This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Garfield Bowen.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a chiropractor? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor Mitchell Steele, with Steele Spine. Chiropractic, Mitchell, how are you doing?
Speaker 3:Good. How are you doing today?
Speaker 2:I am well. We're excited to learn all about you and your practice. Tell us about your company.
Speaker 3:Yeah, so I'm located on Port St Lucie Boulevard closer to US 1, but it's actually a really good location because I have the ability to get people to and from the Turnpike right on Port St Lucie Boulevard and, being close to so many different outlets, it's kind of a good center for people to just stop by or when you're getting tasks done. Just something else that we can add into your daily regimen if and when you need care. But my office really focuses on trying to not only trying to assess what's going on from a musculoskeletal standpoint, but really trying to focus on trying to get you better, so that it's not a service that you need to continue to use for the rest of eternity or something that's an ongoing process without some sort of end date or end goal either. That's for sure.
Speaker 2:All of us could use a little tune up. How did you get into this business?
Speaker 3:Yeah, so my interest actually started when I was in high school. I played a lot of competitive hockey up in Buffalo, new York, and I actually got hip-checked. And when that happened I remember getting off the ice and I was talking to my dad after every one of our games and I told him I was like Dad, it seems like I can't walk straight or like there's something funny. I don't know if this is, you know, something like I dislocated my hip or if something's broken, but something seems really off. And you know him being a physical therapist.
Speaker 3:I thought it was crazy when he walked into a chiropractic office with me. He's like you need help from him. But from that moment on I just really kind of dove into the ability of, when someone walks into your office, being able to have a conversation, go through an exam and be able to offer some form of relief before they even walked out of the door. You know there's not many different fields in our our society that you can necessarily say, especially in the medical world, that after you have a conversation with a medical provider you walk out feeling better. Usually it's kind of you have to wait for some sort of process, some sort of procedure, get that medication filled. So to me this has been a really great way to be able to have a fulfilling day and really gratifying as well, day in and day out, every single visit.
Speaker 2:So what are some of the myths and misconceptions of the whole chiropractic industry?
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 3:So one thing that I hear very, very, very frequently is you know well, I've never come in because I've always heard or I've seen, once someone started going, that you know it's something that you have to continuously go for.
Speaker 3:You can't ever stop going right. And to some extent you know there are some people that choose, whether because they're dealing with a chronic issue that requires some level of care, or other people that choose to just come in as kind of like a preventative measure or maintenance similar to you know others that may have massages or everybody kind of has different things that helps us get through our day, stretching this and that. So you know that's probably the biggest misconception I deal with on a day-to-day basis is this thought that you need to come in every day or consistently over the course of your life, and to some extent you know that's there is benefit to it, but it's not a requirement by any means. My ultimate goal is to get you out of active pain that you're feeling, to help you feel better, to get up through your day and, if you feel it again, for me to be able to be here and have a resource on hand when you need me again.
Speaker 2:And I apologize. You're a doctor, so I'm going to refer to you as Dr Steele, if you don't mind. Yes, when you're not busy running your practice, what do you like to do for fun?
Speaker 3:So I like to do a few different things. I'm a really big avid fisherman, but I actually have a six-month-old son now, so I've kind of lost a lot of my free time to be able to get out and go fishing. But something that I've also kind of learned is a self-skill and something that I really enjoy is I actually build fishing rods too on the side. So instead of me being out on the water now, I've been helping a lot more my friends and hearing a lot more of their stories as I build them their gear to get out on the water.
Speaker 2:That's pretty interesting. That's pretty interesting. Let's change gears a little bit. Life often throws us curveballs. Let's talk about one hardship, one life challenge, something that you can look back today and say you're better and stronger because of it. What comes to mind?
Speaker 3:Yeah, so the biggest hardship that I've definitely had to go through in my life, and someone that was a big mentor to me, is actually losing my father.
Speaker 3:He had passed away about a year ago now and you know, on so many levels, from just a personal mentor level to being kind of my business advocate if I needed any questions answered, he'd be able to be there and answer them for me.
Speaker 3:You know anything. To that extent that was kind of my go-to person for everything. So not only did I lose the person that was there that would answer and help me out with things, but I also had to fill that role now for my mom, helping her out with anything under the sun that you can ever imagine. And that was really kind of the breaking point where I went from saying, hey, you know, I'm a chiropractor that helps patients out, to now I'm going to be a chiropractor that owns his own business, that is able to kind of just put everything on his belt and take it into my own hands. Because that experience really showed me, you know, despite how big of a hurdle you think that you have to jump over, it's really just a matter of planning and executing. And that really kind of propelled me to move forward with opening my own business as well.
Speaker 2:It's tough. I can relate. I lost my father a few years ago as well. I know you have a lot to say about your practice, but if we could narrow it down to one thing, one thing that you want our listeners to remember about steel spine chiropractic.
Speaker 3:Yeah. So the big thing that I would say is that no level of pain is something that should be permanent. Right, it's not something that you can necessarily always with 100% certainty resolve or get rid of, but there's always something that can be done to help manage or to make your current situation better. And that's really what I'd like to drive home. I see it so many times where somebody's been dealing with a condition for such a long time They've been to five to 10 different practitioners, sometimes in multiple different fields. Sometimes it's multiple people in my own field and each one of us have kind of our own set of techniques and tools on our belt. So if you've had an experience and you feel as though it's something that you're stuck with, whatever, I'd really kind of encourage you. If it's with myself or any other type of care in the industry, I'd really recommend getting out and just trying to give it another chance, because oftentimes you just have to find that right solution to help get you better.
Speaker 2:My listeners now are listening to every single word coming out of the doctor's mouth, and they have one question on their lips right now, and that's how? How can we get more information about steel spine spines, chiropractic?
Speaker 3:Yeah, so I'm listed on Google. I do have a Facebook page as well, and then as well as my website. With each one of those, I try to give little nuggets of information about the best way to schedule, best way to get in contact with us, but, by all means, the most amount of information that you can find will be at our website steelspinescom.
Speaker 2:For those that like to just push the buttons on the phone is there a number? You'd like to share? Yeah, that number would be 772-222-5311. Well, Dr Steele, we really appreciate you coming on our show and we wish you and your business the very best moving forward.
