Basically, he's a king of crime in Victorian London. He was once a highway man but now has moved on to blackmail bribery, murder, murder, etc to get whatever he wants out of this
Rachel:what a bad boy is that? Boy is
Unknown:that all not included being a highway man or does he like socialized now he's like PhD, or did his dissertation murder
Margie:started as a highway man and that he just expanded pretty much like a small business to the to a large corporation. So diversified, diversified? Exactly.
Rachel:That's a business right?
Margie:He's really wealthy, extremely influential. He kind of has a Robin Hood type legend aura around him in London. A lot of the people that he's killed have actually been really bad people. And that's why you know, I mean, though, as
Rachel:long as they did something bad in their life that makes murder Okay, right. Yeah, exactly. I

Okay, so we had to replace this character because he's still an important part of the plot. Duggan Mackenzie so Dukan Mackenzie is another character he's deceased but he's still central character as he effected both fairly
Rachel:and breed. Zombie that's what he
Margie:he was a he was an orphan who was in love with Farah and best friends with Dorian before he died. And so he kind of like links these two characters together. Okay, like his last
Unknown:name is Mackenzie though. Yeah. So what is he pharaohs, you'll see. Alright.
Margie:We're gonna step it back. It's really the beginning is super cute. Okay, getting super. All right. All right. Okay, so the story starts out by introducing Dougie Mackenzie, who has just had his poems whipped by a nun in an orphan orphanage and they're like, bloody they're so good, really bad. He's sitting outside crying and trying to be tough when fear comes up to him and wraps up his wounds and tells them stories of her father who was an earl during the War of Crimea, and it fought and battles and like it's trying to distract him. And it's been exposition bomb. Nice. Yeah. And so he's 11. And she's, or he's, yeah, I think he's 10 or 11. And she's eight. Okay, so Farah, and do good. Both live in this horrible orphanage. Um, he's,
Unknown:he's a nice orphanage.
Margie:No, it's not a nice.
Unknown:Is there ever one like in media? Is there ever a nice
Margie:one? No, not Victorian a good like there's
Unknown:never been like a story of a nice orphanage. Children are happy like
Margie:I think the only good thing about it is that it's not a workhouse so
Unknown:also not children's slaves. Okay, that was a was a trigger warning because it's no child.
Margie:Child slavery. So do give is the bastard child of the, the McKenzie clan like Laird lard, I don't know and whose mother was killed was murdered and she was basically put in the orphanage because his dad in frickin one because he's a bastard. Farah is the daughter of an Earl and her parents and sister both passed away from colera. She's due to marry a man who has hers who was her father's age. And once she's old enough, and the man Warrington has dropped her off at the orphanage to basically grow up until she's ready to get married to him.
Rachel:Oh, good. Yeah. All right, fantastic. Looking at I'm posting an Instagram thing.
Margie:Okay, okay.
Rachel:I'm looking at Colorado Galera cholera, cholera.

So I wasn't here was a different basically Doogan and Farah become really close to the orphanage like they kind of wink wink. No, I mean, she's a people are children. They are children. Rachel:I'm just saying I was 16. And it was my current husband.
Margie:Oh, I was I think 11 or 12. But I didn't really get Tong until I got
Rachel:my current husband.
Unknown:Your first house? My first? Yes.
Margie:So they become really really closers. It's really cute. Seems were like she said something along the lines of like, well, nobody else is here to love you. So I'm gonna do it for you.
Unknown:That's some Negan girl and she's
Margie:like, Ah, she's been cute. It's Yes. Yes, she is. I swear she's okay. All right.
Rachel:All right. Yeah. All right.
Margie:I really like sure I got your back. Love. You, too, are all good, right? And they look out for each other. And then generally, they're being like family to one another. The data so they also so there's one scene where do you begin finds out that fair is due to marry this other loser? And he's like, nope. So she's at this point. 10. He's 14. And they they go and quote unquote, get married. It's like very West Side Story. Yeah, okay. Yeah. Okay. They don't do it with a priest or anything. They basically just like, hey, love you love you back.
Unknown:Okay, yeah.
Rachel:Yeah. All right.
Unknown:I'm trying to imagine myself being 14 and looking at a 10 year old and be like, yeah, it's not
Margie:scribed as like, creepy or sexual. It's more just kind of like,
Rachel:still like, I
Unknown:wouldn't want anything to do with someone who's like four years younger than me at that age.
Margie:Well, I'll tell you, he does so he sees like 1314 and she's 10. So um, he calls for his fairy. Berra fairy, right? Yeah. Which is an important part of the plot. Sorry,

Margie:Okay, so one night, actually, I think it was like the night after their quote unquote wedding Purple Nurple wakes up to find Ferris sliding into his bed and she's like freaking out and he's like, What the frick is wrong? And Farah tells Dougan that one of the priests in the orb orphanage had tried to molest her getting off to a great He's a priest
Rachel:was about to make a real backhanded shady Catholicism joke but I'm not going
Margie:to try fighting against that listener.
Unknown:Insert your own joke here. Yeah.
Rachel:Two of the three now you're thinking it well, one version in this room is Catholic one used to be Catholic and I'm not so you know, whatever, it's fine.
Margie:I mean no, okay, we're gonna get into that so do get in her attempt to run away from the orphanage, but they're caught by the police and a complete bitch of a nun. So long story short, do you didn't stabs and kills the priest at 13 years old? Metal is fun. Yeah, yeah. So do can get sent to prison and sentenced for like, at least seven years, I think of hard labor fair actually does manage to escape from the orange orphanage and follows him to where his prison is.
Unknown:I'm gonna call it now. Seven years in prison, like he's gonna come up 21 and hot. Well,
Margie:so she leaves breaded cheese Ferb every fucking night and was present for seven years with a letter for him. Just to know like, Hey, I'm out here. Like, you know, things gonna be good. Doing in this interim? She is working for someone who's in the McKenzie clan, like a grocer who's in the mcheza Clan, okay, all right, are under their way. And so that's how she gets the bread and cheese. So no ciphers yet. No surplus yet syphilis wasn't covered until the very end. Okay, so she kind of like gets adopted by them, which is really cute. She has this really interesting battle. Okay. All right. And so, however, she goes to the prison one day and she finds out that he has died of tuberculosis. So now her husband and that husband is dead, and she really has nothing to keep her where she is.
Unknown:This is what happens when you don't vaccinate your kid freeze and die in prison.
Rachel:That's what really happens they don't get sick and die but like, well, I guess he did. But you know, yeah, but there's there's extra steps

Margie:So from there she moves to London and takes up a job as a maid in Scotland Yard. Like you know, cleaning person or whatever. And eventually she becomes a clerk there because someone sees like, Hey, you're like good at reading or writing you should help us okay, cool. And go in and go Well, actually, so she considers herself and in that time, she considers herself a widow. Mackenzie actually a widow

Margie:she's she consider i i personally think she does have more out of personal protection because as a widow, she gets more freedom in society that she would it's just like a single woman.

Margie:she takes on his name for another reason that will be revealed later but he doesn't want her name so right Jolene is fairly Townsend. Okay, so she takes on the name of fairly Mackenzie for her own personal production. Yeah. Okay. So in the book we from when she says we're going to jump from when she loses Dugan. So the cat when I say loses, do that, I mean, like he stabs the price. Okay, right. So we jumped to 17 years later. Cool. So it's been a long time. She's
Rachel:10 years after she found out he got
Margie:killed instead. So overall, she's happy if lonely. She goes to work and so the day that's described her first kind of day that we get with her, she goes into the work in the midst of a mob as Dorian Blackwell has been arrested and the city is not happy. Yes, gasp her boss Carlson morally is quote unquote interrogating Dorian about kinky murders of guards that had occurred recently. So basically, morally morally beating the shit out of Blackwell with Blackwell chained to a chair.

Margie:who they have now like there's there's something going on. So um, Blackwell gets out of prison three nights later, and he immediately starts bribing inspectors of Scotland Yard for more info about Farah
Rachel:creepy judgey face I love Lexi's judgy phase Yeah,
Margie:so
Unknown:hey listen are arrested in get the shit beat out of you by police. This is not what you do after
Rachel:thing is not the logical next step.
Margie:No. So one night Farah is out with Carlton Morley her boss and the good theater. They have a lovely night. He's very sweet, charming and handsome. And at the end of the night in front of her door he asked her to marry him
Rachel:that's a jump. They kiss
Margie:they've been going out for a while okay, like a long while so like that was one thing that um, Blackwell found out about Farah when he was started asking around is that she's going out with Carlton and he's like, not cool. And yeah,
Unknown:like the little the The Fresh Prince of Bel Air Carlton. do that is to my matching. romanced by ladies and gentlemen
Margie:ever. So Carlton, and fair kiss. It's nice. She's like, Cool, good. Yes. And she says she's think she's gonna think about it, because she's just not sure she's she's pretty happy with being a widow because she's got freedom. independence, independence. Yeah. And if I don't, even if I don't have a family, at least I'm independent. So that's what she really wants us. She wants a family. They always do, which is fine. Well, that's your jam. That's cool. She's never had one that's very chaotic, because your parents died when she was four. Right? So, but when she gets it back into our apartment, she's still thinking about Dougan because she can do it. And we're like, we're always gonna be together. Whatever stupid. She walks in love is dumb. Love is dumb. She walks into our apartment, it's dark, and so she doesn't notice Blackwell brooding of the quarter.

Unknown:Yes. Love it. It's it's very there's a lot of joy sparking god. I'm reading a lot of blogs, which isn't like a whole lot of great stuff, but it's mostly like it's stuff that you can't talk about for now. Oh, no. So what I've read recently that I love that's a little bit junk foodie. Um, it's yeah, it's the Throne of Glass series. Oh. Yeah. Like it's Jeff. It's definitely fantasy. There is a little bit of romance in there. Probably like older teen Okay, so it's not like real heavy on intimacy but it's there. It's like well, I did the series like just finish I just got the book from the library and finish it like in the week that I got it but it was like thick with three C's. Koi just how I like them. Yeah, so that's that was good junk food because you can like read through it and unnecessarily fast but you get caught up in it and you just before you know it the bag whole bag of chips is gone. If you don't want giant food and you want to, you know want to read something that's actually like, more literature and that you're not afraid to show on the bus. I will always plug the Power BI. She wasn't Naomi Watts. Its new meal. Alderman is her name. Okay. Um, so it's like, more revenge The Handmaid's Tale, like the like the whole, like the whole premise is like it's modern day and women somehow developed this power to electrocute. Awesome like, we need that it's so it goes back and forth between Present day where like women, like women go through, like, wait a minute, we can do this and like the changes that go on in modern day with men being scared of women for once, and then in the future when women that's it's basically basically a matriarchy, sweet. Oh, yeah. And about like the end. There's also like the book. It's like a book within a book. Sort of like the Blind Assassin. If you've read I think that's Margaret Atwood. Yeah, it's

Unknown:So like The book The Power is supposed to like a historical fiction written by a man in the future. And there's no from his editor saying, Have you considered using a feminine pen name people might take you more seriously. And it's like, I just it's just disponer like when you're feeling down about how women are treated nowadays that is Lady but that is it made me feel very empowered and happy and wanted to march in the streets and punch Nazis.

On our Twitter, I put out a tweet to one of my favorite characters from the show Sensei and she actually liked the tweet and I was like, Ah, so much it was Jamie Clayton. She plays Noemi marks on Sensei and it's like my favorite cave favorite show. So neat. Yeah, that's exciting. No, that's super exciting to our podcasts. JB
Rachel:read all of this books and also when you don't want to read a book or maybe are driving check out the hidden people. Yeah, the hidden people, which is Lexi has written several episodes for two of which are up now.
Unknown:So it's released every other week, the same week as textual tension. So if you're listening to this on a Tuesday, just got to wait two more days and then the next episode the hidden people will be out. It's really just like a half hour ish each time.
