Ezekiel 09: The Mark of God

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, pastor Brandon. Today, ezekiel, chapter 9, and today's title is the Mark of God. And if you've ever read the New Testament, especially the book of Revelation, I wonder if you're going to be surprised to find out that the mark of the beast that they talk about in the book of Revelation that's not the first time that's actually there. It actually shows up first in the book of Ezekiel. We're getting into all that in just a moment.

But, once again, if you have your Bibles and you want to open up with me to God's Word, don't forget that the overall goal of Ezekiel is God's promise of renewal. They're on their way downhill right now, but there's going to be a turn and you're going to start to see some of that turn as we are going through things in the next few chapters. Already, you're going to see and don't worry, there's still some negative stuff coming, but there's some good stuff happening as well, and what we're going to see today is something that many of us, if we've not read through the book of Ezekiel very much or the Old Testament at all, we think that the book of Revelation is the first time a lot of those ideas got there, but over 68% of the book of Revelation comes from the Old Testament and there are some that you go. Okay, I could see that. I could see some of the different things, but I'm going to tell you something. Some of them are just there, like we would think of the mark of the beast, the mark of destruction, like that is just in the book of Revelation. Well, I wonder if the shadow of it, or maybe Revelation, is a shadow of what's mentioned here. So let's read this together and let's see what God's word has to say to us today. You ready. Ezekiel, chapter 9, verse 1, says this Then the Lord thundered bring on the men appointed to punish the city.

Tell them to bring their weapons with them. Six men soon appeared from the upper gate and faced the north, each carrying a deadly weapon in his hand. With them was a man dressed in linen who carried a writer's case at his side. They all went into the temple courtyard and stood beside the bronze altar. And then I heard the Lord say to the other men, all who weep and sigh because of the detestable sins being committed in the city. And then I heard the Lord say to the other men follow him through the city and kill everyone whose foreheads is not marked. Show no mercy, have no pity, kill them all, young and old, girls and women and little children, but do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin right here in the temple. So they began by killing the 70. Begin right here in the temple. So they began by killing the 70 leaders. Defile the temple. The Lord commanded Fill its courtyards with corpses, go. So they went and began killing throughout the city.

God's Judgment Begins

While they were out killing, I was all alone and I fell face down to the ground and cried out oh sovereign Lord, will your fury against Jerusalem wipe out everyone left in Israel? Then he said to me. The sins of the people of Israel and Judah are very, very great. The entire land is full of murder and the city is filled with injustice. They are saying the Lord doesn't see it. The Lord has abandoned this land. I will not spare them or have pity on them. I will fully repay them for all they have done. Then the man in linen clothing who carried the rider's case reported back and said I have done as you have commanded. Wow. So what we're seeing here is we are seeing God's wrath finally poured out. But what I love is, he said now wait, though. Those who are not happy with this, those who are mourning what they have become, spare them.

Standing Firm in Faithfulness

In the book of Revelation, we see that a mark is put on the foreheads of those who follow the beast, and they are marked for destruction, but in this one they are marked for salvation. And so what can we take away from this? And that is this? Number one is to stand firm in faithfulness to God when everything around you looks like it's falling apart. Stand firm even when everything else is falling apart.

I wonder, in this analogy, what's going on in these people's lives? They are seeing their fellow Israelites just completely falling away from God. They're doing things that they would have never thought that they would have done, but they're doing it and they're not obviously able to stop it. But, at the same time, their heart mourns for the state that they're in. And there's times in our life when we can't always stop the bad things that people are doing, the bad choices that people make.

Sometimes, when you live in a nation and the nation is going in a wrong way, there's only so much that you can do. But you can do, but you can. You can, you can do something about your faithfulness, and so maybe this is the lesson for us today Even though you can't always help what other people do, you can help what you support because God sees. So my question for you is are you willing to stand against the crowd, because it looks like these people were a very precious few? Because it looks like these people were a very precious few, are you willing to stand out against the crowd and allow God to have his way? If you are, when destruction comes, god is going to see you.

Let's pray together right now, god. Thank you so much for today. Thank you, god, for a hard word like this that reminds us of the importance of faithfulness, god, I'm reminded that you haven't called us to do anything that you didn't do, that you, jesus, walked on this earth and you stood against everything and you were faithful and you showed us the way. I pray, god, that when all of the world around us looks like it's going crazy, help us to be faithful in you in all things. In Jesus' name, we pray Amen. And what God's word says in Ezekiel, chapter 34, verse 14, I will put my spirit in you, he says, and you will live again. My prayer for you is that you experience the life of God every single day.
