Five Minutes Of Fire (Luke 6:46-49)

What can God do through five minutes of faithful preaching?

Jesus closes His sermon with a challenging question: "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" He then paints the picture of two builders—one who builds on the solid foundation of obedience to Christ, and one who builds on shifting sand. The storms come to both, but only one foundation stands.

Today is a very special day. Did everybody have fun at the 4th of July yesterday? Glad to see. Everybody hold up your hands. Do you have both hands? You didn't blow your hands off? That's good. Everybody, a few people missing some fingers. That's good. Right. So today is a special day. One thing I am passionate about. Hang on. What did I forget? Uh pull the mic away from your beard, please. Okay. Is that better? How about that? Better? Okay. Sorry, it was crackling in my beard. Okay. So one of the things that I'm very passionate about is I talked about this a few weeks ago, is one thing that we're seeing in our denomination is we are not replacing leaders as fast as we are losing them. Ministry has not been something that people have um really been pushing hard into. And I think what people have found is ministry is harder than we think. And sometimes people are discouraged in it. And so today we're gonna do something called five minutes of fire, okay? And this morning, I hope to for this to be a little bit more exciting than the normal sermon, okay? Because you're going to get five sermons for one. Five for one, okay? And before you go, oh no, I'm gonna be late, each of them have five minutes. Five minutes of fire, okay? So we have five of some emerging leaders around here. Some are interns, uh, some are staff, but just haven't had the opportunity to preach on stage yet. But like I've told you, getting up here and speaking is really, really hard. We have a lot of amazing staff that make it look really easy. But if I was to put a microphone in your hand and say you're gonna do great, you'd stand up here and go, you'd be like Ricky Bobby. What do I do with my hands, right? Okay, it's not as easy as you think. And so today, the staff are gonna continue and they're gonna do exactly what we have been doing. And we're gonna start, so grab your Bibles, go to Luke chapter six. We're gonna start in verse 46 this morning. So if you have your Bibles, grab them, turn to Luke chapter six. We're gonna start in verse 46 this morning. So let me read the first verse to you, and then I welcome our first speaker. Luke 6, 46 says, Why do you call me Lord Lord and do not do what I tell you? Read that one more time. I don't think you got it. Why do you call me Lord Lord and do not do what I tell you to do? So, welcome to the stage, one of our interns, AJ Shaw. There he is. And AJ, I'll let you get set, and then we'll start the clock. He has five minutes, and just so you know, I didn't tell you this part why AJ's getting set up. Let me walk over to this. At the end, if they go over, they're going to hear the. You ready? If they go over, that's what they're gonna get. Now, if they stop in time, they won't get the, but if they go over, they will get the five minutes. All right. So y'all welcome AJ Shaw to bring the word this morning.

Okay, so I don't know if anybody told you, but since you didn't make it to prayer, we divided up your time amongst ourselves. So you have 30 seconds now, by the way. We left you 30. We left you 30. Okay, so guys, this is hard. This was hard. I'm not gonna lie. This was one of the toughest things that I've ever done. Uh, and it was trying to get to the five minutes, trying to either get at it or stay under it. Or oftentimes I thought I had about 30 minutes worth of stuff, and then I would practice it, and it was about a minute and a half, so we'll see how this goes. So I get nervous, I talk fast, so we'll see. Um, I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm okay. Uh so what Jesus is talking about here when he says, Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you to do? You know that I I I studied that question and I asked myself, why is it a question? Why didn't he just make a statement? And over time you start to really read it and you go from analyzing it to actually applying it to your own life. Uh, and that happened to me. I mean, the the verse had its intended in intended use on me for sure. Um, when he says Lord, Lord, he's calling out those of us who earnestly talk about him, earnestly say his name, profess his name, but then choose not to obey. And when I think about that, you know, you gotta think like he's not just talking to just someone who walked up to listen to him give a sermon. He's talking to those of us that follow him, that claim that we profess Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. And so when you hear that question, you put you put yourself in their shoes, the disciples' shoes, for a minute, you think, how would that have felt to them? How would that have felt when he just looked right at them and said, Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and don't do what I tell you to do? And when I think about that, you think, man, that question really hurts. It really hurts. As a matter of fact, I used a little bit of the cheat code and I called my dad. My computer keeps turning off here. I called my dad and he just told me, he said, Hey son, read first John. And so I'm gonna read a couple scriptures that really stuck out to me. Right off the bat, 1 John chapter 1, verses 6 through 7 is if we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. Not done yet. He keeps going. John chapter 1 John chapter 2, 2 through 5. This one, this one I read this one later. I decided to go back, read John again, uh, invite the Holy Spirit in, and this one really spoke to me. It says, He is the propitiation of our sins, not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we've come to know him if we keep his commandments. Whoever says, I know, but does not keep his commandments is a liar. The truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word in him, truly the love of God is perfected. I'm I promised I wouldn't get emotional here, but that one hit. That one really hit. That one spoke to me. And so as I continue to read this verse and and start to apply it to myself, and I started, you know, I I I'm fortunate enough that I get enough time in the truck at work. Uh, Justin, I think, has knows how this is. We get enough time sometimes to to ruminate on these things, to pick scripture and to stay focused. And something that I recalled recently in my my walk, and most of you don't know this, but this is very new to me. Um I had to ask myself a question where I was holding my faith. What was the object of my faith? You know, when we came to the church, we fell in love with all this the stage, the the music, the sanctuary, uh, Todd yelling at us every Sunday. Um we fell in love with all this stuff, you know. And then as as things went on, and as I kept, you know, I pray to myself that, you know, God, you'll open doors, you'll you'll put me where you want me. But I wasn't taking steps of faith. And so as I started to do that, things started to happen. For instance, the drums. And guys, I haven't played the drums in over 15 years before Hope Church. Um, I sold my kit when Brendan was a baby, and I hadn't even so much as sat behind one, so it's been a while. But all these things start to unfold, and all these things, and you fall in love with all this stuff, and and you know, worship music these days, I don't think anybody can argue worship music these days is not what I expected. I mean, when I first came back came back to Jesus, it was just it blew me away, all the music videos and all this stuff. But I had to ask myself a question. I was like, God, what am I what am I what am I in love with? Am I in love with you? Or am I in love with the things, the gifts, the blessings? And don't get me wrong, these things are incredible, and we love these things, and and you know, God is in the worship, God is in the praise. But I kept asking myself the question, who am I when the music stops? Who am I when Todd's preaching stops? Who am I when I leave here and I go back out into the world? Because it's easy to have faith in this room with a room full of it, but it's a lot more difficult when you get out there in the world. And we have to make a decision to choose not to not to blend in with the world he's pulled us out of. And so this question really is not a question meant to hurt you. I believe it's a question meant to search you. It's a question meant for you to look on the inside and take those steps of faith and understand do we really know who he is? Am I running out of time?

Great job. Great job. I gave you extra time. I gave you extra time. So, who are you when the music stops? I love that. I'm gonna give you this and I'll read your. This is Justin Tully. His wife, him and his wife, April, do connections. And Justin has verse 47 through 48. It says, Everyone who comes to me and hears my word and does them, I will show you like, I will show you what he is like. He is like a man building a house who dug deep, laid the foundation on the rock, and when the flood arose, the stream broke against the house and could not shake it because it was well built. Five minutes on the clock, Justin, take it away.

Thanks, AJ. Now that my heart's broken, and you slap me around. Um that right there, this it follows right along with this. Guys, um, Jesus says, if you want to be like me and walk like me, watch me. Do what I do. It's that simple. Yes, when we walk out there, there's people. People are gonna be people. But we have this amazing God who is with us daily, and all we have and we say, Oh, we don't have a manual. Yeah, we do. Follow it, just walk out the door, and if it says do it, do it. So, what is this all about? And this is what stood out to me in these two verses is they're both the same. They look the same. Everything looks fine, everything's great. The storm did not decide the foundation. This is where the most important thing comes in is your foundation. Yes, asking Jesus into your life, and then bam, what are you putting on it? It just the storm shows what's already there. The storm doesn't pick it, it doesn't do all that. So when we start with Jesus, Jesus says, Everyone who comes to me, all of you, you're in this room. I lost some spot. Everyone who comes to me, that is where the foundation starts. So those that don't know where to start, right there. Ask Jesus in your heart, then you got your foundation. It is not just a church, it's not your family background or knowing the right words. It's not about that. If Jesus is not first, your foundation is not right. If he is not number one in your life, and I get it, she's amazing. And she is my number one down here. If you put him first, she'll love you even more. He will love you even more because you're putting your family first, your heart first, and putting Jesus first. Do what he says. The wise man did not just hear the words, he acted on it. Jesus said he dug deep. Deep. And I'll go into, I'll go off topic real quick. I work for a company that is a sister company with a foundation repair company. And we have a map that shows where the foundation is in each county, each city, whether it's in Austin, whether it's in Houston, whether it's in Tyler, Texas, or right here in DFW, the foundation, when they have to go do a repair and to repair it and put piers in, some of these are 20, 30 feet deep where the rock is. So think about that when you're building your house and you see them bring all this dirt in and build up and build up and build up. Whoo, they get you thinking, that foundation, the rock is deep. Hearing is important, but obedience is what makes it solid. Hearing's easy. Doing it is hard out there. It really is. Like AJ said, people are gonna be people and things are gonna happen. But if you have Jesus first, that changes everything. The third thing is the storm will reveal it. The flood still came even to the house on the rock. Being built on Jesus does not mean we will never face troubles. We will daily. But we get to wake up daily and choose God and choose to walk with Him. But when the storm hits, the rock is what holds us together. It holds us steady. And it shows people when you run into things and the storm hits, and everything's happening to you, and you just stand up and walk right out the door with your hands held high, with your head held high, and just knowing God's got this. Whether it's in his, it's not our time. That's just it, it's in God's time. So, my closing challenge for you today, it's simple. Build on the rock now. Now come to Jesus, hear his word, do what he says, do not wait until the flood comes to find out what you're standing on.

How deep is your foundation? It's good. That's good. How far does it go down? And and what I love what he said. The storm only reveals what was already there. That was good. Next is DeAndra Barham. No, she's not up here because she's related to me. She's up here. She actually chose to be related to me. I actually tried to talk her out of it. Um, if you don't believe me, just ask her. Uh uh, and what is interesting is each of these built their message in in private. Now I told them what verse they would have, but they all built it separately. And it's amazing how the Holy Spirit's working it together, right? Okay, so Deandra is she's reiterating verse 48. Here it is. He is like a man building a house who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it because it had been built. Okay, guys. So today I'm gonna be talking about the streams in life that go against our foundation. Okay, so nervous. When you look at a house, what do you do? What is the first thing you see, right? Like, you don't go up to a house. I know none of you have probably done this, and you're like, ooh, look at that foundation. That is such a nice foundation. Oh my goodness. No, you usually see like what the paint color, the roof. You see all the pretty stuff, right? It's the same with people, right? You can see all the really pretty outward appearance, but what you can't see is what's underneath, okay? You don't see what's underneath, but like Justin said, the storm is going to expose what's truly beneath the surface of all that pretty exterior, okay? Because the enemy sees us, he sees us, he sees us building that foundation, right? And the enemy's goal is not always to destroy us with one massive wave, okay? More times than not, it's small, constant streams that wear away at our foundation over time, okay? So, so we're gonna get into what those streams look like, okay? So, first, I have the stream of trials and difficulties, okay? So, notice that Jesus doesn't say if the flood comes, he says when the flood comes, okay? So none of us are exempt from pain, disappointment, sickness, loss, or even seasons of uncertainty, okay? I feel like this is one of the most powerful streams, guys, because this can attack us on every single level. It attacks us physically, it attacks us emotionally, and it attacks us spiritually, most importantly, right? Trials, they don't just test us, they exhaust us, and that's what the enemy wants, right? So most of us can handle storms for a day, okay? Storm for a day, that's not that big of a deal. But what happens? What happens when the storm lasts for longer than you expected it to? What happens when it lasts for weeks, months, or even years? Okay. What about your prayers remain unanswered, or your grief doesn't go away, or your financial struggles, they continue. It's gonna wear on you, and that's what the enemy wants. But if your foundation isn't strong, you're gonna become weary, and the enemy is always gonna un is going to use uncertainty to attack our faith. That's what he does, right? Okay, so the next stream I'm getting into is the stream of false teaching. This is a big one, guys. So we're constantly scrolling social media looking for something satisfying to watch, right? I'm so bad about it. So, say you guys start watching videos of an influencer talking about the gospel, and they sound so convincing, but we have to remember that not everybody's speaking God's truth. Most of the time they're speaking their truth. Okay, there's a big difference. Maybe they start quoting scripture, or and it sounds like sound doctrine with just a little bit of deceptions mixed in. Like God just wants all of us to be happy, right? He just wants all of us to be happy, or you can follow Jesus without fully surrendering to him. Okay. Or my favorite is if it feels right, it must be from God. Okay. Listen, you don't completely reject God's truth overnight, but instead, slowly over time, the stream it gets bigger and bigger and bigger. And it starts, you start making little compromises that shift us from biblical truth, right? Maybe you start living your truth, but what does Jesus say? He says, I am the way, I am the truth, and I am the life. Okay, my last one is comfortable Christianity. This dream shows us that we can follow Jesus without surrender, obedience, or repentance. Okay. This stream wants us to dig, but not too deep. Not too deep, guys. It's gonna tell us that surface level faith is really all you need. And we want the foundation, but without the digging, right? It's it's good. So um I lost my place now. Comfortable Christianity, it loves convenience, right? Loves convenience, but the cross was not convenient, guys, and the early church was not comfortable. He lives a, he wants us to live an uncomfortable life, guys.

Each of them, they're I'm walking towards them. I'm like, oh, they're gonna they're gonna snap. Okay. So next is Georgia Hale. Georgia is an intern in the Mexican department, um, and she and she's doing a great But what I love, what DeAndre says, you don't lose your foundation instantly. It's one compromise at a time. So let me give you this. Georgia is on verse 48 as well. So this verse is the key verse, okay? Let me read it to you again. Verse 48. He is like a man building a house who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And while when the flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. Five minutes on the clock. Take us away, Georgia.

Okay, so this verse, I wanted to point out how the picture it uses is a well-built house, teaches us important spiritual truth, strength that comes from the foundation beneath us, not from the storms we avoid. When I was handed this one, I'll be honest, there's a lot to do with it. There's so much to point out, but I have two main points that we're going to try to get through very quickly. So the first one is our strength comes from him, not ourselves. There's a verse that I had had found too to go along with this. It's Psalm 182. It says, The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, and whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation and my stronghold. That one I had absolutely loved to read with this. Because the person, the guy who built the house, he didn't. Sorry. The person on the guy who built the house, he his house didn't last because he was a strong builder. He didn't do it for a living. He didn't build stuff like that. He built it on the rock and he put his faith in the Lord. That's the same with us. I could say, oh, I went through all of this, but through the storms, even though I get through those, even though we all go through those, we could get to we make it through because of where our faith stands. If you have strong faith, your foundation will last. If you have a weak faith, it won't last very long. And not only that, the trials reveal our foundation. They reveal how strong it is. We can go through all the hard stuff, but if our faith is not strong, we won't make it through. We have to turn to the Lord through everything that happens, through everything that we go through, through it all. And there's something I had wasn't gonna like point out, or I was have a story about myself, I'm gonna tell real quick that I tossled with telling about this, but it's who it goes along with this. Um throughout 2020, I had a health scare. I was diagnosed with cancer. And I made it through because I turned to the Lord and turned to him and said, I am scared, I don't know what to do, I need help through this time. And the reason why I made it out of that was not because of my strength, wasn't because my family was with me while they were and they stood by my side the whole time and helped me through it. It was because I turned to the Lord and was like, I need you, I'm putting all my faith into you. Fill me with your spirit, please, Lord, help me through this. So I have a question that I want to ask for you guys to think about throughout the week. Are you building your decisions, relationships, and priorities on what God says or on what the easiest and most popular thing is?

Somebody said he's grown up and he's now taller than me, praise the Lord, but he's been he's back from the great wilderness of Waxahachi at interning here. But I gave him uh the the verse. Hang on, where is my phone? Verse 49. He's gonna bring it home. And the and the bring home is but the one who hears and does not do like is is like a man that built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the string broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great. Five minutes on the clock. Take us away, Diesel.

Gotta say a couple things first. So it's gonna sound like I didn't write a thing. I'm just repeating what everybody said, but that just proves how much in line everything that everybody is talking about, how much every the all the the four verses, four? Can we read four? Yeah verses, but the four verses, whatever, same thing, four people, four verses, whatever. Uh it it just kind of proves how much there was to go in line with everything. So um everybody is building something at all times. You're always building something, you're building your future, you're building your faith, you're building your family, you're building your relationships, whatever it is. You're building everything, you're calling all of it all at the same time, all the time. There's never a time that you're not building anything. But the question isn't if you're building, it's what you're building and what you're building on. So storms are always gonna be guaranteed. Storms are gonna be there all the time, every time. The only thing that's questioned is whether your foundation will hold. Like I said. Bad soil may look different to everybody. So your bad soil could be uh something you're personally dealing with. Um, it could be building your life on like popularity, feelings instead of God's word, um, the sin you refuse to surrender. Your bad soil can can be whatever to different people, it can be so many different things. But the thing is that everything seems fine until the pressure is exposed. The pressure exposes the foundation. So storms don't bring weakness, they reveal it. So, my first point is the soil doesn't look bad until the storm comes. Our goal isn't to avoid storms, our goal is to prevent the storm from actually doing anything to our lives. All it is is just proving that the storms aren't strong enough because of what our foundation is built in. Because our foundation is built in the right things, it won't move. So, uh in uh verse 49, it's talking about the man that didn't obey Christ, right? So in the story, he wasn't an atheist, he wasn't arrogant, he wasn't ignorant, he wasn't nothing, he just simply chose to hear what Jesus said and not obey. So, like in James, James says, or Jesus says, this man heard his word. So James in verse or chapter one in James chapter one, verse 22, it says, be doers of the word, not hearers only. So brings me my second point. There's a difference between hearing and listening. I know my mom's in the room, I know I heard that plenty. I know I say it to my kids uh whenever I'm at work or here at the church, whatever. I I say it to everybody. If if you're only hearing, you'll never you'll never do what you need to do. So, and you it it comes to listening, is whenever you actively want to hear what they're doing, but then also put it into action. Hearing is just okay, I'm gonna let it go in one ear, not the other. So, church attendance doesn't save you. Knowing scripture doesn't save you. It's the obedience and the application that what is what your foundation is built on. It's not built on coming to church every Sunday and on Wednesdays and going to the classes and whatever. It's not. But knowledge without obedience produces instability in our lives. So that's what hearing brings you to. Hearing and not listening, hearing and just letting it go and letting it do whatever instead of actively acting on what it is, then that's what it brings you to. Which brings me to my third point, which I'm pretty sure everybody said. Compromise is what leads to the collapse. It's a buildup. I don't know if someone said it. I think it was, I don't know. Um so nobody wakes up one day just wanting to destroy their lives. No one, no one wants to do that. Um, they don't want to destroy marriages, ministry, your walk with God, your kids' lives, your future. You don't want to destroy it. It's not destroyed by one bad decision, it's built up from one compromise to the next. How you build your foundation determines not only what other people see, but what the outcome of the storms will be. We spend so much time asking God, as well as asking ourselves, why did my life fall apart? But for some reason we're ignoring what Jesus said, or Jesus is asking us, what was your life built on whenever it did fall apart? So I got three questions or transformational moments, if you will. Sit down. Sit down. Uh does the soil I'm building my life on look good in the sunshine and the storm, or just in the sunshine? Am I hearing or listening? And am I being a hearer or a doer? Am I letting am I letting compromise lead my life instead of letting God lead me?

It's good. So I'm gonna bring the worship team back. So here's what I want you to to hear this morning. What are you building your life on? Because I don't remember who said it either, but they said it. The storm will come. But the storm reveals your foundation. And here's the thing: we serve a God that even though our house may fall completely to the ground, he can build it up again. And so this morning, as we go into our altar time, I want us to take a moment and say, Lord, I need you to build my house on your foundation. Not on the sand, not on something that the world tells me that I need to build it on, but I want to build my house on you. And I think sometimes we do and we say, we go through the motions, and we think, well, I go to church, I do this, I do that, I do this. I think Diesel said it, and I bet his mom would run onto the stage and say, Yes. It's one thing to hear it, it's another thing to do it. You can hear over and over and over and over again the same things, but unless you put it into action into your life, it's not actually going to stand firm when the storm comes. But this morning, I want to encourage, I know there's people in the room that may not actually have a relationship with Jesus. Because you can't have a firm foundation in God if you don't actually know him. And so you have to start there. So I'm gonna ask everybody to bow their head and close their eyes all over the room. If that's you this morning and you don't have a relationship with Jesus, I just want you to know that God is here. Jesus is calling you to him, and he is drawing you to himself, and he longs for a relationship with you. And so this morning, if that's you, and you feel God's hugging at your heart, and you're like, Pastor, I don't even have a foundation. That foundation, the foundation laying begins with a relationship with him. So I'm gonna say a prayer, and you can repeat after me. But just repeat after me, dear Jesus. I'm a sinner. I need your love in my life. Forgive me for I've failed you. I give my heart to you today. Take my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.
