We drive from Iowa to Indiana to wheel three spots in brutal heat, and the trip turns into a chain of breakdowns, fixes, and stories that only make sense once you’ve earned them on the side of the road. We end up comparing Interlake and Thorns to Ty’s property, and we leave convinced that the best trails are the ones that come with the best people.

August 15th at MIOBI, wheeling for Wyatt, Wyatt’s Warriors, Rocks Ruts and Resilience, find it on Facebook events or Wyatt’s Warriors Foundation dot org, $20 per rig.

Garage Intro And Crew Roll Call

SPEAKER_05

Is this a shirtless episode? Is this a shirtless episode? How about we just get started?

SPEAKER_03

You Oh I didn't wait for all the time.

SPEAKER_05

You went too early, just like Julie complains about. Kick tires light the fires.

SPEAKER_00

You're gonna do a lot of talking.

SPEAKER_05

Welcome to Heatree to Garage, where friends come together, share their love of life, creativity, and everything in between. Season four, episode eight, live on location in Rico's garage. Which is in Indiana. It is in Indiana. We spent We did some things. How's that song go? Four days on the road, I'm gonna be home tonight. Is that like a Surrey Brown song? Six days.

SPEAKER_03

Six days on the road, and I'm like gonna make it home tonight.

SPEAKER_05

It feels like six because it's been hot.

SPEAKER_03

But it's been an adventure. It was hotter than two mice fucking in a wool sock yesterday.

SPEAKER_05

So descriptive all the time. Also joining us around the table in a weird order. Guy's to my right this time. Doss Chad is straight across. Hello. Big G's next to him. Hi. And we have the Indiana Sasquatch at the end of the table.

SPEAKER_03

Hello.

SPEAKER_06

I thought it was five deadfenders.

SPEAKER_05

Saving that for the Patreon, but here we go. So longtime listener, first time guest, Mark Hathaway.

SPEAKER_03

Glad to be here. Thank you.

SPEAKER_05

So we'll have to be on another time to uh we'll get the uh listener questions because we're gonna we got a lot to talk about tonight. We got stuff to talk about, and then like we said, hit the road, get home. Do we do we need to kill the big fan?

SPEAKER_03

Is it getting it's I I'm uh I'm having a hard time hearing Ricky.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. We're gonna kill the big fan. I could hear it great because I had headphones on, but I took them off because my ears are sweaty already. All right.

SPEAKER_02

So it has been a hot week.

The Plan For Three Parks

SPEAKER_03

Very hot.

SPEAKER_02

So hot. That's better. We don't have a helicopter idol in the shop now.

SPEAKER_05

We will start with Ricky tell us say what we did since uh this was his brainchild trip.

SPEAKER_02

What did we do, Ricky? We went and to a couple off-road parks and to a private property, a buddy of mine, and tried to do some wheeling. Uh I think we did do some wheeling. It was more than try. We did. We did. We uh we started out. You guys made it, it took you like three days to drive from Iowa to here.

SPEAKER_03

Well, at least it's getting faster. For a while, it was a four-day trip. It was a six-hour trip. We were kind of like Gilligan there for a while. But felt like four.

SPEAKER_02

We started this deal on Thursday. Yes. It's now Sunday.

SPEAKER_05

For the record, the scout was ready two days prior. To leave it.

SPEAKER_02

It did not get cut in half.

SPEAKER_05

And it didn't get cut in half. I had strict I had strict instructions. Can't touch the sawzall. You never say anything about the ch the bandsaw, but but we had we had both rigs loaded the day before.

SPEAKER_06

We were all loaded the day before. Yeah. We were ready. It's up for food that we left in the refrigerator. It's still where we left it.

SPEAKER_05

It's still staged to leave.

SPEAKER_06

Still in the refrigerator. Remember the beef and noodles.

SPEAKER_05

Yes, we remember the important part. We just had our victory dinner as to speak that we made the week. Yep. Made the trip. We had Annie's homemade beef and noodles and Kelly's mashed potatoes. They pair great together.

SPEAKER_06

Yes, they do. Very tasty.

SPEAKER_05

Ricky will be eating beef and noodles for breakfast, lunch, and supper for the next week. For a while now. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So we planned for too many people, but some of my friends suck and don't show up, so that's what happens. Well, you have to import your friends to be get good friends, you know. Right, right. But uh start out with an outline. Uh Thursday was to be the travel day. We were gonna start Friday at Innerlake, and then travel to Thorns in Bedford, Indiana on Saturday, and then Sunday we went to a buddy of mine's property in Hillsdale, Indiana. Wheeled there, and then, like I said, now we are here at my shop doing the podcast, eating our Victory dinner. So you just want to break it down day by day? Go for it. My Thursday started out with a message from Chris that said you guys were gonna

Roadside Belt Failure And Fix

SPEAKER_02

leave early in the morning.

SPEAKER_06

And we did. We left Alan.

SPEAKER_02

And we did and be here at one o'clock, and then I get a text from court said we're gonna be delayed.

SPEAKER_03

45 minutes later.

SPEAKER_02

So I will turn it over to you, Chris, and you can tell us about the delay.

SPEAKER_05

Uh so we made it Edge of Dubuque, took the bypass around Dubuque, just about to get on. We were turning onto the on-ramp to go south on Highway 52, which would take us down south to 80, which takes us to 74, and then straight across Illinois into Indiana. Everything's going great. Slow down for the uh the turn, and I'm like, I don't my brakes feel funny. Oh, I don't have any steering either. Oh, it was. I said, Oh, the steering feels funny, and then it's like, oh, the brakes are kind of hard, and then guy's like and it's getting hot. I'm like, I looked at the temperature, I'm like, temp's fine. He meant it was getting hot in there because the AC wasn't working either. Uh all at once, with no warning, the serpentine belt tensioner left the chat. The bearing on the pulley, and took the took part of the belt with it, just couldn't bear life anymore. Couldn't. So we got over the side of the road, figured out what it was, and it was what, seven? It was a half hour before any of the parts store opened up. It was a half hour before the the parts are we were gonna get parts from, yeah, because uh so I called Annie. She had just gotten to her work, which is like three-quarters of a mile, half mile from the Napa store that had the parts, but Napa hadn't opened yet, so she got she left work, was there as they opened. I got hold of my parts guy there, got a new serpentine belt and belt, or serpentine belt and tensioner.

SPEAKER_03

Burnt the shit out of ourselves trying to get that out of there. Yes, broke a wrench.

SPEAKER_05

Uh I had I found three different ticks on me. Well, one had tried to bite to latch on, the other two were on my sock, but apparently there's ticks in that ditch. And nobody even stopped to ask if we were okay. Not a one. Hour and a half. Hour and a half.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, it might have been. I'm gonna go with the theory that it's because we looked like we knew what we were doing. Well, not because we were ugly.

SPEAKER_05

I I'll go with that too. I'll go with you on that one. So then we got back on the road an hour and a half later.

SPEAKER_02

And that was pretty smooth sailing all the way here. Which worked out well because court sent a text that said you was gonna be delayed right at the time the Thea said she wanted to lay down and take a nap. So I'm like, well, let's take a nap. So that's what I did.

SPEAKER_03

Naps with grandkids are the best, aren't they?

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely. So your one o'clock turned into, I believe, four o'clock is when you rolled in here.

SPEAKER_03

By the time we made a few fuel stops and stopped for lunch, and and we left here, went to the tractor supply to get the rest of the parts for your hammocks.

SPEAKER_02

And then we made it 50 feet to go get fuel.

SPEAKER_06

It seemed like for a little bit there, it felt like we were to stop and get groceries.

SPEAKER_02

No, we didn't we didn't get groceries until we made it down to Vincent's.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we didn't finish the trip.

SPEAKER_02

But before we got to Vincent's, the square body decided to blow a boot off the intercooler, so we had to stop in Sullivan.

SPEAKER_03

That was like a hundred feet after we filled up with fuel. Right. It just seemed like it seemed like there was like a an hour or two in there where it was like the next stop was wherever the the furthest you could see.

SPEAKER_02

Sullivan, Indiana has the crummiest truck stop that has a one-hole restroom, and when four dudes go in to take a piss break, you end up just going and pissing by the trailers.

SPEAKER_05

It looked like everybody else had been using it back there, too. It looked like somebody was using the uh edge of the parking lot for a dumpster.

SPEAKER_02

So we got the boot back on, got back on the highway, made it to Vincent's to get because Court needed to make a liquor stop. I think we all need it.

SPEAKER_05

You guys needed beer. Let's elaborate. I didn't know that. That in Indiana you can buy cold beer at liquor store, but it's not all cold. But you can't buy cold pop at the liquor store. Right. And you can't buy cold beer at the gas station.

SPEAKER_03

But you can get cold pop there.

SPEAKER_02

But you can get cold pop there.

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_06

Dumb.

SPEAKER_03

So dumb.

SPEAKER_02

You can buy it on Sunday, but only from noon till five.

SPEAKER_03

Ours is noon to eight.

SPEAKER_02

Is it noon to eight?

SPEAKER_03

Noon to eight out there. And and in Iowa, you can you can get all your liquor at the gas station, and it's cold.

SPEAKER_06

Uh and from like six o'clock in the morning till two o'clock.

SPEAKER_05

Two in the morning. Yeah. And not far from us, there's a town that has a drive-up liquor store.

SPEAKER_02

Drive-through, actually. So so we stopped at the liquor store, you guys got your supplies, and what did Court realize that he forgot while we were at the liquor store?

SPEAKER_06

Uh forgot all the food

Beer Laws Lunch Forgetting And Pranks

SPEAKER_06

for lunches. All the we loading coolers, loading stuff.

SPEAKER_05

It was like hours before you normally get up.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. It was way early in the morning. I picked the chat up at a corner to five. It's way too early.

SPEAKER_02

So we left the liquor store, got on the highway, got off at the next exit. Go to the grocery store. Go to the Walmart. Where Geyer pulled a little prank on Court unintentionally. Oh God.

SPEAKER_03

I was just I was acting like a two-year-old carrying the sacks, just swinging them back and forth. Court walked up behind me. He was looking at his phone instead of watching where he was walking, and I whacked him in the pecker with a bag full of sandwich meat. Hopefully it was the salami that got you. It probably was.

SPEAKER_02

So at this point, we're like an hour and a half is waiting for us.

SPEAKER_03

I was gonna get to that. Mark's Mark was at the campsite at three o'clock, and then I rolled in there at three. That's when we were supposed to be there. Mark was the only one on time. Hung out the paper by herself. Made dinner, walked around, played on your phone. Mark, wait longer.

SPEAKER_06

I think we said that a couple times.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, every time Court's like, uh, we're delayed again.

SPEAKER_02

So we rolled into Lynnville Park after the office closed. So it turns out we probably didn't even need to pay for campsites because we just drove to our campsite, never saw anybody.

SPEAKER_01

No one ever did. The whole night.

SPEAKER_02

He drove by in the morning, a little golf cart. So we never asked, just waved. Not a whole lot happened there Thursday night. We was pretty much just all ready for bed.

SPEAKER_03

Everybody was ready to go to bed. Uh guy Chad realized that he needed a fan. We realized that I needed one too.

SPEAKER_05

We realized that we had not planned for not unloading rigs to use our uh first prototypes of hammock stands. Which I would say. But then we adapted and found out a second version where you can use it. And it worked pretty good.

SPEAKER_03

It did work pretty good.

SPEAKER_05

Almost better than the first original or the intended way.

SPEAKER_03

True story there. You'll just have to see pictures of it. It's hard to describe what it is, but our hammock stands key into the steak pockets in the trailer.

SPEAKER_05

They forgot we bought front yard at tracker supply.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, we bought a front yard. We bought a front yard. We're still on the search for the lawnmower. Uh pink flamingo.

SPEAKER_06

Pink flamingos and the palm trees. The grocery stop was the fastest fellow stop I think we've ever been on. Yeah. All of us at the same time went to the grocery store and bought lunch meat and the stuff we needed for lunches the next day. That was the fastest. Like we can't all go to banards together. That turns into three hours. Try to supply even Walmart takes forever sometimes.

SPEAKER_03

We were pretty snappy, dude.

SPEAKER_05

Anyways. How was the wheeling at Interlake? Let's talk about that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we got up Friday morning, went to Interlake, and our first thought was to run 5X or 5B, depending on who you talk to. It used to be 5X, I guess they now changed it to 5B. Apparently there was a sign on the guard shack that said 5B was closed. I didn't see it.

SPEAKER_05

I was looking for 5X.

Interlake Trails Closed Plus Breakdowns

SPEAKER_05

I'm like, oh, we're not going to 5B.

SPEAKER_02

Turns out there was quite a few pine trees that it fell down sometime. Because we started down 5B.

SPEAKER_05

I had more pine tar on my hands by the end of that because I forgot to cut the gloves out of the center council than a major league baseball bat.

SPEAKER_02

We got to the first down tree, cleared it out of the way, and went, what, three feet? And realized that way more than.

SPEAKER_03

Then we went down around the corner, and there were some big ones across.

SPEAKER_05

We did not have the proper equipment.

SPEAKER_02

And we So we went back out to five regular five and then went to where you can get back on five B. Uh I can't remember what stocked for a little while.

SPEAKER_03

We couldn't go that way either because there was trees down on that one.

SPEAKER_02

After we climbed the big rock hill, we found more down trees, but we had stopped.

SPEAKER_03

We were stopped down at the bottom.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Oh, your hose clamp.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And a hose clamp.

SPEAKER_05

And a hose clamp felt leaking on the lower radiator hose, and then Court's like.

SPEAKER_06

Ask him.

SPEAKER_05

Court the NAS car driver.

SPEAKER_06

I just drive it.

SPEAKER_05

Cold trickle.

SPEAKER_02

Calling him coal.

SPEAKER_06

I just drive the thing.

SPEAKER_02

CT. So once we realized 5B wasn't going to happen, we made our way back to the trailers, grabbed lunch, and then thought we'd go hit 2X. Which was like a mile drive that I didn't realize. Yes. So you have to drive a lot to get anywhere at that park. Well, you got to go in a different time zone when you get there. Yeah, right. Different weather pattern, evidently, too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

We got pissed on, but the trailers were pretty much dry. We made it, we made it to Skinny Petal Hill, played there for a while. That went. Is that when we figured out your lockers weren't working?

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

No, that's when the airline got cut.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, we had to fix the airline. It was too close to the exhaust, melted a hole in it. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

We had to fix the airline. And then made our way to 2X. Played on that for a while. Went down Powdy Pants. Um. Yeah, help me out here, guys. My brain is not. You were leaning. I don't remember.

SPEAKER_01

I just followed you.

SPEAKER_03

It was nice. We just kind of spent the afternoon just kind of banging around, you know.

SPEAKER_02

On the buggy trails. And uh Court, go ahead and take your spotlight. I know you've been enjoying it all weekend.

SPEAKER_06

Like which one? Like where the YJ couldn't make it, but I drove right through it? Right. Yeah. I wouldn't say through through the thing. First time, the first time or the second time. I wouldn't say right through it, but uh we had the we had the hammer on a little bit, but it was it was you made it up.

SPEAKER_03

I was surprised you made it up. You did well. Oh, once we once we made made fusible links for the compressor. Uh somehow we blew both fuses for the compressor and Amos.

SPEAKER_05

I think we know how at this point. Oh, it works again. Court tried it as we got in to go run after parts.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it it sounds like it does. It ain't doing it full-on kicked on lockers locked in.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. After it cooled down. Oh, did it? Yeah. Right before we left to go get parts.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, so we can fit we can fill up the airbags in the truck.

SPEAKER_06

If we can locate the air hose.

SPEAKER_03

It was in the back seat of Amos, the last I saw on the floor under the seat. That's where it was when we were wheeling.

SPEAKER_05

But that is the first thing we we the second part of uh said tow rig issues was uh the airbags have a slow leak. A slow leak. Not slow, steady. It's not fast, but PFside the boot ish.

SPEAKER_03

So but so we might have to go buy a bicycle pump on the way home so that we can keep pumping it up on the way home. Court not gonna have to take turns. I'm just gonna go to sleep, so it doesn't bother me.

SPEAKER_02

We we played on a couple obstacles to 2x. Court was starting to get a feel for how uh Amos is that right? Amos works, and then it started sprinkling, and then the sprinkle turned into a little more rain. Which actually was kind of welcome. It was because man, it was hot.

SPEAKER_03

It cooled, it cooled the air down quite a bit during that.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. So we made the mile, two mile drive back in the rain.

SPEAKER_03

As soon as we got back to the the the parking lot, it was done.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think it was done before then because there was still dust on the trailers. I don't think it rained there. It was still hot. But we we gave up because with with the rain, Inner Lake is just a slop vest, and we were all ready for a shower anyway. So we've introduced Geyer to a that was my first truck stop shower.

SPEAKER_03

God, that was what a wonderful experience.

SPEAKER_02

And what feature does the Love's truck stop shower have, they got asshole cleaners there.

SPEAKER_03

They got these little shower heads that are about freaking belly high. You turn around and it was on the jet setting. Turn around, I'm like,

Truck Stop Shower And Camp Hacks

SPEAKER_03

wonder what that's for, as I'm soaping up, and I turned around uh sort of woo, there we go. Clean the old ass crack right the fuck out. Come out, and I was I was like super, I'm like, yeah, it's like a bidet, except it was shooting from above. And I was telling the guys about it, and Ricky goes, I don't think that's what it's for. Like, well, what the fuck else would it be for? He goes, handicapped people? Like, well, I guess. But yeah, that was it was great. They got got a little chair in there, you got a private shitter, a nice clean shower, warm towels. They got a fan in there, a fan blowing on you as you're drying off. $17 is a little salty for a shower, but God, I felt so good when I got out of there. Sitting in the truck next to these stinky motherfuckers. Yeah, because we decided, let's just keep going.

SPEAKER_05

We'll just get jugs of water.

SPEAKER_06

You were just as sweaty as us after we set up camp at the next spot. Yeah. So he's kind of wasting 17 bucks. I felt not really.

SPEAKER_02

I felt it was it was a clean sweat.

SPEAKER_06

You got $17 of the grudd uh crud off you.

SPEAKER_05

Anytime he anytime he can find a way to spray water in his ass, he just it's worth his money.

SPEAKER_03

I will have a bidet someday. So Mark, what was your take on Interlake? It was the second time I've been there, but you really gotta have the right rig if you want to go down to big hills because 31s ain't gonna cut it. So, what were you wheeling this weekend, Mark? Um a free XJ. A free ninety nine. Free ninety nine XJ. Okay from 31s. No lift, no lift, just stock, link and locker, rear div. Yeah, welded to rear, open in the front, and a lot of skinny pedal, but That's that's how you that's how everybody drives an XJ, though.

SPEAKER_02

XJ things more more on the XJ later.

SPEAKER_03

But I like XJ, the XJ lived a lifetime today.

SPEAKER_04

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

We'll get to DJ in that. Yeah. The XJ lived a lifetime of adventures today. But it was a lot of fun. Riding around with Ricky and going up those hills. That was kind of funny. We got back in there. And uh at Interlake, we got back in there. Peter.

SPEAKER_06

That's the crappy part. He can't hear me because he didn't have headphones on. You say you had fun riding with Ricky. I'm like, even the winching part? It wasn't that bad.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I get what you're saying now. See, I don't I didn't get it because I wasn't.

SPEAKER_02

You got his redemption today. We'll get to that. You made one unassisted that I didn't, but you want to go break down for breakdown? No.

SPEAKER_06

No. Okay. Definitely the YG outwheel me. Ricky will outwheel me pretty much a pick a vehicle.

SPEAKER_03

But it's when the the first couple things you went through, Ricky goes to Mark. Mark, why don't you park that and just hop in with me? You ain't getting through there with that rig. Just park it and hop in. We talked about it the night before, and and I and I even said I got no problem parking and riding with somebody because I knew that it since it was the second time I've been there and I've been down part of 5X, 5B, whatever it is, I know how bad it is. The other trucks got body damage from it.

SPEAKER_05

You mean how fun it is?

SPEAKER_03

How fun and how radical it can be.

SPEAKER_05

Sounds like fun.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Lots of fun.

SPEAKER_05

Well then, so then we hit the road. Tyrie got his experience.

SPEAKER_03

And a fresh cup of grapes. That was like the best stop ever. I got a fresh shower and a cold cup of grapes. God dang, I was happier in the pig rolling and shit.

SPEAKER_05

I said, grapes do sound good. They they hit the spot on the road.

SPEAKER_03

Oh man. I don't know what it was about it, but that was the most

Thorns Pricing Grass And Camp Vibes

SPEAKER_03

satisfying part of my day. Oh Court, your watch died.

SPEAKER_02

So then where would we go, Ricky? We left the loves and drove to Bedford, and that was actually a pretty uneventful drive. Yeah, it really was. Nothing actually happened that that leg of the trip. Um I don't know where you guys split off to because I gave up at the Walmart. We stopped at Walmart, Bedford, and I gave up trying to find a parking spot. We were following you.

SPEAKER_05

We were right behind you. I didn't see you. I almost pulled we almost followed you back out of the parking lot. I'm like, you must be going up somewhere. We'll go back around. So you got checked you. You said you're going on to the park.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. So I went on to the park and set up camp and unloaded everything and did my taxes and updated my Facebook and started a Twitter account. Should have bowed the grass. Yeah, you should have mowed the damn grass, Ricky. So you'll have to tell that part of the adventure because I wasn't there for that.

SPEAKER_06

That's the one we probably should not have paid for because they charged us for every hammock we had, plus both the rigs. It was like 130 some bucks. We didn't see any people that were from the park there, and they didn't even mow the grass. Look, they hadn't mowed the grass in weeks.

SPEAKER_05

It was it was it was I don't know.

SPEAKER_06

Itchy.

SPEAKER_05

It was almost waist high on Dustin and me, if Dustin would have been there. Oh, did it tickle your balls when you walked?

SPEAKER_03

That's why you're gonna say when you that's why you were giggling when you walked across the field.

SPEAKER_02

The grass was tickling your balls.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But I'm gonna say if you're in the neighborhood and it's close, Thorns is a good place to go for a day trip.

SPEAKER_05

It would be a good shakedown. Hey, I got some new stuff to travel. It's not a destination. No. We could have played all if it would have been dry, we could have played on that rock hill all day. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But it was and I knew that it wasn't gonna be that great. Like I told you before, it just it was a spot in between inner lake and Tides that where we could camp. I didn't know it was gonna remortgage as a house to get you guys to camp there, but it is what it is. It is what it is.

SPEAKER_05

Yep, part of it. We had that planned that we knew we what we had to but then uh we'll have to talk about the rest of camp at oh yeah, we can't talk about that. That'll be on Patreon.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, we had a visitor, and if you want to find out about that, spend five dollars a month cheaper than your daily vice. Thank you, Mark. Nice plug, Mark. Man, you got a face for radio. I mean a voice for radio.

SPEAKER_05

We all have faces for radio.

SPEAKER_03

That's true, that is very true.

SPEAKER_02

So then we got uh we we we gave up on thorns and thought we would leave early and get an early start on ties, but me, wait, wait, wait, we forgot we were joined by another. We were we were Mr. Vance Bohannan made an appearance.

SPEAKER_05

And Vance, who is usually the life of campsite, wasn't again. You'll have to listen to the Patreon to find out why. Five dollars a month, cheaper than your daily vice.

SPEAKER_02

Ten dollars a month if you want to get it on the giveaways.

SPEAKER_05

So then we did. We gave up, we took off.

SPEAKER_02

We we thought we would get to Ties early. We thought, but Mark, Vance, and myself stopped at a marathon for fuel to where everybody in Bloomington was evidently getting fuel at this gas station.

SPEAKER_05

Well, beyond that, Mark or Ricky had a very good knack

Fuel Stop Chaos And Near Crash

SPEAKER_05

the whole trip to time the green lights just right.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, what the hell is up with that three plus three? Like that thing's a green light magnet. He'd roll through and I'd have to. I don't think I saw you stop at two red lights the whole weekend.

SPEAKER_05

It didn't matter if I was right behind him, a quarter mile back, Mark was at right there.

SPEAKER_03

And we and we caught every one of them red.

SPEAKER_05

Every red light. Which wasn't a big deal then, but then we went, so you guys stopped at that, and as we just get past the exit, I look over and I see your camper moving. I'm like, somebody text Ricky, tell him that we're getting fuel in Bloomington. And we rolled on. And I'm like, oh well, I use a mud flap app whenever I can for fuel, and I looked it up, and I'm like, oh, there's one up here. We'll get directions to that. We really had Geyer and Court confused in the backseat because they heard two sets of directions being told, and they could only see the screen for the set to go to ties.

SPEAKER_06

Mr. Turk phones going off.

SPEAKER_05

But so we got we ended up at some Rockets truck stop. They put a truck stop right in the middle of town. And then of course we get fueled up. Tried to get grapes again, they didn't have any. Guyer took two years to get a slushy.

SPEAKER_03

Did I had to make two of them because one of them, their frickin' dispenser, sucked and shot half the flavoring out outside the cup.

SPEAKER_02

Well, while you were doing that, I'm sitting there waiting at the diesel pump. Yeah, this chick gases up her minivan, looks at me, hangs the pump up, and just meanders her way inside, blocking the only diesel pump. So I sit there and wait in a crew cab, longbed, square body Chevy with a 30-foot gooseneck, really irritating her by the one to get out of that mini mark because they wasn't leaving, because I had every parking spot blocked.

SPEAKER_01

It's her fault.

SPEAKER_03

I went inside to find her at one point, and she was like hugging like her daughter or whatever. I'm like, what the hell? You need to get out of here.

SPEAKER_02

He walks up to the truck and I'm like, what is she doing? I think she's buying a popsicle and hugging her kid. I don't know what the hell she's doing. Well, then wasn't there some uh unique bankers too?

SPEAKER_03

Didn't Vance run some motorcycles over? Oh yeah. Yeah, there is this barefoot biker with with uh Mardi Gras beads around his neck, trying to get his bike going, and then another like young hippie bike guy giving Vance a dirty look for backing the trailer up. He's like, oh, and he looks at me, and I was just like, get your shit out of the way.

SPEAKER_02

I ain't kidding you. Every gas pump was getting used and had somebody waiting to pull in as soon as they walked out, and you could see the gas fumes in the air, and barefoot's over there with a rusty butter knife arcing the starter solenoid, sparks flying off of it.

SPEAKER_03

So then the lady finally came out and she walks right past Ricky and I, gets in her car, and then she's sitting there. I'm like, okay. So I walk over there and I motion to her and I tell her, we got to get the truck in here. And she's she's she's giving me like, oh, I don't know. I've been pointing at her phone, and I'm like, move. You don't have to leave the parking lot if you're trying to get your GPS fired up. Just get the fuck off the pump.

SPEAKER_02

She pulls away from the pump. So I start easing into the pump, and Mark goes over to block the pump, and this little girl comes up in this car, and all she sees is Hathaway's sausage finger pointing at her. No!

SPEAKER_03

That's like a life-size foam finger, the number one. It's like a life-size foam man. For those that don't know, Mark has the biggest hands you'll ever see.

SPEAKER_02

So we we finally got fuel and got back on the road. I don't know where you guys were at at this point. Probably still waiting for it.

SPEAKER_03

We were almost right behind you because you had to stop for another.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we we blew the boot off again in Bloomington because some dork nozzle wouldn't get out of my way, and I fed her the onions, and it said, nope, we're not gonna let that happen.

SPEAKER_05

Well, then along the way, Court was sound asleep in the backseat. We just we could see you just ahead. We're driving along and chatter in the front. And look over to the left, and there's this really nice with like horse ranch fencing and everything. There's a couple old tow trucks sitting in front of a shop that had all kinds of shop signs on it, you know, and street signs then. So, hey, look, there's more cars back there. And then we're get just packed that, and I'm gonna go back to the room.

SPEAKER_03

They're both rubber-necking over there, and we're both looking over.

SPEAKER_05

Look at all those lined up, all those project cars. I look back for it, and there's like this Honda Civic stopped in the road waiting to turn. Nobody, nobody coming the other direction. She's just stopped. And I went, whoa, and foot went to the brakes.

SPEAKER_03

Court slept through a near-death experience.

SPEAKER_05

And I and I seriously thought that was gonna be a hood ornament.

SPEAKER_03

I I no joke, your back was six inches away from the back rest of the sea. I don't know how the fuck you I don't know how the fuck you slept through that. Your head bounced off the headrest when you went back. It's like you were out fucking cold. I'm like, it's like when you were pissing it that first night.

SPEAKER_05

I was like, this is uh that was close. I'm gonna keep going. And I'm like, we worked the brakes pretty hard. We're getting brake fade. And by the time we got up, we caught back up to you guys, and Mark couldn't figure out well, you guys had to stop again for the boot. And guys, like, it's probably good. We'll just let the brakes cool down. I'm like, yep, sounds good. I'm like, yeah, they do feel a little better. That was hopeful thinking.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_05

Because it kept they kept being worse and worse. I'm like, uh, so we full-on red at least or rolled through at least two red lights. Because it's like, I'm not stopping for that.

SPEAKER_03

One of them, we went through a light that was so fucking red it was almost ready to turn green again. Pretty close.

SPEAKER_06

But that thing was and we went under a bridge that said 10 feet, and you look, we'll creep under it as we're going.

SPEAKER_00

I've got my like shoulders out of the window trying to get a look at the at the rigs, and he's going through at 40 mile an hour.

SPEAKER_05

By the time you got yourself wiggled out the window, I could already see. Alright, we're gonna clear it. We went through. That was way back after the truck stop.

SPEAKER_04

We're gonna just creep underneath of it and see. I'm like, this is way.

SPEAKER_02

How does the DOS Chad calibrated eyeball work at 40 mile an hour?

SPEAKER_00

If we would have hit, I would have ejecto-seated.

SPEAKER_05

Anyways, so by the time we're getting to ties, I'm like, I dialed the the trailer brakes all the way off. I hit the brakes, I'm like, yeah, we got brake problem. Because it ain't stopping. We and then ding, the service brake

Brake Failure Boost Leaks And Parts Run

SPEAKER_05

system.

SPEAKER_03

We pretty much relied on the trailer brakes to get the rest of the way there.

SPEAKER_05

The last about four miles.

SPEAKER_02

We pulled into ties with two wounded trail rigs because the last time the boot blew off, it apparently cut it because it would normally blow off around 25 pounds of boost. And after putting on the last time, 10 pounds was all we could get. And for those of you that don't think there's a difference between 10 pounds of boost and 20 pounds, it's like pulling two plug wires off your big block Chevy. So we made it to ties with the old square body sound like an old R model Mac that was about half more out, with Hathaway wanting to push me and Vance up the hills. Mr. I got a new 6.8 meter.

SPEAKER_03

Sorry. With adaptive crews, he like you but you about snooze. He said he didn't have it. Oh, you don't have it. I thought you said you did have it. I did that bougie. Oh my flex has it.

SPEAKER_02

Well, so the original plan was to get to ties early enough so the bands could get some wheeling done, but we we just got there too late.

SPEAKER_05

So well we let the we got camps it up. I crawled in and I'm like, man, I'm pretty sure it's brake line. One of the hard lines. So we decided we're like, go wheel if you want, we're running out of town to get parts. So we at least have them to fix before and got brake line and some fresh fittings, and I don't know how they find anything in the back room without O'Reilly's. Because I went back to try to find brake lines and nothing was where it should be.

SPEAKER_02

My only question is where in the hell did you guys go? Because we were seriously getting ready to send somebody come looking for you guys.

SPEAKER_05

We told you we went to Casey's. It doesn't take that long.

unknown

No.

SPEAKER_05

We went to McDonald's.

SPEAKER_00

We went to McDonald's, we went to Walmart.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

unknown

And the O'Reilly's.

SPEAKER_01

And O'Reilly's we were gone for a long time. Probably what, hour and a half? Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

The fellows can't go anywhere. That's you know, we were looking for stuff.

SPEAKER_05

We we were literally could have filmed our own our own people of Walmart episode.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Because we had moved from hanging out in Ty's front yard to Ty's shop because the rain came in while you guys were out.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, we got rain. We got the rain too. Gyri got a shower. Another one. In the in the Jeep.

SPEAKER_00

So over 60 miles an hour. We're getting backwards rain into the into the back.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. But I had to go 60 miles an hour to have death wobble. And on 12 psi.

SPEAKER_06

On 12 psi. And rims full of mud.

SPEAKER_02

It was fine. It was fine. So then, yeah. And Saturday night was pretty uneventful. Yeah, I just kind of hung out.

SPEAKER_05

Got some good sleep.

SPEAKER_02

Got a hell of a shower.

SPEAKER_05

The heat finally kind of broke.

SPEAKER_02

It was beautiful.

SPEAKER_05

It was beautiful sleeping.

SPEAKER_02

I even turned the air off and just opened all the windows in the camper and listened to the crickets and ties goats and whatever else we had to listen to.

SPEAKER_05

Well, I was just fancing Dustin down there chasing them around. You were over there too, Mark.

SPEAKER_03

Not near the grid.

SPEAKER_05

I walked over and you were telling them how to prepare a sausage, so No, I'm gonna wait a minute.

SPEAKER_03

Bratwurst or whatever it was. It was a bratwurst and how to cook it better.

SPEAKER_02

So then Sunday morning we

Why Ty’s Property Beats The Rest

SPEAKER_02

woke up and wheeled at Ties. Yep. And I just want to hear your guys' take on ties because of all the properties that were easy guys to go to.

SPEAKER_05

All the places we went, I think I even before we got into the property last night sitting there talking about it. I said, Ricky, why do we waste our time with these other two? I will say that I would take do the six hours, seven-hour drive, whatever it is, to wheel ties.

SPEAKER_03

We could have spent all three days there and not seen all of it. No, 100%.

SPEAKER_05

And he said he's got new property that are just starting to open up. Yep. I would with given enough notice to be able to plan for the weekend, I would come down for a weekend to to wheel and ties. 100%. The other two? If it was something like that.

SPEAKER_02

I would have liked Interlake better if we could have got to wheel and I would say, yeah, of the other two, I would probably entertain going back to Interlake at some point. Thorns can straight up showed up their ass on. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Amateur YouTubers can go film there.

SPEAKER_02

But I I mean we can have just as much technical wheeling and ties as we do Internet.

SPEAKER_05

Ties is like the complete off-road ranch on a bigger scale. I'd like to try ties not wet.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. It's totally different. Super appreciative of Chris and talking to Richland. Let's get the rig, but I was nervous driving that thing. I was afraid I was like, I all we did to it, I think I've ruined both sides of the soft top. The plastic part. What's Ty's buddy's name? The beard? Dean. Dean. That's his brother. That's his brother? Yeah. He was like, you get an award for going through that one trail with a windshield and not losing it. He goes, You're the I think he goes, you're probably the first person to ever see go through that trail and not lose the windshield. Yep. And I was like, well, I was really, really careful not to lose that windshield because I don't want to buy it. I think it was great.

SPEAKER_03

Because we were about to, and it was real close. Backed up and weaseled around. Dean came over and he's like, I think you better stop if you want to keep the windshield. So he backed up and and got the wheels turned and got it popped up on that side. We missed the window, but we caught all the windows. Caught more of the plastic. But the windshield's the expensive part.

SPEAKER_05

But for for wheel on the rig, you'd never driven before.

SPEAKER_03

Dean said he goes, there was one of those areas you went through. He goes, I was I didn't think you guys were gonna make it through there, but he goes, because you just kind of walked it through. A lot of people, you know, keep the wheel speed up, keep it spinning. And he goes, I didn't think you were gonna make it. Yeah, I didn't think you were going fast enough, and you just shh walked it right through it.

SPEAKER_02

There was a white JK that came out there, and we all know who I'm talking about, but he lost his windshield in that spot. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

I I tried not to go crazy with the throttle on it.

SPEAKER_05

You're you're you're on 37s, everybody else was on 40s or 42s. Right. And you were fighting air compressor issues and power steering.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, yeah, power steering. So the power steering's at the point right now, the only time it works is if it's got high RPMs. So at one point, Geyr and I were going down this one hill and it was going towards a tree, and I was trying to turn and it would not do anything. So I'm on the brakes, sliding through mud, wouldn't turn, and I kind of looked at Geyer and I let my foot off the brake, I punched the gas, cranked the wheel, and slammed on the brakes again, and we missed all the trees. But it's like I think I'm done. I think I think we've made it as far as we're going with this thing.

SPEAKER_03

You looked absolutely exhausted from muscle net, muscle net steering. I think I'm good. My nerves are done with trying to wreck Rich's Jeep. And by and by that time, Mark's XJ, I got all the trees. I've watched Mark Mark's liberated. Mark XJ had lived like a thousand lifetimes today. One of the most impressive things, Mark, I watched you fold your mirror in with the tree and not break it. Like you know, you know, you could have just reached out and tucked that mirror in. You didn't have to do it with the tree. I think he was just showing off. I know. But yeah, I I I love Ty's property. That is some it's beautiful. Badass stuff. Yeah. And it would be a little less mud would be better. Yeah. And a little bigger tire would be better. Right. It would be a lot better. A front locker would be better. But uh, but yeah, it was it was a blast. And Dean just said, you know, just you gotta use the pedal. I I missed a log. I thought I was gonna get hung up on that log. I missed that one, and then got tied up on another spot, but I and then we got stuck, so we had to winch, and then the winch kept break or going out, and the battery kept dying. And yeah, that win that winch killed your freaking alternator and your battery because you used that to winch so long, you had to do such a long pull. So we got we got through that, but in the process of that, I broke the back window. I was gonna go through a whole list of what happened to the Well the the first the first thing the first thing was I smashed up the driver's fender and then the second thing I dented the driver's door and driver's back door the third I broke the window out of the back uh ripped off the luggage rack uh the rain gutters got tore up the rocker panel on the passenger side got tore up it was rusty anyway you ripped

Ravines Winching And Real Body Damage

SPEAKER_03

off the lower control arm and the control arm came off the passenger fenders dented um god your dad's gonna be pissed when you bring that popped the driver's front tire off and all this was almost at the end of the ravine yeah that was like one that was like a 200 yards that was a yeah 200 yards the first 200 yards the first thing you did when you smacked that fender I see Dean running giddy as a schoolgirl I hear body damage and I like it he just looked he he was almost he was almost skipping he was so giddy he's like I hear body damage and I like it it was a lot of fun almost there but with all the carnage that I created and everybody helping me get through and winching and we just had to pull it backwards let it sit so everybody could go by and then go rescue it later should have just left it there and started it on fire dude that's just what we do like like I was telling Chris Ty's dad bought that property in like 96 or 97 and we've been cutting trails on it ever since and that's just what we do. I mean that's why Dean just hops out and pulls wedge it's the the best guys to wheel with I mean they're all they're right there wheeling to help you tell which guys had wheeled there before they were the ones that showed up in the muck boots. Right every I'm like oh they've been here before they know what's up I'm out there in my frickin' Nikes slipping and sliding all over the place.

SPEAKER_02

You were doing your part to look the part the wheel we did I wore shoes at tied today. We did a lot of good wheels but we didn't even scratch the surface that's what Ty said there's 200 acres there and you've probably seen 20 of it. I don't think we saw 20 of it we'll be back oh yeah what Ty told me when I was out in his buggy to show me the new addition to the property that you guys are welcome back anytime as long as it's not deer season.

SPEAKER_05

That's what he told me come back anytime you want as long as it's not deer season.

SPEAKER_03

So that's getting cold though to fix and then I'll be back.

SPEAKER_05

You need to take both trucks and combine to one probably it may happen.

SPEAKER_02

I gotta admit I was impressed with Tiffany today.

SPEAKER_05

I did not expect that truck to do that truck I I wanted to be right in front of him all weekend because I would this is the first time out since I helped him put the three link on that little Toyota and it showed me up several times and it flexed right through everywhere I went um the only place he didn't go that I went was that last little creep through and watching your uh the young guy taking pictures he got some pretty awesome pictures the way that was flexing through there yeah I can't wait wait to see the pictures you got today put them on Facebook and I'll tag all you guys in it but but Dustin couldn't get through there because he he's like I just put the light bar on there I'm not ready to break it off yet and it's it's a pretty cool KC type what six or eight lights yeah oh it's fine it's it may it really makes a truck give it its own personality so I uh I get why he backed out of that and didn't go through there but yeah I wouldn't I wouldn't have tore up that bridge I did not expect him when after you had tried that hill we had went you up and I tried it several times and I just could not get and Dustin had video from the back and you could watch as soon as I would start to make the turn my diff was hitting so much mud somebody tore it up pretty bad trying to get up the right my right rear was basically off the ground it was Dane. It was Dane I think I hit it four times wide open but it wasn't I would kept trying I was going to go up towards that fence post turn back around get more of a straight shot at it and just cross the ruts I could never get turned around for it. So finally I'm like all right we get you know I don't want to waste everybody's time there and I got to top and stopped and Ricky's after we winched I winched up Ricky's all sudden here the four little Japanese squirrels coming at me and they're like go move move move I'm like I can't Ricky's right at my bumper winching it in.

SPEAKER_03

So it was almost like you just wanted to show off he lifted out of the gas pedal and then just slow crawled the last bit of it out right over next to me he's like I didn't think I was going to make it I said why cleaned it all off for you nobody did.

SPEAKER_02

I mean Dustin had his winch cable spooled out had the remote in people were standing on the top of the hot tub because they did not expect that Toyota pressed it and here he comes like da da da da doot and over the steering wheel but I'm making it so we got we got back to camp because I we went on around because Dean really wanted to show us more of it and that's where we flexed that little that that was probably one of the funnest obstacles I did on was that look great.

SPEAKER_05

The hill climbing's fun time to time but I like the more techno get in the ravine figure out a way to get around that tree.

SPEAKER_06

I love driving down the ravine when it we're flexing both directions that's the kind of stuff I really like small ravines.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah right we didn't make it to the big ones I loved the ravine until I was stuck in it which time the XJ the XJ became one with the ravine when they when Ricky drug you back you were pulling a pile of mud back with you like you were you were sinking into it. I think if we'd have left it there for the afternoon you you'd had to get it with his backhoe.

SPEAKER_02

Ty Ty took us to his new property that butts up to it and it butts up to a ravine that's already there and he mapped it out on his Onyx the new ravine is one mile long that with high cliffs on each side so once you get in there you're gonna be committed that's kind of you you you there's only there's only one way out yeah or back the way you came.

SPEAKER_05

Right right so it it's gonna be a blast it's gonna be a blast we'll come back for that when Moco's done but so yeah I think overall we had an awesome weekend. Ricky thank you for organizing it. Yeah um I organized it again

Heat Lessons And Getting Away Together

SPEAKER_05

but let's do it when it's a little not so hot out. Well because I think that part that kind of dampered the whole week we was just we were all so tired.

SPEAKER_02

It did because it's so hot and everything but I wanted I wanted these two to be able to come that and that was if we'd done it any other time that wouldn't have worked so but it was a fun fellas camping trip.

SPEAKER_06

I do know setting up camp pulling down camp every day gets old. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

That's a lot of work it was it was a lot taking everything down but I figured if you was going to make the track to Indiana you might as well see well a few different parks to have to you said hey next year let's do it same time so the guys can come but we're just gonna stay at Ties all week fine.

SPEAKER_05

Yep and he we'll do a Thursday Friday Saturday at Ties or a Friday Saturday at Ties whatever but um I've never been to these other parks so it's always good to go to the park and get your own take on it. Yeah because I'd always heard it's the greatest park ever it's oh it's not it's on both those parks and I can say one I think is pretty good the other one inner lake would be fun to do a couple days at the bad thing is you can't camp there.

SPEAKER_03

So you got all the tear down and where is ties you pull up and you can't ask for a better dude because basically whatever you got that's where I was like is it like half the town of Clinton just comes out and hangs out and pretty much he's around sometimes like the cool people comes back and like there's just people hanging around.

SPEAKER_02

When we were kids growing up and Ty's dad owned the place that's where everybody hung out I mean that's where you drank your illegal booze you know that's where we wheeled whatnot and now Ty owns it and it's he just bought it all from his dad.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah and he's yep keep buying everything around it too it sounds like yep anything that touches it oh it touches Ty's property call him if you want to sell it and sounded like so with that being said since we made special accommodations so you two could make it what was your take on the weekend other than the heat I had a blast and I don't always do well with heat so well I you guys aren't really off-road guys but so I was just kind of curious from a different perspective what you guys would I build my own rock buddy buggy probably not but I enjoy going on the stuff I just I don't want to have that commitment camping too camping was fun you know just like I was like uh I don't know one of the nights I was somehow I was talking to Kelly church was it a church yeah and and uh talking to her about it and like I'm just the wheeling's gonna be fun but I'm just looking forward to just getting out you know just the guys you're not looking at all their projects you got to do at home it was just it was just a great getaway well we've talked for over a year oh let's just get together we'll go go camp a backbone or up you know one of the county parks by we're not gonna do it because we we all have too much going on it has to be we're doing this we're leaving we're getting at least four hours away from home to do something more relaxing it's like when Court and I took the the wives up to the back to the 50s last year it was like we keep saying we're gonna go dry get together and just go for a burger in the in the rat rides and we never do because but we went to that and it was we sat in the lobby and talked for a couple hours just just about nothing but there was nothing there that was like oh I should be working on this or I should go check on that or I need to get this done it was just getting away and that this weekend was the same way.

SPEAKER_06

So at Tys we couldn't even use our phones it was kind of nice yeah yeah yeah it was SOS mode there if you wanted to if you wanted to use your phone you had to go a couple miles up the road yeah so overall I think it was a great weekend yeah thanks for having us down Ricky it was great it's this wasn't a meet your friends from the internet this was more of a meet your friends the friends of your friends from the internet yep um

Wyatt’s Warriors Event And Closing

SPEAKER_06

Yep uh there's gonna be raffles we got some good prices that we've already heard coming in big named four wheel drive off-road companies uh camping is available it is more of a camp in a field no it's mowed will they mow the grass it's mowed and I think there's porta potties porta potties with no showers so I mean it's gonna be a little bit rough in it uh for some of you yeah it'll be yeah some not all of us have don't next to Ricky's generator especially downwind right yes would you rather have Vance's generator no no that's why Vance used my generator last night sound like a helicopter is going over well that's about everything that's up about that but yeah that's coming up they got a few more days a month will be here like it's gonna be here quick a few more days to get their core applications in too yes because that's gonna be done by August 1.

SPEAKER_03

Yep and sometime in August put the jeep in but don't think so now I think I won't have it ready in time October?

SPEAKER_02

No and we built Chris's uh truck in like two days there's four of you submitting a core application will end up a bunch of guys a Lyle being in your shop two years later just just what's that submitted core application leads to Iowa guys hanging out in your shop two years later so yeah it works out well and and you becoming a core crony so right maybe I could talk my son into let me take the Mustang there you go that that would get votes I think that would be it's a selection by peers where you you could have him apply and you just be the co-dog yeah that way all the money is uses his own you just get to come hang out all right sounds like you don't I think though he'll be doing the uh the shutdown at the plant so he'll be working so then the it's still available that's why I'm like I need I need to be the one taking it remember I gave you life let me borrow your Mustang I gave him that Mustang well then you have more reason to borrow it so well boys let me give you the XJ yeah but that's a different deal look at look at all the fun you have with that today aren't you supposed to be trade aren't you gonna trade that back for a YJ because you want it to be cool?

SPEAKER_03

Well maybe we'll see I doubt if he'll let that go he just put it back together.

SPEAKER_05
