well hello friends and welcome to
0:41
another Ask Zac today we're going to
0:42
take a look at brown fender amps and
0:44
specifically
0:46
what i call the fire breathing brownie
0:49
this is the Chris Stapleton 62 brown
0:52
Princeton
0:53
which i think is just a
0:56
killer killer amazing little amp uh to
1:00
the point that
1:01
i asked Fender to to send me one you
1:03
know I'm not really a review guy
1:06
but uh every once in a while something
1:07
you know gets the best of me and i
1:09
really i love brown Princeton's and uh
1:13
had kind of been looking for one and
1:14
then fender came out with this and i
1:16
thought
1:17
well
1:18
let me check one out so now i i don't
1:20
want to give it back so it's uh
1:22
really really great so we're going to
1:24
talk about talk about the the Stapleton
1:28
Princeton a little bit about the you
1:30
know the the lineage of the Princeton up
1:32
to the the brown version uh what makes
1:35
the brown amp sound different than other
1:37
fenders
1:39
and
1:40
yeah and just have a little fun and of
1:42
course hear hear what it sounds like so
1:44
while you're thinking about it if you've
1:45
been enjoying the show
1:47
please hit subscribe if you enjoyed the
1:49
video please hit the thumbs up
1:52
also i really appreciate people
1:53
supporting the channel uh there's
1:55
multiple ways there's tip jar
1:57
information in the description there's
1:59
merch like this uh you know Ask Zac amp
2:02
schematic t-shirt and there's friends of
2:04
Ask Zac a way to support the channel on
2:06
a monthly basis so really appreciate
2:08
that so let's dive in so
2:12
my first exposure to uh
2:15
brown amps was i had a
2:18
62 brown deluxe
2:20
and i got that when i was in high school
2:23
and
2:24
it was a cool amp but i could not get
2:26
along with it because the brown deluxe
2:28
is kind of different from the rest of
2:30
the brown amps in that it is very
2:32
percussive and woody sounding and
2:34
guys specifically get them
2:37
because they want that kind of a mini
2:40
Marshall plexi sound
2:42
so because of my experience with that
2:45
with that brown deluxe i kind of rode
2:47
off brown fenders so all through the 90s
2:50
and 2000s whenever I'd see a brown amp i
2:52
was just like no no thank you no thank
2:54
you no thank you
2:56
so that was up until uh my good friend
2:58
Austin who I've talked about on the show
2:59
before uh he started getting all sorts
3:02
of brown fender amps now you got a brown
3:05
deluxe and i was like who cares but then
3:06
you got a a brown Princeton that i
3:08
played through and a brown super and a
3:10
brown pro
3:12
and all these amps i was just floored by
3:15
them because
3:16
they were kind of like the blackface
3:18
amps except the high end was kind of
3:20
pulled back and it had more mid-range
3:23
and now in hindsight i can say okay
3:25
that's what I've been trying to do to my
3:28
blackface deluxe reverb i clipped the
3:30
bright cap and put a celestion vintage
3:32
30 in there why because I'm trying to
3:34
tame the high end and give it more mids
3:37
so
3:39
the brown amps kind of have that in
3:41
spades
3:43
they they they do that quite well they
3:45
have kind of a raw
3:47
uh mid-range kind of mid-range ford kind
3:49
of sound but they're still close to me
3:51
they're closer related to the blackface
3:53
amps than the than the tweeds
3:56
so uh
3:57
yeah they have a and they're
3:59
super uh yeah they really cut through
4:01
the mix well again because they have you
4:04
know a nice uh
4:05
forward mid-range
4:07
so just to cover a little bit of the
4:09
lineage of the of the Princeton and how
4:11
it kind of changed in the lineup was
4:14
originally it was the step up from the
4:16
champ which of course the champ was the
4:18
bottom of the line you know student
4:20
model that had a single output tube was
4:22
five watts had a volume control and a
4:24
single input that was it
4:26
the Princeton the tweed Princeton was a
4:28
step up from that they added a tone
4:30
control and had a bigger cabinet
4:33
but it was still basically the same you
4:35
know five six watt amp
4:37
uh then the amp above that starting in
4:41
the mid 50s was the Harvard and that was
4:43
the lowest amp in the lineup that had
4:45
two output tubes so they could put out
4:47
more like 10 watts
4:50
and that was kind of the way it was
4:53
until
4:55
the brown tolex amps came out and all of
4:58
a sudden the Harvard disappeared except
5:00
for a few stragglers that are actually a
5:02
mix of prince tweed Princeton and tweed
5:04
Harvard parts and so you have these
5:06
Harvard's that just have a single output
5:08
tube and they're
5:09
quite rare but the the Harvard was
5:11
pretty much eliminated
5:13
except for those stragglers
5:15
and the Princeton took its place with
5:17
two output tubes and they added tremolo
5:20
so it's kind of like a tweet vibralux
5:22
really
5:23
but uh
5:25
yeah and these amps
5:27
are wonderful
5:28
they they just have a wonderful sound
5:30
and
5:31
Dave hunter who uh who's written many
5:34
guitar books and writes for vintage
5:35
guitar magazine and
5:37
men in guitar player and on and on he
5:39
wrote a full article on the brown
5:42
Princeton and in it he says the only
5:45
thing that holds these these amps back
5:48
from being great
5:49
club and stage amps is the speaker
5:53
and he even says get a new baffle for it
5:55
and put a 12 in it
5:58
and boy howdy that makes all the
6:00
difference in the world
6:02
once you play through one of these you
6:03
know whether it's an old one or the
6:05
Stapleton you know with a 12 inch
6:07
speaker in it it's
6:08
it's a whole new animal i mean it just
6:11
really
6:12
the amp has so much more power and
6:14
authority and volume you know it's just
6:17
able to uh you know to play with a
6:19
drummer and able to be so much fuller
6:21
sounding
6:22
so yeah then then you know of course you
6:24
go from this to the blackface amps which
6:27
kind of
6:28
go down in volume and of course they add
6:30
verb um
6:32
but
6:33
these amps kind of have a following
6:35
besides Stapleton's also like jimmy
6:37
Vavino has been a big fan of these and a
6:39
lot of guys really love these amps and
6:42
uh
6:43
they're great so let's just let's just
6:45
hear it some so I'm going to play a
6:47
little bit of uh
6:49
let's hear that tremolo and the tremolo
6:51
is the bias variety so instead of being
6:53
like the the little opto
6:55
you know cell that's like in the
6:57
blackface amps it's actually changing
7:00
the bias of the power tubes to create
7:02
tremolo and what you get is just a much
7:04
more
7:05
uh
7:06
sophisticated uh
7:08
you know nicer sending tremolo
7:18
[Music]
7:30
and of course I've only got the
7:31
intensity on like four you know about
7:33
three and a half three and a half so if
7:35
you turn the intensity all the way up
7:36
you get crazy
7:51
[Music]
7:53
[Laughter]
7:57
and you can get really fast
8:01
[Music]
8:17
[Music]
8:18
[Laughter]
8:20
really
8:22
beautiful tremolo on it
8:24
uh you know I've got the volume at four
8:26
and the tone right up in in the middle
8:28
uh you know of course you turn these
8:30
things up they're uh like i said they're
8:32
kind of fire breathing dragons you can
8:34
get a really great so
8:35
I've got it up to about eight and a half
8:37
here
8:42
[Music]
8:58
[Music]
9:08
what's not to like about that
9:10
we're gonna get it back to four now uh
9:13
tone control is great you know you can
9:14
uh you know
9:17
so
9:20
[Music]
9:28
[Music]
9:30
i think it's kind of best at the at the
9:32
five position and i don't really miss
9:34
having separate treble or bass controls
9:36
and it's it's kind of one of these
9:38
things where five is what you would call
9:39
kind of more flat as far as the eq and
9:42
you get darker as you go down to one and
9:44
you get brighter of course as you go up
9:46
to ten so five is a really
9:48
nice position on this
9:50
again they they just did a really
9:52
stellar job on this it's got a
9:55
a signature uh
9:57
you know speaker in it from imminence
9:59
and it is
10:01
hey it's like you know the speaker
10:03
itself is pretty much it's 10 pounds
10:06
and the efficiency on it is uh is very
10:09
high where most speakers are have an
10:11
efficiency rating somewhere in between
10:13
95 and 99 this has one of 101.
10:17
so again it's taking the power from the
10:19
from the amp itself and it's really
10:21
using it in a more efficient
10:23
uh you know cleaner way so that you get
10:26
more volume out of the amp
10:28
yeah nice big ceramic magnet speaker i
10:31
think they they did an amazing job
10:34
uh i did with not this amp but with
10:36
another brown Princeton i did experiment
10:38
with some different speakers at one
10:40
point and uh if you're wanting to push
10:42
it more like less less mid-range you can
10:45
put like a wgs g12
10:48
cs that's the smooth cone
10:51
their ceramic speaker that will kind of
10:52
uh
10:53
pull back the mids a little bit i think
10:55
you have to take into account that Chris
10:57
plays a jazz master and uh
11:01
and therefore
11:02
you know that's kind of a wide sound but
11:04
not a lot of mid-range so i think you
11:06
know this you know the speaker even adds
11:08
some mid-range to it so i like it but if
11:10
it's too much mids for you you know you
11:12
can always you know do a speaker swap
11:14
which is a really quick and easy way to
11:17
you know kind of dial in an amp to uh to
11:19
what you
11:20
want it to be like
11:23
yeah
11:24
really cool solid pine
11:26
comes with a foot switch comes with this
11:29
uh
11:30
this filson cover
11:32
this is the nicest cover I've I've ever
11:34
seen come with an amp
11:36
and uh
11:38
and kudos to to Chris and defender
11:40
because you know no offense but a lot of
11:43
amp covers are kind of glorified shower
11:45
curtain material and for them to put a
11:47
really high quality
11:50
amp cover is really a nice touch so
11:53
kudos to them because many times with
11:55
with my amps i end up buying new covers
11:58
i get you know padded covers that will
12:01
actually protect the amp when i put it
12:03
in the back of my car or in a van or
12:04
something like that so
12:06
you know mega kudos to Chris for uh
12:10
making them put a nice cover with the
12:12
amp
12:13
and the amp is you know it's it's hand
12:15
wired um it's got you know it's got a
12:18
reproduction of the old blue Mallory
12:20
caps
12:21
uh
12:22
you know it's uh it's it's 21.99 which
12:26
you know
12:27
is
12:28
you know
12:29
pretty pretty fair price for a hand
12:31
wired fender amp with a
12:33
solid pine you know cabinet a signature
12:36
model speaker and a beautiful cover and
12:38
it's imminently uh you know giggable and
12:42
wonderful sounding you know probably the
12:43
only thing i would add to it is uh
12:46
you know you know you could add a delay
12:48
puddle or a reverb pedal to it just to
12:51
finish it out some so here's here's what
12:53
it sounds like with a little bit of verb
12:55
on it
13:02
[Music]
13:11
and then this is what it sounds like
13:12
with a little bit of slapback delay on
13:13
it
13:24
[Music]
13:27
you can tell it takes pedals fine you
13:29
know even drive pedals or whatever you
13:31
throw at it and just has a nice fat
13:33
sound and uh
13:35
you know yeah it's it's a match made in
13:37
heaven with a with the telecaster so uh
13:40
mega kudos to uh to fender for uh making
13:43
this this really really cool amp the
13:46
fire breathing brownie
13:48
all right guys well i hope you've
13:49
enjoyed today's episode today's look at
13:52
the uh
13:53
the brown Princeton the Chris Stapleton
13:56
signature model amp uh
13:59
yeah hope you will go check it out it's
14:02
a it's a great one
14:03
see ya bye
