Psalm 47: Worship Like Our King Reigns

Worship Leader Perspective On Participation

One of the things that you may or may not know about me is growing up for most of my life, I was actually a worship leader, music director, music pastor, whatever you want to call it from your background, at a local church. And one of the things that would constantly bother me as a worship leader is when people thought that we were trying to put on a concert or we were trying to be the spectacle of the day, you know, that kind of thing. That was not it. Our job as people on a stage leading worship was to do that, was to lead worship. And we would try to remind people that that worship is a lot of things. It's not just music, it's not just, you know, uh singing, all this kind of stuff, but that is part of it. And worship can happen in any, you know, any environment and with any emotion. We can worship through a broken heart as we are giving it to God, all that kind of good stuff. But my favorite way to worship is to worship with my idea of God as the king and that he reigns. And one of the things I used to always say is, How would you act today if the king of kings walked into the room? We would probably be excited, right? And that is exactly what this psalm is going to talk about is to worship the king as though he has entered the room. And so we're going to get all that in

Why The Psalms Train Our Hearts

we find. Well, that is definitely what we're doing right now because we are walking through the songs of the people of God. You know, we look at the book of Psalms as a collection of the greatest hits of the people of God, all the way from the time of Moses to the time of Malachi. These were songs that the Bible uses to help us know how to relate to God. And I don't know if this makes a difference to you or not. It does me, but some of these songs were sang by Jesus. He quotes from some of these. You know, some of these songs were songs that people would have known because these songs help us through all different stages of life. It helps us to know what to do on road trips when we have a broken heart. And in this one, how to relate to God as though he reigns, as though everything is going well. One of the things we used to do when I was growing up is we would have a time when we would be singing these songs about God, and then we would just let the band play. Just because the idea is let us not like do rehearsed words to God anymore, but let's just take a time and we just sing our own song to God. And then we would go back into talking about how God reigns. And this is one of those where it was written by the sons of Korah. And a lot of times this would actually be saying during one of the feasts of the Jewish people called the Feast of Trumpets. And it was a time when they would just be celebrating the coming of Christ and our coming of God, we know as Christ, and just celebrating who God is. And so let's read this together and just see how this is one of those moments where they're not asking God for anything, they're not hoping to get anything from God. They're just trying to celebrate that the king is alive.

Reading Psalm 47 Together

Here we go. Psalm 47, verse 1 says this. Oh, come, everyone, clap your hands, shout to God with joyful praise. For the Lord most high is awesome. I love that one right there. The Lord Most High is awesome. He is a great king of all the earth. He subdues the nations before us, putting our enemies beneath our feet. He chose the promised land as our inheritance, the proud possession of Jacob's descendants, whom he loves. Interlude, which means let the band play. One of my goals by the time we are through the book of Psalms is every time you see interlude or other translations say Selah, immediately in your mind it will say, Let the band play. All right, once they do their turnaround, it comes back, it says, God has ascended with a mighty shout. The Lord has ascended with trumpets blaring. Sing praises to God, sing praises. Sing praises to our king, sing praises. For God is the king over all the earth. Praise him with a psalm. God reigns above the nations, sitting on his holy throne. The rulers of the world have gathered together with the people of God of Abraham. For all the kings of the earth belong to God, he is highly honored everywhere. Wow.

The Challenge To Worship Actively

The idea behind this psalm is not just that the king reigns, but let us take an active part in celebrating that fact. Here's my here's my my hope for you today. Here's my challenge for you today. And that is this worship of God is meant to be an active verb. When an action verb. When we worship God, the word worship should not be something that we watch other people do, but something that we participate in. And so here's my challenge for you. I don't know if you listen to Christian music a whole lot. I hope you do, but I would love for you to take a song today, and I want you to play that song. And when you play that song, don't listen to how they're doing it. Don't listen to how great the studio did and mixing it, all that. Let that song be a vehicle that helps you and you worship God. Treat that song as an invitation for you to worship God. This would be a next one. And that is this coming Sunday, wherever you are, all over the world, when you go to church next and you see those people on stage singing. I don't know what their heart is, I don't know why they're doing it, but this is what we do. When we come into church, our primary goal should not be what can we receive from God, but rather what worship can we give to God. And so this Sunday, when you go to church, when you hear those songs, don't see them as an opportunity to watch other people worship, but see it as an opportunity to engage with people and worship together because our King reigns. And he invites us to take an active role in being part of that celebration. And I want to tell you, it will change how you go to church. If you go to church to no longer be a consumer, but be a contributor, you'll have more fun. You will see why God says we should not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. There's something encouraging about when we worship the Lord together. Try it and watch

Prayer For Perspective And Closing

what happens. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you reign in heaven and you give us an opportunity to celebrate that. The reason why that is so important is that when we get a full picture that you reign in heaven, it helps us to realize, God, that you also reign on earth, that you are in control more than we realize. The bigger our God gets, the more perspective we have on our problems. I'm thankful that you are bigger than anything we will face in this life. We celebrate you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter 48.
