Psalm 37: The Slow Burn Of Righteousness

Some of the most discouraging moments in faith come when you’re trying to do the right thing and it still feels like you’re falling behind. Today we sit with Psalm 37 and name what many of us quietly wrestle with: the wicked can look like they’re winning, and righteousness can feel like a slow burn. I talk through why God’s work in us rarely moves at the pace of our culture, and why integrity, goodness, and spiritual formation take time by design. 

Psalm 37 offers a steady rhythm for anxious hearts: trust in the Lord and do good, commit your work to God, be still, and wait patiently. We read David’s wisdom with a long view, holding his promise that what fades fast isn’t worth chasing, and what lasts is worth waiting for. We also touch the practical fight against anger and envy, and how patient faith becomes a kind of strength when life gets hard.

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 37. And today's title is The Slow Burn of Righteousness. Do you know one of the things that is becoming more and more evident in our culture is as a culture, it seems like we are just moving faster and faster. I mean, you know that you are impatient when the microwave is too slow. You know what I mean? When just even 50 years ago, people, it would take them hours to cook a meal over a stove. Now we can take seconds in a microwave. And when we're yelling at the microwave, we're moving a little fast, right? But the thing is, is the Bible does not play by common rules. And the principles of righteousness, of goodness, of integrity, they also don't play by, you know, current rules. They play by the rules of development and formation. And those things just simply take time. And today's psalm is really good because it lets us know that's not a new thing. It lets us know that even back during the time of David, folks be getting impatient with this slow burn of God's formation in our lives. And so if you've ever gotten just a little impatient about the fact that God seems to take a lifetime to do a lifetime of work in us, this psalm is for you. Okay. So we're going to get into it

Psalms As A Soundtrack For Life

Well, if you've been with us over the past several days, we are going through what we're calling a soundtrack for life. And it is the book of Psalms, which is actually five books of Psalms. And it's a collection of the greatest songs of the people of God, from Moses all the way to Malachi. It is songs for every occasion of life, not just events and all that stuff, but also processing, it seems like almost every single major event that we're going to face. Times of success and victory, times of death and difficulty and everything in between. And today's is a psalm of David, and it was written likely toward the end of his life, and it's called a wisdom psalm. And we're not going to see it in the New Living Translation we're going to read today, but this is actually an acrostic. And what that means is every two verses represent a different letter in the alphabet of the Hebrew alphabet. So you go Aleph, Bet, Gimel, Dalit, all the way through to Omega, not Omega, but Tav. And we're going to go through those. And I won't have those for you, but if you look at an older translation, you're going to see those. And it is David just singing a song about how righteousness just simply takes time. It just takes time to grow in the things of God, even though it's going to look like everything else is prospering but you. But it's the long obedience in the same direction that really wins in the end. So we'll get into all in just a second, but let's read God's word

Psalm 37 Read Aloud

today. Psalm 37, verse 1 says this Don't worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. For like grass they will soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart's desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord, trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocent innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the nonday sun. Be still in the presence of the Lord and wait patiently for him to act. Don't worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes. Stop being angry. Turn from your rage. Do not lose your temper, it only leads to harm. For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the Lord will possess the land. Soon the wicked will disappear. Though you look for them, they will be gone. The lowly will possess the land and will live in peace and prosperity. The wicked plot against the godly, they snarl at them in defiance. But the Lord just laughs, for he sees their day of judgment coming. The wicked draw their swords and string their bows to kill the poor and the oppressed, to slaughter those who do right. But their swords will stab their own hearts, their bows will be broken. It is better to be godly and have a little than to be evil and rich. For the strength of the wicked will be shattered, but the Lord takes care of the godly. Day by day the Lord takes care of the innocent, and they will receive an inheritance that lasts forever. They will not be disgraced in hard times, even famine, even in famine they will have more than enough, but the wicked will die. The Lord's enemies are like flowers in a field, they will disappear like smoke. The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers. Those the Lord blesses will prosper possess the land, but those he curses will die. The Lord directs the steps of the godly, he delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord upholds them by the hand. The Lord holds them by the hand, for once I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread. The godly always give generous loans to others, and their children are a blessing. Turn from evil and do good, and you will live in the land forever. For the Lord loves justice, and he will never abandon the godly. He will keep them safe forever, but the children of the wicked will die. The godly will possess the land and will live there forever. The godly offer good counsel and they teach right from wrong. They have made God's law their own. They will never slip from his path. The wicked wait and ambush for the godly, looking for an excuse to kill them. But the Lord will not let the wicked succeed, or let the godly be condemned when they put on or put on trial. Put your hope in the Lord, travel steadily along his path, and he will honor you by giving you the land, and you will see the wicked destroyed. I have seen the wicked and ruthless people flourishing like trees in its native soil, but when I looked again, they were gone. Though I searched for them, I could not find them. Look at those who are honest and do good, for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace, but the rebellious will be destroyed, they have no future. The Lord rescues the godly, and he is their fortress of trouble. The Lord helps them, rescuing them from the wicked, he saves them, and they find shelter in him.

Comparison, Social Media, And Envy

Do you know this psalm reminds us of something that we already know? Do you know if there's one thing that I think in our culture we have talked about enough that I would say most of us have a head knowledge of, and that is it is absolutely pointless to compare ourselves to others. We we've all heard the phrase that it is absolutely pointless to compare our lives to anybody we see on social media, because if you're honest, you never post your real life on social media. Would you agree? You you don't post just a normal day. You don't post that nothing really happened that day or, you know, any of that. You post the good things when you go on vacation, when you get the promotion, when your kid wins an award, when you win an award, that's what you post, right? You don't post the bad days. I mean, I think it would be hilarious if somebody had a post every day with just themselves going, yep, just another day. You know, most people don't do that, right? However, when we look at other people's stuff on social media, we think that's their everyday when it's really not. It's their highlight reels. And we know this, yet we still do this. And the great news is we're not the first generation to do that. All the way back during the time of David, he is saying, Man, I have lived long enough to watch people, and in certain seasons of their life, I was envious. I looked at them and it seemed like everything they were doing was working. I think it seemed like everything they were doing was great. Only with time did I realize it wasn't gonna last, it wasn't gonna succeed. All those bad things they were doing to get ahead destroyed them in the end. Can I tell you the same is true for us? I'm gonna make you a promise that that you're gonna know is true, but neither one of us like. And here it is. When you live for God, when you live righteously, you will grow slower than people who don't. It will at least appear that way. It will appear as though people who do wrong, people who cut corners, people who you know live by their emotions rather than the truth of God, it will appear as though they get further faster. But here's the deal play it forward. Play it forward just one year, two years, five years, over and over and over again. If you build your house on sand, when storms come, it will be destroyed. And what you do when you build your life on God, even though it's slower, it's more methodical, and it takes longer, it's solid. And what I've seen so many times in my life is I have seen people who I've seen two different people. I've seen one person who's building their life on the Lord and one person who is building their life on everything else. And for a little while, it looks like the one building their life on everything else is getting further, faster. To the point that, you know, you almost want to say, hey, man, man of God, woman of God, you're getting behind. Try a little more, you know, but you don't want to do that because when the first major storm occurs, you can tell what was important the whole time. The one who had their life built on God, they're there. They experience the same hardship, they have the same heartache, but they're not destroyed. But then with the slightest wind, slightest rain, that person who built their life on sand is absolutely destroyed. So here's the promise from God's word. Trust the Lord. Trust that God's way is the best way. Even if it takes longer, even if it looks like you're not getting ahead, all that kind of stuff. It's not about what you achieve, it's about who you become. Because in becoming a man or woman of God, you are setting yourself up for a bright future. And what's even more amazing is setting the sting the standard for all those who will come after

you. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you see us and you know us. And Lord, you know that in every generation we're gonna deal with this trap of comparison. Even during the time of David, he had to address this. I pray, God, you will help us find our home in you and to realize that our joy comes from you. And that in the end, God, you make all things new and you make all things right. We celebrate you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Well, say it with me. God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, it says, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you.
