In this episode, I dive into the will center in Human Design (also known as the Heart or Ego Center) and explore how it shapes willpower, self-worth, leadership, and the way money moves through your business.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why some people feel steady commitment while others need more space before saying yes
  • How having a defined will can amplify a room and why that hype fades afterward
  • Why rest and play are non-negotiable
  • How to make clean agreements without burnout
  • The connection between self-worth and money

We also explore the subtle ways being misaligned in your will center feels like proving energy, overcommits, or tries to “keep up,” and how being aligned in your will center has you feeling worthy, generous, and at ease.

Setting The Frame For Will Center

Erin Gray

Welcome back to Your Money, Your Rules podcast with me, your host, Erin Gray. Today I want to talk about the Will Center in Human Design. Specifically, if you are whether you're defined or undefined, I'm going to go over that as well as how this applies to yourself, just in general, your business, the people in your team, and how you lead. So let's dive in.

Human Design Context And Caveats

Erin Gray

If you are new to human design, I want to advise you to go back and listen to a couple of my episodes first. Because what I'm talking about here is for people that are more so either have heard of human design, have already have their chart, they're a little bit versed in it. So you, I will put some links in the show notes to go back and watch or learn a couple of things with human design so you can kind of get an idea. Because number one, here's the other thing about human design. It's just like for me, I always use this with my clients, but very loosely because I don't think human design is the end-all be-all. I think human design is something that I use to just reconfirm what my clients already know. And so as they're like having their training wheels and they're like coming back home to themselves and trusting themselves more, I just give them some things to have more so of like that external validation of things that they already know to like give them some like add a girls of like, yeah, I already know this, right? Like that feels true in the body. So I don't look at human design from a place of this is the Bible and this is the way it has to be. I just use it as a form to support my clients, help them understand their team better and as well as themselves and like how to run their business.

What The Will Center Is

Erin Gray

So in human design, it might be called the will center, or it could be called the heart, or it could be called the ego center. And so there are basically four gates that come off of this center. So I'm gonna give some just generalities and then I'm gonna talk about being defined and undefined, and then how it actually pertains to money and also running your team. So this is a motor center. It is not a center which, in terms of a motor, it kind of comes on and it goes off. It like pulses, right? So this is more so the center for willpower and like bringing things forth on the material plane. And again, sometimes I feel like human design, people take it like to the nth degree. Like we all have, whether you have a defined or an undefined will center, you can all bring things forth on the material plane. This is the center that is more so around like self-worth and self-esteem and our value. And I think that this center can have a very much so like can right have masculine energy. I think a lot of times of like the way that business has been done up until now, it's like a push, you know, use your willpower, like muscle through it kind of energy. And I don't necessarily think that that is a healthy way. And I don't think that a lot of us actually thrive in doing it that way. So this center does have a lot of power. So honor it because it kind of pulses on and off, you know, you have to think about like how am I working, how am I playing and resting? Like you have to have this back and forth. It can't just like if you're always on, you're always connected, you're always pushing, and because it's such a powerful center, you will burn yourself out, regardless of if you're defined or

Defined Will: Power And Rest

Erin Gray

undefined. So, this center, if you have a defined will center, it's going to be colored in in your chart. And basically on the body graph, if you're looking at it, it's going to be kind of like that tiny, it should be labeled for you, but it's the tiny little center on the right hand side in between your identity or your G center, and I was gonna say north of your solar plexus, but above your solar plexus. So it's a little triangle and it should be named will or identity or ego center. About roughly 37-ish percent of the population has a defined, it's gonna be colored in. If your will center is defined, it will be colored in. If you're undefined, it will not be colored in. So these are people that have probably more consistent access to, when I say willpower, I don't mean pushing against what you want to do. I just mean that more steady energy of like when you decide to do something, you've got like the will to carry it through. So I want you to remember if you have a defined will center, you are designed to work and to rest and to play. If you do not rest, ultimately you will burn yourself out. So think about how important play is, how important rest is, taking naps, how whatever rest might look like for you, of allowing yourself this pendulum swing back and forth of I work and then I rest.

Leadership Impact On Teams

Erin Gray

I want to say here from a leadership and a team perspective, if you have a defined will center and other people that are in your org space have an undefined will center, they might feel really motivated when they are around you. So let's say if you're having a team meeting and you have a uh defined will center and you're talking to your team and they're like, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, it's almost kind of like, yes, let's all do it. Okay, we're ready. Yes, let's go. While they're in your energy, feel that way. But then as they get out of your energy, that energy might actually wane, and that is normal. So you want to be really mindful because a lot of times people with an undefined will center are kind of feeding off of your defined energy and you may not even know it, right? So they might seem like, yes, I'm ready, let's go do the thing, and then their enthusiasm wanes. And it isn't because they don't want to, it's just because they were kind of feeding off of that energy that you have. So, something else that I want to say is if you do have a defined will center, keeping commitments to yourself, and I think that this is true whether you have a defined or an undefined will center, it's really important because you do have the willpower to carry it through. And also of like, I think when we keep commitments to ourselves, here you go back to self-concept and your identity. Someone that keeps commitments to themselves over something that's small, you are building up the evidence, you know, keep commitments to yourself in something big, right? So I always look at this from like when you set goals or intentions or things of that sort. When you are always, you know, doing what you need to do from a little perspective, like, hey, I said I

Keeping Commitments And Identity

Erin Gray

was gonna sit down with the money and take a look at it, and you do that on a consistent basis. When you start wanting to do bigger things, the brain will see, oh yeah, I already do this, right? Like it's who I am. What I say I'm gonna do is what I do. Okay, so if you have an undefined will center, this is roughly 63-ish percent of the population. Obviously, this changes, you know, people born and people pass away. But it's really important that you use your strategy when making agreements. Because when you enter into the agreements, you will have the energy to carry it through. If you are just going off of, let's just say, somebody else's org energy, right? Like if you have an undefined will center and you are trying to, you're saying yes and you're, you know, on the high, but you haven't ridden your wave, when you actually get

Undefined Will: Agreements And Waves

Erin Gray

to a neutrality, you may not have the energy or the desire to carry it through because you didn't actually allow yourself to get to neutrality. So really start to think about if you have an undefined will center and you have a defined solar plexus, are you honoring yourself and allowing enough time to ride your wave to really see is this something that I actually want to do? I want you to also say is regardless, make sure that you are valuing yourself. We're all valuable because we are here on planet Earth. Not because of what we do, not because of our revenue, not because of what our profit is, not because of you know what our team thinks of us. We're here because we exist, that we are valuable, right? So we don't have to prove there's nothing that we need to like earn, although a lot of us have been taught that. We need to honor our rest, we need to honor the ebbs and flows of our energy. And I think it would be good if you are open to like journaling, like noticing when is your energy higher, when is your energy lower? And like, are you trying to push through when you have lower energy or are you allowing yourself to rest? So you also want to make sure, like I said, with those of us that have a defined will center, if you have an undefined will center and you have some employees that have some defined will centers,

Worth Without Proving

Erin Gray

you want to be really mindful of when you are saying yes to them or you are agreeing to something or, you know, because if you are in the energy of someone that is defined, you hear you go back to, you might be feeding off of their energy. I remember I had a coach and she had a defined will center. And so when we would meet, you know, she and I would talk about certain things and I'd be like, yes, that's good. And you know, like in the meeting, I would be like all pumped up. I mean, it makes me think of like the Tony Robbins or, you know, like those, those types of events where everybody's like rah, rah, rah, right. But then when I would get out of her energy, it would kind of the my energy would kind of wane a little bit. And I always had to come back to, was I working off of her energy, or was this actually mine and what I wanted to do? So always check in with yourself. Am I, you know, is this energy mine? That's the question I ask all the time. Is what I'm feeling right now, is that energy mine? Am I trying to prove something here? Am I trying to prove my worth? Am I trying to prove my value, my experience, or anything of that sort? Like just notice where that comes. If you're experiencing it, you will know by how you feel in

Money, Alignment, And “Joneses”

Erin Gray

your body. Okay, so let's talk about how the will center pertains to money. When you are aligned, meaning when you are allowing the energy to flow the way it's meant to flow, you're gonna feel generous, you're gonna feel deserving and worthy. You're going to have something just because you want it, not because you have to like you earned it or you worked hard for it or, you know, any of that proving energy. When you are not aligned in your will center, it's gonna be a lot of proving energy. You're gonna have to you feel like you're proving that you're worthy, or like when I say keeping up with the Joneses, I don't necessarily mean from a personal standpoint, although it could be that way. What I also think about like is like trying to be your business, be like somebody else's, or have the revenue of someone else that you know, or like grow at the at the rate that someone else is trying to grow at, or whatever it might be. So really think about like, am I trying to keep up with the Joneses with anyone in business, or am I just doing it my way? What feels good to me in my body? And then questions that you can ask yourself to gain more clarity is am I improving energy? And I always say this is like you have to go back and take it to your body. You will know because it won't feel calm, it won't feel neutral, it won't feel like at ease. It's gonna feel like this leaning, like in my body, it feels like this leaning energy. Like, let me give you a little bit more, let me show you, like, let me try to prove that I know what I'm talking about, or you know, that so really, really ask yourself like, am I improving energy?

Play As A Business Strategy

Erin Gray

And another question is, do I really truly want what I am going after? Like, is this a true heart's desire? And one of the ways that I always cut through the BS and I find out real quick is like, if I had a hundred million dollars, would I still want to do this? Like that for me is such an easy way to just get into my body, bypass the mind, and be like, yeah, I would totally do it, you know? Or is this something like my ego or my will center is at play here, right? Like, is this a I want this here? Go back to like, I want my business to be at X because so and so is at X. It's like, why do you want to be there? Like you really have to sit down and be like, okay, well, what would that entail? What are the numbers? Are you happy where you are? Like, I think also in the business world, we think like we have to be growing, growing, growing all the time. It's like the only thing that grows all the time and never stops is like cancer. Nature rests, nature has seasons, nature knows how to ebb and flow, and it is so efficient. So let nature be one of our teachers and let's ask ourselves like, are we trying to keep up with somebody else? Because we think, right? We have to be really clear on where is this coming from? And I would also ask myself, what am I doing daily? Daily, I said daily on purpose, daily for play to keep it light and to keep it fun. And I am like, I will call myself out here. I recognize where I can go into seriousness and the pressure, right? Versus like, no, like I wrote down last night or the day before. I'm like, my business is so fun. That's not how I used to think about my business or business in general, right? Like it was very serious, money was very serious, versus like, am I doing what I need to do to play and have fun? I know that I need to move my body before I sit down and work. Like that feels good to me. So what are you doing for play? And play can look in any way, right? Play can look like I'm gonna go for a walk in nature. Play can be like, I'm gonna go ride my bike, play can be like, I'm gonna go sit at a coffee shop and I'm gonna, you know, maybe write out my podcast episodes or look at some clients', you know, financials and stuff like that. What are you doing that feels fun and enjoyable and not something that you have to earn,

Charts, Resources, And Empowerment

Erin Gray

not where you have to go sit and do work and then go play. Like what we're trying to teach the body too is we get to go play just because we want to. Because when I play, all of my ideas come through. All I get a lot of downloads. Like, I don't feel like I have to earn, which I think a lot of us have had to earn grades when we were younger to go play. We had to do what we needed to do. Maybe we had to practice piano or we had to like clean our room before we got to go play. It's all of this, like you do this and then you get that. And I want you to really start thinking about how do I just play? Because that is something that is loving to myself and to my nervous system and to my body. And the more I play, the more I have fun, the more I take care of me, the more everything else follows and increases and flows because of that. Okay, take some of these questions, think about them, contemplate them, journal. Go pull your human design chart on my website, generatelifewell live.com, click on human design chart, and you can grab your chart and you can see, you know, what does your human design chart look like? Are you defined or undefined? So that you can really start to support yourself. I'll also provide a couple of links in the show notes for you to go watch a couple of videos and understand human design. And there's always, you know, YouTube. Um, but just be really mindful that I like to use human design from an empowered place. I think a lot of teachers look at it from a very disempowered place. So just use that filter when you're gonna go watch and things of that sort. Okay. I will see you in the next episode.
