Speaker 2:Welcome back to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Hey, are you in search of a good diabetes and thyroid specialist? Well, there might be someone closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing Ahmet Ergen over at Diabetes, thyroid and Hormone Center of the Treasure Coast. How are you doing, ahmet?
Speaker 3:Good, how are you?
Speaker 2:I'm doing fantastic. Yes, sir, thank you for asking. I'm very fascinated to learn more about your company and for the listeners in the community to learn more about your company. So let's just start with that Tell us about this company.
Speaker 3:Yeah, so let's just start with that. Tell us about this company. Yeah, so I'm a physician, I'm an endocrinologist. I specialize in diabetes, weight management and hormone replacement therapy, for both men and women. So my journey began around 15 years ago when I left Turkey shortly after medical school. That was basically my commitment to medical field, to practice in the United States so, and I completed my residency and fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, a period that basically shaped much of my early professional life. And then I decided to move to Florida and, due to the warmer climate and all that, that's stuff that I like. And then recently we opened this Diabetes, thyroid and Hormone Center of the Treasure Coast, where I am a private practitioner. I used to work for a corporate. However, we made a fairly easy transition. That is because we are committed to providing patient centric, specialized care instead of just being under the dictation of a corporate.
Speaker 2:Hmm, okay, wow, that's. That's a fascinating. I think you kind of answered the second question a little bit, but I'm going to ask you anyways because I'm curious to know if there's more to it how did you get into this type of business?
Speaker 3:did you get into this type of business so well, I'm an endocrinologist, so I basically was fascinated with the hormones and how the intricacies of hormones play a huge role in the human body. So I took that route after my internal medicine residency. I took that route after my internal medicine residency and then, well, obviously you have to pick a job. So I start working in the corporate world and realize that there are a lot of deficiencies where you know we can provide much better care if you are independent and actually patients are aware of that and actually patients are aware of that and they applauded the move when we decided to go private practice, because everybody realized that how the current health system we have in town is not really meeting expectations of many patients.
Speaker 2:Very cool, I like that. You got a lot of education behind you, it sounds like, and a long journey to get to where you've come, it sounds like Okay so what's a myth or misconception that you've typically seen in that industry?
Speaker 3:So we really see a lot of patients with misconceptions, and that is basically around the misinformation that people find on Google, and that information becomes their idea. So it is just especially about the diabetes and hormone replacement therapy. They hear so many things and they come in with preconceived notions. They hear so many things and they come in with preconceived notions, again influenced from these unreliable online sources. And nothing wrong with being knowledgeable, but sometimes, when that becomes a preconception, it becomes hard. For example, when it comes to TRT for men or hormone replacement therapy for women, men tend to underestimate the risk. Women tend to overestimate the risk. However, the truth is kind of far from that. When it comes to diabetes management, people are scared of doctors because they think that they are going to get insulin when they walk into a specialist's office, or they have unrealistic expectations or unrealistic fears from what they are getting into. And my job is to basically dispel those myths and provide them with factual, evidence-based information and so that they can make informed decisions about their health.
Speaker 2:Very nice. So, yeah, it sounds like not only have you identified the misconceptions, but it's part of your job to deconstruct that misconception and give them the real, the proper education, if you will, and the right information.
Speaker 3:Exactly.
Speaker 2:I like that. Okay, so who are your target customers and how do you attract them?
Speaker 3:Well, all clinic services are basically attracting everyone dealing with diabetes, thyroid issues, thyroid nodules, hormonal imbalances. The good thing is we have established a solid reputation. I've been in this town for seven years now and that dedicated years of service which naturally attracts new patients. We also get referrals from satisfied patients and local healthcare providers, from other doctors. That is basically the backbone of our new patient population. Typically. We also have an active engagement platforms. I have a YouTube channel with over almost a million actually not over yet, but almost a million followers, and that YouTube channel focuses on diabetes, insulin resistance and weight loss, and that is what draws interest from potential patients who are seeking reliable and compassionate care from us.
Speaker 2:Very cool. I like that. Congratulations on the followers and being able to have a platform to provide value on there and answer questions and give people that information that we were just talking about. Thank you, thank you. All right, so, outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?
Speaker 3:Well, I'm a big fan of water sports. We live in Florida Right, so you can often find me jet skiing, or, if it is windy, I go kite surfing. And, of course, I also try to cherish my time with my family. I have a four-year-old and a two-year-old. We are at the beach if it is a beach weather and otherwise we are trying to explore some local attractions with the family.
Speaker 2:Very cool, sounds like a lot of fun, and I've never done the kite surfing I think you called it.
Speaker 3:That is a challenging one. Yeah, that requires a lot of years of dedication, and learning curve is pretty steep there, for sure.
Speaker 2:Nice. All right, I'm going to switch gears on you a little bit here, so can you describe a hardship or a life challenge that you've went through and made you stronger?
Speaker 3:So the biggest challenge for me was moving to a new country with, you know, limited resources from my end and no established network. So I came here basically with a lot of uncertainty. Three days after my medical school in Turkey, I decided to be in the US and decided to make a career in the US. So that was a lot of pressure on my end, because I burned the bridges. I knew that I was not going to go back. Not that, you know, turkey is not a bad country. You know it's fairly developed and a modern country. However, as you know, united States is the best. So, and if you feel like you deserve better, you sometimes move on to your life and seek for the opportunities, and I know this country provides the opportunities and makes the dream come true. So that is what was my biggest challenge. But everything, all my dreams, came true and that's why I'm here today.
Speaker 2:Very cool, Well, very inspiring story and again, congratulations on coming out on the other end and making something really positive out of that situation. Thank you All right. So, uh, I'm at. Please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about diabetes, thyroid and hormone. Center of the treasure coast.
