John 6:60—71-9, The Responses to the Bread of Life Discourse
Podcast Summary: John 6:60–71 - The Responses to the Bread of Life Discourse
Title: The Dividing Line: Reactions to the Bread of Life
Episode Description:
In John 6:60–71, Jesus’ profound teaching on being the Bread of Life sparks varied reactions among His followers. Many struggle to accept His words and turn away, while others, like Peter, affirm their faith in Him as the Holy One of God. This passage challenges us to consider our own responses to Jesus’ claims and His call to follow Him, even when the path is difficult.
Episode Notes
1. The Offense of Jesus’ Teaching (Verses 60-63):
The Crowd’s Reaction:
- Many of Jesus’ disciples describe His teaching as “hard” or difficult to accept, expressing doubt and discomfort.
- Their offense centers on Jesus’ claims about eating His flesh and drinking His blood, as well as His assertion that He came down from heaven.
Jesus’ Response:
- Jesus challenges their understanding by asking if they would also be offended by His ascension to where He was before.
- He redirects their focus to the Spirit, emphasizing that His words are life-giving and spiritual, not merely physical.
2. The Reality of Unbelief (Verses 64-65):
- Jesus reveals that some among them do not believe and never did, showing His divine knowledge of their hearts.
- He reiterates that coming to Him requires the Father’s initiative, highlighting the role of divine grace in faith.
3. The Departure of Many Disciples (Verse 66):
- After Jesus’ teaching, many of His disciples choose to leave, unable to reconcile His claims with their expectations.
- This marks a pivotal moment, as the number of His followers significantly decreases.
4. Peter’s Confession of Faith (Verses 67-69):
Jesus’ Question:
- Turning to the Twelve, Jesus asks, “Do you want to go away as well?”
- This question invites a personal decision, highlighting the cost of discipleship.
Peter’s Response:
- Peter declares, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
- He affirms their belief in Jesus as the Holy One of God, expressing unwavering trust in His identity and mission.
5. Jesus’ Foreknowledge of Judas (Verses 70-71):
- Jesus acknowledges that one of the Twelve, Judas Iscariot, will betray Him, even though He chose all of them.
- This statement underscores Jesus’ divine awareness and the tension between human choice and divine sovereignty.
Reflection Questions for Listeners
- How do you respond to the challenging teachings of Jesus in your own life?
- What does it mean for you to declare, like Peter, that Jesus has the words of eternal life?
- Are there areas where you struggle to trust Jesus fully? How can you seek the Spirit’s guidance to strengthen your faith?
Call to Action:
Take time this week to meditate on Peter’s response: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Reflect on what it means to follow Jesus wholeheartedly and ask God for the grace to remain faithful, even when the journey is difficult.
Closing Thought:
The Bread of Life Discourse challenges us to grapple with Jesus’ claims and make a choice: to follow Him in faith or turn away in unbelief. Like Peter, let us recognize that Jesus alone offers eternal life and commit ourselves to Him, trusting in His words and His Spirit to sustain us.
