oh hello friends and welcome to another
0:20
Ask Zac this is our April viewer
0:25
mailbag episode where I answer your
0:27
questions so first off I want to say a
0:32
big thanks to Keith Williams with five
0:35
watt world Keith has not only been a dear
0:40
friend to me especially in the last
0:41
couple months of you know of less
0:44
contact with people and have enjoyed
0:46
phone conversations with him we've been
0:50
able to kind of influence each other and
0:52
he's kind of mentored me going from
0:55
doing like the interviews with the true
0:57
tone lounge to doing kind of my own page
0:59
and in Keith's jazz master episode he
1:03
gave me a big you know big kind of shout
1:05
out a big plug so I want to thank Keith
1:09
just for that and for his friendship and
1:13
his help because I've learned a lot from
1:15
him and he has a great page and most of
1:18
you probably already aware of him but if
1:20
you're not go check it out any of his
1:24
episodes are great he tends to have
1:25
episodes that are short histories or
1:28
these more philosophical ones about how
1:33
many guitars is enough and you know what
1:35
do I need and things like that and I
1:37
enjoy you know both both types of
1:40
episodes but you need to go and check
1:42
him out so back to answering questions
1:46
actually one more correction and this is
1:50
in the the nickel the pure nickel
1:52
strings episode I kind of got
1:55
extemporaneous and and started talking
1:58
about Battle Creek Michigan and then
2:01
maybe that ghs was making fender strings
2:03
at some point no that's not true there
2:06
were actually two factories in in Battle
2:10
Creek and one was GHS and the
2:13
one was VC Squier and I knew about VC
2:17
Squier and so I wish that I would have
2:19
double-checked that first but anyway but
2:21
Here I am correcting that so VC Squier
2:24
supplied Fender with string starting in
2:26
the 50s and then they were bought by
2:30
Fender in the 60s and then they were
2:35
final and they made all of fender
2:37
strings up until 1981 and that's when
2:40
the factory in Battle Creek was
2:41
shuttered in 1981 then of course they
2:45
owned the Squire name and again note the
2:48
spelling squ
2:50
I E R which is not of course the spelling
2:53
if you were having a knight and a squire
2:55
and but because they owned that already
2:58
that's why they used that for the squire
3:00
line so that way they didn't have to buy
3:02
another trademark so they had Squire all
3:05
right on to the questions so this is by
3:11
Aaron booth and he asked on the maple
3:15
cap Telecaster episode he said what made
3:17
you choose steel saddles versus brass
3:20
well of course that 67 tele originally
3:23
had steel saddles it had the threaded
3:25
ones on it and I really liked the sound
3:27
of it and I tried brass on there and the
3:30
brass really darkened it and kind of
3:32
took away the liveliness and so I ended
3:36
up I wanted compensated saddles and so I
3:39
ended up going with C&J tooling saddles
3:41
which unfortunately are not made anymore
3:43
because the the owner of the company
3:45
passed away but there are all parts tons
3:49
of companies make you know steel and
3:52
brass compensated saddles the one thing
3:55
I would say if you are going for that
3:58
old steel saddle sound try to find a
4:02
lighter set of steel because that was
4:04
kind of my battle when I was working on
4:08
my 67 tele was going from those original
4:10
threaded saddles and they were
4:12
lightweight they weighed next to nothing
4:14
and then a lot of the replacements were
4:15
very heavy steel and they changed the
4:18
tone of the guitar and I didn't like the
4:21
change
4:22
and so it took me a while to find some
4:24
really light steel and the cmj tooling
4:26
did that yeah
4:29
brass tends to be darker and more
4:32
compressed and less lively sounding and
4:34
it just depends on the guitar so I will
4:38
use brass or steel sometimes I'll throw
4:40
on a set of brass
4:42
you know onto a guitar and see if I like
4:44
it or not
4:45
I think Leo kind of got it right in the
4:47
beginning with you know using the brass
4:51
saddles with the flat pole bridge and I
4:54
think you know the staggered pole with
4:57
the steel saddles is a really good
4:58
combination but you can mix and match
5:00
into whatever you want alright any this
5:05
is from Michael flowers and it says any
5:08
guidance on acquiring an inexpensive
5:10
tele Fender or not that gets that spanky
5:13
tone well I really like as far as I mean
5:18
one you just got to go and play a bunch
5:22
of guitars the best thing you can do is
5:26
find a place it has a bunch of guitars
5:27
and and play a bunch of them you know
5:31
you could find a good you know
5:33
inexpensive you know Indonesian squire
5:36
that that has a good sound to it as far
5:40
as just a kind of general purpose you
5:43
know not overly expensive guitar that i
5:46
found that has a good traditional kind
5:48
of vintage Telecaster type sound or this
5:51
Spanky
5:52
as Michael refers to I would say the old
5:56
Road worn series that they just stopped
5:59
it recently but those road warns that
6:02
were made in Mexico the the kind of
6:04
blackguard or white guard version they
6:06
started those in 2009 and they just
6:08
stopped production on them last year
6:10
there's tons of them out there some of
6:11
them are kind of climbing in price but a
6:14
lot of them you can still find in 600
6:15
range and those are great guitars the
6:18
most you'd need to do to those is maybe
6:19
change the pickups out maybe change the
6:22
pots but they're they're great guitars
6:27
here's another one this is by Cass Zach
6:32
can I ask an unrelated question Keith
6:35
Williams from five watt world tells me
6:38
you're the one to ask why do strats
6:40
until he's have slightly different neck
6:42
pockets from what I can gather of Leo
6:44
that's not what I would have expected
6:46
well that's a great question you're
6:48
talking about the the heel of the neck
6:50
how on a Telecaster or Esquire or
6:53
whatever it's squared off and then on
6:55
most other Fender instruments it's it's
6:58
curved so I'm still in the process of
7:01
doing research on this but I talked to
7:04
nacho who of course wrote the blackguard
7:06
book and he's one of the foremost
7:08
experts on early fender stuff he said
7:13
that he felt like Bill Carson had an
7:16
influence on that in that you know
7:18
making the room going from the
7:20
Telecaster to the strat that there was a
7:22
lot of push by him to make things have
7:25
more curve to it such as the contoured
7:27
body the more contoured headstock the
7:31
tummy cut the forearm cut the double
7:35
cutaway not saying that Bill Carson did
7:37
that but there was a lot of his
7:38
influence and again it's like somebody
7:41
saying hey mom I'd like a chocolate cake
7:43
well Bill Carson didn't you know didn't
7:45
create those things leo fender and
7:47
Freddie Tavares are sorry I'm
7:50
pronouncing his name wrong and those
7:53
guys are the ones that actually you know
7:55
did the handiwork and made it but Bill
7:58
Carson was definitely influential as far
8:01
as a taste tester and you know somebody
8:04
asking you know for four features on
8:07
guitars so I'm still trying to find out
8:10
more information on that but that's what
8:12
the answer is at this point this is from
8:16
Tim do Bravo and he says that he wants a
8:20
be vendor tele but doesn't want to drop
8:21
three grand or more on lon
8:25
yeah you do not have to you know spend
8:29
three grand on a Telecaster by any means
8:31
as I mentioned before you know those
8:35
rode Warren Telly's are great you know
8:37
you can find those used and then it cost
8:39
about $500 to have Abbey
8:41
put on there are a ton of guys I'm gonna
8:46
have to say my favorite is the Glaser
8:48
type and Joe Glaser has just you know
8:52
kind of retooled his bender and made it
8:55
where he can install it even you know in
8:58
less time than ever before he can do it
9:00
in like three or four days and I don't
9:01
think anyone else has that short of a
9:03
install time so you know of course
9:06
there's guys doing Parsons white vendors
9:09
and other types of you know vendors but
9:11
I would recommend Joe Glaser yeah so I
9:14
think if you got a road warren and had a
9:15
bender put on it you'd probably have you
9:17
know $1500 or less in the guitar next
9:23
people you know some guys will van Han
9:27
Solo my friend and who I can have
9:30
publicly congratulate and congratulate
9:32
here because he's been if you're not
9:37
familiar with Tom Tukovac Tom Bukovac
9:39
of course is a famous Nashville session
9:41
guitar player and he has his own YouTube
9:43
channel now and he's been posting stuff
9:45
every day and if you haven't seen it you
9:48
need to check it out anyway he had a
9:50
contest and will van Hong Solo made it
9:54
to round two so let's hope that he he
9:57
wins at all but will ask to hear the
10:00
Daniel Castro guitar which I have right
10:02
here into the Harvard and also had the
10:06
people wanted to hear the Harvard versus
10:10
the deluxe reverb alright so now to do
10:18
this so I have an a/b switch so I can
10:22
switch between seamlessly between the
10:25
deluxe and the Harvard I will have to
10:28
add that I had to put in a isolation
10:31
transformer on one of the amps to keep
10:34
it from from buzzing because whenever
10:36
you connect two amplifiers to each other
10:38
they just tend to start making noise and
10:41
I like to have a pretty low noise floor
10:43
you know so I have a Mario at access
10:48
electronics made me this really nice box
10:51
many years ago when I was working for
10:53
Brad Paisley and
10:55
a single input and then it has two
10:57
isolation transformers for two the
10:59
outputs and then it has a straight out
11:02
and so that can I did that because I
11:05
needed that when recording multiple amps
11:07
at the same time with with Brad Paisley
11:09
so I'm using just a good ol ad box and
11:14
yeah and so I'm gonna go switch between
11:17
the two and I'm just gonna let I'm gonna
11:21
start with the harvard and every time i
11:24
click which you'll be able to hear this
11:26
foot switch you know click you'll hear
11:28
as i go back and forth and you'll know
11:31
when it's the deluxe because i chose to
11:34
leave the the reverb on because that's
11:36
part of the amp sound so yeah so the dry
11:40
sound is the harvard and the sound with
11:42
with the touch of a verb is the is the
11:45
deluxe and and again just so you know
11:47
i'm starting with the harvard and every
11:49
time i click I'm switching to the other
11:51
amp and here we go i'm course got my
11:54
handy dandy danocastor and yeah
11:59
medium pick using their rounded in
12:02
starting on the neck pickup here's the
12:05
harvard let's see
12:08
[Music]
12:36
[Applause]
12:38
[Music]
13:00
[Music]
13:11
[Music]
13:19
of course that ended on the on the
13:22
deluxe reverb go to the back pickup
13:25
[Music]
14:26
so there you have you know kind of the
14:30
the difference between the the deluxe
14:32
and the and the Harvard I think you can
14:36
hear that obviously the mid-range is
14:38
very different on the two you know the
14:42
the tweed has a little more you know
14:43
kind of compression again I'm not using
14:45
any effects at all you know you have a
14:48
five tube amp with a ten inch speaker
14:52
and you have a nine tube amp you know
14:54
what the 12-inch speaker in a bigger cab
14:55
so I mean part of the difference you're
14:57
hearing is speakers and cabs but you
14:59
know this has a very very simple circuit
15:01
and this has a more complex circuit and
15:04
this tends to have a little less
15:05
mid-range this has more mid-range
15:07
they're both great sounds again the
15:10
deluxe is a little bit you know is my
15:12
favorite but the Harvard is a close
15:14
second and they're my my favorite guitar
15:18
amps so there was one other question and
15:24
it was oh also the Harvard compared to a
15:30
tweed deluxe so I don't you know of
15:34
course right now is not a great time to
15:36
try to borrow an amp from a friend but a
15:39
friend of mine had a 59 tweed deluxe and
15:43
we did a head-to-head between the
15:45
Harvard and the tweed deluxe and the
15:48
Harvard had more clean Headroom now but
15:53
the deluxe got louder but it got
15:54
distorted faster also the deluxe had
15:58
more compression to it and it was a
16:00
little softer sounding a little squishy
16:02
ER and the the Harvard had firmer lows
16:05
to it so in the end I prefer a Harvard
16:09
over a tweed deluxe but you know it
16:12
depends on what kind of guitar you play
16:13
and what kind of style you're into and
16:14
things like that all right well that's
16:18
it you know for today I hope you enjoyed
16:21
the little the Harvard and deluxe reverb
16:24
shootout answered some questions keep
16:27
the questions coming also note that I am
16:30
be watching out because I am getting my
16:33
website ask Zack dot-com I am
16:37
in the process of revamping that and
16:39
will hopefully be launching this soon so
16:42
thanks a lot hope you have gone down in
16:45
the corner and subscribed I hope you'll
16:47
comment and I'll see you next time
16:49
Thanks bye bye
