The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
1 Thessalonians 01 Round Two: Your Testimony Is Your Ministry
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your life story might be the clearest sermon you ever preach. We open 1 Thessalonians with Pastor Brandon and watch Paul celebrate a young church whose faith becomes so visible that it “rings out” across an entire region, even while they’re facing real suffering and pressure. Their transformation isn’t just talk. They turn from idols, cling to the living God, and keep an enduring hope that changes how other believers think about following Jesus.
We also tackle one of the biggest themes in 1 Thessalonians: the second coming of Christ. End times debates can get complicated fast, but we keep the focus where Paul keeps it, on encouragement. We talk through why prophecy can be fascinating without becoming an obsession, and why our confidence doesn’t rest on perfect timelines but on the trustworthiness of Jesus. If you’ve ever felt anxious reading apocalyptic passages or confused by eschatology, this conversation aims to replace fear with steady, grounded hope.
Then we land on the most practical takeaway: your testimony is your ministry. Whether your story feels messy or “not dramatic enough,” God can use it to reach the exact people around you who need to hear about rescue, renewal, and grace. We close with a prayer and a theme verse that sets the tone for the whole book: choose joy, keep praying, and practice gratitude in every circumstance.

Why Paul Writes 1 Thessalonians
SPEAKER_00much. Well, First Thessalonians is a very interesting book. And not just because it's one of the hardest books in the Bible to pronounce. Okay. You can try it and then try spelling it. Okay. First Thessalonians, all right. Very interesting. We'll give a little bit of background about this, and we're going to enjoy this because it's such a wonderful, wonderful book. But first of all, to say it was written by the Apostle Paul. The church in Thessalonica, which is the city that this was from, they actually, this was a church that was started by Paul, but he probably only stayed there for just a few months, maybe three or four months, as he was going on his second missionary journey. He had he went on his long missionary journey, came home, and then he wanted to go back out again and check on the different churches and different things. And when he goes out, he goes to this small town called Thessalonica. And while he's there, he ends up staying for a few months. He starts a church, puts some leaders over them, and he leaves. And so after he leaves, though, he gets worried about them because he'd already been having some of these problems with the city of Galatia, where he eventually writes the book of Galatians back to, because false teachers, especially Judaizers, would come right after him and start distorting a lot of what he had said and kind of changing stuff up and just confusing people. And so Paul sends Timothy, that's kind of his protege, his right-hand man. He sends Timothy back to go, hey, are they okay? And that's where we end up finding this later because Timothy comes back and he's like, no, they're good. There are some false teachers that are getting them a little confused about Jesus and this kind of stuff. But other than that, they're doing really good. And so in response to this, Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, writes what we now have as 1 Thessalonians, where he is correcting some misunderstandings that they have, but also just celebrating that they are doing so well in the kingdom
Second Coming Basics Without Obsession
SPEAKER_00of God. And so he's clearing these things up. He's also writing a little bit about holy living, what that looks like. And he's also talking about something that's going to come up more and more as we get closer and closer to the book of Revelation, which is the last part of the New Testament. And so the overall theme of 1 Thessalonians is that be encouraged, Jesus is coming. Be encouraged, Jesus is coming. Now, there's a lot of different faith traditions under the big umbrella of Christianity. There's a lot of people that believe a lot of different things, but there's a few things that are just essential that everybody holds to, that's considered to be essential doctrines if you are going to be a follower of Christ. And people have put them into things called the Apostles' Creed and stuff like that. But if you want to kind of figure out one of them is that truth is knowable, because that's like where everything starts. If you can't know truth, then none of this works, right? The other one is that there's a trinity, Father, Son, and Spirit, one in essence, three in person, that Jesus is the Son of God, because otherwise John 3.16 doesn't work, that he came and he died for our sins. We were in sin. The Bible is the divinely inspired word of God, that salvation is faith alone and Christ alone, by grace alone. And then there is a second coming of Christ one day to bring to get the saved and judge the condemned, right? But there's a second coming of Christ. That's a lot of those things. You can go back and look at those. But the one I'm trying to get to is that most all Orthodox, that means like like good faith traditions, all believe in a second coming of Christ. Now, there is a lot of ways that they divide that up. Some people believe that there is a rapture of the church, then a seven year of tribulation, and then a second coming of Christ. Some people believe that there is like seven years of tribulation, and then right in the middle, there's a rapture of the church, and then at the end of seven years, there is a second coming. Some people believe there is a seven years of tribulation, and then there is just a second coming, no rapture. And then some people believe that there is no, there is no uh tribulation, but the rapture and the second coming are the same thing, and that happens. However, that works for you. The bottom line is there is a second coming. And people ask me all the time, Pastor, what are you? Are you are you in? And there's a lot of these really uh fancy words for what's called the study of the end time, eschatology. So it's like, are you pre-mill, pre-trib, all this kind of stuff? Can I tell you? I have what I call pan theology, which means it'll all pan out in the end. And I mean that because I have studied end times doctrine and eschatology for a long time. And can I be honest with you and tell you, the more I studied it, the more confused I got. Because I think that prophecy is one of those things that we don't know it's happened until after it's already happened. Look at the New Testament. The Bible said that the Pharisees and Sadducees and scribes and Pharisees, they could tell you all about where the Messiah was supposed to be born. When you look in Matthew chapter two, the Bible said that when the the what we call them, the wise men from the east, they came and said, Where's the king of the Jews going to be born? They said, in Bethlehem. We have all the prophecies, we know all about it. Yet they didn't recognize Jesus had come until after he had already come. And then afterward, they were like, oh, that's how that works. Can I be honest with you? As I get older, I'm starting to look at Bible prophecy like that, going, hey, I love it. I love that we study it. I think it's really cool, really interesting. But I just trust the Lord. And I got a pretty good idea that we're not gonna know what's happened until after it's happened and we look back and we go, hey, there it was. So I want to encourage you as we get into First Thessalonians, because every chapter it's gonna talk about the coming of Christ. I want to encourage you as we get closer and closer to the book of Revelation and the book of Daniel, and it's called apocalyptic literature, to not get obsessed with what's gonna happen in the future. Be encouraged by who's already in the future. And it's Jesus. Jesus sits outside of time. He sees time like a book from one end to the other. So that means, if you can get your head around this, that he can go all the way to the front and be with Adam and Eve in the garden and go all the way to the end and be with us in what we would call the kingdom reign of Christ at the end of all time. So he's already in the future. So it's interesting. Love studying it, love studying the kind of stuff, think it's great, but don't put your hope in prophecy. Put your hope in Jesus. Be encouraged that whatever he does, he is trustworthy. And so I don't know how he's gonna come. I just know that he is. God's word is clear. Jesus is going to come again. We just don't know exactly when and where. We just know that he is. And that's what Paul was trying to fix, inspired by the Holy Spirit. And so I think 1 Thessalonians is still so very relevant, of course, today, because there's still so many people that get discouraged. Is Jesus gonna come now? Is he gonna come then? Is there gonna be a rapture? Is it gonna be a second coming? And Paul's going, here's the thing, focus on Jesus. Not always about that, but focus on Jesus and trust that when he comes, it's gonna be awesome. So be encouraged. And so we're gonna read this together over the next few days. There's only just a few chapters, but as we read it, we're gonna be encouraged, not nervous, but excited, not discouraged, because we trust in the one who's already in
Reading 1 Thessalonians Chapter One
SPEAKER_00the future. You ready? Here we go. First Thessalonians chapter one, verse one says this this is a letter from Paul, Silas, and Timothy. We are writing to the church in Thessalonica, to you who belong to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. May God give you grace and peace. We always thank God for you all and pray for you constantly. As we pray to our God and Father about you, we think of your faithful work, your loving deeds, and the enduring hope that you have because of our Lord Jesus Christ. We know, dear brothers and sisters, that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own people. For when he brought you the good news, it is not only with words, but also with power. For the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true, and you know that our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you. So you received this message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord. And as a result, you have become an example to all the believers in Greece throughout both Macedonia and Archaia. And now, with the word of the Lord, now the word of the Lord is ringing out from you to people everywhere, even beyond Macedonia and Achaia. For wherever you go, we find people, wherever we go, we find people telling us about your faith in God. We don't need to tell them about it, for they keep talking about the wonderful welcome you gave us and how you turned away from the idols to serve the living and true God. And they speak of how you are looking forward to the coming of God's Son from heaven. There's about Jesus coming, Jesus, whom God raised from the dead, and he is the one who has rescued us from the terrors of the coming judgment.
Your Testimony Becomes Your Ministry
SPEAKER_00Wow. Do you notice the theme in chapter one where Paul is saying, Man, your testimony has become a ministry to everyone. When people hear about how you turned from your idols and how it costs you something, you had to turn away from what you'd always known and turned away from all these other things, and you turned toward Jesus. It cost you. It wasn't an easy thing, but man, you are faithful and you turn toward him. And it has been an encouragement to me. And I've even heard of people that don't, that you don't know, but they've heard about you, and it's encouraged them. And he's like, and now we're so excited and we're encouraged because of the coming of our Lord Jesus. And so what do we take away from this? First of all, don't forget what I said, because this we're gonna come up to it. It's gonna talk about the coming of Jesus in every chapter. We believe at Real Life Church, and I hope you believe, that Jesus is coming again. And we could get into wonderfully long debates on what exactly that's gonna look like. And I would love to have those. But for the purpose of this discussion, I'm just glad he's coming. So I would, however you want to slice it, I've I have that pan theology. It's all gonna pan out in the end. And my joy is I'm encouraged that my Jesus, your Jesus is coming again. And here's the thing I also want you to get out of this is that your testimony is your ministry. And I tell you, I've talked to people who have amazing stories about how God did amazing things in their life, and they're ashamed to tell their story because they're ashamed that it will make them look bad, make God look bad, make other people look bad. I've known people who, you know, their story isn't about, you know, they went and joined this gang or they went over there, but their story is still amazing and it's powerful because it's about how God worked on their heart and worked them through these different things, and they're ashamed because they don't think they have a story. Can I tell you, your story, your testimony is your ministry. I believe it's a fact that God has put people around you right now that, yes, maybe there are other people that wouldn't understand your story, but there are people that God has put in your life that will understand. I tell you, my story is about growing up in church with a loving father who loved me and raised me to know who God was. My dad was a pastor. I knew all about God, but that doesn't change anything because until I learned who God was for myself and I started reading God's word for myself, it was all a bunch of words. But then one day I trusted Jesus for my salvation and it changed my life. There are some people who don't understand that story. There's other people who know exactly what I'm talking about because they grew up knowing all about who God was, but never experienced God for themselves. Can I tell you? Your story is your ministry. Don't be ashamed of your story. Now that doesn't mean you got to tell every detail and all that kind of stuff, but what about the part where you didn't know who Jesus was and about how it hurt a whole lot? And then when you just about gave up on yourself, Jesus came in and he rescued you. I love that phrase at the end of that. He is the one who has rescued us. And I tell you, never be ashamed of telling people about your rescue, about how you were drowning, and Jesus rescued you. Your testimony is your ministry.
Prayer, Theme Verse, And Farewell
SPEAKER_00Let's pray together. God, thank you so much. And then we have an enduring hope. The number one hope is the greatest miracle we could ever hope for. We've already received. But on top of that, you work on us, you deliver us of all of our pain, and it's a lifelong journey. And then one day, either we die from this life and we go be with you in eternity, or one day we may have the joy of being alive when you come again. We don't know when that's gonna be, but we trust you that it will be. And I pray that we will be encouraged in our hearts to realize you are for us and you are with us more than we can imagine. And we celebrate that today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, the theme verse for this particular book of the Bible, and as you can tell, this is gonna be an interesting book. I'm excited to get deeper into it together, but the theme verse for this one is gonna be 1 Thessalonians 5, 16 through 18 that says this always be joyful, never stop praying, be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. God's will for you is to be joyful, to never stop getting to know him, never stop praying, and to be thankful in all circumstances. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for First Thessalonians chapter two.
