out shoot with the, the pheasant loads. They don't kick near as bad as what a turkey load does, so you don't have to worry
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownAnd then they put them down just as easy as, as the, the turkey ammo does.
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownthem be in my lap, you know what
TyceYeah, for sure.
Tim Brownright in my lap, and that means that I really fooled them.
TyceYeah
Tim Browna decoy or whatnot, I, I still fooled that bird to get that close.
TyceYeah. Are you a 20 gauge guy, a 12 gauge guy? What, what are you, what are you? 20 gauge? Oh, I'm a 20 gauge, yeah. Oh, once you start shooting 20 gauges, it's hard to go back. I mean, I'll shoot a 12 for waterfowl, but yeah
Tim Browndon't, uh, you know, it, it all boiled down... I had a, a Beretta 686 Onyx, um, over/under for the longest time. I had it for probably 20 years about. And, uh, I made the huge mistake of we were on the edge, we were on a, in a driveway that was right on a highway, I set my gun up on top of the co- the dog
TyceNo, man.
Tim BrownAnd I was worried about my dogs, get my dogs loaded up, and we st- my buddies and I started talking. Didn't even
TyceDrove off
Tim Brownhead. off, it fell off, and somebody picked it up, 'cause it was probably in the middle of the highway.
TyceOh, man.
Tim Brownup and nobody turned it in. It's gone. And it's like,
TyceOh, d-
Tim BrownThe sto- the stories that that, the stories that that gun could tell, and I'm li- I just, just pains me to know. You know, I take a lot of crap for it, and not deservingly I should, because that is a terrible mistake. But it's like, damn,
TyceMaybe at some point, if you keep telling that story, maybe someone will be like, "Dude, I picked up that guy's gun. Turn it in."
Tim Brownn- no kidding. Yeah. Yeah, if you're in northwest Iowa and you picked up a Beretta, that was mine. If
TyceThat was it. Yeah, that was
Tim BrownIf you turn it back in to me, I'll make it worth your while, let's just say that.
TyceTim's. Oh, seeing you start all your podcasts with that.
Tim BrownYeah, right? the, you know, and then, uh, and then I was So I went out and bought a SBE-3 because, you know, that's a pretty good turkey hunting gun, 20 gauge.
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim BrownI'm like, "It'll work if I need a backup gun for pheasants and, and upland stuff." So I was like, "I'll just get one of those." And then Francke come on board and they're like, "Well, why don't you shoot one of these?" And I'm like, "All right, I guess I'll get one of those."
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownit'll be an Instinct, um, side plate that I'll be shooting all this season.
TyceOkay, cool.
Tim BrownYeah. But the weight is the key for me. That was why I went to a 20 gauge
TyceYeah
Tim Brownweight. I want it to be as light as possible
TyceHmm. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Tim BrownBut
TyceWhen we're training, when we're training too with dogs and shooting, you know, you shoot them with a 12... I mean, you can change your pattern, but if they c- you know, these pen-raised birds, if you shoot them close, 12 gauges blow them up, you know? And the 20s just don't, you don't get that
Tim BrownYeah,
Tyceout of them, you know?
Tim Brownand you don't wanna use a .28 'cause that's even more expensive
TyceYeah, then the 28
Tim Browngauge is, .20 gauge will
Tycegauge.
Tim Brown.20
TyceYeah. Yeah, when, when they actually have the... I think I'd switch mostly when they have the shortage of ammo, and you couldn't-- You'd go in there and you couldn't get 12 gauge. I was like, "Well, there's freaking 20, 20 gauge here. I'm gonna pick that up," you know? So I picked up a 20 gauge and started shooting that. I'm like, "Dude, this is the way to go," you know? 'Cause I grew up with always shooting a 12 gauge, and we'd just have to wait for the birds to get out there further and, and so once I started shooting the 20, I just got hooked on it, so
Tim BrownYeah, I started with a, uh, 1100 12-gauge, with the Remington 1100 12-gauge with a fixed choke, modified choke, and that thing is a tank. I mean, it weighs so m- I bet it's like... I bet it's 12, 15 pounds, right?
TyceWow.
Tim Brownabsolute tank of a gun, and I'm like, "I don't want to carry this thing anymore."
TyceYeah
Tim Brownbought that, that's when I bought that Beretta, and I had it... got it for a steal at Scheels, and I just have just never stopped using that gun. It was such a good gun.
TyceHmm. I've been shooting the little CZ, the, the, um, Sportsman's Warehouse has a little CZ that I sh- I mean, I'm laying, I'm, like, putting the guns on the ground as I'm training dogs. I'm like, "I just need a little workhorse," you know? And, uh, I just had some Stoegers forever just 'cause they were cheap, like Condor. I think they're the Condor. And I s- they
Tim BrownYep
Tycea pretty warranty, but it, I, I think I sent that gun in, like, every two years, and they just kept sending me a new gun 'cause the, the firing pins would go out. So I tried the CE, uh, is it the Bob, the Bob White's the... We have the side-by-side I think is the Bob White, and then I can't remember, is it the Woodcock that's the... I can't remember the
Tim Brownor the, the,
TyceTrying to remember now what...
Tim Brownis another one too. I don't, I don't
TyceYeah, the Drake I think is the 12 gauge, I bel- I believe.
Tim BrownYeah. My brother's
TyceIs that the upper end, the higher end CZ?
Tim BrownYeah, CZ Ultra. Not really. I mean, it was only like 800 bucks.
TyceOkay, yeah.
Tim BrownAnd
TyceYeah
Tim Browngot that because he wanted the light gun too, and I, I was like, 'cause Jake from Chief Upland, that's his, that's what he shoots.
TyceCZ, yeah.
Tim Brownyeah, just
Tycebeen g- they have great guns, honestly.
Tim Browngun.
TyceYeah. Yeah
Tim Brownthan light too, so it, it works out really well.
TyceWell, that's what I tell people. If you're just trying to get a, a gun that's not gonna break the bank, you go to that. That's You can only get them at Sportsman's or I can't remember, I think it's the, the Bob White and the Woodcock, I believe. But man, for like 700, 700 bucks or six, sometimes you can get them for like 600 bucks on sale. We've put thousands of rounds through it, and we've had like one finally wear out. But it's I mean, I mean, the average hunter, that thing's gonna last a long, a long time. But
Tim BrownYeah, you
TyceI don't know
Tim Brownto go get a $2,300 gun or whatever.
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownto. If you're,
TyceSure.
Tim Brownif i- it, it's the, it's the first world problems kind of stuff, you
TyceYeah. Yeah.
Tim Browninto that range of it, you know? Now, if I'm, if I'm duck hunting and I'm, and I'm hunting in some nasty, nasty stuff, I warrant getting a better quality
TyceYeah.
Tim Brownnot, right? but if I'm just, if I'm just out hunting pheasants and I can run a, I can run a, uh
TyceCan run a eight sev-- I mean anything, right?
Tim BrownHe was just sneezing his head off. I had to see what he was doing. Um, if I can run, you know, any gun, it'll, it'll work fine. If I can run a swab down through it and clean it out,
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Brownthat.
TyceYeah. Well, like I say, when you get up in those, it's been, and, and it's fun though when you get into upland, right? It's, it's, I think, I mean, dog guys are gear guys, right? Like, we like our gear, you know? It's like, and hunters in general are pr- most of us are gear guys, you know? You want the latest this and that, and it's, it's just the f- I mean, you work hard, so you might as well spend it on what you want. And I mean, you get the beautiful engraved shotguns and the ultralight. It's just the cool... I don't know. It's, it is fun to have fun gear, but you don't have to be rich to hunt upland game and have as just as good a time, right? So, you know
Tim BrownYeah, and you know, I went to the, uh, the Delta Waterfowl Show in, in Des Moines, Iowa couple weeks ago. I was down- I went down there and hung out with the guys at Migra, and I thought that the upland guys were, were snobby with their gear. We ain't even close. waterfowl dudes are crazy with their gear. Yeah, they, they like, they like to spend the money. Them decoys and them
TyceOh yeah
Tim Brownthe d- we were right across the aisle from the, uh, um, Sitka,
TyceSitka, Sitka Waterfowl or yeah, Sitka. Mm-hmm.
Tim Brownthey had the rain booth,
TyceMm-hmm
Tim Brownthey had a really, really high, resolution camera, you- a really s- good slow motion camera or whatever, and you could get in there, and it was raining on you, and you'd put on the waders, and you'd
TyceSure.
Tim Brownthe full outfit. And then you'd go in there, and they'd take pictures and video and all this,
TyceOh, cool
Tim Brownyoung kids were just having a fricking ball with it. And it was like, wow, that's, that's, that's some intensity there. But if you think about it, you know, the waders are 1,500 bucks and the, you know, the jacket's another $600. And it's like, geez.
TyceYeah. I, I, you know,
Tim Browncrazy
TyceI do have their-- I, as a plug, I do have their waders. I am on-- I am, uh, have, you know, a connection with them. But man, they're, they are the most comfortable wader I have personally been in. I mean, when, like you say, when you're upland hunting or you, you want... It does, it is nice to have good boots if you spend a lot of time on the ground or the gear can make it a little more enjoyable if you have comfortable gear that works, you know. So
Tim BrownYep. But, I mean, but if you're bow hunting, it's just, it's either scent control or, warm camo. You know what
Tyceyeah
Tim Brownthat's, that's the, the two things. And your bow, I mean, your bow's expensive, but it's not like there's a whole bunch of other things. Like upland guys and, and waterfall guys, our dogs are... You know, that's a whole nother thing. You know
TyceYeah.
Tim BrownLike,
TyceMm-hmm
Tim Brownputting Garmin, we're putting Garmin collars on them, and those aren't cheap. And then, you know,
TyceIf you get them professionally trained too, you don't have to, but if you do, yeah, like that adds up and... But
Tim BrownAnd
TyceI mean, really any sport can get expensive
Tim BrownYeah, and that's the thing too, like if you don't have the time to train it and you want to send it to a trainer, you, that's your option, right?
TyceSure, yeah. Yep.
Tim BrownIf you want to enjoy it, you
TyceMm-hmm.
Tim Browna little bit of direction.
TyceFor sure.
Tim BrownBut
Tycedays we're so... Our time is so busy, and that's partly why we're, why we're in business, right? Is people get, they go to work, and then they get home, and then all of a sudden they got family, and they have kids' sports, and they have this. And, but they, when they go hunting, you want a nice dog, right? So it's like, well, you pay us, you do your job, we'll do our job, and then you go hunting in the fall and have a wonderful dog, and you can really just have a good, enjoyable experience, you know? So yeah.
Tim Brownexactly right
TyceWell, we better, we probably better kinda start wrapping it up here. Tell us, tell us where people can find you, how they can get involved with you, and all that good stuff, so.
Tim BrownYeah, just, uh, on all my socials, YouTube included, uh, it's just The Bearded Uplander. You can search that and it's going to come up. The website's thebeardeduplandercompany.com, but if you literally put me in Google it's gonna come up on, you know, everything. So it's... Um, and then the Beyond the Point show is on all podcast platforms, YouTube. that's its own, like, separate page and all that on, on YouTube. So, uh, all the episodes will be there. Um, I do have a Patreon where the Patreon people will get everything first, and then all of the stuff that we can't really s- share on regular social media will be on there.
TyceOkay.
Tim Browncleaning of the birds and, and my buddies and I cutting up. There's some stuff on... I mean, language, you know, type
TyceHmm.
Tim Brownthat I can't post, but is absolutely hilarious and I'd love everybody to see it. But there's a lot of, there's a lot of, uh, some F-bombs dropped in it and whatnot, so it's, it's not, it's not suitable for
Tycebantering.
Tim Brownway, right? And,
Tycetell people where they can find that, uh, become a Patreon for you. Just patreon.com?
Tim Brownslash... Yep, Patreon/uh The Bearded Uplander. It'll come up.
TyceOK
Tim Brownyep, you can just go to the Patreon and, and then search it. There's two different tiers. Uh, there'll be some discount codes and stuff with the bigger tier, from some partners and stuff like that. So, and
TyceCool
Tim Brownit's j- and then there'll be cooking stuff and, and I'm gonna do a lot of habitat, what you're looking for when you're hunting certain species. You know, all that stuff that I can give tips and tricks that
TyceWell, you were talking about doing a pheasant count, right? And you post it on there or something too
Tim BrownY- yep, the pheasant count will be out for, for Northwest Iowa it'll be out this week on the
TyceCool. Cool.
Tim BrownUm, yeah,
TyceWhen will
Tim Brownwas a little mad at, Travis was a little mad at me that I didn't come on the Flush podcast last week and, and say it. And I'm like, of want to keep it for them guys first at least."
TyceYeah. You have something special there. Yeah. Do,

TyceSo, well, thanks Tim, for coming on the show, man. Really, really appreciate you. You guys give The Bearded Upland Hunter a follow on Instagram, every- everywhere he's at. Um, he's a great guy. I think he had a bunch of good stuff going on, uh, helping other dudes out with their mental, with mental health and stuff. That's huge. Doesn't get talked about a lot with men 'cause we, we all think we're pretty bulletproof, right? So, or we like, at least we like to act that way.
