I’ve been fortunate to visit all 50 states, my rule being: I must leave the airport and explore something (anything!). Recently, my 80-year-old mom upped the ante, saying a true visit means touring the state capital, no exceptions. Visiting the Capitol buildings is brilliant: free or low-cost tours packed with history and insight. My aunt—another woman in my life I deeply admire—came back from a Christmas market trip (booked without me, mind you) saying, “If you’ve been to one, you’ve been to them all.” Not on My Watch. For one, Christmas river cruises leave different presents on your pillow each night, commemorating each city’s market visit. Plus, seasonal treats like Budapest’s Chimney Cake taste completely different from the versions in Prague or Vienna’s famous Sachertorte.
