He shares the comprehensive services his company provides across the Treasure Coast, from residential and commercial projects to panel upgrades and new constructions. But Jonathan's journey is not just about wires and circuits—it's about resilience and giving back to the community. Living in Stewart, Florida, and balancing his professional life with a love for paddleboarding and pickleball with his kids, Jonathan shows us the human side of the trades. This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Garfield Bowen.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of an electrician, or maybe? A mass electrician. Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Jonathan Davenport, with JD Unlimited Electric. Jonathan, how are you doing today?
Speaker 3:Hey, hey guys. How are you doing? Doing fine.
Speaker 2:Listen, we're excited to learn all about you and your business. Tell us about your company.
Speaker 3:Well, I'm JD Jonathan Davenport. I'm the sole proprietor of JD Unlimited Electric here in Stewart. We're a pretty brand new business. Let's see, I'm an unlimited licensed contractor, electrical contractor. We're serving the treasure coast, you know, from port St Lucy to Palm beach counties. Uh residential, commercial, um panel upgrades, new construction remodels, kitchen remodels, whole house remodels, uh EV pool equipment, um car chargers. You know, anything to do with electrical I'm going to have my hands on in Garfield.
Speaker 2:I see you make it happen right.
Speaker 3:Yes, sir, generator installs standalone. You know anything to do with electrical sir?
Speaker 2:So tell us, how did you get into this business?
Speaker 3:It's a good question. I think I was around maybe 21, 22 years old, just a kid kicking rocks trying to make a way, and I worked construction for a little while and I came home one night and I told my mom I wanted to go back to school and I picked electrical. So I kind of went to my community college around town and I got an electrical diploma and that kind of kicked off my little career. It was a one year degree. It was nothing, you know, no apprenticeship or anything. It was just a one year degree. And then I got in with a really, really good company and you know it was kind of heavy industrial company, motors and controls. You know they built like an IBM BB&T data centers and they offered me an apprenticeship program and I completed that.
Speaker 3:And last year I kind of just did a dead halt on everything I had in my life. I kind of had a milestone, you know, 40 years old, old, you know, oh my gosh, I'm 40 now and I just put everything on hold and and I started studying and I took all my money and invested in myself and I got all my books and all my everything, all the material, and I just started studying. And then my last two months. I've passed both my exams for state license and this is where I'm at now. You know I've been in the trade for 18 years. I've seen a bunch, learned a bunch. You know I've studied under master electricians for 18 years. Now it's time for me to be a master electrician and run my own company.
Speaker 2:That's excellent. What are some of the myths and misconceptions of the electrical industry? I know y'all know how not to get shocked, huh.
Speaker 3:Yeah, one of the myths, I got a couple. But one of the myths, uh, we'll have, I got, I got a couple, you know. But, um, one of the myths that you see in a bunch of textbooks and a bunch of things out there, you know, maybe you might even google it uh is, uh, electricity takes the path of least resistance and kind of sort of that is, but it's not the case. You know it is, but it doesn't. You know, don't let that fool you. Electricity is always uh.
Speaker 3:Electricity is generated from, you know, natural resources wind, uh, water and you know it pushes, pushes electrical, magnetic, magnetic field around increased voltage which pushes current down transmitting lines to where we're at, to your home, to your power station, around your neighborhood, and it doesn't take the path of least resistance. It it does. It creates a bunch of parallel loops inside your home and businesses. Electricity is always trying to find a path back to its source, not least resistance. Lighten it up a little bit. Another myth of electricians is we don't know how to use brooms or dust pans or pick up behind ourselves, and we do clean up behind ourselves. So that's another myth we got out there. But yeah, that's it for right now.
Speaker 2:So, jonathan, when you're not busy running your business, what do you like to do for fun?
Speaker 3:Well, over here in Stewart man, we do some paddle boarding, we play some pickleball. I have two kids, one's 18. One's 13. Boy and a girl. So best of both worlds, we like to go early morning paddleboarding. You know, in the river, um, there's a bunch of activity out there, you know. Dolphins, manatees, love the love, love this treasure, coast, crystal blue water. You can jump in and just, you know, relax. That's, that's kind of what we do, you know, not every Saturday, but at least two times a Saturday, two Saturdays a month or so. We try to get out there. So that's what we're doing.
Speaker 2:Well, we're in paradise here in Florida. You know you get to live our dreams, so you got to make sure you enjoy this. It's been kind of hot lately, though, but I guess, if you can get through the heat- you get out there early in the morning, it's not, you know it's not too bad uh let's change gears a little bit.
Speaker 2:Life often throws us curveballs. Let's talk about one hardship, one life challenge, something that you've been doing. You can look back today and say you're better and stronger because of it. Um, what, what? But what comes to?
Speaker 1:mind.
Speaker 3:I'd say you know just the hardship of you know just out here. You know you're a kid, You're working, you want to impress, you want to do the right things. You know just, you want to have you right things. You know just, you want to have you, you want things.
Speaker 3:And you know, as a construction worker, you know in the electrical industry you got you get kicked around by a lot of older people. You take a lot of verbal abuse. You take a lot of of mental, verbal and physical abuse. You know in the sun and you know you get a lot of crappy jobs and abuse. You know in the sun and you know you get a lot of crappy jobs and, um, you know you just gotta, you gotta put one foot ahead of the other and just take it with a grain of salt and just pick your head up. And you know you gotta, you gotta stand up, man, and you gotta be strong man. You know just, if you just like my, just like my case uh'm a master electrician now I'm always going to work hard and do those jobs in the sun and stuff like that but I'm at a point in my life now where I can hire somebody to crawl through an attic or not take those type of jobs anymore or do those type of jobs anymore.
Speaker 3:I'll still get down and dirty, but you know that's. There's also a stereotype that construction workers aren't, you know, smart and aren't driven, and you know that. You know they don't, they don't, they don't want better things in their life. But you know that's not necessarily the case. You know. That just kind of plays back to my story. You know, last year I was like you know there's a turning point. You know I'm a construction worker, I want to change, I want to change something in my life and you know I just that's what I did and I got after it and I changed my life.
Speaker 2:So yeah, yeah, there's a famous quote that that says our character is not defined by how many times we fall, it's how we get up. You know, is it?
Speaker 1:And that seemed like you did a great job getting up.
Speaker 2:Listen, I know you have a lot to say about your business. I'm going to put you on the spot. I want you to narrow it down to one thing, one thing that you want our listeners to remember about JD Unlimited Electric.
Speaker 3:All right, yeah, I'm really proud.
Speaker 3:I'm not a service member, but I do appreciate all the service of all the veterans, and you know not not only the veterans, but, like all the people in the community that work hard and go and go to work every single morning construction workers, they put on their boots, nurses put on their scrubs, military put on their put on their helmets and vests, and you know everything I want to. What I'm saying is my company is going to offer 10 off discount for all military uh, teachers, first responders, nurses in the community, because I just want to show you know this personnel or this group of people that you know you guys are important.
Speaker 3:You're not just. You know things do get better. We're all here together. We all want to succeed together and I just want to, you know, offer something for the community to have and grab onto out here. So I thought that was very important for me to, and it's on my vans, it's on my cards, it's on, you know, the website, everything. So it's very important for me to advertise that.
Speaker 2:A lot of my listeners are homeowners and business owners, and they have probably one question on their mind right now, and that's how? How do we get more information on JD Unlimited Electric?
Speaker 3:Let's see. Well, I have a website. I have a website at JDUnlimitedElectriccom. You can go to my website. You can see all the services we offer. You can go to my website. You can see all the services we offer, back to panel upgrades, ev chargers, insurance claims, the list goes on and on. About the services, you can reach me through my email, jdunlimitedelectric at gmailcom.
Speaker 3:We're also getting into a little bit of social media. Not everybody has social media now, so I'm finding out that it's really important to have a social media following. Not, you know, I'm not very tech savvy with that. I have my kids help me with it and do little Instagram things. But I'm on Instagram and Facebook. At JD unlimited electric, you can follow me, like my videos. I try to put out at least three to four videos per per week of like cool little snaps of me working or my guys working, where we're in the ditch or we're in the panel we've replaced a panel.
Speaker 3:We're working on pool. We've replaced a panel. We're working on pool equipment. We've yanked the motor out. You know, that way you can get more personalized with us and what we're doing, and that way we're just not a you know, a company out there. You know, oh, we're going to hire JD Unlimited. We don't know anything about them, but you know, I've got plenty of pictures and things on, you know, for to make it more personable. So that's where. That's where we're at. We're on social media.
Speaker 2:For those that like to just push the numbers on the phone, is there a number you like to share?
Speaker 3:Oh sure, yes, sir, we're going to be reached at 772-298-9383.
Speaker 2:That's going to be our business line. Well, Jonathan, we really appreciate having you on the show. We wish you and your business the very best moving forward.
