0:00

on today's ask Zack we're going to look

0:02

at one of the coolest beat up old 52

0:06

Tellies an honest Road

0:10

[Music]

0:17

War Hello friends and welcome to ask

0:20

Zack today I have the great honor of uh

0:24

of having one of the coolest beat up

0:27

heavily tanned 52 Tellies I've ever had

0:30

the pleasure of getting to uh hold and

0:34

play and uh this 52 Telly is owned by

0:38

Andy talamantes great blues guitarist

0:41

and guitar repair man living here in

0:44

Nashville and today we're going to tell

0:47

the story of this guitar and how it got

0:50

to look in this beautiful beat up way

0:55

before we dive in I just have to say

0:58

thank you to my patreon members who are

1:01

the engine that keep this show going I'm

1:03

grateful for them and uh yeah if you

1:07

want to find out more there's a link in

1:10

the

1:11

description also there's you know tip

1:13

jar information you can do super thanks

1:16

uh there's ask Zack merch I just

1:18

appreciate you uh supporting the show

1:20

because that is what keeps this show

1:22

going and I appreciate it all right so

1:27

first off uh one of the the great things

1:31

that I've enjoyed about doing this show

1:33

is just the amount of people that I've

1:36

been able to connect with uh all over

1:39

the world but you know even just here in

1:43

Nashville that I've been able to connect

1:44

with that I wouldn't have otherwise and

1:46

that have these really cool instruments

1:48

and stories to tell and I love telling

1:51

stories so when Andy talamantes reached

1:56

out to me and said that he had uh a to

2:00

Telly that he wanted to show me and that

2:02

he uh his first wife had been uh been

2:07

Jimmy Bryant's one of Jimmy Bryant's

2:09

daughter and he had some Jimmy Bryant

2:11

stories I said yeah let's let's meet for

2:13

lunch and so we met at this little place

2:16

called Maniacs in Franklin Tennessee

2:18

which is one of those you know kind of

2:21

uh you know less processed um you know

2:25

chicken strip kind of place and so we

2:27

had some chicken strips and I think Andy

2:28

had a chicken sandwich

2:30

and he started telling me stories about

2:32

Jimmy Bryant and uh and you know which

2:35

was great and then he pulled out this

2:36

guitar and it just you know kind of blew

2:39

my mind because I just love the you know

2:43

when the Finish does interesting things

2:46

with UV and when you get some really

2:47

interesting colors and this is a

2:49

wonderful color and the headstock is so

2:52

Brown and yet you have you know this

2:54

area where the decal is where you know

2:57

it hasn't done that and one of the

3:00

reasons I love this look right here is

3:03

from I remember buying Roy Buchanan's

3:06

second album you know as a as a

3:09

teenager and just loving the back cover

3:12

because it showed him holding his you

3:15

know his Telly and it had you know a

3:17

similar look Pro though not this dark

3:20

and I always thought that was a really

3:22

really cool look on an old

3:25

Telly so um you know we're having all

3:28

these you know conversations about the

3:30

guitar he tells me the backstory on it

3:32

tells me about you know crazy stories

3:34

about Jimmy Bryant who of course had uh

3:37

you know had a traumatic childhood had

3:40

an alcohol problem and you know just had

3:43

kind of a a hard life and uh you know of

3:46

course was an amazingly talented guitar

3:48

player and then uh you know

3:50

unfortunately he was not really playing

3:52

Tellies when Andy knew him he was

3:54

playing you know he had that red Gibson

3:56

I don't know if it was a 335 or 355 that

3:59

he was was playing at that time and then

4:02

he had like some Magneton and a murf

4:04

guitar and some other things that he

4:05

played but uh you know his playing was

4:09

still uh you know pretty undiminished at

4:12

that point you know especially in the

4:13

earlier

4:15

70s but uh yeah but you know we started

4:19

talking about this Telly he told me

4:21

about it and then he said if you want to

4:22

borrow it you can and uh I said

4:24

absolutely can I do an episode on it he

4:26

said absolutely so thank you to Andy so

4:30

here's a little bit about Andy uh of

4:32

course he was he was born out in

4:34

California in Santa

4:36

Monica uh he uh you know gigged and

4:39

worked in Aerospace some and of course

4:41

was married to Jimmy Bryant one of Jimmy

4:43

Bryant's daughters for a while

4:47

um and he uh you know is a he was a was

4:51

and is a gigging you know blues

4:53

guitarist and by 1997 he started playing

4:57

with a cat named Smokey Wilson that was

5:00

on the rounder record label I think he

5:02

was actually on Bullseye which was kind

5:03

of like a you know a division of rounder

5:06

or was being distributed by rounder

5:08

whatever the case may

5:10

be and so when he started playing with

5:14

Smokey uh Smokey said I have a guitar I

5:18

need you to do some work on and so he

5:22

pulled out this guitar that was

5:25

completely covered in black soot in fact

5:28

it looked black

5:31

and so Andy took the guitar he got a

5:35

warm washcloth and he started wiping it

5:38

down and he soon found a spaghetti

5:44

logo and you know when he took the neck

5:47

off it ended up you know being June of

5:51

52 and signed by taddio you know

5:55

Gomez so yeah a real deal Black Guard

6:00

underneath the soot unfortunately the

6:03

guitar you know had a fair amount of

6:05

damage uh the uh the tuners were either

6:09

bent or a lot of them were missing their

6:12

buttons and uh the bridge pickup was

6:15

dead uh the electronics were were

6:17

covered in

6:19

corrosion and uh the neck pickup was

6:21

gone because the pit guard had been

6:24

routed and had this big Japanese you

6:27

know like' 60s era pickup that was just

6:29

hanging in there and it wasn't even done

6:31

right and so here's a shot of the uh

6:34

ugly routing that was done underneath

6:36

the pit guard and plus you can see some

6:38

of the less AED finish from under the

6:42

guard um so you're probably asking the

6:45

question how did the guitar get so dark

6:48

well the guitar was given to Smokey by a

6:52

guy named

6:54

Spider-Man so I'm guessing this wasn't

6:57

you know the real Spider-Man with which

6:59

I you know is there a real Spider-Man

7:02

and it's like which which actor are we

7:03

talking about no Spider-Man apparently

7:06

was a guy who worked on cars in the

7:08

Watts area and he had a garage and

7:12

hanging in the garage was this guitar

7:14

and so it was hanging by like a coat

7:17

hanger and it was in a window and so

7:19

that's where it got all of the wear and

7:22

that's also where you get this

7:24

interesting part because apparently it

7:26

was not hanging you know just straight

7:28

in the sunlight but there was just

7:30

enough Shadow from the lip of the

7:33

bridge that uh this area did not get uh

7:38

the full sunlight and so that's you know

7:41

really really cool of course you still

7:44

have you know a bit of the outline of

7:45

the uh the bridge cover that's some

7:48

people call it the

7:50

ashtray and yeah it's just a really cool

7:53

guitar of course you've got some

7:55

replaced Saddles here these are

7:57

titanium um you know this is a uh

8:00

Seymour Duncan Antiquity from the the 9s

8:03

that uh that Andy put in there and this

8:06

is a pickup that Andy wound himself

8:09

because of course the original neck

8:11

pickup was gone he did take the original

8:13

dead Bridge pickup and the

8:16

wiring and uh and the

8:19

uh yeah and he uh he put them in a bag

8:23

and uh so when he gave the guitar back

8:25

to Smokey he uh he had a bag of you know

8:29

parts and and said you know don't ever

8:31

throw this

8:33

away uh yeah we we know that's going to

8:36

end badly so yeah so Andy played with uh

8:41

with Smokey for a couple of years and

8:43

then unfortunately Smokey had a stroke

8:47

and retired from

8:49

performing uh a couple years later in

8:54

2006 uh Andy was was visiting with

8:56

Smokey and asked him if he would be

8:59

willing to to sell this guitar to

9:01

him and they agreed on a price and Andy

9:05

bought it and took it

9:07

home

9:09

and just a a couple of days

9:12

later Smokey's wife called back and she

9:16

said I'm sorry but uh Smokey wants the

9:20

guitar back and of course Andy's a good

9:23

guy he didn't you know say it's a Deal's

9:25

a deal or anything like that so he took

9:27

the guitar back and uh and but there was

9:31

a promise that if he ever did you know

9:33

decide to sell the guitar that he would

9:35

sell it to Andy so apparently you know

9:39

you know Smokey had some sentimental

9:42

value attached to the guitar because of

9:44

Spider-Man or who who knows what but he

9:46

just couldn't even though he might not

9:48

have been able to really play it he just

9:51

couldn't you know not have the guitar

9:53

with him so fast forward a bit more we

9:56

get to

9:57

2015 and smoke Wilson passes away and

10:02

after that uh Andy contacts the Widow

10:06

and the Widow remembers and she says

10:09

that you know that she will sell him the

10:12

guitar so he goes down there to get it

10:15

and uh she hands him the guitar and says

10:18

where's the the bag with the parts in it

10:20

and she said oh they were covered in

10:22

Rust I threw them

10:24

away so there went the original Bridge

10:27

pickup and the the wiring so that was

10:30

gone but he uh you know still got a

10:35

really really great Telly that uh you

10:39

know again after he got it he had it

10:42

refereed by uh by Glazer's shop

10:47

uh yeah and it's

10:50

just a really great Black Guard I've

10:53

played a lot of black guards and I have

10:55

to say this is one of the better

10:58

sounding ones and this is not even

11:00

original pickup I mean this is a uh a uh

11:03

you know Seymour Duncan Antiquity it

11:06

just this guitar just has a really nice

11:08

compression to it and it's fat has a

11:11

really good beefy neck but it's not

11:15

crazy big you know yeah it just yeah it

11:20

just has a really great feeling neck it

11:22

you know it's had a good

11:23

refret sounds plays good

11:27

[Music]

11:29

a

11:34

[Music]

12:03

modern wiring on it so

12:08

both here's the

12:10

[Music]

12:21

neck and and he has a lot of people like

12:24

to have the neck pickup lower in volume

12:28

because you kind of get a better two

12:30

pickup sound you know by by doing that

12:33

but uh yeah it's a really really great

12:37

sound and guitar with a really great

12:41

story um yeah just you know a good mix

12:47

of uh of Flathead and uh and philli

12:51

screws so you can see that like the the

12:55

bridge is mounted with philli screws but

12:58

then it's got flath screws holding the

13:00

bridge in and you know Phillips here

13:03

straight head here flat heads holding

13:05

the pit guard on yeah lots of uh you

13:10

know Flathead on the uh the string tree

13:13

so flatheads holding the tuners in yeah

13:18

and Phillips on the neck plate so yeah

13:22

really really cool guitar so now for uh

13:27

comparison's sake let's let's pull out a

13:30

uh clean 1953 so another friend let me

13:34

borrow this clean 1953 Telly so then you

13:38

can really get a look at the difference

13:40

in the uh uh the coloring on the

13:44

headstock and the coloring on the body

13:48

so uh yeah and let's let's hear this 53

13:51

while we got it now this

13:53

53 is pretty

13:56

much all original uh obviously the

14:00

switch tip has been replaced and you

14:03

have the addition of the uh the less you

14:07

know the little letters there but

14:09

otherwise you know it's even got the

14:11

original tiny Frets on it which frankly

14:13

I really don't like but uh we're going

14:16

to I'm I'm going to do my best to play

14:18

this thing because I just really don't

14:20

like the little Frets but here we go

14:24

let's see

14:27

[Music]

14:56

uh then you've got the uh of course this

14:58

is required just like it was you know

15:01

originally where you have Bridge pickup

15:03

neck pickup you know and then you have

15:06

the mud sound which you know of course

15:08

the muds

15:09

[Music]

15:18

in okay enough of that uh here's the

15:21

neck pickup by itself in the middle

15:23

position

15:26

[Music]

15:34

nice out and neck uh then one of the fun

15:38

tricks is to do like the strap thing

15:39

where you balance the selector switch

15:41

and if you do it just right you can get

15:42

the two pickups together uh let's see

15:49

um there you go

15:53

[Music]

16:07

[Music]

16:10

great signing guitar I you know if I

16:12

were going to play this thing which is

16:14

not mine to begin with so it's kind of a

16:15

moot point but yeah I'd want bigger

16:17

Frets on the thing but uh yeah really

16:21

really cool guitar so yeah fun to be

16:25

able toh to do a

16:27

comparison you know of uh all original

16:30

53 with a uh very roadworn 52 also with

16:35

some replaced Parts also I forgot to

16:38

mention on this one of one of the really

16:40

cool spots on this is right around the

16:43

uh the strap button here where I don't

16:45

know if that was something on a strap or

16:48

some kind of strap lock or what happened

16:51

here but it's got a cool cool Mark there

16:54

also this guitar has a split in it so uh

16:59

it's right

17:01

here and uh so here's where and it's and

17:04

it's along the seam of where the the

17:07

wood was you know the pieces of wood

17:09

were glued together so along this seam

17:11

it's cracked and it's split and so uh

17:16

you know it goes you know all the way to

17:18

the other side however it is not moved

17:21

in many many years and it's kind of a

17:23

hard fix cuz the wood has swelled and

17:25

such so it's not you know you can't

17:27

really just clamp the body back together

17:30

and put some glue in there at this point

17:31

so it have to get worse as it were so

17:36

yeah so I have to thank Andy for uh for

17:40

letting me borrow this guitar oh

17:43

titanium uh Saddles which sound really

17:46

good again uh one of the better signing

17:49

black guards I've played really nice

17:51

instrument and uh yeah thank you to Andy

17:56

and uh also thanks to one of my buddies

17:59

for letting me borrow uh less this 53

18:03

that's really nice to be able to have an

18:05

example that's pretty clean does have

18:07

some uh fretboard wear there and there's

18:10

some wear on the back of the neck but uh

18:13

this one's pretty darn clean even has

18:16

the original case to it that's been uh

18:19

covered with some uh tape and like wood

18:22

paneling or something but uh anyo all

18:26

right guys well I hope you've enjoyed

18:28

this episode this look at a real

18:31

hardcore roadworn 52 Telly and we'll see

18:34

you next time bye-bye
