Psalm 34: When God Rescues Us

David’s rescue story in Psalm 34 is not polished or predictable and that’s exactly why it’s so comforting. He’s on the run from Saul, makes a risky move, and ends up standing in front of an enemy king while holding the sword that made him famous. With no obvious way out, he does something desperate, survives, and later turns that chaotic moment into a song of praise. If you’ve ever looked back on a decision and thought, “That should’ve ended so badly,” you’ll recognize the heartbeat of this passage.

We read through Psalm 34 and sit with its most memorable lines: “I will praise the Lord at all times,” “Taste and see that the Lord is good,” and the promise that God is close to the brokenhearted. Okay, I don't want to put this on you, but I'm gonna put this on me. Do you ever have a time when you didn't really have a good plan, but God made it work out just fine? You know what I mean? It was it was not really a great plan, but God made it work out. I don't even have the, we don't, we are not gonna take the time to tell you how many times I started to do something only to go, this is not a great plan. This should fail miserably. But then God made it work out. Well, David definitely did this, and the Lord worked it out. And he ends up writing a song about how God is faithful. And I just can't help but think about maybe there was like a tagline to go, God is faithful when I did something kind of stupid. So we're gonna get into all that in just a second. Psalms As The Soundtrack For Life

we find. Well, if you've been with us over the past several days, we are talking about the book of Psalms, which is the soundtrack for life. And it is a collection of the greatest hits of the people of God from the time of Moses all the way to the time of Malachi. And a lot of these are written by David. And that's great because David experienced some of the highest highs and some of the lowest lows and everything in between. And it is a collection of not just his songs, but all these songs that they teach us how to celebrate with the good things of life, how to celebrate through the bad things of life, and everything in between. And this is one of those where, like I was telling you at the very beginning, there's been so many times in my life when I had a plan that when I look back at it, I'm like, that was the dumbest. God, why did you help me with this? And it was because my intentions were good, but it shouldn't have been helped. Well, this is exactly what happens to David. David writes this song after he did something that is debatable on whether it was smart or not. This is what happened.

David’s Risky Escape In Gath

So when he is fleeing from King Saul, because you know David's been anointed king. The problem is that they already have a king and his name is Saul. And so Saul was wanting to kill David, so he has to flee. Well, as he is in the process of fleeing, he goes to the tabernacle and he needs something to fight with. And they had taken the sword of Goliath. When David had killed Goliath, they had taken the sword of Goliath to the tabernacle, and now he is there, and he basically asks for it back. And he's like, hey, I'm gonna need this. Well, he goes to Gath, where that's where you know Goliath was from. And when he goes there, he ends up being put in front of Abimelech, their king. And Abimelech is is he goes before him because they see the sword of Goliath and they're saying, This is the guy who killed Goliath. And so he's in trouble because they're wanting to, you know, maybe wreak vengeance on him. And he's in front of them now and he's gotta figure out what he's gonna do. And so this is so. What would you do if you beat up the toughest guy in the city, and then the mayor calls you in and he's wanting to get you back because you killed the pride of their city, you know, that kind of thing? Well, David decides, I don't know what else to do. So he acts like he's crazy. He starts slobbering all over himself, he starts acting like he is insane. And instead of them killing him, they're like, Well, this guy's crazy. So either killing Goliath made him go crazy, which means he's punished enough, or he didn't really kill Goliath, he's just crazy. Either way, get him out of here. And so they kick David out because they think he's crazy and he he lives. And can I tell you that probably wasn't the brightest idea to even take the sword of Goliath into the city where Goliath was from, but once he did, he had to find a way out of it. And so, how many times in our life have we got ourselves into a mess and God helps us get out of it? Well, David is celebrating this moment, and he

says it with this Psalm. Psalm 34, verse 20 says this I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises, I will boast only in the Lord, let all who are helpless take heart. Come, let us tell of the Lord's greatness, let us exalt his name together. I prayed to the Lord and He answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy. No shadow of shame will darken their faces. In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened. He saved me from all my troubles, for the angel of the Lord is a guard, and he surrounds and defends all who fear him. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, what joys for those who take refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you his godly people, for those who fear him will have all they need. Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those who trust in the Lord will lack no good thing. Come, my children, and listen to me, and I will teach you to fear the Lord. Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous? Then keep your tongue from speaking evil, and your lips from telling lies. Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace and work to maintain it. The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, his ears are open to their cries for help. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil. He will erase their memory from the earth. The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help, and he rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to rescue each time, for the Lord protects the bones of the righteous. Not one of them is broken. Calamity will surely destroy the wicked, but those who hate the righteous will be punished. But the Lord will redeem those who serve him. No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

Brokenhearted Hope And Daily Confidence

So David isn't just speaking of the moment when he acted crazy and God got him out of it, but he's saying all the things that led me up to this. I was doing the right thing. I wasn't trying to get myself into this trouble, but trouble came for me. But thank goodness, God rescues me. And I think sometimes we, once again, can get so wrapped up in how bad things are that we forget that if we're still here, that means God's not giving up on us. That yes, there's bad things. When David would have written this, Saul's still after him. He's still got to figure out how he's gonna live, how he's gonna protect his family, how he's gonna do all this. He's got all this going on, but in the middle of his trouble, he also realizes that there's pockets of goodness, that God has been with me this whole time. And we fast forward it, we realize that through all the other dangers that David is gonna face, God never leaves him one time. God is always with him. What would our lives look like right now if we could see into the future and realize that every time we were gonna face trouble, God was always gonna be with us. That's one of the things that I admire so much. If you ever have a chance to talk to someone who's been a Christian for a long time, you know, and they're in their 70s or 80s, and they've been a Christian since they were, you know, young, you listen to them tell their stories, and they they will some at some point they will say something to the effect of, if I had just known that no matter what I was gonna face, God was always gonna be with me, I'd have had a lot more peace. I've heard that so many times. I've heard so many people say, after a certain point, you just realize God's gonna be faithful, that I'm gonna do my best and I'm gonna find a way to get myself into trouble. But God's always gonna be faithful. What would happen in our lives if we realized no matter what trouble finds us, God's always gonna rescue us? I think we would live our day with just a little bit more confidence, just a little bit more joy, because we know now that doesn't mean we come asking for problems, you know, but sometimes problems find us. And when they do, all will fall to the power of the

name of Jesus. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and you're for us, and thank you that you show us in so many ways that you are good and that your love endures forever. I pray today you'll open our eyes to see you more clearly. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, Psalm 34, verse 1 says this. Say with me, I will bless the Lord at all times.
