Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. All you need with a notary service. Well, one may be closer than you think To have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, than you think To have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Tamara Spates, with Notary TLC Notary Services. Tamara, how are you doing today?

Speaker 3:

I'm doing pretty good.

Speaker 2:

Listen, we're excited to learn all about you and your business. Tell us about your company.

Speaker 3:

Well, I am a notary and I am a mobile notary, meaning that I provide your services, my services, wherever you are, so I can physically come to your job, your home. We can meet in a local restaurant, but what I do is primarily. One of my primary functions is a loan signing agent. I facilitate loan closings for lenders, title companies. I also do general notary work deeds.

Speaker 2:

I'm a certified trust delivery agent delivery agent and I also do online notary services where you can do it online with me.

Speaker 3:

So tell us, how did you get into this business? Okay, I became a notary years ago and when I was working for a mortgage company I found the need to have documents, certified copies and whatnot. So my employer at the time asked me to get my certification and I really didn't use it much at that time outside of my function, my regular job functions except maybe at church or when friends needed, you know, documents notarized. During the pandemic that field, the field you know I realized how vast the field was and what I could do with my certification and I immersed myself in it.

Speaker 2:

So what are some of the myths and misconceptions of the whole notary process?

Speaker 3:

Being a notary I'm is is not something difficult to achieve or to get, because you just need to, you know, the meet the criteria for the state of your state, or this, in my case, the state of florida, and you can get your certification, um.

Speaker 3:

One thing that um is as far as they're. Sometimes I've know I've been faced with people who will, who, let's say, it's a husband and wife, um, I've been faced with people who, let's say it's a husband and wife, they may, you know, or it's someone you know. I mean, well, you know, this is my husband, this is my wife, but they couldn't be here to sign face to face and I will have to, you know, let them know that. Unfortunately, I'm not able to do that because I have to physically see them sign the document, obtain their ID, verify their ID in order to do it. Even if I know the person, I cannot sign that you know, or certify a document with you know, notarize a document without them physically being in my presence, be it online or in my, you know, in front of me physically.

Speaker 2:

So you add validity to that whole. Just you having your little stamp, you make them official. Yes, yes. So when you're not busy running your practice tomorrow, what do you like to do for fun?

Speaker 3:

I have a hobby that's also been a side business that I've had for some years, and that's cake decorating. So I decorate cakes. I do everything from wedding cakes to cakes cookies, and I do have a Florida cottage business where I'm allowed to bake out of my home and sell my goods. And my husband's recently retired so and we are empty nesters. So we have been doing this business has allowed me the flexibility to do various activities that we weren't able to do when we were both working full time.

Speaker 2:

It's good to enjoy it. You know what I mean. They're out, so you got to enjoy it now, you don't?

Speaker 3:

have the kids to worry about anymore, right?

Speaker 2:

Yes, let's change gears a little bit. Life often does us curveballs. Let's talk about one hardship, one life challenge, something that you went through, and you can look back today and say that you're better and stronger because of it. What comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

I was employed for 17 years with the company here Well, the company QVC. I was employed with them for 17 years and the site was closed back in 2016. So that in itself is because, you know, I was looking forward to maybe a few more years of, you know, working there and then thinking about possibly retiring. That threw me a curveball because I wasn't ready to, but because of that happening, it opened my you know, my mind up to other things. This is how I ended up where doing what I'm doing now, doing something that I would thought I would never really utilize never really utilize.
