What if peace isn’t lost, just overlooked? We open Philippians 4 and trace a simple, powerful path: pray about everything, then train your mind to dwell on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. From a prison cell, Paul shows how joy can outlast any circumstance and how contentment is learned, not luck. Along the way, we unpack why prayer is more than a checklist, how gratitude reframes our needs, and why disciplined focus can silence the spiral of what-ifs.

We also explore Paul’s surprising stability in scarcity and abundance. He names the secret to staying steady in every season: strength through Christ. The Philippian church’s generosity becomes a living example of worship in action, a “sweet-smelling sacrifice” that meets real needs and delights God. Their story challenges us to see giving as partnership, not pressure, and anchors us in the promise that God will supply every need according to his riches in Christ Jesus. Peace, then, is not about perfect conditions but about a guarded heart and a guided mind.

If your thoughts feel loud and your heart feels thin, this conversation offers two surprisingly practical steps you can practice today. Bring God into the details and curate your mental diet toward the good. Watch how anxiety loosens its grip and how gratitude and focus create room for God’s peace to stand guard. If it helped you, share it with a friend who needs steady joy right now, hit follow or subscribe, and leave a quick review so more people can find the message. What step are you starting with—prayer or thought habits?

Welcome to the Bible Breakdown Podcast. Every day, we take one chapter of the Bible, dig deeper, and discover that the more we dig, the more we find. You can find out more at the BibleBreakdown.com. Now let's grow in God's Word together. Well hello, everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Philippians chapter 4. And today's title is How to Find God's Peace. How to Find God's Peace. I don't know if you've ever done this before, but uh my family and I, a few years ago, we stumbled across this app called Geocaching. It's this really neat thing where people from just all over the world, it turns out, will hide things and put them in like these like little locations. And then you download this app and it uses the GPS and it's like a treasure map. And you will have to go and try to navigate and find these little treasures. And it's really cool and it's really amazing, and it's fun to do with other people as you're all kind of trying to find it. And a lot of times people will have it hidden in certain places. And then once you find it, you're like, well, yeah. Why? I mean, because some because it's not like some whatever. Like I found one one time at a park that we used to go to all the time when our kids were small. So it was hiding in plain sight. I just didn't know to look for it there. And then afterward, you couldn't not see it, right? Well, sometimes we feel like the peace of God is like that. Like, God, I feel like your peace is so hard to find that I'm gonna need a treasure map to go find this thing somewhere. But can I tell you, once you find the peace of God, it's there in plain sight. And it's not hiding. It's just we don't know what we're looking for. And then when we find it, we can't not see it. Now, that doesn't mean that we always, you know, can we always do what God tells us to do, but at least we know where to go. And that's exactly what Paul is gonna share with us today: a guaranteed way that you can see God's peace and you can run to it every single time. But we're gonna get into that in just a moment. But before we do, as always, if you like what we're doing here, make sure you like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel, and to the podcast. Leave us a five-star review, and it really helps us to get the word out and everything that we're doing. Also, make sure you go to the Bible breakdown discussion on Facebook. They are doing an amazing job writing devotions, and it's been so good reading those every single day. And we love what they're doing. And I would encourage you to join in with us because, man, the more we dig, the more we find. You can also go to my blog at brandoncannon.com and subscribe to my newsletter. And every week I send out two things. I send out one, which is the Bible breakdown weekly wrap-up, where we talk about some of the different things, resources that I'm stumbling across, my favorite weekly devotion. And then also I send out kind of a some extra content from sermons on Sunday. And so sometimes if you hear something, you're like, hey, where'd Pastor Brandon get that or whatever? A lot of times I'll put those different resources there for more study because I really do believe the more we dig, the more we find. And that's definitely true when it comes to Philippians. There's so much here that we can't get into just for the sake of time. So I'd encourage you to dig in and see what God will share with you. Because remember, if you've got your Bibles, by the way, open up to Philippians 4 to get ready to finish this. Paul is writing this inspired by the Holy Spirit while he's sitting in prison. And as he's sitting there and he's having someone probably write it for him at the same time, you know, you know, he's he's still talking about wonderful things. Scholars call this the book of joy while he's sitting in prison. I mean, it's it's amazing to think. And that's why we said the theme of this is that your outward reality doesn't have to determine your inner joy, that actually God is with you more than you can imagine. Because see, happiness depends on happenings. You know, if it's sunshine, uh sunshining outside, I'm happy. If I got a raise at work, oh, I'm happy. But then the other side, if it's cloudy outside, I ain't so happy. If I got a demotion at work, I definitely am not happy, right? So happiness is determined on the happenings in our life. But joy is that settled, confident hope and faith that God is with us and God is moving in our life. And as he ends our our book today, he's gonna talk about how you can know, how you can find the peace of God, how you can know where it is. And you go get it. He gives us two things. And he says, you do these two things, I guarantee you'll experience the peace of God. Well, that's a big claim. So let's read God's word and see what these two main things are that guarantees we'll experience the peace of God. Are you ready? Philippians 4, verse 1 says this. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stay true to the Lord. I love you and long to see you, dear friends, for you are my joy and the crown I receive for my work. Now, I appear, I appeal to Yoda and Seniki. Please, because you belong to the Lord, settle your disagreement. And I ask you, my true partner, to help those two women, for they have worked hard with me in telling others the good news. They worked along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers whose names are written in the book of life. Now pause. So something's going on between these two people who probably making fun of each other's names because they're really hard to say. But whatever's going on, Paul's like, hey, can y'all can come on now? Y'all are bigger than this. Let's let's make sure we stay with some joy. Second thing I want to tell you about this is you notice in that last verse, he says, they worked alongside Clement and the rest of my co-workers. Clement was actually, you also say uh Clement, but he was actually an early church leader. And we have what we believe are some letters that he wrote to some other churches. Now, they were not considered divinely inspired at all, but we actually have some of those letters that were written as an early church writer as well. We think possibly might have been him. And it's really interesting to see that how he quotes a lot of what the apostle Paul was saying. So it's very interesting stuff that you should go dig into. Verse 4 says, always be joyful in the Lord. And I say again, rejoice. Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember the Lord is coming soon. And then listen to what he says. Here's two things that to guarantee you will have joy. Number one, don't worry about anything, but pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience the peace, which, or God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. So the first thing he said is, is pray. Don't be anxious. Don't don't let worry control you. Instead, bring God into the equation. Get God involved in what's going on. Then the peace of God will be with you. But then he doubles down and he says, and now, dear brothers and sisters, one other thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me, everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the peace of God, a God of peace, will be with you. So he said, let me give you two ways. Number one, get God involved. Talk to God about it. Whatever it is, talk to God about it. And then number two, fix your thoughts on good things. You have the peace of God is number one, get God involved. Number two, fix your thoughts and make sure that you're focusing on good things. Focusing on what God can do, not just the problem. We don't have a problem seeing the problem. We need to focus on what God can do about it. And he says, if you'll do those two things, I guarantee you you'll experience the peace of God. Now let's continue. How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me. Again, I know that you have always been concerned for me, but you didn't have a chance to help me. Not that I was ever in need. For I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live with almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret to living in every situation, whether it is with full stomach or empty, with plenty or little, I can do all things, I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength. Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulties. As you know, you Philippians were the only ones who gave me financial help when I first brought the good news and traveled on from Macedonia. Now, no other church did this. Even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent help more than once. I don't say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I just want you to receive a reward for your kindness. At the moment, I have all I need and more. I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with epraphroditis. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God. And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which he has given, which has been given to us in Christ Jesus. Now all glory to God, our Father, for ever and ever. Amen. Give my greetings to each of God's holy people, all who belong to Christ Jesus, the brothers who are with me, send you their greetings, and all the rest of God's people send you greetings too, especially those in Caesar's household. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. So Paul finishes up this letter by just saying, by the way, thank you guys so much for helping me. Thank you for being generous. Thank you for giving to others. And you know what? God has used you to meet needs in my life. And he's saying, I'm not, I'm not saying this because I need something else. I'm saying this just because I want you to be celebrated. You've been so helpful. And he's saying the God who has met all of my needs is going to meet all of your needs too. And then he finishes it off by just saying, you know, God's grace be with you. I love you. I love it. I just love that he just ends it just saying, I just want to say thank you so much. And I love that in the middle of this difficulty, he's in prison. He he's saying, My inward joy is not determined by my outward reality. And he finishes it by saying, and I want you to experience peace too. Paul, tell me. Tell me how you can be in this horrible situation, but you're experiencing joy. He said, I got two things. I got two things. Number one is I am not keeping God at a distance. I'm getting God involved. I'm praying, I'm talking to God. Well, some people would say, Well, Pastor, why should I even pray? If God knows everything and God's got everything, why do I even pray? Well, first of all, it's because you have you have a misunderstanding of prayer. Number one, prayer is not primarily about God doing what you want him to do. God's not our servant, God's God. We belong to him. So prayer is not primarily about giving God your grocery list. Prayer is about fellowship, getting God involved. But that at the same time, that doesn't mean we don't ask God for what we need. Number one, because God tells us, tell me what you need. And so here's the thing: God already knows, yes, he does, but he wants us to pray and talk to him. Because number one, when we pray and we talk to him, we're able to get his mind about things. But then number two, because it's our prayer that many times it's the answer that it then enables him to do, or not enables, but he uses to do his will. So just because God knows what he's going to do, it doesn't mean that your prayer wasn't part of what he wanted to do. You don't know. So you pray and you trust him, and then he does what is ultimately right. And so I want to encourage you to not not to see prayer as an agenda meeting, but as a time of fellowship and to say, God, this is what I need. And so I'm praying for what I need. And I don't know if you're gonna do it my way or not, but I'm letting you know what I need, and I trust you in advance for what you're going to do. And then when you do that, you remember, hey, you know, no matter what happens, God's faithful. God's gonna do it. God's got this. If he does it my way, then praise the Lord. If he does it a different way, then man, I didn't even know he could do it like that. That's even better. And so the first thing Paul said is, man, I trust God and I tell him about everything going on because I don't know exactly how what he's gonna do. And he wants me to pray to be part of it, or he wants me to pray so I can understand how he's gonna do it differently. I don't care. Whatever it is, is I'm gonna pray and I'm gonna trust him. Then the second thing, he said, and then I'm not gonna let the enemy get into my mind. I'm not gonna let him fill me full of doubts and fears. But instead, I'm gonna fix my mind on the good things, and I'm gonna realize that, man, God is for me and not against me. And so I'm gonna tell him everything. I'm gonna fix my mind on the good things. And he says, when you do that, man, the peace of God, which doesn't even make sense. Guys, I'm in prison. I'm in a nasty prison, but I got joy. And he's telling them to rejoice always. And he's like, he gets excited. He's like, again, I say, rejoice, party. Paul, you're in prison. I know, isn't it great? No, it's not great. Well, it is from my point of view. You know why? Because I done told God about everything. I'm fixing my thoughts. I got peace. And so I want to finish off with this. What is your prison right now? What is your outward reality right now? I don't know what it is, and it don't matter. What matters is that it's not fun. It's a difficult place right now. Can I tell you? I don't know if God's gonna get you out of that right now or not. I don't know what God's plan is. I don't know what he's doing. What I do know is he is completely for you. He is completely out for your good. Therefore, if he takes you out of it today, praise the Lord. If he doesn't take you out of it today, praise the Lord. Because he has a reason if you're still there. But it doesn't stop the difficulty while you're still there. So what do you do? Two things. Number one, to experience the peace of God, get God involved. Don't just say, well, God's gonna do what he's gonna do, so whatever. No, no, no. He says, bring it to me. Let's have fellowship, let's let's talk about it. I want to be part of the process. So bring it to God. And then the second thing is to fix your thoughts on what is good, what is pure, what is lovely, anything that is praiseworthy. Think about it and watch what God will do. Let's pray together. Father, thank you so much. You are worthy of it all. You are so worthy of our praise. And Lord, as we end our time in Philippians, I pray, Lord, that our joy will not be determined by what's on the outside, but will be determined by who you are. And that settled, confident peace that helps us remember that because you are for us, all things are possible. We celebrate you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Anyway, don't forget God's word says in Philippians 4, 6 and 7, we just read it. Don't worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and your minds as you live in Christ Jesus. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Second Kings chapter one.
