Speaker 2:Hi everyone and welcome to Episode 131 of the Good Neighbor Podcast. Today we have with us Daniel Sampson and he is with Daniel Sampson Builder LLC. Did I get that right?
Speaker 3:Yes, you did.
Speaker 2:Thanks, welcome, daniel. Thank you for being a guest today.
Speaker 3:Thank you for having me. I'm excited.
Speaker 2:So let's start by telling our listeners about your business.
Speaker 3:I am a one-person business. I'm a one-man show. I do full service bathroom renovations turnkey. I'm a one-stop shop for somebody who wants to get their bathroom renovated and they need custom tile, they want a custom floor, they want a heated floor, they need drywall work, electrical plumbing. I take care of everything.
Speaker 2:That is amazing, so tell our listeners about your journey. How did you get started in this business?
Speaker 3:I started on a path towards building my own house and at the time I was in the business of field service management for a large company and I had not been on the tools for a long time. And I got my builder's license. I built my own house. I found the process so rewarding and it was so nice to make connections with local contractors and people that I knew from years prior that I really wanted to make a career out of it. So during the pandemic we slowly shifted out of the old business and into this getting licensed, getting the right equipment, getting a one-ton commercial truck and getting our business set up for success. So that's kind of how we got here. And so here we are six years later from where we started and we're up and running.
Speaker 2:We're a profitable, debt-free business. Good, it's good to hear that you're debt free, that's nice, yep. Can you tell us about any myths or misconceptions you hear about in your industry?
Speaker 3:I think there's lots of misconceptions out there about contractors in general and also tile and tile contractors, one of those being that all contractors are the same, and one of my goals is to prove people wrong, even if you've had a bad experience with a contractor before. My number one goal is to provide high quality customer service, and at the end, I provide clients with a QR code so they can go to Google review, and I have all five star Google reviews at this time. We go above and beyond to make sure that we leave a client's home cleaner than when we found it.
Speaker 2:That is awesome. Five star reviews are very hard to come by in an industry like yours, so that is awesome. When you're not working on your business, what do you like to do for fun?
Speaker 3:Well, I'm married to my best friend, carrie, and she's a wonderful woman. We do everything together. She likes to cook, I like to eat, so we do that. We have a 1930 Model A and we belong to a couple different old car clubs, so we get some community and fellowship with those guys and that's one of our hobbies. And I also have two nieces and a nephew that live just around the corner from us and we spend as much time as we can with them. They just grew up so fast, so we do soccer games and baseball, basketball, you name it.
Speaker 2:That Model A?
Speaker 3:you said yes, that's another whole podcast, right right oh, I could talk about it all day. Yeah, it's been in the family for 50 or 60 years oh wow.
Speaker 2:Describe one hardship or life challenge that you rose above and can now say because of that challenge that you're better for it and are stronger.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I would say one struggle that I really had as a young adult was speaking in uncomfortable situations to people that maybe are not so receptive to me, and also to large groups of people. So that was really a struggle that I took a long time to work through. I had the opportunity to work as a project manager for a large company and I had to report budgets and project statuses on. I would carry anyone from 25 to 35 projects at a time and I had to report this to a board of directors that was around 30 people.
Speaker 3:You can imagine someone who was not real comfortable with public speaking, especially in uncomfortable situations. That was surely a feet to the fire scenario. After doing that for several years and working with a group of people who were supportive and helping me on that journey, I'm now very comfortable speaking in front of people. And you know, life is about meeting your challenges and I think everybody has their own set of challenges and for some people not me necessarily, but for some people that's how you gain your superpowers is by really diving deep into those and facing the fear.
Speaker 2:I like how you said gaining your superpowers. That is great. What is one thing you wish our listeners knew about your business?
Speaker 3:Well, I would like you to know that I'm based in Port Huron, michigan. I do travel outside of St Clair County on occasion but we try to keep as much work in St Clair County as we can to limit the drive time and any kind of wasted time on the road. But we do work in Shelby Township and in that area. I also am a member of BNI, which allows me to be plugged into a group of 40 hardworking entrepreneurs in all different sectors of business. I have a very deep network of subcontractors and even unrelated people, such as bankers, real estate agents, home inspectors, that I can connect folks with and so I like to be a connector as well.
Speaker 2:That is great. And I know that B&I group is an awesome group for you every Thursday morning right, that's great. And I know that BNI group is an awesome group for you every Thursday morning right, that's correct. Our listeners are intrigued.
