well hello friends and welcome to the
0:17
most uh
0:18
uh different
0:19
out there episode of Ask Zac yet
0:23
that's so far
0:25
so this episode is going to cover
0:28
my obsession pre-guitar
0:30
which is Legos
0:32
and then how there was this long dormant
0:35
period in my life up until a couple of
0:36
years ago
0:38
and getting kind of back into Legos
0:42
and then
0:43
of course this recent set that Lego and
0:47
fender did together and i just have to
0:48
say this is
0:50
an amazing set uh the attention to
0:53
detail is
0:54
off the charts
0:56
so that's what today's episode is about
0:58
it's about obsessions colliding
1:01
a little about my history
1:03
with Legos
1:05
and just this wonderful set so that's
1:08
today's Ask Zac

1:38
also there's merch like this it's a
1:40
sickness shirt which is very
1:43
uh appropriate for today's episode so
1:47
all right enough about all that let's
1:49
dive in
1:51
let's start with Legos so i started
1:54
playing with Legos i was born in 73.
1:58
so i don't think I've ever said that
1:59
specifically in the show but yes i was
2:02
born in 1973
2:05
and
2:06
not you know probably around 77 or 78
2:10
i started playing with Legos and i know
2:12
it was at least that early because i
2:14
have sets
2:15
that came with the early minifigures
2:20
and these minifigures they have they
2:22
don't have movable arms and legs
2:25
and so uh yeah so this are these are the
2:28
the figures that you got with Lego sets
2:31
up until uh 1978 so in that i think 75
2:34
to 78 or so you got these kind of
2:36
figures
2:38
all right well i got very into them and
2:41
pretty much every Christmas i always got
2:43
a set and uh
2:46
this was
2:47
one of my favorites so this is the uh
2:51
the infamous this is the second Lego
2:52
spaceship i also have the one that
2:55
before this that's smaller but this is
2:57
probably one of the most famous Lego
2:59
spaceships i think this was released
3:00
around 1980 or 81.
3:04
and then uh one of the last big sets
3:06
that i got
3:07
was this uh you know Lego castle set and
3:12
uh
3:13
this this was a really neat set it was
3:15
the first time they'd ever done you know
3:17
castle or
3:19
any type of set like that
3:21
so then you know i start getting older
3:24
and
3:26
i kind of phase out of Legos and i phase
3:29
into the guitar so i become very
3:31
obsessed with the guitar
3:32
and the Legos go away luckily
3:36
i had this
3:37
handy-dandy
3:39
Lego denim bag that
3:42
still has the
3:44
lego
3:45
tag on there that my cousin gave me and
3:47
so the legos were stored in a bag like
3:50
in this bag and then also a box
3:53
for many years and they were up in my
3:54
parents attic well
3:57
you know back in number you know in 2007
4:00
i got married to my wife amy
4:02
and then a couple years after that we
4:04
started having children
4:05
and then also my parents started saying
4:07
you need to get this crap out of the
4:09
attic
4:10
which i think we've all probably heard
4:11
that at some point
4:13
and so i i got all my legos and other
4:16
toys that i had you know kept
4:18
and got them
4:20
and then started kind of putting them
4:21
back together because these weren't you
4:23
know these sets weren't left together
4:25
they were all just in complete you know
4:28
individual pieces
4:30
so i still had the instructions and the
4:32
instructions that i didn't have i found
4:34
that you could find online and so i put
4:36
back together this spaceship and the
4:39
castle
4:40
and uh yeah and really kind of started
4:42
enjoying it and then when my kids were
4:44
old enough
4:45
to to really enjoy them well i just
4:48
gave them the legos except for these
4:51
because i didn't want them to mess with
4:52
these so yes i have a little bit of that
4:54
lord business thing right you know i
4:57
don't let them touch certain things but
4:58
they have thousands and thousands and
5:00
thousands of legos that they play with
5:02
in fact in our house we have a whole big
5:05
table in our living area that's just
5:07
called the lego table and it's frankly
5:09
called the lego room
5:12
so we you know very often
5:14
get and give lego sets for uh you know
5:17
birthdays and christmas and such
5:20
so uh but i really you know besides kind
5:23
of putting these together i really
5:24
didn't get like back into it as it were
5:27
because it was just you know kind of
5:29
busy and i didn't get any new sets or
5:31
anything like that
5:32
and then
5:33
you know in in 2017 my dad passed away
5:37
and
5:38
for all those that have lost your father
5:40
i'm i'm i'm sorry my condolences
5:44
and my mother
5:46
the christmas following my my father's
5:49
passing
5:50
she gave me a lego set for christmas and
5:53
so i hadn't gotten a lego set
5:56
uh
5:57
since i was probably 11 or 12 years old
5:59
so it was uh
6:01
it was a lot more fun than i thought it
6:03
was going to be and it was a really
6:05
really neat set and i have it here and
6:07
it's this is kind of a big boy
6:09
set um
6:14
so it was this
6:17
lego uh
6:19
you know snow speeder because that
6:20
that's a that's probably my third
6:22
obsession is star wars
6:24
and so this is a a snow speeder set part
6:27
of their uh you know kind of collector
6:29
series and uh
6:31
yeah so i got this and from then on
6:34
every christmas my mother my dear mother
6:37
would give me a lego set and it was very
6:39
nice because it was kind of it was kind
6:40
of healing in a way because
6:43
that was something that my parents gave
6:45
me for christmas and birthdays
6:47
you know all through my childhood so it
6:49
was kind of a a really nice thing to get
6:52
a lego set
6:54
even at the the grand age of a 48 to to
6:58
get a lego set from your from your dear
7:00
mother
7:01
so
7:04
i'm gonna
7:05
set that down
7:09
so then this last christmas
7:11
i had heard that lego and fender had
7:14
come out with this set so i kind of
7:15
hinted that i wanted it and lo and
7:17
behold for christmas my uh
7:20
my dear mother gave me
7:22
this set and i i was you know i was
7:25
somewhat excited to get it but then
7:28
when i started diving into it and seeing
7:30
the attention to detail that they did on
7:32
this it just blew my mind so
7:36
i just want to give if i wore a hat i
7:37
would take it off i would give a hats
7:39
off to lego and defender
7:42
for putting an amazing
7:44
level of detail to this
7:47
you know build and uh
7:49
wow
7:50
it's just ridiculous like so i don't
7:52
care if you're into legos or not if
7:54
you're into the guitar
7:56
i would kind of you know contemplate
7:58
getting the set and i just checked that
8:00
the set is still available i know
8:02
sometimes i get in trouble for
8:03
recommending
8:04
books and things like that that are out
8:06
of print or have you know kind of become
8:10
you know uh you know yeah out of print
8:12
and where they become really expensive
8:13
so this set is still available i think
8:15
it's around a hundred dollars
8:17
and uh yeah i think it's just a
8:20
ridiculously cool set
8:22
let's let's go into some of the the
8:23
details of course you've got a a cable
8:26
connecting the uh the amp to the guitar
8:29
and everything
8:30
the uh the strings as you were putting
8:33
them on they had uh colored ball ends
8:35
like
8:36
fender strings and also diaderio which i
8:38
think the ontario
8:40
makes fender strings at least they used
8:42
to
8:43
and of course you know you have strings
8:45
going across it you have a tremolo bar
8:47
you have the uh you know volume and two
8:49
tone controls you have the selector
8:51
switch you have three pickups you have
8:53
the pick guard also this can be made
8:55
either red or black and of course i
8:57
chose black because black guitar sound
8:59
better and that's scientifically proven
9:02
i think jim lill has in fact done a
9:04
video uh you know proving beyond a
9:06
shadow of a doubt that black guitar
9:08
sound better that's just a little dig at
9:10
jim because he's a friend of mine
9:12
uh yeah he's he's jim's been to my house
9:15
before so yeah we are friends uh yeah it
9:18
has tuners on it you can tell it's a
9:20
maple neck with a rosewood fretboard
9:22
it's got the black the back plate on it
9:25
uh it's got a a fender strap like you
9:28
would have gotten
9:29
oh in the uh
9:31
70s and 80s you know i remember getting
9:33
these kinds of of straps
9:35
with the fender guitars it's got a
9:36
really cool stand for it
9:39
and now we're going to dig into the part
9:41
that is that is my favorite and that's
9:43
the amp and i wouldn't have thought that
9:45
this would be my favorite by any means
9:47
but it this is ridiculously cool
9:50
so
9:51
here
9:53
is the tremolo and vibrato uh i mean the
9:56
tremolo and reverb foot switch which
9:59
just looks you know amazing and of
10:01
course there you have it next to a real
10:03
one on this
10:04
vibrachamp reverb
10:06
and
10:07
let's see i'm going to disconnect that
10:11
and
10:12
let's just dive in you've got actual
10:14
uh you have a baffle board that goes on
10:17
you've got a jewel lamp you've got the
10:19
knobs you've got inputs you've got the
10:21
chassis straps you've got a strap
10:25
yeah you've got the the princeton reverb
10:27
little name plate here
10:28
the top comes off and you can see where
10:31
they they made it look like
10:34
a uh an old time you know circuit
10:37
you know like a real you know
10:39
point-to-point wired uh i guess you'd
10:41
call it a turret board
10:43
and uh yeah the top just kind of comes
10:45
off very easily
10:47
uh the back
10:50
uh you know this this whole back panel
10:52
comes off just like on a fender amp well
10:54
of course this yeah it does come off in
10:57
in multiple pieces so you have like the
10:58
back panel the bottom panel which you
11:01
take that off and then you can see the
11:03
reverb tank
11:04
so it has a reverb tank down in here
11:07
and it's got the send and return cables
11:10
and then it's got you've got a speaker
11:12
here and it's got the two terminals on
11:14
it
11:15
then i'm going to take off this top
11:16
panel
11:18
and this is where we start getting even
11:20
deeper
11:22
there are the connections to the to the
11:24
speaker
11:26
and then you have tubes you have the
11:28
preamp tubes the right number of them
11:30
and then you have two power tubes and a
11:32
rectifier and the rectifier they even
11:34
had it where it's colored red in them in
11:36
the middle
11:37
and you know because that's always the
11:38
tube that kind of shines brightest
11:42
all i can say is wow wow wow this was
11:47
such a fun build and just
11:50
yeah just ridiculously fun and this
11:52
looks you know great
11:54
you on your shelf or on your desk or
11:56
what have you
11:58
i was just blown away
11:59
by this so mega kudos also the amp even
12:03
has a serial number back here you can
12:05
see that
12:06
yeah
12:08
so
12:09
so impressed with fender and lego on
12:11
doing this so
12:13
i highly recommend also you know i'll
12:16
just i'll just say i love one of the
12:17
things i love about legos it's another
12:19
you know stress relief for me you know
12:21
the guitar is a big stress really for me
12:23
playing the guitar
12:24
and this is a different kind of stress
12:25
relief i mean it's really nice
12:27
to just sit down
12:30
and uh and and put a set together
12:33
it's you know supe super relaxing super
12:36
enjoyable
12:37
uh so i highly recommend this set and
12:39
i'll put a amazon affiliate you know
12:41
link down in the uh in the description
12:43
and just so you know again this this set
12:45
was not given to me uh by fender or lego
12:48
again my mom bought this for me
12:50
so uh here's my uh parting words and
12:54
that's that lego please do a a 50s
12:57
telecaster you know maybe like this one
12:59
maybe you could have either white or
13:01
black
13:02
pickguard for it
13:04
and then as far as the amp to go with it
13:07
i think you need to do a tweed so
13:10
you know so this is my uh
13:12
59 harvard so this would be a good
13:14
candidate or probably even better one
13:16
would be like a 410 basement where you
13:17
could have four speakers in the back and
13:20
and multiple inputs and stuff i think
13:22
that would be really cool oh one thing i
13:25
almost forgot they also included these
13:27
little colored wedges like picks that
13:30
you're supposed to throw into the back
13:32
of the amp and have on top of the amp so
13:33
there's multiple colors kind of like
13:35
dunlop picks
13:36
so
13:38
again
13:39
ridiculously cool so
13:42
hope uh you know if you're remotely a
13:44
lego fan highly recommend that you get
13:47
this set especially before they they
13:49
stop making it and lego if you're out
13:50
there please make another set with a
13:52
telecaster and a tweed fender
13:55
all right guys well i hope you've
13:56
enjoyed this very different uh ask zach
13:59
episode and i'll see you next time bye
