Psalm 39: Finding What Really Matters

Facing Mortality Clarifies Priorities

Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 39, and today's title is Finding What Really Matters. Finding What Really Matters. My hope for you is that you never know anybody who has a life-threatening illness or has a close encounter with death, you know, like a massive car accident or something like that. I hope you never know anyone like that. And at the same time, I kind of hope you do. And here's the reason why is if you ever want to figure out what really matters, talk to someone who's had to look mortality in the face. I have a friend of mine who had he had a tragic car accident and it could have very easily taken his life. And it nearly did. He was in the hospital for a while and he had to have major surgeries and he ended up making a full 100% recovery. But that moment when he's in the hospital, in and out of consciousness, and he can, he does not know what's going to happen. He can barely keep himself conscious. He doesn't know if he's going to make it. He said, it is amazing in that moment what became clear. And I think that sometimes when we think about eternity, we think about what matters in the course of our lives. It's amazing the peace, it's amazing the clarity, and it's amazing the focus that it gives. And we're going to see how God's word teaches us that in Psalm

Psalms Context And Eternal Perspective

Well, if you've been with us over the past several days now, we are going through the book of Psalms, which is actually five books of songs of the collection of the major songs of the people of God. From the time of Moses all the way to the time of Malachi, these are the songs that shaped the people of God's relationship with God. And they processed through all these different major moments of their life. You can see this in our own culture, how some of the most popular songs, a lot of times, will deal with social pressures, difficulties, all these kinds of things. And it's the same thing during these times. And today's is all about a time when it seems as though David is reflecting during a time of suffering. Now we don't know exactly what this is, but the Bible actually tells us that it was for a guy named Jeduthon, who was likely a choir director. And so it what it seems as though is that David wrote this song and he wanted the people of God to sing this song because he wanted them to understand that the best way to deal with suffering is to have an eternal perspective. And something about that eternal perspective is very clarifying and it is very helpful for all of us to experience. And so let's read this together as David is just grappling with this eternal perspective. And let's see what God's Word will say to us

Psalm 39 Read Aloud

today. God's Word says in Psalm 39, verse 1, I said to myself, I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me. But as I stood there in silence, not even speaking of good things, the turmoil within me grew worse. The more I thought about it, the hotter I got, igniting a fire of words. Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered and how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you. At best, each of us is but a breath. Interlude, which means let the band play. That is my goal. By the time we are finished with the final psalm, when you see interlude or other translations will say sali, which means think on these things. You know these are songs, so that means let the band play. Here we go, verse six. We are merely moving shadows. All our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My hope only is in you. Rescue me from my rebellion. Do not let fools mock me. I am silent before you, and I won't say a word, for my punishment is from you. But please stop striking me. I am exhausted by my by the blows of your hand. When you discipline me for our sins, you consume like a moth what is precious to us. Each of us is but a breath. Let the band play. Verse 12 Hear my prayer, O Lord, listen to my cries for help. Don't ignore my tears, for I am your guest, a traveler passing through. My ancestors were before me. Leave me alone so I can smile again, before I am gone and exist no

Suffering As Temporary Training

more. So David is saying, I'm going through a time of suffering, and he's aware. Like if you if you read James chapter one, it says, consider it all joy, brothers and sisters, when you enter into times of trust of testing, because it produces patience and completes you so that you can stand under any weight. And and David is talking like that, and he's saying, Hey, listen, I get that suffering does good. And so I get that many times, God, you will you will use difficult times to develop us and make us into more of what you want us to be. But he's saying, Can you um can you stop? Can you give me a break? And he says, in the beginning, at the same time, I want to have an eternal perspective. I don't want to look at this suffering I'm going through as anything more than something I'm going through. Like I'm not, I'm not, you know, setting up a mailbox right here. I'm not moving in. I'm moving through this suffering. Help me have an eternal perspective so I can see it as a temporary thing. And can I tell you, that is so important that we never forget that.

What Really Matters Before Death

The answer to the question of finding what really matters is our relationship with God and sharing Him with other people. That's what really matters. I have had the privilege of being with people when it mattered most, when their life was on the line, when a terminal illness was given to them, you know, there are the uh diagnosis, other things like that. And you know what's amazing? In those moments, nobody says anything to me about how they need to check on their stock prices. Or, hey, have you seen what the president did today? Or have you seen what my favorite social media influencer did today? You all of those things become so unimportant in the light of eternity. But people start asking the question of, Pastor, how do I know for sure I'm right with God? Pastor, how do I make things right between me and my family? How do I make sure that my friends know that I love them? These are the important things. So, what does what really matters? Your relationship with God and doing the best you can to serve others so they may see his light
