Psalm 46: God Is Our Unshakeable Hope

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 46, and today's title is God is Our Unshakable Hope. God is Our Unshakable Hope. The idea of this is what do we do when life feels chaotic?

The Lake Wakes And The Pier

It reminds me of, I remember when I was a kid, we were at this lake. It was called Smith Lake in Alabama, and we were playing in the water around this pier. And as we were playing, they were these boats that would come along. And as they would come along, they would leave these wakes that would just, you know, just throw us all over the place. And I was young enough that when a big boat would go by, it'd almost take me under because just the wakes being what they were. And I remember one time, it just seemed like every big boat on that lake was going by. And it got to be where it was almost too much. And I noticed every time it would get like that, it, you know, I would just have a hard time staying up. But my sister was fine. And I later figured out what she would do is when the waves would get a little too much, she would put her hands on the pier and steady herself. And so eventually what I realized is every time I saw a bunch of boats coming, I just got out of the water. I just jumped up on the pier and I was just fine. Well, this psalm is going to teach us about the fact that when the storms of life, when the waves start crashing in, we don't have to just stay there and take it. But there is an unshakable hope. There's a pier in the middle of all of that water, and his name is Jesus. His name is the Lord. And this psalmist, another psalm of the sons of Korah, are dealing with some chaotic situations going on in their life. And they have realized and they're talking about when all of that happens, the peer, the foundation is in God alone. Psalms As Songs For Exile

Well, if you've been joining us over the past while now, we are slowly going through what we are calling the soundtrack for life. We're almost a third of the way through. It's 150 chapters. And these are actually songs that were written for the people of God. As they were going through the time of Moses to the time of Malachi, these songs were written to help them understand and to process how to do life with God. These songs in the second book of the five books of Psalms were written toward the end of that time frame when they are in captivity at this point, or are exile rather, and they're having to deal with not being where they want to be. Life is chaotic, there's panic all around them, and they're having to figure out how to do life with God in a foreign land. And it's this idea of when the waves start to come, when the they start to overwhelm us, what do we do? Well, God's Word teaches us exactly what to do. And so let's read this together and see what God's Word will say to

Reading Psalm 46 Together

us today. Here we go. Psalm 46, verse 1 says this God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and when mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam, let the mountains tremble as the waters surge. Interlude. In other words, let the band play. So once they have played, verse 4 a river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High. God dwells in that city and it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day, God will protect it. The nations are in chaos and their kingdoms crumble. God's voice thunders and the earth melts. The Lord's heavens, uh Lord of heaven's armies, is here among us. The God of Israel is our fortress. Interlude, which means let the band play. All right, verse 8. Come and see the glorious works of the Lord. See how he brings destruction upon the world. He causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear. He burns the shields with fire. Be still and know that I am God. I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world. The Lord of heaven's armies is here among us. The God of Israel is our fortress. Interlude, which means let the band play. That's going to be maybe one of our next t-shirts. Let the band play, right? Well, this is what the word of God teaches us.

When Everything Shakes, God Doesn’t

The word of God teaches us that when things are going bad, God's not. When the world is in chaos, God is not. When it seems like everything that can be shaken is shaken, God is not shaken. God is our refuge and He is always ready to help in times of trouble. Now here's the thing. What do you do when life is in chaos? Because most of the time, when life is in chaos, that means life is in chaos. It's not always so easy. You know, you hear some people who will say, well, you know what? When life is in chaos, you just need to take extra time and just pray. And I've heard people say, Well, that sounds great. I wish I had some extra time. That would help me not be in so much chaos. So let me give you a practical step that's helped

Practical Peace For Busy Days

me. And maybe it'll help you too. Here's the thing is first of all, if you are in a season where you can, I would encourage you to get up about 30 minutes earlier. Now I know that's hard, especially if you're not a morning person. It might mean you stay in, you stay up 30 minutes later, but that may not be practical. Get up 30 minutes earlier. And here's the reason why that most people are not going to be texting you. Most of the time, depending on the season of your life, your kids will still be asleep, you know, or your spouse will still be asleep. The emails haven't started yet, all this kind of stuff. 30 minutes and you take that time and you just begin your day by grounding yourself in God. You read God's word, you listen to this podcast. We release it at midnight every night. So you have it, no matter what time you get up in the morning, you start the day reading God's word. You start the day in prayer and praising God. And you just find your peace, your stillness in God before the chaos of the day can begin. If you're not in that season where you can't do that, the next thing to do would be to pray throughout the day like you're sending God a text message. You know, sometimes we think that prayer has to be a special time and all this stuff. And that's a great, if you can do that, but sometimes you can't do that. And so instead, don't try to pray all at once. Pray throughout the day and find those moments when you have just a moment and you pray. If we have time to find moments to check social media, we have moments to find time to find our stillness again in the Lord. One of the ways I like to do this when I'm going through these seasons is I will find a scripture that I really like and I will take a screenshot of it on my phone, or I'll write it down in the notes app on my phone. And when I have a moment when I would normally check social media or whatever, I pull that up and I read that over a few times, that promise from the Lord, and I'll remember it. Maybe that needs to be today's. Well, you need to do it today. Find, get your Bible app out or whatever, get your notes app out, and write down Psalm 46, verse 1 that says, God is our refuge and strength. He's always ready to help in times of trouble. And then when you go through those moments, you remember God is my refuge. The foundation of my life is not my marriage. The foundation of my life is not my kids. It's not my job. It's not my church family. All these things are great. The foundation of my life is the Lord. And so as long as the Lord doesn't move, everything's
