Psalm 38: When Sin Weights You Down
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Sin has a way of changing weight. What felt “small” while it was happening can feel like a soaked jacket the moment you step out of the storm, heavy, cold, and impossible to ignore. We open Psalm 38 and walk through David’s brutally honest prayer as he describes guilt, pain, and the fear that his failure is finally catching up to him. If you’ve ever felt crushed by past sin or stuck in a present pattern you hate, this psalm gives you words and a way forward.
We read Psalm 38 aloud and slow down on the details: the burden of guilt, the emotional toll, the isolation when friends stand at a distance, and the pressure of enemies who want to use your weakness against you. Along the way, we connect Psalms to real life as the “soundtrack” of every season, including the seasons where you feel exposed, ashamed, or spiritually exhausted. This is practical Bible teaching for anyone searching for clarity on confession, repentance, and God’s mercy.
Then we draw a bright line between conviction and condemnation. Condemnation says, “Hide, you’re hopeless, God doesn’t want you.” Conviction says, “Come closer, confess quickly, let Jesus wash this away.” That difference is not semantics, it’s the direction your next step takes. We also share a simple parent-and-child story that captures God’s heart: He warns because He loves, and when you come running back hurt and humbled, He meets you with forgiveness and healing, not rejection.
If Psalm 38 sounds like your inner life lately, press play and let it guide you back toward freedom. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs hope, and leave a five-star review so more people can find the show.

When Sin Starts To Weigh
SPEAKER_01Well hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 38. And today's title is When Sin Weighs You Down. When Sin Weighs You Down. I don't know if you've ever done this before, but if you ever went and, you know, when my girls were little, they love to dance in the rain, love to do that kind of stuff. And my wife had much more sense than I did. And so she would say, No, you can go dance in the rain. I'm gonna stay here with the towels, right? Well, I didn't have that much sense. And so I said, I'll dance in the rain with you. And so I would go out there and we'd all dance and have fun. And I'd, you know, they they put on their bathing suits and I was just there in my regular clothes. And then when they were done, they would go and dry off. And then I would be in there. But what thought, what was simple at first, all of a sudden now was weighing on me. You know, these things that seemed light at the time, t-shirt, shorts, whatever, all of a sudden felt 10 times heavier than normally did. And if I was having to wait on my wife to go get a towel for me or whatever, I'd just be walking around. And once I got out of the rain, it wasn't that much fun anymore, right? Well, many times we can feel like that when it comes to other areas of our life that are not so good, such as sin. Let's be honest and say that in the moment, sin is fun. It it's fun for a little while. But then when we get out of the situation we're in, all of a sudden we realize, man, I feel so much heavier than I did. These things that I thought was fun, I thought was light, I didn't really even notice at the time, now is weighing me down so much more. Well, if you ever felt that way, the good news is you're not alone and you're not the first. Other people have as well. And God's word has a song for us that helps us understand how to confront sin that weighs us down and what to do with

Psalms As The Soundtrack Of Life
SPEAKER_01find. Well, we've been talking about this idea that the book of Psalms is actually five books of songs that we're calling the soundtrack of life. And it is the greatest hits collection of the people of God, from the time of Moses all the way to the time of Malachi. And it is how the people of God are processing doing life with God. And we talked about how the book of Proverbs, which we're going to read next, is all about how to do life with one another. But the book of Psalms is all about how to do life with God, how to figure out how to do this life and just process through the different seasons. And so the book of Psalms has got, you know, songs about joy and peace and songs for road trips, songs for weddings, but also songs about when things aren't going well. And that's what today's Psalm is all about. Written by David, it is a time of asking God to remember him during a time when he feels his sin weighing down on him. And have you ever had that time in your life when you are either you are either crushed because of the sin of your past or crushed because of the sin of your present. Well, no matter what that looks like for you, David has been there too. And in spite of the Holy Spirit, he is processing what to do with this. And so let's read this together, see if you can kind of identify with it, and then we'll see what God's Word says for us to do
Reading Psalm 38 Aloud
SPEAKER_01about it. So if you're ready, here we go. Psalm 38, verse 1 says this Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage. Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me. Because of your anger, my whole body is sick. My health is broken because of my sins. My guilt overwhelms me. It is a burden too heavy to bear. My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins. I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief. A raging fever burns within me, and my heart is broken. I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart. You know that I long for, Lord. You hear my every sigh. My heart beats wildly, and my strength fails. I am going blind. My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance. Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery, but I am deaf to their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak. I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply. For I am waiting for you, O Lord, and you must answer me, O Lord, my God. I prayed, don't let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall. I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain. But I confess my sins. I am deeply sorry for what I have done. I have many aggressive enemies, and they hate me without reason. They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good. Do not abandon me, O Lord. Do not stand at a distance, O my God. Come quickly to help me, O Lord, my Savior.
Conviction Versus Condemnation
SPEAKER_01You ever been there? You ever been there in one of two moments? Either number one, there's sin, there's something you've done, and you feel absolutely terrible about it. Or you have people in your life who are trying to make you feel terrible for something you didn't do. Either way is terrible. Now let me give you the good news and then the even better news. When it comes to sin, the good news is the fact that you feel bad about it, the fact that you feel conviction is a good thing. That means the Holy Spirit is drawing you to himself. See, there's a difference between conviction and condemnation. You know, the Bible says in Romans 8, verse 1, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. And here's the difference conviction draws you to the Lord, condemnation draws you away from the Lord. Here's the difference. Let's say, God forbid, let's say that that you look at pornography. And when you are finished looking at the pornography, if there's a feeling inside of you that says, man, look at you, you're just terrible. You're horrible. You ought to be ashamed. Man, you shouldn't go to church. You shouldn't go to life group. You shouldn't pray and talk to God. God don't want to talk to you. You should just run and hide. That's called condemnation. That is not from the Lord. Why in the world would Jesus be born, die on a cross, rise again to save you, only to then condemn you and make you feel shame? That doesn't make any sense. That's not from the Lord. Here's the difference. Let's say you look at pornography. When you're done, you feel your heart, you feel your heart stirred, and you and you feel inside of yourself, oh, you shouldn't have done that. That hurt you and that hurt the heart of God. We should run to God. We should run toward him right now, confess our sin to him. Maybe he will be gracious, maybe he will be good. Whatever we do, let's not waste any time. Let's get to the presence of God as fast as we can and let's get this washed away by the blood of Jesus. That's conviction. Condemnation draws you away from God. Conviction draws you toward the Lord. That's the good news. Is the fact that you feel bad reminds you that God can do something about it. Here's the best news. He is longing to do something about it. Because that brokenness is something he wants to fix. That hurt, that pain, that grief, that difficulty, that is something he wants to heal.
Run To God For Forgiveness
SPEAKER_01So what do we do when we feel weighed down by sin? We run into the presence of God. We run to him and we tell the Lord, I'm sorry, will you help me? It reminds me of one time, and I'm not gonna out which one of my daughters did this, but I remember one time I told one of my little girls, I told her to stop playing with the door. She was a teenager and she kept wanting to slam the door, slam the door. And I didn't care about her slamming the door. She wasn't gonna hurt the door, right? I was, I told her, I said, hey, listen, because she was slamming it with her hand almost in the door. And I told her, I said, listen, you don't need to slam the door because you're gonna you're gonna put your hand in the door. It's gonna hurt. And she was looking at me, okay, daddy. And then as soon as I left, I could hear her slamming the door, you know. And so I went back again and I tried to tell her, okay, daddy. And then I mean, something about little little kids, they have no idea that sound travels. You know what I mean? And so I was about five steps away and I heard her slamming the door. And so I thought, huh, well, there's a way to learn a lesson here, you know. And so I I let her go for a second, and then all of a sudden I heard one slam that sounded a little different, and then I heard just crying, you know. And it was something else because all of a sudden, you know, she's crying and she comes running, daddy, daddy, daddy. And so, what happened? And she's like, I hurt myself. You know, it's like, well, well, how did you hurt yourself? I I slam my hand in the door. Okay. Well, let me see. It's gonna be okay, baby. It's gonna be okay, you know. And then I make sure she was okay. And of course she was fine. Her hand wasn't even red, you know. And then I said, Okay, here's here's the thing, baby. You understand now why we don't put our hand in the door and slam the door. Yes, daddy, I'm so sorry. No, no need to be sorry. It's okay. I forgive you. Go play. Just don't do it again. Can I tell you that is exactly what God wants to do for you right now? Now, please, I'm not comparing myself to the Lord. I need to be the one running to the Lord over and over again. So don't, don't, don't get it twisted, right? But that was one of the few times I got it right. But that's what God wants to do for us. How many times does God's word say, don't go sleeping around? Don't go getting drunk, don't, don't lie against your neighbor. You know, don't do these things. He has good reasons for every one of them. And then we say, okay, daddy. And then we go do them. And then at some point, God's like, okay. And then we go do it, and and then we feel shame. God told me not to, and I did anyway. But you know what he wants us to do? He wants us to come running to him. And then you know what he'll say. It's okay, baby. I forgive you. Here, let me let me make it better. Now listen, don't do it again. Do you understand why you don't need to do it again now? Yes, Daddy. Okay, go be free. How many of you, it's time to stop running, and it's time to let the Lord say, I forgive you,
Prayer And Daily Praise
SPEAKER_01go be free. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us in more ways than we can imagine. My prayer today, God, is we will no longer listen to the lie of the enemy that says, run and hide, but will listen to you, Holy Spirit, that it says, run to me. Run to me and see my goodness. I pray that we will run to you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And what God's Word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Every day is a new opportunity to give God praise. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter 39.
