0:44
Hey you guys and welcome to another Ask
0:46
Zack
0:47
so today I wanted to talk about one of
0:50
the most popular overdrive pedals and
0:52
the guy that made it popular
0:55
so the pedal is the nobles OD r1 and the
1:00
guy that made it popular is Tom
1:02
Bukovac so I'd never heard of it the OD r1
1:06
before until I was working for Brad
1:10
Paisley we had just recorded the rhythm
1:14
tracks for the mud on the tires album
1:17
and a studio called the castle which was
1:20
a stone building built by Al Capone's
1:24
guys as a place for him to stop off
1:26
between Chicago and Miami so there's
1:29
also some other stopping off points and
1:32
so this stone building looks like a
1:33
castle and it was a place for him to
1:35
party and rest before they got back on
1:38
the road and went you know to Miami and
1:41
back so that's where we did the the
1:44
rhythm tracks and then of course that
1:49
studio because it's bigger is more
1:51
expensive so then we went to a smaller
1:53
studio to do overdubs because of course
1:55
you don't have as many musicians you're
1:57
kind of doing like one guy at a time so
2:00
that way we could do lots of guitar
2:02
overdubs with Brad so because that's
2:04
what he'd like to do so
2:08
the studio was called Thelma's and that
2:12
was owned by one person and then the
2:14
house that was attached to it was owned
2:16
by another guy named Tom  Bukovac so
2:19
I'm at Tom of course through that and
2:23
Tom started talking about this green
2:27
pedal and he called it the secret weapon
2:30
so there it is there's an original green
2:37
Nobel's
2:39
OD r1 so I asked Tom I said well where
2:45
do I get one and he said we'll go to
2:47
guitar heaven so I went to guitar heaven
2:49
which is a story that's not round
2:50
anymore
2:51
here in Nashville but at the time they
2:54
were the first one to have like a lot of
2:55
pedals they had a great guy named Corey
2:57
Daniels that would pull out a bunch of
3:00
pedals and plug them all in and say play
3:03
through all of them and see which one
3:04
you like the best which was brilliant on
3:07
his part because you were comparing
3:08
stuff and most the time when you're
3:10
comparing five or six pedals or whatever
3:12
you'd end up saying that you liked one
3:14
and he'd buy it most of the time so I
3:16
tried out the nobles I liked it and I
3:19
said you know yeah I want to take it it
3:22
was fifty dollars still have the box too
3:26
and so he was taking the pedal and he's
3:30
putting back in the glass case I said
3:33
wait I want to buy and he said oh I'm
3:34
gonna get you one from the back we've
3:35
got a bunch of them this is just the
3:37
demo one and some something in me said
3:40
you want that one so I said no no Cory I
3:43
want that one and so he said well okay
3:46
but I mean it's the demo one I said I
3:48
don't care I want it so I bought it and
3:51
of course later on I found out that
3:53
Nobles are pretty inconsistent they all
3:55
sound like uh Nobles but they hold you
3:57
know it's kind of all in the same family
3:59
but they're all different so I got it
4:04
and enjoyed it and you know
4:06
you used it quite a bit then you know
4:10
things started kind of moving along for
4:13
for Tom and I really felt like well to
4:20
back up just a little bit I had started
4:23
writing for vintage guitar magazine and
4:25
I had my ass Zach column and I was
4:28
really enjoying doing that and and I
4:31
hear I saw this guy Tom and he was very
4:33
different because he was playing Gibson
4:35
guitars a lot he was using this Nobel's
4:37
Cody r1 he was you know he had his own
4:40
thing
4:42
he was not and he was nothing like brick
4:45
mason or Reggie young or all these other
4:47
cats he was his own guy he was the first
4:49
you know kind of session guy with kind
4:51
of a rock swagger and he was more of a
4:54
rock player so I pitched the idea of
4:58
doing my first interview with with a
5:01
vintage guitar with you know with Tom
5:02
and they agreed and so in the September
5:07
2005 issue of vintage guitar magazine
5:10
with Brian Setzer and my good buddy red
5:14
Volk art up here this has the interview
5:18
with Tom  Bukovac so I was thrilled to
5:25
get to sit down with him and you know we
5:28
had a good time and this is the article
5:31
in all of its glory again my first
5:34
interview ever
5:35
Tom Bukovac  I took the photos also
5:38
because there was no budget for a
5:40
photographer so there it is and I'm
5:44
proud of it proud that it Tom was my
5:47
first interview so thank you Tom I had
5:52
friends mention the interview and say
5:55
that they ended up picking up Nobles
5:58
because of that
6:01
some of the other famous users Guthrie
6:04
trap Jed Hughes and others a lot of the
6:06
guys and they learned about it from Tom
6:08
Tom was evangelizing the nobles ODR one
6:11
he was telling me he was telling
6:14
everyone he met
6:15
in fact I found out from a reliable
6:18
source that during his tenure on the
6:20
road with Wynonna Judd in the 90s that
6:23
he he would even sell them from the
6:26
stage that he would buy cartons of him
6:28
and when guitar players would come up to
6:30
him asking about what he you know what
6:32
gear he was using he said what you need
6:34
to get is this and he would sell him the
6:36
one that he had and so he would you know
6:38
go through you know cartons of nobles
6:41
and selling them all over the US so you
6:46
got to give credit where credit is due
6:48
Tom Bukovac made this pedal what it is
6:52
and you know there's lighter versions
6:54
like this silver one I picked this up as
6:58
a backup and it's it sounds similar they
7:01
don't that that's the thing I mean
7:03
people talk about oh the old one old
7:05
green wouldn't sound the best that's
7:07
like well they all sound different you
7:09
could get ten of the old green ones an
7:11
exact tone actually did this they got a
7:13
bunch of the old green ones and plugged
7:14
them all in they all sounded different
7:16
they all sounded within the nobles
7:19
family but there's so much variance
7:21
between one of the other and they they
7:24
would change the construction techniques
7:26
you could take two old green ones and
7:27
open it up and even as someone that's
7:29
not not technical you could look and go
7:31
wow the circuit boards look very
7:33
different they have different colored
7:34
wires on them the components are in
7:36
different places so so that's kind of
7:41
the story about the the nobles you know
7:44
it has a neat sound so this is my Daniel
7:48
Castro blackguard with Ron Ellis pickups
7:51
on the bridge pickup deluxe reverb with
7:54
a vintage thirty in it this is dry
7:58
[Music]
8:29
really a really sweet sounding overdrive
8:34
pedal it sounded very different than
8:36
anything else it was on the market at
8:38
the time it wasn't didn't sound like a
8:40
tube screamer or a full drived and or a
8:43
full or a rat or blues driver from boss
8:49
had a unique sound had this neat low-end
8:52
thing and I don't think it sounds I know
8:55
a lot of people think it sounds really
8:56
natural I don't know if it sounds
8:59
natural but it sounds like a really good
9:01
it sounds like a noble's channel on your
9:03
amp sounds like you just added a no
9:05
panda and I think it's a great channel
9:07
and that's why so many people have made
9:08
copies of it I mean if you were to list
9:11
the number of ODR one copies I mean
9:13
you'd be 12 deep in no time but it just
9:18
has a really nice fatness and but
9:22
doesn't have as much of the mid-range
9:24
thing like the tube screamer goes
9:26
[Music]
9:33
[Applause]
9:38
[Music]
9:43
[Applause]
9:48
[Music]
9:52
Jorgensen didn't use that but anywho
9:54
that's a that's a freebie so so you've
10:00
got to give credit to Tom Bukovac  he
10:03
popularized this pedal he evangelized it
10:05
he went all over the world preaching the
10:09
gospel of the nobles OD r1 he still uses
10:12
the pedal to this day there's a Premier
10:14
Guitar Rig run down and still using them
10:17
so god bless him so hope you've enjoyed
10:22
today's episode talking about the nobles
10:27
and Tom Bukovac and kind of a trip down
10:30
memory lane for me so I hope you will
10:34
subscribe I hope you will share this and
10:36
let's keep this show going I'll talk to
10:40
you later bye bye
