PSalm 48: God Doesn’t Get Lost

Your GPS can reroute you in seconds, and you rarely demand a full explanation before you take the exit. That everyday instinct becomes the doorway into Psalm 48, where we zoom out and remember something even more stabilizing: God doesn’t get lost. We talk about what it means to follow a Guide who has the highest vantage point, who sees traffic you can’t see, and who leads with purpose even when the path feels unfamiliar. 

We read Psalm 48 as a worship song that celebrates God’s greatness, God’s justice, and God’s protection of his people. The psalm invites us to “walk around” and take stock of what God has done, not to brag about our strength, but to build a memory of God’s faithfulness we can pass on. When fear shows up, that history matters. Worship becomes a way to remember that the King is still defending and still guiding. 

Then we bring it home to daily life: unanswered prayers, painful seasons, and the detours we never would have chosen. If God created the heavens and the earth, and if Jesus came near to save us, then God’s power and love aren’t in question. It’s okay to ask, “Why am I here?” as long as we end with trust. Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 48. And today's title is God Doesn't Get Lost. God does not get lost.

GPS Detour Story And Trust

The other day, I was on my way to a local city, and I've been down this road so many times I could do it in my sleep, right? Like I always go this way. But in order to kind of figure out how long it's going to take, I usually always keep my GPS on, just that way I know how much more time I've got. Because it takes usually a little over an hour to get where I wanted to be. And out of nowhere, my GPS was telling me to get off of an exit that I didn't normally get off on. And I am old enough to remember when GPS was new and you didn't always trust it, right? Many times you would be trying to go to a store and it would, you know, it you'd end up in a cornfield somewhere. I mean, it was like crazy. But most of the time now, GPS is right. And because I have gone the wrong way by not, you know, taking the advice of my GPS, I've got to wear it now, and it tells me to get off an exit. A lot of times I'll do it, you know. And I ended up getting off of this exit only to realize there had been an accident. And if I hadn't have gotten off the exit, I would have been stuck there for a long time. And I've learned slowly to trust my GPS more than I will trust what I think I know is going on. Well, this psalm is gonna talk about that. It's gonna talk about how God is great, God is good, God is above all, and that this great God doesn't get lost. He leads us in every area of life. And that might be something that some of us need to hear today, and that is that God is great, which means he's great toward us. And so we're gonna get all

Well, one of the ways that we dig into the Bible is using the text of the Bible so that we can see God more clearly. And as we've said before, I kind of look at the book of Proverbs is understanding how to relate to one another, but the book of Psalms is learning how we can relate to God. And the book of Psalms is kind of that soundtrack for life. It is the psalm book, the collection of the greatest hits of the people of God from the time of Moses all the way to the time of Malachi. And it really speaks on almost every area of life you can think of. And one of those would be from today's topic, which is who's leading the way. You know, we we take for granted a lot of times, if you use GPS nowadays, you take for granted that, you know, GPS has a view that we don't see, right? It's it's from it's connected to satellites, you know, up in the sky, and it can see all the different traffic reports, it sees all the different things. And so it's going to lead us in the right direction. And we just trust that it sees what we don't see, right? Because it has a better vantage point. Well, that's what today's Psalm is all about. It's written by the descendants of Korah, so the worship leaders of the people of God. And one of their greatest hits that the Holy Spirit inspired was to say, see how great our God is, and then to say, that's the one who is leading us. And so let's read this together and just enjoy God's word. Here we

Reading Psalm 48 And God’s Protection

go. Psalm 48, verse 1 says this How great is the Lord, how deserving of praise in the city of our God, which sits on his holy mountain. It is high and magnificent, and the whole earth rejoices to see it. Mount Zion, the holy mountain, is the city of the great king. God himself is in Jerusalem's towers, revealing himself as its defender. The king of the earth joins forces and advanced against the city. When they saw it, they were stunned, and they were terrified and ran away. They were gripped with terror and writhed in pain like a woman in labor. You destroyed them like the mighty ships of Tarshish and scattered by a powerful east wind. When he had heard of the city's glory, wait, we had heard of the city's glory, but now we see it ourselves. The city of the Lord of heaven's armies. It is the city of our God, and he will make it safe forever. Interlude, which means let the band play. So they play, they play in. As your name deserves, O God, you will be praised to the ends of the earth. Your strong right hand is filled with victory. Let the people of Mount Zion rejoice. Let all the towns of Judah be glad because of your justice. Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem, walk around and count the many towers, take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations. For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die.

God’s Vantage Point And Our Detours

So once again, what the sons of Korah are doing is they're singing this song, is they're saying, Look at how great God is. Look at how greatly He has protected us in the past. Look at how much bigger above ourselves He is. Let us rejoice in that, that God will guide us all the days of our life. So, once again, using that GPS analogy, is think about how far above the sky these satellites are. They see not just our little world, they see all over the world. They see traffic reports, they see all these things over here, they see where construction sites are, they see all of this, which is why they see far ahead and they know how to navigate us left and right. Therefore, if GPS says, hey, you need to take this detour, we just trust that it knows what it's doing better than we do. And it's and if that's what we do with technology, how much more should we trust the king of the universe? How does this look for all of us today?

Jesus, Sovereignty, And Learning To Trust

That is this. Think about the first verse of the Bible. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, which automatically means if that verse is possible, and of course it is, then anything else is possible. And that that God loves us more than we can imagine. That God came to earth, Jesus Christ put on flesh, lived among us, died on the cross for our sins, rose again, and offers us eternal life. If God will go through all of that trouble to save us, what will he not do for us? That he sees everything and he guides us along the way. Therefore, if God leads us through a detour, there's a reason. If God leads us straight down a highway, there's a reason. If God does not stop things from happening, there is a reason. And it's okay to look at God and go, why am I going through this detour? Why am I going through this trouble and this difficulty? There's nothing wrong with it. As long as we end the conversation with, but I trust in you. And you know what? Can I tell you? After living this life of as a Christian for a while now, can I tell you there have been so many times when I have wondered why God didn't answer my prayers the way I wanted, only to look back and be so thankful that he didn't, because I didn't see what was coming. I didn't see what I needed to know. And then that detour taught me what I needed to know. And so here's the thing: God is king, God is sovereign, God is powerful and mighty, and nothing else is even close to equal to him. That God loves you. And if you're a Christian, that God is leading your life in the right direction. Therefore, when he says go this way or that way, or he leads us that way through detours of life, we go, God, I don't want to be here, but I wouldn't, I don't want to be anywhere else if this is where you've left me.

Prayer And Closing Blessing

Let's pray to God. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you that you are with us and that you're for us. Thank you, God, that you are great and mighty. Therefore, wherever you guide us, you have purpose for us. God, we'll be honest with you and say there are many times you guide us to places we would rather not be. But at the same time, we don't want to be anywhere else if that's where you have us. Because we know that right there is the place where you need us. We trust that you know why. We just trust you to continue leading us the rest of the way. We're thankful for you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. I will bless the Lord at all times. His name, his praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter 49.
