First Rikki, welcome to Ready Set Reiki. Thank you?

Speaker 2:

You did what so many people do. Is you called me Reiki Friedman? You probably didn't even catch that. Everybody gets all tongue-tied with the Reiki Reiki, so I actually created a jingle about that at one point. Oh wonderful, but it also helps me know that my name was a wake up call to my purpose and I'm exactly where I need to be.

Speaker 1:

Very good, very good. So let's begin our journey together. So tell me a little bit about yourself.

Speaker 2:

Well, I was born and raised in Philadelphia, pennsylvania. I've been in Pennsylvania all my life, spent about 20 years or so in Lewisburg, pennsylvania, which is a small, rural, conservative college town and you'll hear more about that later. But that's where I learned Reiki and started integrating it with my physical therapy work and I moved to Harrisburg definitely clearly intuitively guided move in 2008 and created and opened Harrisburg's first Reiki center Reiki by Reiki Reiki space and learning place April 1st 2013, and we're still going strong. So it's an awesome, amazing journey. I adopted two boys 11 weeks apart, so I had a four-day-old and an 11-week-old at the same time, and the little bit older boy, ryan, actually passed when he was 20. So he's one of my helpers and guides through all this now, especially with my writing, and my other son is 39. And he lives in the Lewisburg area where I moved here from.

Speaker 1:

So I'm so sorry for your loss.

Speaker 2:

Thank you, I appreciate that, and that was. That's a whole nother story, of course, oh my goodness, oh my goodness, oh, my goodness.

Speaker 1:

So let's talk about Reiki. So when did it come into your life? Did you find Reiki or did Reiki find you?

Speaker 2:

So I love my story about that. So I was living in Lewisburg at the time and there was no Reiki in Lewisburg. Nobody even heard of it then, and this was back in about 1994. And so I've been doing this for a long time. So what happened was friends of mine who were physical therapists and occupational therapists husband and wife, took a Reiki class that was at a local physical therapy office and they asked me to babysit for their son. I never heard of Reiki. I was at a local physical therapy office and they asked me to babysit for their son. I never heard of Reiki. I was just doing them a favor. And then they came home and they practiced on me and I had a really intense emotional experience.

Speaker 2:

I was going through a very personal, challenging emotional time. So it stirred my stuff up and so I could tell something very profound was happening and I decided to take my first Reiki One class from that same woman who actually came from New York to teach and to start my own personal healing journey. And so it really started for me and my inner work and, being a nurturer, caregiver personality, I was very quickly drawn along to share it. But I definitely took my time along the path taking the classes probably, you know, four years or so, so that I could work with each level and, honestly, I thought every level of class I took would be as far as I would need to go, because I felt it so much and it was, so you know, so influential in my life, you know, and at that point I was still doing full-time physical therapy and I was able to integrate the Reiki into the physical therapy until I started blossoming more into my own personal Reiki practice, and so I did both for many years.

Speaker 2:

And although I have been full-time Reiki since 2008, when I moved to Harrisburg, here Again very clearly guided, this is what I need to do now. Yeah, my PT background still serves me extremely well in my work. First of all, I have a wonderful knowledge and wisdom of the body, but also that left brain. Logical traditional training that I had allows me to integrate seamlessly in traditional healthcare. So I work with a lot of doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals and professionals in general, because I'm able to explain this in a way that is grounded and relatable. So I'm not just talking to other holistic healers, I'm out in the community, bringing this to traditional businesses and government offices and you know and such, and I love that because everybody needs this right, especially now.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, absolutely. What system of Reiki did you study?

Speaker 2:

Yes, I studied Usui Reiki and, as many people tend to do, I started to take a class here or there of some other forms of Reiki. I became a magnified healing master. I studied Reiki, tumo Seikim Seikim Reiki and one day I was in my Reiki room in Lewisburg and all of a sudden, like a lightning bolt message in my head, just said loud as loud can be, stop louder than that. And they said this is what you're meant to share. This is what you're meant to share, this is what you're meant to teach. Focus on this.

Speaker 2:

And, of course, I've learned things, you know, from many other traditions that I weave into what we call Reiki by Reiki, because it's all part of me and what I bring to it. But the essence of everything I share and teach is Usui Reiki and I it, and I think it's a great place for people to start their journey from and then decide what's right for them. Because, you know, I have a saying that I'm kind of known for in Reiki space here and it's the source. Is the source, of course? Of course, right, it's all the same. You just find the way in that you resonate with Beautiful. I love, yeah, wonderful.

Speaker 1:

So, as you've been out navigating, working with so many people, and out with this beautiful energy that you work with, what are some of the common misconceptions about Reiki?

Speaker 2:

Oh my gosh, it's a never-ending job of education and dispelling misnotions and such. So I would say first of all and a lot of Reiki healers need to be reminded of this Reiki is much more than just a hands-on healing session. It becomes a way to live and be in the world, conscious of your energy, and I think that's really important. This is not something that we do, this is something that we are right. And also, there's still a lot of misperceptions around Reiki and religion. Of course, you know, as you know, tracy, there's nothing, there's no religious formal dogma about Reiki, sharing it, receiving it. For many, it becomes a spiritually guided path for whatever that means to each individual person. But you know that is also another topic that I need, I think, needs, to be brought out into the forefront more. So you know I have lots of strong feelings about that just amazing.

Speaker 1:

And then, you know, even I had it as myself as I began my journey, because I was told about this many, many years before and I'm like I'm not sure, but it took until going and having a training to really see what it was all about. Right, right.

Speaker 2:

And having your personal experience, because I can talk about this all day long but until you get on the table and you feel that energy which becomes undeniably real, whether you can explain it or not, that's how you know Reiki.

Speaker 1:

Beautiful, beautiful. So you have helped many people on their journey, through their challenges or struggles. What has been the biggest challenge or struggle you have faced in your own healing journey?

Speaker 2:

well, of course, when my son passed, I was already Reiki, thank God at that time, and you know I was very much in a very deep grieving process and Reiki was the bulk of my work by that point in my life. So I had another son and I needed to get back to work before I was fully. You know, working through this because you know that's a process, it takes time. The beauty of living in a small town is I was very, very connected with all my clients. They all knew my story. So I was able to be very real and I remember many sessions sitting at people's heads with, you know, tears flowing down my foot, my own face, as the Reiki is flowing through me, as I share with them. And you know, I just envisioned myself being healed deeper and deeper every time, and this is in my book that we'll talk about later.

Speaker 2:

But I remember so distinctly the first time going back to my Reiki room there and stepping over the threshold into the healing space. Those Reiki healing principles literally came right to my face and spoke to me and I don't know how else to say it. That's how real it was. And they said are these just words or are you going to really choose to live by this now. So I knew that I had. It was a choice point for me to. Am I going to allow myself to live as a victim, because other people would support that, as someone who has lost a child right, or am I going to move forward as a healing presence? So I knew I had to do my own work and then, you know, other people could benefit from my experience and I actually share a workshop now called From Grief to Gratitude, which has been really impactful for for other people, because we all go through this journey. Yeah, we all have similar. You know similar points in our life. You know different details, but we can help each other.

Speaker 1:

Right, beautiful, beautiful. What a beautiful thing that you did is. You had an experience of grief and then, through that, you were able to build this to help and serve others and many people. That's another misconception, that they just think that this is going out right. But we always need to share this work in a filled-up place, right, right, right. And especially like students, that will say, okay, well, how long is the training? And I have this planned afterwards or I'm going to go to this market afterwards. I'm like you might want to lighten that load Right.

Speaker 2:

It takes time for this work to process and integrate, and you need to do your own work every step of the way. The training might be a day, but then you have your daily work. I have affectionately named this your Reiki-robics right.

Speaker 2:

Our daily work that we need to do with our self-healing, our focus on those reiki healing principles, our grounding practices right, yes, and our practice building and radiating our light so that people can feel that and be attracted to it sure, sure, sure and I I've studied different systems and, uh, the first system I ever uh learned was the rahi, and in that system you didn't get your certificate until you did self Reiki for 21 days.

Speaker 1:

And after your 21 days you went back to the teacher to talk about it and get your certificate versus other systems out there. You know you finish the end of the day training and there you go.

Speaker 2:

You know you finish the end of the day, training and there you go. So interesting that you bring that up because I just yesterday created forms that I'm going to share after each level and they're going to fill out. So the so after the first level will be those 21 days of self healing.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2:

What did you feel before, what did you feel after?

Speaker 1:

And I want to have them, you know, fill out that form, yeah yeah you know working, you know through the different levels of sharing Reiki, receiving Reiki session yeah, right, yeah, we had homework and and as I went to other different systems holy fire, corona, that that wasn't a part of that. I mean, it was encouraged to get a Reiki buddy practice, things like that, but there wasn't. You got your certificate after you finished the training and there wasn't that 21 days. But there was mention of you know honoring the 21 days and doing that, but that wasn't part of the criteria.

Speaker 2:

You know I'm not what I call a fast food Reiki person, right? So I you know I require people to wait at least three weeks between Reiki 1 and Reiki 2, where they're doing self-healing every day, and now they're going to prove that to me, right? Yeah, yeah, I usually have people wait, you know, a good six months, uh, you six to nine months for between Reiki two and beginning that master level. And I have some prerequisites for the master level training because I take that seriously.

Speaker 2:

I have a lighthearted style with my sharing, but you know, I think that's a big commitment when you step forwards, to be the example of living energetically in the world, being conscious of all your thoughts, words, emotions and attitudes, not just when you're in your Reiki space, but everywhere in your life and on social media, and on and on.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, Very good. So, when it is time for you to get an energetic tune up, what are some qualities that you look for in a Reiki practitioner?

Speaker 2:

Oh well, that is great. So I have an advantage because of managing the Reiki center. I have about a dozen Reiki space practitioners that have all received Reiki with me, at least level two and higher. So we are all you sharing a you know, a common philosophy and attitude. So I trade with a practitioner every month so I make sure I get on the table at least monthly. But when I, you know, talk to other people about finding a practitioner, I always say that it's not about the number of pieces of paper hanging on someone's wall, you know, it's about, you know, are they living this work? And that I'd rather be with a heart-centered Reiki one practitioner who is walking the walk than somebody who is just talking the talk. Right? Right right.

Speaker 2:

So you know there's more to this than just the trainings right and getting the pieces of paper.

Speaker 1:

This is a conscious choice sure yeah, I think that's really important yeah, there's some people that they are concerned with the number how long? But when you think about it, how long did azui do this? Not very long before his passing. And look at what he contributed to this.

Speaker 2:

That's right. That's right. I mean, it is very individualized and you know, for example, if someone who takes my Reiki 2 class comes to me after three months and says I'm ready, I will believe them, and then I share the prerequisites. So you know, that shows that they are dedicated and committed, that they're willing to do this work, and then we move forward from there.

Speaker 1:

Right. Right, I know when I started my teachers there was a team teaching that was. So I had two teachers when I began my journey and they had an outline and a criteria and a certain you have to do it this amount of months and do this amount of months. And then I came in and it was this shifting that I was progressing so quickly. And I remember my teacher saying we need to level you up because they knew I was coming to El Paso. They were like we have. They just felt that this was the exception, because I felt, wow, this is, I was ready and going. And then they changed how they looked at it. Instead of, well, we won't be gatekeeper to say this, we'll look at the individual students.

Speaker 2:

Which is what Mikhail Osui did also. He right you know, based on you know, are you ready?

Speaker 1:

so yes yeah, yes yeah, so that's where it was kind of interesting, where it shifted with that.

Speaker 2:

So uh, working with so many uh students. What advice? You know that's a very beautiful, heart centered invention, but you know that they need to take care of themselves and fill themselves up first, because if they're not doing the work right, then that energy flows right through you and you never become drained and you never take on anyone else's stuff. You might get information, but you're not holding on to stuff that's not yours to hold, right, and many people are attracted to this work because they are very sensitive and empathic, right. So this becomes a way to learn to stay very heart-centered and connected, which is really important. But learn how to manage your energy in the world, and you know that is a life-changing tool in your toolbox, right? That's why. That is why I teach this to kids, because if kids can learn how to manage their energy before they get to our age, right and aware of this right it's going to change the world, and you know, one at a time.

Speaker 2:

That's all we can do, so could do beautiful, beautiful.

Speaker 1:

So what books do you recommend?

Speaker 2:

Well, I suppose this isn't the time that you're asking me to show my books.

Speaker 1:

I've had people. That's all they'll show.

Speaker 2:

They're like these books right here, so you go ahead well, I will do that, but you know, some of the books that I that have been personally meaningful to me are not Reiki books. Yes, louise Hay, you can heal your life. You know the importance of being able to look in your own mirror and say I love you, and how to create and use affirmations in your life. I think that is a great start for anybody starting their self-healing journey. So name, so yeah, there's been several others, I mean the.

Speaker 2:

Four Agreements is one that you come back to over and over again, and there's some wonderful Reiki books out there as well. You know I always say that I tease my students that even if they threw my manual out their car window on their way home, once they have their attunement and they're doing their own Reiki, they're going to learn more from their Reiki than any book teacher or person can share right.

Speaker 2:

Because we are all guided in our work. So, that being said, let me show my two books. So this book and I know some of you are listening and not seeing this, but this is my Reiki Riki Shares, Reiki Kids book and this is a manual for the kids. So they get to have this manual in their class and it is the entire Reiki class, the same information the adults get, but in child-friendly language. So let me just, for those of you who can see, I'll just open to a picture or two here.

Speaker 2:

I love can you see that I love this one of Makaya Usui, up on the mountain and we tell the whole story with the 21 days and such. I finished this book during COVID and this was definitely guided by my son. In fact, on the back here, my hair was a little different then. This was Ryan's stuffed dog from when he was a child. Wow, puppy named old, wow puppy named fluffy puppy still helps me teach every reiki to class. So this is um, this is a teenage version of me reiki riki and all the kids get their own baby reiki fluffy puppy, so fluffy puppy's part of the story too. And plus, they're all blessed with reiki, so they feel very cozy and they can use this when they want to share Reiki with grandma who's not with them, or you know. Whatever the case may be, so I am extremely proud of this.

Speaker 2:

I also do a virtual workshop for any parents, teachers, other Reiki professionals and we go through this page by page by page, if you would like to learn how to share Reiki with kids in a way that's meaningful to them. I teach from five years old and up. Okay, very good.

Speaker 2:

My other book just came out, 11-11 last year. It's called Radiating Our Reiki Light. It's probably backwards for you, but it's Reiki healing through real stories from clients, students, practitioners and teachers. So what I did was I gathered other people's stories from all over the country, and there's even one from Canada, so they're not all my students and clients, although several of them are in here. They're not necessarily professional writers, but they are sharing their heartfelt stories and testimonials about how Reiki has saved or changed their lives.

Speaker 2:

So when we got all the stories in then I divided them into chapters, and there's 17 chapters Reiki and fertility, reiki and grief, Reiki and animals first experiences, on and on and on, and in the beginning of each of those 17 chapters I share some of my story, but also my philosophies and my teaching, and one of the reasons why I love doing these podcasts, as well as sharing the word of Reiki and educating, is I really want to get this book out to the world. Right? You know there's a lot of books about Reiki on Amazon and many of them are written by Reiki masters and they're awesome. Each one brings their own philosophy, but this is written by everyday people that everyone can relate to and resonate with. So it's a little bit, I think, a little bit unique.

Speaker 1:

Right, right, and even putting about the infertility as well, because some people don't even make that connection. That it can be used because they just think, oh you know when you need, when you're sick or something like that, just to go, and they don't realize it can be used on animals and when you have these types of issues, anything really, I mean everything.

Speaker 2:

Reiki just helps balance your whole system so that your body can help you, and you know there's been. You know what other people call miracles and to me what that is is that somebody is finally getting the healing that on the level that they need. Western culture, you know traditional medicine is not used to paying attention to the energetic level and you know that underlying mental, emotional stress level source of much of the physical, and so they come to Reiki and they go to those deeper underlying levels and things start to shift and that feels like a miracle. Beautiful, beautiful.

Speaker 1:

So what other services or modalities do you offer?

Speaker 2:

oh, my goodness. Well, I you mentioned I am um certified in reiki sound, so I have all the lovely singing bowls that you know for each of the energy centers, and rain sticks and drums and such. However, I'm very clear that people need to know what is the pure Reiki and then we can blend in some of these other things. I'm certified as a Reiki voice instructor, which I'll be happy to tell you more about that, so I can blend in the singing, toning, humming, chanting, the vibrational aspect of the voice with the Reiki work. And because I'm a physical therapist by background, I can do some of those other things that you shared Indian head massage I actually created the one that you mentioned.

Speaker 2:

Chakra foot massage, which works very gently on the reflex zones of the feet that correspond to all the energy centers of the body. Right, you know I can share intuitive guidance and I have. You know, and I'm also very clear again, that the Reiki will bring to each person exactly what they need to know. But many people ask and if they ask and if my intuition tells me that it is for their highest good and further healing, then I will share that and I call that intuitive personal growth guidance. I created that name before I became a certified holistic wellness practitioner, which I also finished over COVID, and that work basically supports more of the mentoring that I do working with other Reiki practitioners and holistic healers when they're ready to go what I say from passion to profession. You know how to use the energetic principles that underlie everything that we attract in a way that's going to help grow and attract what you desire. Beautiful, beautiful yeah.

Speaker 2:

So I, you know I have a very full-time practice. As well as managing the center, I mean, I see probably five clients most days of the week and share workshops and create classes and on and on. So I'm a busy girl but I love it so much and I there's more, there's more coming.

Speaker 1:

So where can we find you if we want to book a class session training?

Speaker 2:

Oh, okay, thank you, so I'm very communicative. So I do have a website, which is reiki by reikicom, and I'm on Facebook as Reikimeryl Friedman. I have also a Reiki by Riki page, but the personal page seems to get the most action, so that's where I am more of the time. You can reach me through email, riki at reikibyrikicom, and I'm sure all that will be written with what you share, tracy, so you don't have to memorize that. You know I do share distance work as well, both for people as well as for pets, so if somebody is not local to the Harrisburg area, we can talk about those needs and what that entails. One of the things that I started sharing over COVID when I finally gave into Facebook Live because I needed to and people needed that energy and they could feel it coming right through that screen is I would do a distance Reiki session and then just place my hands on the keyboard and a little intuitive message would come through for each person, and that's been something that I enjoy doing with the distance healing.

Speaker 1:

Wonderful, wonderful. Well, that ends the first part of our journey and I'm going to continue with you as your guide through the next part, which is questions from listeners and social media. So here we go, number one I read on your webpage you are a Reiki voice instructor. Can you tell me a little bit about that? You mentioned a little bit of this, but maybe you can go into a little bit more detail.

Speaker 2:

Sure, oh, I love this and this is such a natural evolution for me. So I have been a natural hummer since I was a little girl. I would do it in class and not even realize I was doing it, and many times when I'm, you know, humming or just singing little songs and kind of almost semi-meditative, it is spiritual information that's coming to me and through me, which is really really cool. So one day when I was sharing Reiki, it came to me that I was quote unquote the voice of Reiki. I didn't know exactly what that means. Part of it is what I share with my words. But then my friend, lana Ryder, is the person who created this program called Reiki Voice, and so I started studying with her. And Reiki voice is using the vibrations of the voice to help facilitate a little bit deeper healing while you're doing the Reiki.

Speaker 2:

I don't do it in every Reiki session. I allow myself to be intuitively guided, but it is toning, humming, gentle chanting. Toning, humming, gentle chanting, sometimes a little bit of singing, but it's all things that are very easy to learn. So I teach this in a one-day class. In addition to those things, people learn how to chant the principles in their original Japanese. They learn Japanese, they learn toning through a frame drum to use that as an amplifier. And what I have discovered? It's a really fun class and everyone is a little hesitant about using their voice in the beginning.

Speaker 2:

And so what I have learned as I teach this and I have also, besides Reiki space and I'm going to be teaching it in Lana space in Lancaster, I've shared it at the Northeast Reiki retreat up in Lake George as well is this class empowers people to use their voices in a very gentle way. We progress that through the class so that people become more comfortable, not only with using these techniques that you know that are awesome, but with using their voice in general, and I feel that women, through the course of time, have received some very mixed messages about using their voice. In fact, there's been times when we were not allowed to speak our truth in certain ways.

Speaker 2:

So it's getting easier through the generations, but we still carry some of that DNA with us, so it's to start to let go of some of that in a very gentle, loving way. So I'm loving teaching this class and it's fun and it's different and there's not too many people that teach it, so, yeah, Very good.

Speaker 1:

This works well into the next question regarding the gentle touch. You offer what is called Reiki by Reiki gentle touch. Can you tell me about your approach during a session?

Speaker 2:

Well, actually what you're reading is my byline, which is gentle touch, deep healing, and to me that is the description and the essence of Reiki. The Reiki that I share does include gentle, light, stationary touch. We are still, in Pennsylvania, allowed to touch, thank goodness, you know, as well as the balancing in the energy field off the body. And the lighter the touch, the deeper the work goes. You know you've probably heard of craniosacral work. You know their touch, they say, is the weight of a nickel to get to those deeper underlying emotional levels. Well, this is even lighter than that. So, even though it's very gentle and very light, the work is very deep and profound, and so that's kind of the byline I created to describe that in an easy way.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, beautiful, and this is our last question, so it's about the books that you have written. If you want to go into a little bit more detail about radiating our Reiki light, if you like.

Speaker 2:

Oh, my goodness. Well, I just want to say that these, in addition to being available in Reiki Space and Learning Place for those of you who happen to be local to Harrisburg and a couple other local places it is on Amazon. In fact, both of the books, the children's book as well as Radiating or reiki light are available on amazoncom, and if you want to support me and support this work, the very best thing you can do is, if you love this book as much as I hope that you will, because my intention is, everyone who holds this book be infused with the reiki healing beautiful just leave a review on amazon so that we can get up into those algorithms.

Speaker 2:

Um, you know that that will help the book spread, uh, very generically. Um, so far all our reviews are five stars, so that's very exciting and, um, yeah, so I think I kind of described it pretty well. Unless you have any questions about it, tracy, yeah, well with your uh reiki kids?

Speaker 1:

is that um, and a little bit more in depth? Is that something you do for trainings like level one and two? Is that something?

Speaker 2:

I only have done level one with the kids so far. Okay, um, and yes, they, they come for a training now. Their training is, uh like from 10 to 3, so it's a little shorter time frame. Usually the adults are 9, 30 to 5, 30 but, like I said, they they learn all about their energy. They feel the energy like we do in the class. They learn about self-healing and a little bit about meditation. They actually receive the Reiki one attunement just like the grown-ups do, and they we practice sharing with each other by the end of the day so that they can learn to share with family, pets, plants, things like that. They learn about the permission-based aspect of this right.

Speaker 2:

So you know it really takes them through from start to finish, including, like I said, a little basics about the history. So it's really fun because some of my Reiki kids come back to me when they're like going into college or moving forward with their life and it's really fun to see how much they have remembered. Right, you don't realize how impactful, right, you don't realize how impactful, um, but you know it's been really helpful, you know, for many of them. You know one one woman is in in, uh, you know, in university now and she had to interview someone to practice a particular interview style and I haven't seen her since. She was a reiki kid, you know, maybe seven years old. Yeah, you thought he thought of me and I think that was really awesome.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, Well, that was our last question as we were talking. Is there something that you may have forgotten or something that you'd like to share with the listeners? The floor is yours.

Speaker 2:

Oh well, I'm just. First of all, I'm very grateful to you, tracy. I love the opportunity to share this, and being on different podcasts is one way of getting the word out a little bigger, a little farther, to different audiences. You know, it's part, education is part of my life's work, as well as sharing this, you know, physically, hands on, you know. Again, I just want to remind people the importance of self care and the difference between self care and selfish, because when you allow yourself to be nurtured and filled up first, then when you choose to share or you're called to share or you're called to share, you're going to be allowing the flow to flow through you and you won't be giving yourself away, so that you don't ever have to become drained, burned out or resentful. So I want this for you, I want this for the world. The more of us that take this class, whether or not you ever put your hands on another person, you're raising your vibration, you become a healing presence and our energy increases exponentially. One plus one is way more than three.

Speaker 1:

Way more than two Right right, right right. Reiki sprinkles.

Speaker 2:

This work is really important in the world right now. Right. Because the more of us that do this, the more of us are going to help shift the vibration to more light, and we really need that.

Speaker 1:

Wonderful Well. Thank you so much, reiki, for joining me, taking time out of your very schedule to take be a part of this Ready Set Reiki journey. I appreciate you.

Speaker 2:

I appreciate you All, right my wonderful listeners.
