SPEAKER_00

They say nice things about this guy. They let him resign. They pay him four million bucks. And the next time this guy has a microphone in his face, he literally throws them under the bus, blames his wife, says he did nothing wrong, and then just might as well just spat right in their face.

SPEAKER_03

Well played. Here we go. Guys, needless to say, it has been a week. Razor, let's start in the East because everybody seems to be loading up in this arms race right now.

SPEAKER_02

Well, the East was crazy all season long, and no one seems to want to take a step back. And everybody's looking at the teams that didn't make the playoffs making moves, like the Washington Capitals. They get Alex Tuck and they make the move to bring in their big wingers along with Jordan Cairo. So they it just continued all the way through the draft, through the week. Of course, the Leafs will get to those guys. I know we're gonna get to those guys, but the Washington Capitals, the Bruins make the move. The Philadelphia Flyers trade for Joe Wall. They get their goaltender. Um the East continues to load up. It's hard to imagine one of these teams, three of these teams not making the playoffs next year, but it's inevitable. And it's uh this league is just so competitive right now, guys, with the salary cap opening up. Everybody's competitive. No one's like taking a step back. Even the Chicago Blackhawks going for Bo Byron for the fourth overall pick. They don't want to miss the playoffs next year. It's uh it's getting good. The NHL's not messing around, and and the GMs are are fighting for their lives, it feels like, Commie.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, you know what? Hey, look, I've been paying attention. I've been in one here a little bit in Utah. Byron's in Chicago. Where did Tuck go?

SPEAKER_01

Tuck's in Washington.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's chaos. You've been in the Babcock Babcock blender.

SPEAKER_00

That's why you should turn it off. Yeah, I can't even blame it on Utah. It's just been nothing but Babcock on my phone. Oh, I didn't so I didn't know that. I saw the Kairu thing. I have seen a couple of things, but I didn't know that. So Buffalo, Buffalo couldn't resign Tuck, and so deal. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and then Byron, Byrum said he wasn't gonna sign either as an extension, so they he goes for the fourth pick. Dora Fiev from Vegas goes to the New York Rangers. They pay him 11 sheets a year for seven years. Oh, God. He's Russian.

SPEAKER_01

That's a Russian, right? Yes, sir. He loves New York, boy. Those New York City and Florida. That's where they like it.

SPEAKER_03

11. Commie, let me throw this at you. Bowen Byron didn't want to play second fiddle to Kale McCar. Didn't want to play second fiddle to Rasmus Dali. I think he feels like the sense is that he feels he's an alpha. He feels like he's a number one. He's gonna get that opportunity in Chicago. Do you like that attitude or are you kind of like, why what are you doing? There's a very healthy appetite to be a number two and win Stanley Cups.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, that's a good question. Personally, I like the attitude, but at the end of the day, if I was sitting there, I'd be like, I mean, playing second fill, like Kale McCarr. I mean, that's how do I sign up for that job? That sounds fine to me, but he is a good player. Like that guy's kind of sort of not quietly, but I feel like that guy's been a pretty good player now for quite a while. I mean, not a game in the minors. Yeah, he's been very good. Uh, so at the end of the day, short answer, I do like the attitude. Um, it'll be interesting to see. Well, Chicago will be his chance. There you go. Yeah. You want to you want to be the man? Here it is.

SPEAKER_02

And I I actually really like Chicago going out, but the fourth overall pick now for Chicago is not doing them any good. They even if they got a defenseman, you can get a Bo Byram who's a fourth overall pick himself. He's already won a Stanley Cup. He's played behind McCari, he's played behind Dalene. He knows what it takes to be the number one. And if you're Chicago and you want Bedard to stay, you want all these guys happy, you got to make a move. And and Byron should be the guy that that brings that deal on. So I know they took a lot of heat. It seemed like whatever this phone thing heat means, what I don't know if it matters, but it seemed like people are like, why? The fourth overall, well, fourth overall doesn't mean you're like if a fourth overall pick this year and you got Bo Byron, you're doing pretty good. So I like Chicago swinging for the fence there.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I don't know why Chicago fans would be hating on that one. Yeah, big boy. You know, and and somebody and and you know, you look at the pressure that Chicago's been, and all of a sudden, like San Jose has completely leapfrogged them in the momentum, and Celebrina getting the buzz over Bedard. But how about the week that Mike Greer had with with the Sharks again? I mean, cleaning up at the draft. You get Stenberg, but then trading up to get Ryan Lynn near the uh late first round, but also getting Keaton Verhoff outside of the top 10.

SPEAKER_00

Nodak, Nodak and Saskatchewan go Fort Saskatchewan and North Dakota. San Jose did a great job. Hey, nothing but winners from Fort Saskatchewan. Mark it, the Sharks are winning pretty soon. He needs, I mean, all jokes aside, I do I do really like that kid as a player. Yes, I'm a little bit jaded because he's a Fort Sass guy, North Dakota guy. He needs a couple more years. There's no question. He just started playing defense like three years ago. We've talked about four years ago now, whatever it was, bantam hockey. Um I think that's a great pick. It felt uh how about the like the first nine picks as far as defensemen go? How was it like five defensemen? Six? Yeah, five? Oh, the they're going to go. So yeah, they're going. So no, I think that's a great pick. He's a big kid. He can skate. I think he needs at least, you know, I mean, I I never he needs at least another year at North Dakota, in my opinion, which that's that's not a bad thing. I don't think it should be a rush and let him grow in. They're gonna have a really good, they should have a really good team at North Dakota. So uh yeah, that's awesome. Go go sand.

SPEAKER_03

I think Ryan Lynn, Ryan Lynn, a great character pick as well. And there's a guy who could be running PP1 for them in a couple of years, too.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. They're right there. The Stenberg kid's sick. He's gonna he's gonna offset the the center position, kind of that Barkov type 200-foot player type guy that fits in perfectly. Hey, Stu is asked, our the producer Stu is asking, who's gonna be the next Commodore down the line? It could be Keaton Vera, folks. He's he is trending in that direction in a big way.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Hopefully he likes Rostofsky. Yeah, well, you know, I'd like to set his sights just a little bit higher than the next Commodore. We've got to be maybe the next Ally Afradi, maybe something like that. But I think he is a good player. It's gonna be interesting. He's big and he can move. So yeah, no, it's it's the next Commodore. You can you can find the next Commodore in free agency or undrafted.

SPEAKER_03

Hey, good hey, by the way, speaking of Ally Afradi, our next studio episode coming up uh very soon this coming week. Ally of Frady. Great story. Thanks, Kami. I appreciate that. Well played. That's an ozun. Well played right there. I guess we should get down to what did you guys make of the Brady Kachuk deal? I mean, it really comes out of nowhere last weekend, shocks everybody in the middle of the final round of the U.S. Open. Uh, but boy, everybody gets talking and it really kind of got the dominoes moving this week. Thoughts on this one, Razor? Start with you with the East.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, talking about the East and leaving that out just uh because we need a whole segment on that one. Um it's really not surprising, not surprising at all that he left Ottawa. We we had our we we've all had been able to see the interviews and see this kind of coming down the pipe. We talked about it for the last four months since the Olympics, that Brady seemed to be the number one guy. Um but for him to go to Florida and end up with his brother and just happening, and basically telling Steve Steyos from hindsight when we hear Steve Steos saying he only wanted to go to one place and they make that happen and they make it available. Um it's a different league, huh, Kami? Like these guys calling their shots is something else. I've I can't believe we've gotten to that point, but um I'm curious, you know, it'll be obviously the top nine of the Florida Panthers crazy. We think those two guys are gonna go crazy, the Kachuk Bros, the whole thing. It'll be interesting to see how that all kind of comes together. But but Brady calling his shot and and going to Florida of all places is uh is really something. And and I'm sure the first thing I said to a few people you know around hockey the last couple of days was like Commissioner Bettman can't love this that much. He's gotta be a little interested in how these agents are making this happen and what's gonna happen. Because if you get too much of this and you turn into the NBA, it's it's a whole nother thing. So hopefully this is kind of a one-off summer, but it it is fascinating. And Brady might be the first. Not you know, I know we had the Goudreaux and the Kachuk, I know Matthew already did in Cali, but this one was like right in our face because we knew it was coming, we knew it happened, and it did.

SPEAKER_00

I was I I mean, looking back, I was kind of dying laughing. Oh no, I'm totally committed to Ottawa. Yeah, no, I'm I love Ottawa. Okay, come on now. Jesus Christ, don't treat us like we're stupid. I mean, I know I guess you kind of you gotta say it, but I mean, on the one hand, I'm I I think that's awesome from a player's perspective. That's great. On the other hand, we've talked about it before with these no trade things. Like, and I don't think you can rip on Steve Steyos. Like when you're only I don't I don't know. I thought that was a pretty good return. Like, what else are you supposed to do? And uh at the end of the day, at least he told you that they look, I'm not I'm not coming back here. Like, I'm not I'm not extending this, isn't gonna be long term. So at least you you know, you you can try and get in front of it a little bit, and you you can get the ball and get as good as you can from one team. But yeah, I mean, like you like to touch on what you said, Razor. Like, it's not like this was a total surprise. It will be interesting to see. I know everybody's all thrilled up there in Toronto about we saw Austin Matthews and he you know had a little video, so now he's leaf forever. But we'll see. We'll see. I mean, we got Austin Matthews and we got Connor Hellibuck coming down the pipe here. It will be interesting to see what happens.

SPEAKER_02

C Ball, it is if Hellibuck goes, if this if this hellabuck smoke is fire, that's really, really interesting. Because we didn't really hear much of that. Like we expected these other guys. No. Um, if it if that one goes, oh mama, that's something else.

SPEAKER_00

If hellabuck's gone, I think immediately the Jets should fire Scott O'Neill. It's O'Neill's fault.

SPEAKER_03

Next, next. Get him in there, get him in there. You know, it's it uh I give Steyos credit though, considering the noise, how noisy it was getting with Brady Kachuk and to get in front of it before it blew up. But going back on the on the whole discussion of no trade clauses, look, to have that many guys around the league that have no movement clauses, if you can get them, good on you, right? If someone's gonna give it to you, good for you. But you cannot tell me that there is a third of the league that is worth the price of admission that deserves a no movement clause. And this, and if the players are gonna call the shot and then only say, ah, these are the two teams I'm willing to wave my like, come on, man. Like, you know, you want to do something right, but at the same time, like, don't hell, don't hold the organization hostage that just paid you whatever 50, 60, 70, 80 million dollars over the last however many years. That's the part I think fans, I think fans, media, and that's where I think as the players get more power, and good for them after all these years, after a century of eating it from owners, but at the same time, I I think at some point that maybe the pendulum has swung too far here. And I have and with a new CBA, it's not getting changed anytime soon.

SPEAKER_00

I I'm with you, C Ball. I agree, and I also agree on the NBA point, the razor that you made. Like, we don't want, we don't need the LeBron James super team. Like, I don't like that either. And saying that though, as well, C Ball, and I'm with you on this, but also it's like, hey, like when the guy wins an Olympic gold medal for the country that's just south, I understand there are other things going into it, but at the end of the day, it's just a sport where you know what he's playing for his country. It's not great if he has to go up there and basically apologize for winning. Like, that's not you know, so you I think in in some ways let's be a little bit more mindful up there in Canada and treat, hey, uh I I don't know how to word it without sounding like a total asshole, but just be a little bit more mindful.

SPEAKER_02

If that makes any sense at all, I don't know if it does, but yeah, no, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I can see where it's been a perfect storm, and again, that's that's why it's a bit of a perfect storm, and you just hope that it that's what it is, and it and that goes away. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

We had too many no trades discussion. See Ball, I'm with you. Agree. Way too many no trades. Way too many no trades.

SPEAKER_03

We had a very civil conversation. We had a very civil conversation several months ago about this, but we got it cut out because nobody wanted us to get strangled by get too full of design. But I will say this. Let's not get canceled, fellas. We're moving on. No, we're not getting canceled, but yes, I think anyway, I know we move on. Simon Nemich going to the flames. How about how about the flames, though? Uh they they the flames going all in with two firsts for Simon Nemich out of New Jersey.

SPEAKER_02

Nemich is I I love the move by uh by Calgary to get them. Uh, I think he's a great defender. Two overall pick. You can put him into your lineup. He was behind the Hughes thing. That that's a whole nother issue in New Jersey. For Calgary to swoop in, get that guy. You can build a back end. We love Craig Conroy. You love Craig Conroy, Callie. Um, he's doing a great job, and that's and that's a perfect fit for Calgary. Great job by them.

SPEAKER_00

Quietly, like there's no there's no pressure. We still got another year or two before that arena. Like, you got lots of picks there in Calgary, but move them off. Let's get some players. Let's slowly but surely. I like it. I think Craig's doing a good job. And like I said, the good the goal is I think they got two more seasons, I believe, in the in the dome. The goal is two years from now. Let's be let's be moving up two years from now. So I like the move. I think it's great.

SPEAKER_03

I do want to touch on quickly with the Leafs. Uh obviously, Razor, you touched on Brandon Carlo uh going for a couple of picks, a couple of third rounders. But you know, John Cheka coming in, he's been busy in recent weeks, right? I mean, you look at all the moves he's making. Uh, they land radish, they trade wool, as you mentioned. Uh, they draft Gavin McKenna, I think, as expected. We've speculated that for months. Uh, how about Justin Bieber, though? How like what do you guys think of the NHL? You know, I mean, uh that's a that's a pretty big splash to have one of the biggest stars on the planet stepping up on the stage on draft night. Razor, that's that's that's not nothing. Or commie about this one.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you know what? I'll go first. Uh, because you know what, this is actually one thing that I've actually have seen in the last three days. We wrapped up our 18 holes yesterday in Bieber. I'm like, oh, you know what? Actually, Justin Bieber looked pretty good. He looked pretty good. Uh well, from what I've, you know, I'm not a I'm not a believer or whatever, but the guy's had a great career. From what I've heard and seen of this guy, he kind of looked like a disaster for the last few years. And he played in that charity hockey game in LA, and I heard some stuff about him like skating and then not even showering and right out of the rink, and just he I was actually pleasantly surprised. I thought Justin Bieber looked very good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he did look good. I would have loved to him for him to go along with the whole the Toronto Maple Leaf select, Gavin McKenna. I was I was on the radio, so I was at the golf course, I was heading home, listening to the pick with my son, and he just said, Mr. McKenna, come to the Leafs. I was like, ah, give me the, you know, come on, stay with tradition. But uh, but the beebs being up there, the leagues continues to to be a cool place. And they got him, they got them there. They got him in Buffalo. And um, yeah, for the Leafs, they've had a massive week, right? Cheeka has been all over the place. He's making his moves, he's putting a stamp on things. I like the fact he's putting a stamp on it, uh, similar to kind of what we talked about um in Bo Byrum just saying this is what I'm gonna do, and I want to be the first guy and I want to go. Cheeka's kind of doing the same. Like, this is how I'm gonna run it. I'm not gonna dip my toe in. I'm gonna jump right in. I got the first overall pick. I'm gonna get Jim Hiller, who I like and who Austin Matthews likes, and and we're gonna go from there. So the Leafs are, you know, Kami talked about the last episode, they're trending up. We we thought they'd take McKenna, and now we get to see if Gavin's the real deal. But um, but yeah, the draft was the draft was good with Beebs up there doing that.

SPEAKER_03

Come on, I'll throw this at you. Uh Austin Matthew, Austin Matthews, you know, there's a video he kind of that gets out there as well, and sounds like he's committed. Now, you know, we've seen organizations hire a coach to appease a star just last year with Vancouver hiring Adam Foote to appease Quinn Hughes. And how did that work out in less than a year? God, pack your ish. Um this one with Austin Matthews, does this does this blow the noise down, or what'd you make?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, look, I guess I have to eat my words because a couple months ago I did say Austin Matthews will be gone by the draft. Draft is coming gone, he's still there. So I was definitely wrong about that. I mean, you're gonna have to, like I said, I'm always just guessing. I don't know. Austin, like I said, Austin never called me back about that tea time last summer. So we're not boys yet. So I don't know. But I mean, I I have a hard time seeing him stay in there for much longer. But I know Leaf, I'll just go with the Lee's fan. You know what? He put a video out for the draft. He's staying forever, he's not gonna go anywhere else. I'll just go with it for now. But I do we'll see. But like I said, I was just wrong. I thought he was gonna be gone by the draft. I was wrong. I have to eat my words. We shall see. I'll leave it at that.

SPEAKER_03

There you go. As our producer Stu Stone says, that conversation right there was hockey Illuminati porn. Illuminati Illuminati.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, after a couple of tough months for the old Illuminati, he's just at home just beating it right now. He's so excited.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Uh look, everything's moving so quickly here. So we just want to get this one out. Uh, we'll get into a deeper dive because July 1st is just around the corner here, and there'll be more movement. So uh I want to get to our fan question here. Guys, coming out of the draft, this one's coming from Christopher from Mount Pearl. Coming out of the draft, wondering if Kamehrazer ever had a first round pick or a hyped rookie coming out of the draft and was a star right away or someone who just completely fizzled. Hope and so what do you got for that?

SPEAKER_02

So for me, for me, the big one like I was drafted a year after Joe Thornton in Boston. And and Joe Thornton was uh that's a good one, was as good as it gets. So I didn't see Joe in his first year with Pat Burns where he didn't play much, but I got there and you knew Joe was the guy, even though he was 19 at that time. He played one year, he was the first overall pick. He was gonna be the captain of the Bruins. He was special, different special, very, very different. So um, I think uh Gavin McKenna will have a similar vibe, like it's special. Austin Matthews and Gavin McKenna together, that will be special, they'll be different. Those guys, like again, you get introduced by Bieber, you're already have a different kind of postal code there in Toronto at this point already. So um, no fizzles. I I didn't have a top 10 pick that fizzled around me. Uh, but Joe is the the big one that that I knew going into Boston, he was the guy because he was that first round pick.

SPEAKER_00

I'll go the other way, Razor. Uh Joe Thornton is a good one. We were talking about fizzle. You know, I was never anywhere long enough where really anybody asked me, and I was kind of gonzo, never really paying attention. Tension, but the only time I was like kind of somewhere a little bit, and they would like ask hey, look, like here's what we got coming in, this and that was when I was in Columbus. And you know what? The guy was a nice enough guy. I'm not ripping on him, but the Columbus Blue Jackets, my first year there, the year before, maybe it was his first year coming to camp. They drafted, I think like sixth overall, let's call it, maybe fifth. Nikita Filatoff.

SPEAKER_03

Philatov, yeah, the Russian.

SPEAKER_00

He wasn't in New York or Florida. Oh boy. And I remember my first, so it's my first camp in Columbus, too. And Scott Housen, the GM comes up, he's like, hey, I think we got a really good player here. You know, can you look after and keep an eye on Nikita Filatoff, high pick, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I'm like, yeah, yeah, sounds good, man. Yeah, I'll keep an eye on him for sure. I mean, I went through a couple practices at camp with this guy, and I'm like, this guy stinks. I'm like, A, I think he weighs 115 pounds. He's one of the best looking people I've ever seen. He kind of looked like a he looked, he was very feminine looking. You know what I mean? No, no, If that makes sense, like he had nice eyes. Like I'm like, he could be in a boy band.

SPEAKER_03

Call me, he could be in a boy band. I totally agree. Yeah, because I'm covered in the world juniors, and it was like, this kid could be, this kid could be on like Teen Beat Magazine for anybody who's old enough to remember that.

SPEAKER_00

That is a great way to put it. And I'm like, wow, this guy's really good looking. He doesn't like to play defense and he weighs about a buck 15. And I didn't see it, I kept it to myself, but that's one that and and nothing. I have nothing against Nikita Field at all, but he was not going down to the miners to learn how to play defense. Yeah, he was not interested in going to Springfield, like that was not happening, so that would have been that's that's a big fizzle. Yeah, that's a fizzle. Nothing against Nikita, though. He was a nice guy. We had a few minutes. I'm sure he watches.

SPEAKER_02

I'm sure he watches.

SPEAKER_00

I was just trying not to look into his eyes the whole time.

SPEAKER_03

He's so dreamy, he's so dreamy. Great looking guy. Yeah, good looking kid. Yeah, good looking kid. Yeah, absolutely. Uh less than 50 games, I think, in the NHL, but but maybe one of the more maybe the best looking bust.

SPEAKER_00

There you go.

SPEAKER_03

In NHL history.

SPEAKER_00

Gotta be up there, yeah. Yeah, got it. He went back to the KHL. I don't know. That went well. Yeah. Nikita. Sorry, Nikita, if you're I know you speak English, so if you see this, you're a good dude, though. Anyways.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Uh, time for Don't Puck It Up. Uh, this week's Don't Puck It Up. You know what? Here's mine. NHL. Tighten up the draft. Four hours for a first round. Oh. Come on. And I get first round drafts are are always lengthy in other sports, but come on. This isn't the NFL. And then do it on a Friday. It's like the latest TV night of the year, and you do it on a Friday night. Come on, get this thing fixed.

SPEAKER_02

I love it, C Ball. I was gonna go do that. I love that too. I'll and I'll but I'll pivot real quick. Uh, very simple. We're gonna we're gonna do a July 1st, July 2nd show. We're gonna talk about the free agency, but let's not puck this up, general managers, because this is a really good opportunity. I think this is one of the best opportunities that NHL general managers have had because there's no big stars, there's no big no big fish to land. It's gonna be quiet, but you can secretly make some big moves. So there's enough GMs. We've talked about the splashes, we've talked the Brady Kachuks, but there's enough guys out there that if you're close, you can put yourself over the top with a nice three-year deal for a sixth forward or a ninth forward or a sixth defenseman to put you over the top. So don't puck it up, GMs. Stay aggressive all the way through July 1st. Don't turn your phones off.

SPEAKER_00

I like that. Don't puck it up, Ken Holland. Exactly. Like the puck it up, don't puck it up this year, Ken. Go get it. Yeah, yeah. Don't be doing another darn elf. Don't be that aggressive. Uh my puck it up. You know, we I know we're gonna end up talking about this. Probably it's gonna come up, but I'm sure most people listening probably saw my best buddy's press conference, old Mike Babcock back. And I'll tell you what, I was laughing when I was listening to the the highlights or lowlights, however, and oh, you can change. You know, I read this. My my Twitter mentions, and I haven't even said anything, and it is a catastrophe. I'll tell you what, for those people who say that you know, people can change, and you know, well, you know, people deserve second chance. I totally agree. He got his second chance, and he blew that in 50 days. You want to give him a third chance, go ahead. And people are saying, well, you know what, he's changed. And after listening to that press conference, I'm like, yeah, he has changed. I actually totally agree. He's changed for the worse. I think he's gotten more defiant, I think he's gotten more arrogant. Like the Columbus Blue Jackets have to be losing their marbles. They say nice things about this guy, they let him resign, they pay him four million bucks, and the next time this guy has a microphone in his face, he literally throws them under the bus, blames his wife, says he did nothing wrong, and then just might as well just spat right in their face. But, anyways, don't puck this up, Babs. Here we are. You got another opportunity, and this time you got the best player in the world. So here's your opportunity. Let's see if he can make it to training camp. That'll be a first step. Can Babs get through prospect camp without bullying the kids? And to tie this into the draft, too. Any of those Edmonton Oiler picks this on if you're a parent of an Edmonton Oiler draft pick, keep an eye on your kid. And you might want to go to prospect camp and talk to your child because who knows what Babs is doing. But for the don't puck it up part, don't puck this up, Babs. This is death. I mean, I thought you were done. I thought you were toxic when you screwed it up in Columbus. The Oilers of all teams will give you the Oilers will give anybody another chance. Don't puck this one up because the phone ain't ringing again. Ken Holland ain't calling if this thing goes sideways. And that's it. Sorry.
