From Personal Pain to Professional Practice: Megan Romano's Story
Ever wonder what happens when personal pain transforms into professional purpose? Psychotherapist Megan Romano's powerful story reveals exactly that journey. With nearly two decades as a licensed marriage, family, and child therapist, Megan's approach to healing trauma stands out in a field often misunderstood by many.
What makes Megan's practice truly revolutionary is her deep understanding that "trauma lives in the body" β a concept that challenges traditional approaches to mental health treatment. Having developed a patent-pending method that's showing remarkable results, she works with clients spanning from 3-year-olds to 85-year-olds across the globe. Her candid revelation about her own traumatic childhood drives her mission to ensure no one feels misunderstood or unheard as she once did.
Breaking down the harmful stigmas surrounding therapy, Megan challenges the notion that seeking help means you're "crazy" or weak. Instead, she emphasizes how being heard and validated calms the nervous system β a fundamental aspect of healing that applies to everyone from children to Vietnam veterans. With most clients finding her through word-of-mouth, Megan confidently guarantees results through her focus on nervous system regulation. Her work isn't just changing individual lives; it's reshaping how we understand trauma and recovery.

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Garfield Bowen.
Speaker 2:Welcome to Good Neighbor Podcast Live. Are you looking for a psychotherapist? Well, one may be close to me, you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, megan Romano.
Speaker 3:Megan, how are?
Speaker 2:you doing today.
Speaker 3:I'm doing well, thank you.
Speaker 2:Listen, we're excited to learn all about you and your practice. Tell us about it.
Speaker 3:Oh gosh, I have been a licensed marriage, family and child therapist for almost 20 years. I was initially based out in Brooklyn and now I'm on Long Island, but I do see people all over the world, believe it or not, and I am a trauma specialist, so I focus a lot on healing trauma, because trauma is in the body and a lot of us don't know that. So I focus a lot on healing trauma because trauma is in the body and a lot of us don't know that. So I focus on healing it. And I see people of all different ages and backgrounds and I have even, believe it or not, developed a method that's actually healing a lot of trauma and I'm getting it patented right now, which is exciting, so that's to add to it. So it's been. It's been a fruitful, a fruitful business, but definitely challenging at times, that's for sure.
Speaker 2:How did you? What led you into this field of work?
Speaker 3:To be honest with you, to be candid, I had a very traumatic childhood and, as a result of that, I really didn't want anybody to feel the way that I felt which was misunderstood and not heard, and so it kind of led me to this practice. I initially was a teacher, but I found myself helping the kids regulate their emotions instead of being able to teach them academics, and that's what really led me to following through to get my therapy degree.
Speaker 2:What are some myths and misconceptions of your industry?
Speaker 3:There's many, unfortunately. I'm hoping to break the stigma, but I think that there's an old school mentality of if you're in therapy, then you must be quote crazy or you're weak and can't handle anything. And I'm hoping to break that misconception because we all just need to feel heard and validated, and most people that's really all they need, because when you're feeling heard and validated and understood, it really calms the nervous system down to be able to open up more. And I treat many different people. I treat Vietnam vets especially, and hearing them process and work out their stuff has been so monumental. And so I think some of the misconceptions are you're quote crazy or something's inherently wrong with you if you're seeking out help, and that's definitely not the case.
Speaker 2:Okay, so who would you consider potential clients and how are you currently attracting them?
Speaker 3:I personally and professionally, I can see anybody really as long as they're presenting issues or impacting their relationship and their life, and so I've seen as young as three years old all the way up to like 85 years old and people from all walks of life, different childhoods and different presenting issues. I see couples, children, families, adolescents, and really what they're presenting issue is it has to be kind of impacting their way of life and their relationships.
Speaker 2:And what is this word of mouth? I mean, how are you attracting?
Speaker 3:Right now, a majority of my referrals are through word of mouth because I'm doing this method. However, I do subscribe to Psychology Today. Psychology Today is one of the main kind of hubs for finding a therapist and attempt my own advertising, but a majority is word of mouth at this point.
Speaker 2:Okay, have you ever thought about doing your own podcast?
Speaker 3:Yes, I actually my husband, edits podcasts and we did one podcast together years ago when COVID hit and it was really good we I really needed to submit this method to get patented before I could really talk about it, so I'm hoping a book will come out of it and different things, so I definitely have considered doing my own podcast, for sure.
Speaker 2:So, megan, when you're not so busy running your business, what do you like to do for fun?
Speaker 3:Honestly, I know it sounds crazy, but hanging out with my kids hanging out with my kids I am a Bravo-holic so I unfortunately watch Real Housewives. I love to shop, I love to do some interior design and attempt to go to the gym when I can, but really spending time with my family and hanging out with some of my friends has been shown to do Megan well.
Speaker 2:Okay, we're going to wrap, but I want you to leave our listeners, leave a list. This is one thing, one thing they should remember, if nothing else about your business.
Speaker 3:About my business? Is that? That's a good question About my business is that you, if you work with me, you are guaranteed to get better. You just are. When we can regulate the nervous system, everything comes down to regulating the nervous system, and when we're not regulated, everything kind of goes out the door. And so with me, you really learn how to regulate yourself and know what's going on in that body, so that you can be able to articulate and be able to live your life in a healthy way.
Speaker 2:Okay, there's this one question out. It's on everyone lips. How do we get ahold of you?
Speaker 3:I do have a website. I have two different websites. One is wwwmeganromanocom, so M E G A N R O M A N? Ocom, and then I also have it's developing, but it's Human Nation and it's wwwthe-human-nationcom.
Speaker 2:Okay, listen, megan. It's been a pleasure having you on our show. We wish you and your business the very best moving forward.
Speaker 3:Thank you for our show.
