Psalm 44: When God Leaves You On Read

Ever stared at a “read” notification and felt your brain sprint toward the worst-case story? That tiny modern stressor becomes a powerful way to name something deeper: what it feels like when we pray and God seems to read our message but not respond. We’re in Psalm 44 today, and we’re not dodging the hard emotions. We’re bringing them into the light with a biblical model for lament, honesty, and trust.

We walk through the Sons of Korah’s song from Book Two of Psalms, written in the shadow of national loss and humiliation. Red. R-E-A-D. I don't know about you, but one of the best slash worst things that smartphones have ever come out with is the ability for me to know when somebody else has received my text message. It's one thing for it to say it was delivered. I'm aware it was delivered. That's fine. That means the phone's working properly, right? But it's another thing for me to see that they read it and then they don't reply because it doesn't take long. And this isn't everybody, but a lot of people have told me this is true, but it doesn't take long. Where I start just automatically filling in the silence with my own ideas about why they're taking so long, right? And here's the thing it's almost never good. You know, my mind never says, you know why they're not responding? It's because they just found out they want a million dollars. You know what? I'm gonna give them five minutes. You know, or they just found out that they're getting a promotion, or you know what, they're taking themselves a nap. That's great. No, it's usually they don't like me anymore. We have beef nailed, something's wrong. They've been in an accident. It's just just terrible, right?

When Prayer Feels Left On Read

How many times do we do that with the Lord? And we pray and we ask God for something, we need something, and it seems like God has left us on red. We're like, God, I know you heard me, but you're not responding. And then we just automatically, we don't go, well, it's because God's preparing a miracle. It's because God's doing more than I can see. Usually it's God doesn't love me, he's mad at me, we're not friends anymore, all that kind of stuff. And if you've ever felt that way, good news because it's not new and you're not the first. Psalm 44 is all about when you we feel like we are experiencing suffering unfairly, unjustly. What do you do when you're experiencing suffering and unfairness and you pray to God for deliverance, and it seems like all he has done is left you on red. That's you. Today's song is for you. Psalm 44 Context And Setting

the more we find. Well, if you've been with us over the past while now, we are going through what we are calling a soundtrack for life. And this soundtrack is all about the people of God doing life with God. It is a collection of the greatest songs of the nation of Israel that the Holy Spirit inspired from the time of Moses all the way to the time of Malachi. And we're in book two of the five books that make up the book of Psalms. And in this book two, many of these songs are written by a people group called the Sons of Korah. These would have been the people in the temple that were the instruments, that were those vocalists that were doing all these things. But this is written closer to the time of Malachi. It's during a time when the nation of Israel has been destroyed by the Babylonians, the temple has been destroyed, and these people have been deported to other nations. And they're thinking back to their time with God, and they're thinking back with longing and wondering when God is going to restore them. And this is a time when they would have been praying and saying, God, all these enemies are around me. What are you going to do? And they feel like that God's left him on red. And so if that's you, you're going to really get something out of this. And so let's read this together.

Psalm 44, verse 1 says this, Oh God, we have heard it with our own ears. Our ancestors have told us of all you did in their day, in days long ago. You drove out the pagan nations by your power and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies and set ancestors free. They did not conquer the land with their swords. It did not, it was not for their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right arm and strong, it was your right hand and your strong arm. It was the blinding light of your face that helped them. For you love them. You are my king and my God. You command victories over for Israel. Only by your power can we push back our enemies. Only in your name can we trample our foes. I do not trust in my bow. I do not count on my sword to save me. You are the one who gives us victory over our enemies. You disgrace those who hate us. O God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name. Interlude, which means let the band play. Let them play for a moment. And then here we come back. Verse 9. But now you have tossed us aside in dishonor. You no longer lead our armies to battle. You make us retreat from our enemies and allow those who hate us to plunder our land. You have butchered us like sheep and scattered us among the nations. You sold your prosperous people for repittance, making nothing on the sale. You let our neighbors mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to those around us. You have made us the butt of their jokes. They shake their heads at us in scorn. We can't escape the constant humiliation. Shame is written across our faces. We all hear the taunts of our mockers. We all see our vengeful enemies. All this has happened, though we have not forgotten you. We have not violated your covenant. Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path. Yet you have crushed us in the jackal's desert home. You have covered us with darkness and death. We have forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods. God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart. But you, but for your sake, we are killed every day. We are being slaughtered like sheep. So wake up, O Lord. Why do you sleep? Get up, don't reject us forever. Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression? We collapse in the dust, laying our face in the dirt. Rise up, help us, ransom us because of your unfailing love.

Why God’s Silence Hurts

Wow. If there's ever been a song, right, that you go, I got that. He starts off and imagine this as being sent as one long text message, right? God, I remember the stories of when I was a kid of about your faithfulness and you did these great things, and then you did more great things, and you just did all kinds of great things. And he got so excited, he said, let the band play. And then when he comes back, he's like, Now that I remember all your goodness, that makes me even more confused as to why I'm going through this right now. God, you are faithful. You are good. So why are we suffering? Why does it seem like everything is going wrong? And why is it that you see this, but you haven't done anything yet? I see that you've read this. In other words, I see that you know, why aren't you replying? Why aren't you responding? And what a wonderful question that is. Because as we talked about at the beginning of this episode, when we have a friend who doesn't reply right away, we automatically assume the worst many times. Oh no, what happened? What's going on? Is there beef? Is there something happening? Is there be are they being passive aggressive or whatever,

Scroll Up On God’s Faithfulness

whatever? And we don't know what happened. And you know what many times we need to do when we when we are reading a text message and we see that they've read it but they haven't replied, and all of a sudden we start thinking all the bad things. You know, one of the greatest tools to do is to scroll up. Scroll up and remember they don't have beef with us. We have a great relationship. That yes, they they don't always respond as soon as we press in. But when they do, they are our friend. They are we can count on them. Everything's okay. Just because they haven't responded doesn't mean they're not listening, it doesn't mean they're not doing something. And when they do respond, it's always good. Everything's fine. It's not that something is wrong, it's that we're impatient. But they're they're fine. Can I tell you what happens with us many times? Is when we pray and God doesn't answer right away, we fill that silence with all kinds of lies. God isn't faithful, God won't do it, God allows evil in my life, all these different things, all these different things. But if we could just scroll up a little bit and see that many times when we pray, God doesn't operate by our timetable. He has the you know the right to do that. But we scroll up, we see he's always been faithful. He's always responded when we needed him, he's always done it, he's just done it in his way at his timing. And and when I look back up at our at our chat history, I can see there was always a real good reason. And if there's always been a good reason, what's different about this time? The answer is nothing.

Trust God’s Timing In Waiting

So here's the thing: it is perfectly okay to run to God and to ask for his help and to say, God, I need you and I need you right now. Send the text message, pray the prayer. What's not okay is automatically assuming intent based on the timing of his reply. Just because he doesn't answer right away does not mean he is being unfaithful, that he doesn't love you, or that something's wrong. Many times it's only because God is working and he is moving and he is doing more than we can ask, think, or imagine. He is making a way where there is no way. He is doing miracles that we will only see later and go, oh God, only you could have done that. Miracles take time. Not because God's limited, but because he's always doing something in us, in the waiting. And so we trust him in all things. Let's pray

together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are with us and that you are for us. Lord, I dare say there are probably many of us right now in this moment that are in those seasons of waiting. In those seasons, and we felt like you've put us on red. I pray you will remind us of your faithfulness. Remind us how you've always been good. And if you have always been good, you will continue to be good. Help us to learn to trust you more in all things. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Well, God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter 45.
