A tower “to the sky” sounds inspiring until you hear the reason behind it. We’re in Genesis 11 today, breaking down the Tower of Babel and the moment humanity takes a shared language and shared strength and uses it to chase fame, control, and a future without God. That’s the real tension in this story: the bricks aren’t the issue, the heart behind the building is.

We read the passage closely, ask what was actually wrong with everyone wanting to stick together, and connect the dots to God’s earlier command to fill the earth. Then we talk about why God steps in to confuse the languages and scatter the people, not as a random act, but as a sovereign interruption to stop a united rebellion and to keep redemption moving forward. If you’ve ever wondered what the Tower of Babel means or why languages matter in the Bible, this chapter gives you a clear lens on pride, obedience, and God’s relentless pursuit.

From there, Genesis 11 pivots into Shem’s genealogy, shrinking lifespans, and the family line that leads straight to Abram. We also pause on the surprising detail of Terah’s journey toward Canaan that stalls short, and what that can stir up in our own lives when we stop mid-call. We end with a simple, personal question: are we treating God like a business partner, a distant pen pal, or the lover of our soul? If this encouraged you, subscribe, share the episode, and leave a five-star review so more people can break down the Bible with us.

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 11. And today's title is The Tower of Babel. The Tower of Babel. Many people, many scholars believe this to be really the second time that God just looked at everybody and said, we really got to fix this. You know, you would have, and honestly, if you think about it, it's kind of the third, because the first time was in the Garden of Eden, the second time was the flood, the third time is, come on, guys, what are you doing? And so we're going to get into all that in just a second. So if you have your Bibles want to open up with me to Genesis chapter 11. While you're doing that, as always, take just a moment, like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure to leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you're going to the Bible Breakdown Facebook page. My mind went completely blank there for a moment. It is an amazing group of people. They're doing a wonderful job writing devotions every single day. And as always, you can get all the links to that at the BibleBreakdown.com. Well, this story today reminds me of my girls in that. Do you ever have those moments when you think you're doing the right thing, but then you turn around and your parents are like, no, you're no, that's not right. I I remember with my girls when they were little, one of my daughters in particular, she was always into stuff. And so if she wasn't, you know, getting all of her toys literally out and putting them all over the house, we would go fix that. And then she would go over and she would get all of the pans and pots out of the cabinets. And then while we're fixing that, she would go over and mess with her uh her sister's things, and it's just just constantly like, could you just stop? Can you just stop for a moment? That's what it seems like is going on in today's chapter. Because remember, you had the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3. Then we just got through uh with everybody messing up again and God having to send a flood and kind of starting over again. Well, now again, we have where we humans just cannot seem to figure this out. And remember, we're in the book of Genesis and we're talking about the beginning, not just the beginning of mankind, but also the beginning of redemption. And there's a lot of amazing stories that happen in the book of Genesis, and there's so much time that has passed between now and then that some of them are hard to get our minds around, including today's story. But if remember, we have said that if the first verse of the Bible is true, that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, then everything else is at least possible, including a time when everybody was speaking the same language. They're all kind of on the same page. And then because we were using that as mankind to really continue to not get close to God, God said, Okay, we got to mix this up. So if you're ready, here we go. Genesis chapter 11, verse 1 says this. At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words. Now pause. Remember, that's not that hard to think about because the flood had just happened and there wasn't a whole lot of us around, right? Verse 2. As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there. They began saying to each other, Let's make bricks and harden them with fire. In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar. Then they said, Come, let's build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world. Verse 5. But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower and the people that the people were building. Look, he said, The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them. Come, let's go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won't be able to understand each other. In that way the Lord scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city. That is why the city is called Babel, because that is where the Lord confused the people with different languages. In the in this way, he scattered them all over the world. Now pause for a moment. What's so wrong with this, right? What what is what is the problem with everybody wanting to be together? Well, first of all, God told them to fill the earth. So they were already not obeying God. And then secondly, they were once again trying to find their own way to immortality, trying to find their own way to greatness, trying to edge God out all over again. And once again, God is saying, that is not what we're trying to do here. We're supposed to be in relationship together. And what they're doing is, is they are yet again uniting against me. And it's like the flood's gonna, you know, the flood situation, God said never do a flood again, but the flood situation is going to happen again. So God in his sovereignty said, We got to divide these guys so they will do what I told them to do, which is spread out again. But God still wanted to bring salvation to the people, and so he has tried with Adam and Eve, and it didn't work. Then he's tried with Noah, and that's not working. So now instead of saying we're gonna try with the whole world, let's start with a family. Let's start with one guy, and this is where we get Abraham, who at first is named Abram, and this is where he comes into the scene. So here we go. Genesis chapter 11, verse 10 says this. This is the account of Shem's family. Remember this, one of Noah's sons. Two years after the great flood, Shem was 100 years old and he became the father of Arphaxid. After the birth of Arfaxid, Shem lived another 500 years and had sons and daughters. When Arphaxid was thirty-five years old, he became the father of Shela. After the birth of Sheila, Arphaxid lived four hundred and three years and he had other sons and daughters. She law thirty years old and he became the father of Eber. After the birth of Eber, Shelah lived another four hundred and three years and he had other sons and daughters. When Eber was thirty-four years old, he became the father of Peleg. After the birth of Peleg, Eber lived another four hundred and thirty years and had other sons and daughters. When Peleg was thirty years old, he became the father of Reu. After the birth of Reu, Peleg lived another two hundred and nine years, and he had other sons and daughters. When Reyu was thirty-two years old, he became the father of Serug. After the birth of Serug, Rayu lived another two hundred and seven years and had other sons and daughters. When Serug was thirty years old, he became the father of Nahor. After the birth of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years, and he had other sons and daughters. When Nahor was twenty nine years old, he became the father of Terah. After the birth of Terah, Nahor lived another one hundred and nineteen years, had other sons and daughters. After Terah was seventy years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Now pause for just a second. Notice how the age of the people is going down, down, down, down. And remember, God already had prophesied this when he said that man's years shall be as 120, and so it is a process of getting them down, down, down. Alright, verse 27. This is the account of Terai's family. Terai was the father of Abram, Nahor, Haran, and Haran was the father of Lot. But Haran died in Ur of the Chaldines and the land of his birth while his father Terai was still living. Meanwhile, Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai. The name of Nahor's wife was Malchi. Malki was the sister of Ekach, where whose daughters were Nahor's brother Haran. But Sarai was unable to become pregnant and had no children. One day Terai took his son Abram, his daughter-in-law Sarai, and his sons Abram's his son Abram's wife, and his grandson Lot, his son Haran's child, and moved away from Ur, from the Chaldeans. He was headed to the land of Canaan, but they stopped at Haran and settled there. Terrah lived for 205 years and died while still in Haran. Now, there's a lot of things going on here, but I do want to uh draw your attention to something that's very interesting. Notice that we're going to find out tomorrow that God calls Abraham to leave the Earl of the Chaldines and to go where he called him and actually told him to go to the place that is called Canaan. Isn't it interesting? And we don't really talk about this very much, but isn't it interesting that he was not the first person to do this? That actually God called Terah, it appears, God called Terah, Abram's father, to do this. Or for some reason he left, but he didn't get there all the way. He got a little further away and he stopped and he didn't make it. And there are some scholars who wonder if actually God had intended on Terah and all that being part of the process, but something happened and Terah did not finish the journey. And so then God eventually called Abram himself. We don't know that. That's all speculation. But it's just an interesting thing to think about when you look at how God had already started this process with Abram's dad, but something happened and God called Abram instead. But let's look at the bottom line of this, and that is that is this God is constantly after relationship with us. You see how he started in the Garden of Eden, and then as things went downhill, he started over again with Noah, and then now we have a situation where once again the people are not responding to him. Instead, they're they're uniting, doing their own thing, and God confuses that to scatter them out, and now he is going all the way down to Abram. God is constantly looking for relationship with his people. You could look at the Bible as one constant pursuit of God to re-establish the relationship that was lost in the Garden of Eden. What does that mean to us today? That means God loves you. God is interested in a relationship with you. Do you know what your your God's plan for your life is? Is to know God and then to make him known to his other lost children. To know God and to make him known. Success is not about what you achieve, it's about who you become. And the greatest thing that you and I can become is a man or a woman of God who's pursuing God with our life and then using the gifts, talents, and abilities he has given us to tell other people about this lost relationship. You could really sum it up into that. And you can see, and as we're going to continue looking the Bible all the way back from the beginning, the number one thing on God's heart is to have a relationship with you and with me. It's pretty powerful when you think about it. So here's my question for you. Something for you to think about as you go throughout the rest of your day, and that is this. What does it look like in your life when it comes to your relationship with God? Do you find yourself in a business relationship with God? God, do you do this, I'll do this, and we'll we'll we'll get the business done. Do you think of it as kind of long-lost pen pals? You know, you you talk to each other on rare occasions. Or is is he what David would call in the book of Psalms the lover of your soul? Your soulmate, your best friend. I think that's what God wants. If that's not the case, my prayer for you would be that you would take time today and you would pray and ask God, God, will you show me the way to come back to that closeness with you? Because that's what God's after. This whole thing is about getting us back into relationship with him. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and that you're for us. Thank you, God, that in this life there are so many things that want to distract us, want to pull us away from you. But you're always drawing us back to yourself. I pray today, God, that you'll open our eyes to see how good you are, and also open our eyes to see in ways that we have been drawn away. Bring us back to you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Anyway, what God's Word says in Genesis 1 1. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And if that's possible, anything is possible. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 12.
