The Cornfield. The stalks claw at her arms as she tears through the field. The towering cornstalks rustle, whispering with every frantic step. Her breath is ragged, her lungs burn, but she can't stop, won't stop. Somewhere behind her, the heavy thud of footsteps pounds the earth. She dares a glance back and sees him, a massive figure, crashing through the corn, his wide frame bulldozing through the stalks as if they were nothing. He's gaining. Her legs scream for rest, but fear propels her forward. Who is he? What does he want? The sun is is sinking, the light slanting through the stalks in long golden fingers. Soon darkness will swallow the field. She spots a break ahead, a clearing, if she can. Just a deep, guttural voice bellows behind her stop running. Lena's blood turns to ice. She pumps her legs harder.

Exxa:

Dale Wheeler's heart hammers like a drum. Sweat pours down his round face, his shirt clinging to his massive belly. He's six foot seven and weighs 340 pounds, but he's agile for a man of his size. The girl is fast, faster than he expected. But he has to catch her. His thick hands slap the corn stalks aside, his breath coming in, ragged, wheezes. He hates running, stop running. He shouts, his voice cracking. Stop running. He shouts, his voice cracking. She doesn't, of course she doesn't, they never do A stitch bites deep in his side, but he pushes through it.

Exxa:

The girl reaches the clearing. Dale sees her hesitate just for a second. But it's enough. He lunges, a thick hand clamps around her wrist, yanking her back so hard. Her feet leave the ground. She screams, thrashing, kicking wildly. No, no, let me go. I'm trying to help you. He roars, his grip iron clad. Lena claws at his arm, terror exploding in her chest. His face is round, red, slick with sweat. His beady eyes dart around panicked. Suddenly, a deep, guttural growl rumbles behind the massive man. Lena freezes. The breath on her neck is hot. Slowly, so slowly, she moves her head to the right to look behind the man. The thing standing behind him isn't human.

Exxa:

The Beast is taller than the corn stalks. Its eyes, black pits, its mouth stretched into a grin that splits its face. Long gnarled fingers twitch in anticipation and then it speaks Give her to me. Lena's scream dies in her throat. Dale tightens his grip on the girl. I told you to stop running, he rasps. The thing shifts closer, the corn bending beneath its weight. Dale has seen what it does to the ones it catches. He swallows hard, not this one. He says with an agitated voice. The creature tilts its head. Then, slowly, it grins wider. Lena's body goes rigid as she finally understands. Then slowly it grins wider. Lena's body goes rigid as she finally understands. Dale isn't chasing her, he's saving her.

Exxa:

The beast moves first. It lunges impossibly fast for something its size, its elongated fingers reaching for the girl. Dale reacts on instinct, yanking Lena behind him and swinging his fist with everything he has. His knuckles connect with the creature's face. It feels like punching wet cement. The thing barely flinches. Dale stumbles back, his breath ragged. The monster straightens its grin, unwavering. Slowly it tilts its head, black eyes narrowing with something almost like amusement. Then it slashes. Dale barely sees the claws before they tear through his shirt, raking across his chest. He roars in pain, staggering, but he doesn't go down. Dale looks down at the blood coming through his shirt, looks up at the Beast and says with a mocking voice I know this is cliche, but is that all you got, bitch? He's fought before, he's bled before, but never against something like this.

Exxa:

Lena watches in frozen horror as the monster's claws suddenly and swiftly rip into Dale, causing blood to splatter across the corn stalks. But instead of collapsing, the giant man grins and then he charges. The impact is violent. Dan grins and then he charges. The impact is violent. Dale slams into the creature like a human wrecking ball, driving it back into the stalks. The corn shudders violently as they crash through it, snarling and thrashing. Lena can only hear it and watch corn stalks sway around and disappear in the chaos. It seems to go on forever. Lena doesn't know what to do, run Help.

Exxa:

Suddenly the monster screeches, an awful inhuman sound, and then Dale roars back and with his meaty fists starts hammering into its skull. He doesn't fight like a man, he fights like a beast, like something that's been here before, something that knows how to kill. Lena's breath catches. Dale isn't just big, he's strong. Even as Dale's fists break bone, even as he grips its throat and squeezes it sounds like the monster is laughing, a gurgling laugh. Its grin never fades. Dale just tears into it. His hands, thick, powerful, grip and rip at the creature's jaw, forcing it open wider, wider. The monster screams louder.

Exxa:

Dale, bent over, plants his boot against its chest, grips its skull and, with one final monstrous effort, rips its head in half. Black ichor explodes from the creature's gaping maw. It shudders violently, its body twitching, spasming. Then it collapses, the corn stalks go. Still, dale stands over the thing, panting his arms coated in thick dark blood. He spits to the side and wipes his face, grimacing. Then he turns to Lena. She stares at him wide-eyed, breathless Dale sighs, his chest still rising and falling like a storm, blood still bleeding through his shirt. Now do you get why I was chasing you, he mutters. Lena swallows hard. She nods. For the first time Dale allows himself a small, weary smile. Good, he says, cracking his neck. Now let's get the hell out of here before its friends show up.
