Viewer discretion is advised—Kelsey has officially entered the Temple.

This week, we’re taking a brief detour from the chaos of 1998 and beginning a brand-new journey through Lucha Underground, a wrestling show that combines lucha libre, mythology, cinematic storytelling, unforgettable characters, and enough drama to make Kelsey feel immediately at home.

From the opening scene, it is clear that this is not a traditional wrestling show. We are introduced to shadowy figures, ancient warriors, underground fight-club energy, and Dario Cueto—a promoter who promises opportunity, money, and glory while somehow looking less trustworthy every time he speaks.

The Temple itself immediately becomes part of the story. The concrete, the stairs, the intimate crowd, Dario’s office, and the cinematic camera work give the show a true home base. It feels less like a weekly wrestling broadcast and more like entering a fully realized world.

In this episode:

  • Kelsey enters the Temple for the very first time
  • We break down Lucha Underground’s cinematic opening and mythology
  • Dario Cueto establishes himself as wrestling’s newest deeply suspicious promoter
  • Matt Striker and Vampiro immediately become one of our favorite commentary teams
  • Blue Demon Jr. and Chavo Guerrero open the series with generations of lucha history behind them
  • Sexy Star makes an instant impression against Son of Havoc
  • Konnan explains Prince Puma’s connection to the seven Aztec tribes and the deeper meaning behind the luchador’s mask
  • Johnny Mundo and Prince Puma deliver a main event so good that Kelsey stops taking notes
  • Dario proves that the promised $100,000 may never have been anyone’s to win
  • We become extremely excited—and slightly concerned—about the Temple’s stairs

The cinematography feels like a prime-time drama. The wrestling feels fresh. The lore already runs deep. The characters are larger than life, and this is only episode one.

SPEAKER_00

Hello, everyone, and welcome to another edition of the New to Wrestling Podcast. This week, guys, we have a kind of a little departure um for us. Um, don't worry if you are been here for the 1998 news, we'll be back to it eventually. Um that 30-year-old T isn't going anywhere, I promise.

SPEAKER_02

And don't I know it?

SPEAKER_00

So, um, but um you guys are in for a little bit of a treat today because as you know, Kelsey is new to wrestling, therefore, there is so much wrestling we have not even begun uh to tap into. And um, if you didn't listen to our interview uh with Nick Pearl of the Rambling About Wrestling podcast, we talked um just briefly about Lucha Underground. And I love Lucha Underground. I um remember when it was like out and about in the world in like two, I guess it's 2014 and like onward. Don't exactly remember when I came across it. Um, those were dark years. Um, so some I'm like, whoa, those were dark years. Somewhere in there, I was definitely escaping to the world of um Lucha Underground, but I knew that this was going to be right up Kelsey's alley because it is just it is it's it's you know, it's wrestling, which you know we love. Um, but it's the like the aesthetic and like character work like turned up to like 11 that like I absolutely knew that you would eat up. Um to be so like um I but I felt like I needed you to have like a a better base understanding of wrestling before we dive into all of that because it is so much you have to you have to learn how to get the basic reading before you start dipping into the different genres.

SPEAKER_02

I will tell you.

SPEAKER_00

No, absolutely, absolutely uh but to be seen this way because my god, it was but guys, um so we are going to do something a little bit um kind of new for the show. Um, any we are going to continue this um a little uh adventure into Lucha Underground um just because I love it so much. Kelsey loves it so much. Um, but don't worry, we're still gonna go back in time. Um we're gonna probably do it on like an every other um kind of episode basis whenever we're not interviewing wrestlers. Um, which if you guys have been around for a couple of years, you know pops off every summer because the show, like me, um, becomes social with the warm weather.

SPEAKER_02

So like it's honestly so true. And you and I are just like in the cold winter months, we are so we are so work is so much we are so not with it. Like, yeah, it's it's actually kind of messed up that the most functioning sort of I feel is actually I don't know if that's true. I was gonna say during summer, but actually I feel like a very locked-in individual in the winter, and now I'm just Lucy Gussi with it, which is the best time to have all these interviews because we're just like wheeling and dealing fancy free. But this is like the nicest thing you've done for us. Like you've done so many nice things for us, but this is this is a beautiful thing. This is a beautiful thing.

SPEAKER_00

I'm excited. Um, all right, guys. So um now me patting my own head, insane. Um so starved.

SPEAKER_01

You're like, ooh, perfection.

SPEAKER_00

All right, guys. Let's set the scene. Uh we open um with that classic like Lucha Underground logo that like um it gives that like Dolby surround kind of like vibe.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um and then I know a lot of you bitches have this tatted. I know a lot of you bitches have this logo tatted.

SPEAKER_00

I just and if you do show us, please share. Please you can please uh you can share it with us at N2 the number W podcast on Instagram. Please do. We love we I love a little bit of a lot of people. We'll love to see that. Um so um, but we have what is probably the most like cinematic opening sequence of a wrestling show ever. Um, it is just just like choreographed movie-esque fight scene. Um, and we had like this one mask, like luchador essentially like talking to this like shadowy figure, um, like being like, come with me. And then it kind of like opens up um into the next little promos, which is and then it goes into like the history of like um like the seven tribes, like the seven Aztec tribes, and like the hundred years of lucha libre, and like eight uh it's oh, it's so good. Um, it really kind of sets the scene for like what we're um about to like dive into. Um, and then that brings us to our um our kind of our head honcho, our seemingly um main uh antagonist uh is going to be the pro the promoter, the owner, um, the big bad himself, Dario Cueto. Um and like I love it because he he really just he fulfills that like skeevy um boss, you know, rat like boss. Yes, the grease scene. Um like unwillingness. Well, I mean Hispanic. Um it's a different ballgame.

SPEAKER_02

They're playing with different roles over there, and I should run this.

SPEAKER_00

So um we get the kind of like we kind of get a sense of like what he's about, but he's really playing that like ratty-esque promoter, big promises, not a lot of like willingness to actually pay, you know, just that like a lot of money, but he's stingy for some reason.

SPEAKER_02

Right, right, right. Weird, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and then uh that takes us to, I mean, essentially he shows up at in like various Mexican promotions. Um, and this is all in the opening segment, by the way. This is all just like in cinema. Um so uh he's apparently been like going to like Mexican promo promotions, just like offering up like stacks of cash and being like, come fight for me. And like in America, like I'll give you your like American debut, like in like uh it's very like fight club-esque um kind of vibe. Um, and then that takes us into the actual temple itself. We've got like a whole band playing. Um, we meet the commentary team of Matt Stryker and Vampiro, Vampiro of WCW uh fame, as well as being um well traveled in Mexico. Um, Matt Stryker had his little stint in uh WWE as a wrestler, transitioned um into commentary on his kind of way out. Um, but this combo is one of my favorite combos in commentary, in wrestling commentary, I think, ever.

SPEAKER_02

Um, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh it it is the combination of the love that Vampiro has for Lucha Libre and the respect that he has for it and the experience he like brings with the just absolute like uh fantastic explanations of wrestling. Um he Matt Stryker can like break down wrestling like for the new to wrestling people. Um he's telling you exactly why the move is is damaging, what the wrestler needs to do to get out of it, like you know, it he just does such a great job of explaining like what is going on, and in a like it's the pacing is good, the information is good, he doesn't he throws it back to Vampiro. Um, and Vampiro is there for like he is the comedy, he is the experience, like um it just it works. I love it.

SPEAKER_02

It really, and I was Crystal and I were just talking about this sensation or this phenomenon, and you would know exactly what this is when you work with a specific person in either customer service or food service, and that one person where the two of you lock in, and without having to say words, you bob and weave and this and that and throw things together, and I got the like there's minimal communication, but like that's how the dynamic felt between them because it's like I'm giving you this, you're giving me that, you're saying this, I'm saying that. Like it felt so like ego-less, like so equally balanced. That little live cam kind of feeling on the oh that they they cut back to it.

SPEAKER_00

There, yeah, there is a shot of, and again, like kudos to Lucha Underground for doing something completely different as far as the camera work goes. Yes, both incredible as far as like the general aesthetic, like the filter, the the lighting all is unique to Lucha Underground. Um, wow, but also the like um that cam to the uh to the commentary is something that they use now when like WWE.

SPEAKER_02

I was just gonna say because now you see it, right?

SPEAKER_00

Um but back then before new new new new. They would cut to you know, when they had like a larger speaking segment, they would, you know, pan over to the to the announce table. But like having a live reaction feed, like while the action is happening, is a a man because when vampiro goes, I gotta get up, like if you're listening, like okay, you he stood up, but like and then watch this man get up clapping, pacing, like so into the match, it's it adds a little something. And so fantastic. Um, we get into the temple. The temple is I love the temple because it is so simple. It is entrance stairs, ring, Dario Queto's office, that's it. It's so fierce, and I that it's I love it because it's like it's one of those like like plays where the set is so simple, um, and it's the characters that are are the play. Um and that's why it it's in part why it relies so heavily on the cinematic aspect and the backstage segments and the the like um segments in his office, it's because you they literally don't have the space. But I think it it just it makes it so special um when it's just like this is where this is where the show it gives the same vibe as like what I imagine the ECW arena like felt like where it's like an intimacy. This is uh this is our spot, this is where we come back to, um, like this is where this show lives.

SPEAKER_02

Of home base, it's so true. And I I don't ever think about that, like in terms of the WWE obviously travels, like obviously I know that, but to make that connection where it's like the 2300 arena is the 2300 arena, like I'm like right, but and this is the temple is we're meeting at the temple, we're going to the temple, we're watching Lucha Underground.

SPEAKER_00

I like don't didn't like make that what it is in my head until it's it's also like this is your first episode, so you haven't seen like you wouldn't know that they all just it's all takes place here. Um I also love the stairs fantastic, but it also it forces them to get creative in the space. Um because it's like if you're always operating out of the same space, like eventually you're gonna have to like spice it up, you're gonna have to find a new way to entertain people because they will have seen in one way or another most things. Um, so it gets pretty it gets pretty crazy um the way that they incorporate just that entire warehouse again.

SPEAKER_02

Like, what's his he said he was like this this becomes a character in and of itself, like the building is a character in and of itself, and I was like T.

SPEAKER_00

I love that. Um Dario Queto welcomes everybody to the temple. Um, he's basically just like I have invited all of the best fighters from all over the world. Um and I believe in what we're doing here so much so that I am offering a hundred thousand dollar signing bonus to the wrestler, um, to sorry, the Luigi Lore that impresses me the most. And you're like, okay, he you know, he's got the he's got the the briefcase full of money. We're like, all right, sure, sure, sure. Um, and then that's gonna take us into I actually didn't mind the the promo. It was very, you know, get rich or die trying.

SPEAKER_02

And you're like absolutely, yeah, no, huge fan.

SPEAKER_00

Um uh, and then that takes us into our first contest, which is Blue Demon Jr., um, the third generation, the third iteration, however you wanna um call it, taking on Chavo Guerrero. How fun!

SPEAKER_02

Amazing. I literally said I was like, what a perfect inaugural match for this because it's like two two like stalwarts of Luchador. So you see them coming out, and like I don't know Blue Demon Jr., but I know obviously he comes from a lineage of Luchador, so it's like I'm sure people there are like, oh shit, like and obviously the Guerreros, like, do we even and Blue Demon, like that character is like in Mexico, is like bait, it's like like a comic book hero.

SPEAKER_00

Like he's in cartoons, he's like I love that that character, like, and the guerreros are such a like just profound family that has had so much success in wrestling. Um, that these like two uh like they they dip into it like a little bit. They talk about like how their families have you know butted heads like along the way, because obviously you're gonna. Um, wrestling's not that big of a world. Um, so it's great. It's two veterans, two people who are very in the know of what they're doing. Um, it's a it's a match you'd expect two veterans to have. It is like there's a feeling out process, they're like trying to get the better of each other. Um the blue demon gets like a leg injury at some point, but he ends up picking up the victory over um Chavo with like a crazy submission. The legs look like a sharpshooter, um, but the upper body part is kind of like in like a like I don't even know how to describe it. Like you do um, it's like a full stretch, like it's crazy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like you're it's like you're on the ground, but like you're sideways, and you're like, I don't know. I am I imagine it's what like a scorpion's body, like it's like half abdominal stretch, half sharpshooter.

SPEAKER_00

It's very it's it's ow.

SPEAKER_02

The technical term is ouchy.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I thought it was fantastic. Um, and then we get a cutscene to Dario discussing in his office over some Scotch brandy, who knows? Um uh Conan, who's basically he's just Dario's like running his mouth. He's like, Oh my god, like I'm so excited like a legend like you would be like willing to like work for me, blah blah blah blah. And Conan goes, I don't know about all that working for you bullshit, but I want a piece of that. He's like, I want a piece of that. What do you what do you say, Fetty? Fetty, bro. The Fetty that you keep throwing around.

SPEAKER_02

This is the show for me. There's immediately we're using the slang, like we're saying, like, oh, he got hella air. They're like, they're like, I'm more concerned about that feti you're throwing your eyes at. I was the stupidest team in my life.

SPEAKER_00

Um uh they they're like discussing um this like luchador that Conan has apparently taken under his wing. Um, and then Dario uh lets us know that he has signed um one of the hottest free agents in the world, and at this point he very much so was. Um, it's Johnny Mundo, aka Johnny Nitro, aka John Morrison, aka Johnny Elite, Johnny TV, whatever you want to call him.

SPEAKER_02

Um he's had Johnny Nitro.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, so that's him.

SPEAKER_02

I I kept looking at him and going, like, he is familiar to me.

SPEAKER_00

And I also know Prince Puma, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

SPEAKER_02

Xavier did ask me, he's like, Do you want to know who they are before? And I was like, I might, but not yet. Like, we're we just got here, but like, let me see. Let me see.

SPEAKER_00

So please, everyone, um, respect. Um uh so then that takes us into um uh another video package of Prince Puma getting trained by Conan. Like he's like Conan's explaining um basically the origin of Prince Puma. And he's essentially goes into like how the seven Aztec tribes each had their own champion, um, and their champion would go off and like fight, and they're those were the original luchadores. Um, you know, it's like the original Earthbrenders were the badger moles.

SPEAKER_02

Um okay, okay.

SPEAKER_00

They go into like the these champions would have these like fights, and they would um the winner would take the head of the loser, and today's um uh luchadors like express that with the mask, so it's like that's why there's such a significant, like a historical significance behind the mask, and why it is such a like so looked down upon um if a luchador should lose their mask, um, because there is a like a historical like representation bit to it that they don't really ever go into.

SPEAKER_02

Um cool. I love that so much.

SPEAKER_00

So cool. Um, and then that takes us back to the temple for our next contest, which is Son of Havoc taking on Sexy Star. Son of Havoc, we will see more. Um, he's from the open road, uh stocky white guy, big long beard, black mask. Um, and then his opponent, uh, we get a video package introducing Sexy Star, and it's fantastic. It's amazing. Um, she's basically just like uh when I looked in the mirror, I used to see like a woman afraid. Like I come from like a history of abuse. Um, I like essentially essentially like she takes up um the mantle for like women. She tries to take up the mantle for women um so that they have somebody to look up to so that they don't have to feel like they uh have to live in fear, that sort of stuff. And it was really beautiful, it was really beautiful, and like she's like English is not her like first language, she did it amazingly, like it she really relayed the character that she's like trying to portray. Uh, it was it was good, it was all around great. Um, she's like her immediately.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, I love her.

SPEAKER_00

No, oh, fantastic. Um, so she comes out. Um, and I love uh Vampire on commentary. He's just like, she's going to kick his ass. Like, this is great. She is a warrior, she fights everyone. She like he was just literally like no one has come on, Diva, beat him up. 1000%. Um, Son of Havoc uh basically goes, Um, I'm not gonna fight a woman, so why don't you just go take yourself, go get yourself counted out, and go live to like fight another day. And she's like, Okay, sure. And then she goes out, the ref starts counting, waits for him to turn around, immediately gets back in the ring, jumps his ass from behind, and kick starts the match. Fantastic queen shit. No, it was great, it was a great showing on her part, lots of aggression, lot. It was, you know. Um, again, it was we're in the introductory of all of these characters. We're really gonna see them come out of their shells a little bit um as we go along. Um, uh, Son of Havoc picks up the victory with this crazy uh backbreaker. Yeah, she's done.

SPEAKER_02

It was wild.

SPEAKER_00

Um, but that is not the last we have seen of either. And I love it. Um, we're gonna any thoughts?

SPEAKER_02

I just love her so much. I think the fastest way to become a heel for me is to say I'm not gonna play women.

SPEAKER_00

So immediately I was like, get his ass.

SPEAKER_02

I hate him. Like whatever.

SPEAKER_00

You uh Vampiro was literally just like shouting your thoughts.

SPEAKER_02

Again, I every time Vampiro said anything, I was like, okay, sweet. I was like, stop. Yeah, I mean, it was really great. I mean, she is crazy, she is a freak, she's so good, athletic, she has. Like great timing, she her character is so interesting, her hair is incredible. Like, I just I'm a big fan, and he did a great job of being a dick because I hated him.

SPEAKER_00

So, right, perfect. Um, and then that takes us into a backstage segment. Um, where Chavo is backstage down on his luck, and Dario decides, like, now is the time for the flagellation. He says, he said, so like uh well, he's like, What happened, Chavo? The like famous Guerrero. I thought you were gonna like put put an end to the blue demon, like pick up the like hundred thousand dollars. Like, what would your grandfather say? What would your uncle Eddie Guerrero say? Um, not I was like, Woo, not invoking the uncle, that's crazy.

SPEAKER_02

Never do that.

SPEAKER_00

Um and then he's basically just like, Well, since you couldn't get the job done, I'm gonna have to be forced to bring somebody in who can. And unfortunately for all of us, once he's here, I can't control it. And I was like, So then why are you why are we bringing him? I was like, wait, wait, you still like nothing has happened yet.

SPEAKER_02

There's a lot of steps that can happen. That's like this reminds me.

SPEAKER_00

Make other decisions.

SPEAKER_02

There's this, there was this tweet a million years ago where it was like, this girl was like, if you want to know who your real friends are, get pregnant. And some guy responded and said, I feel like there's so many other things you could do before you could do that, like, but to figure out like I just don't think that has crazy.

SPEAKER_00

No 100%.

SPEAKER_02

That's literally what happened.

SPEAKER_00

Oh um, uh, but we're like, okay. Um, but then that takes us into our main event, which is Johnny Mundo taking on Prince Puma. And honestly, I stopped taking notes at this point because it was just so freaking good. God, it was amazing. Their chemistry is off the charts. Um, Johnny Mundo is like this parkour freak with like 10 abs. Um, like abs on abs. 100% is also ridiculously athletic. Um doing Power Ranger shit, basically. Power Ranger shit. It was bonkers. Um, it was so fast, the timing was amazing, the chain wrestling was great. Oh, it was back and forth. You really didn't know who was gonna pick up the victory. Um, the commentary team was absolutely eating. The crowd fell in love with Prince Puma. Like, it was a win all around.

SPEAKER_02

I have no, I also have no notes. I was like, this is just I literally just wrote, girl, what's happening?

SPEAKER_00

No, literally, they're fighting on the the announce table, which I love because of the little camera. Um, so good. Then the match ends with um Johnny. I think they call it the end of the world, um Elfin de Mundo, and like that's in WWE was called Starship Pain, which is insane. Um, but it is that split-legged corkscrew moonsault that um Johnny Mundo does as his finisher. What the fuck? Crazy. Hey, what? Hey, what?

SPEAKER_02

Because when he first did the attempt, he landed on his legs, and it reminded it gave me very much Rob Van Dam.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_02

And I was like, sure. And then when he actually did it, and I was like, no, one 100%.

SPEAKER_00

It's okay.

SPEAKER_02

So crazy, so crazy. So grateful. So grateful. So grateful to have seen it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we're gonna see we're gonna see it a bunch. Um uh because Johnny Mudo was here to stay.

SPEAKER_02

But and that fit goes crazy. That big old coat, smash the pants, smash the cuffs, man. Let me tell you, everyone's outfit was right and tight. Right, right and tight. I want no no seriously. Also, I want to mention the ring is fierce. That like kind of old timey parchment looking thing, and then the the medallion in the middle.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So good. Beautiful and that and that over that like wily coyote, like over the shot kit, over the ring kit. So good, so good.

SPEAKER_02

And this is their first episode, so I'm hooked.

SPEAKER_00

Hooked. I know. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

I I'm I'm so excited. I can't wait for the stairs to come into play. I can't wait. Like, I love the stair entrance, that's so brilliant, like that's so fun.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, dude. It's fantastic.

SPEAKER_02

Stairs, concrete, no railing. I know that shit's gonna be a problem soon.

SPEAKER_00

For sure.

SPEAKER_02

I know that's about to be a problem for some people.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Prince Poom was like notably upset. Like after the match, Johnny Mundo picks him up, they have a handshake, a show of respect. Love to see it. Um, except Dario wants absolutely no part in that. Um, a bunch of goons show up, beat up everybody, um, and then the biggest, thickest dude you've ever seen comes in, chokes lands, Johnny Mundo. A vicious vicious. 100%. Dario, like literally, he's like, Um, turns out nobody gets the money, and these guys work for me. Ha ha ha ha. And that's how we end the show.

SPEAKER_02

He's like, just kidding, this was all a silly little joke, and this guy works for me. So I'll see you guys right here next week. Really well. 1000%. That guy was built like a brick shit house, huge brick. Brick shit house. I think he's heavy.

SPEAKER_00

I believe uh in WWE. Um, this is like 2006, 2007. If you remember the um very short-lived ECW, like revival. I think his name in on during that was Ezekiel. I don't remember what his name is or what his name is going to be here. Yeah, yeah. Um, in in Lucha Underground. Um, but yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Those little minions for one second gave me kaient tie, and I was like, what are you doing here?

SPEAKER_00

And I was like, Yeah, it was like kaient, but like also like ex the boricwas.

SPEAKER_02

Period. It was the crossover, the crossover no one asked for, didn't want, and do not require. Thank you.

SPEAKER_00

Right, right, 1000%. Whoa, dude, but yeah, fierce, absolutely fierce.

SPEAKER_02

I love the opening of like to do a whole circle back, but like the opening of just like the guy, like they're just fighting in a warehouse, and then the guy's like, There's a better way, brother. We come from like we don't have to just fight in the streets, we come from a lineage of warriors, and you need to tap into that and be like the baddest bitch you can be. And he was like, sign me up, sure, right? Cool, I'm in. I was like, sure, hell yeah. Hell yeah, so fierce. I love this. The budget goes crazy. The dramatic, the the dude, you have no idea.

SPEAKER_00

Just wait.

SPEAKER_02

I can't wait. Between Conan and Dario in the office, I was like, This is again, I feel like this is like on a TV show. Well, it is obviously, but like on like a scripted prime time on CBS. Like, that's really what it was giving. It was so good. I'm so excited.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, this is where they leave us guys. Um, so hopefully, you guys enjoyed our little uh female wrestlers uh lucha underground. Yeah, we're gonna see some real intergender wrestling. That's another reason why we get to like what this is a fun one to watch because one, it's a bunch of like wrestlers who still wrestle today. Um, so we can talk about that. Um, and there's intergender wrestling, there it's that lucha style that you like, and it's just the backstage segments are so drama, so drama.

SPEAKER_02

And you know that's why I'm here. Harking back to our very first episode ever at the Nuda Wrestling podcast. I said it's the drama for me.

SPEAKER_00

No, 100%, nothing's changed.

SPEAKER_02

Women wrestlers, and they're not taking their gloves off. This is so exciting!

SPEAKER_00

Oh girl, I know. I know so, all right, guys. Stay tuned. This has been another edition of the Nuder Wrestling Podcast. Um, thank you for watching, listening, subscribing, all that fun stuff. If you are hooked and want to see more of Kelsey's uh and myself's foray into Lucha Underground or our our normal uh trek into the the wide, wide world of 1998 WWF. Or if you're just here for our indie wrestling interviews, because we've had uh we've had a couple great ones recently. We've got some to look forward to this summer. Thank you guys for Kelsey. I'm Xavier. We'll catch you on the next one.

SPEAKER_02

We'll see you there.

SPEAKER_00

SPEAKER_02

Bye
