The Horror Agenda
EPISODE 100 - Child's Play (1988)
Welcome to the Horror Agenda. This week on our 100th episode, we cover the 1988 film Child's Play and some of the broader beats of the franchise.
We get into how Vodou is maligned broadly in Hollywood and this film specifically, we talk fear of dolls, Chucky over the years, and more.
Victor alludes to a CZ's World discussion of Damballa, part of his History of Horror series, as it relates to the Child's Play franchise.
Carlos discusses Vodou and recommends a couple texts including the classic Tell My Horse by Zora Neale Hurston, Voodoo Dolls, Charms, and Spells in the Classroom: Teaching, Screening, and Deconstructing the Misrepresentation of the African Religion by Alexandra Reuber and can always recommend more to those who are interested.
A piece speaking to Jessica Walter almost being the voice of Chucky, released after her passing. "So I had her in, and she voiced him, and she was terrific. But when I looked at it in a preview situation, it just didn’t work with the character..." Holland is quoted in the piece.
This week Victor recommends Longlegs (2024) a film about an FBI agent trying to find and stop the elusive Longlegs killer and solve his mystery. We also briefly discuss the controversy of the film in the current environment of virulent transphobia which is addressed by Them writer Samantha Allen here for folks unaware. And another piece from Autostraddle with Drew Burnett Gregory and Stef Rubino in conversation that listeners may enjoy.
Carlos recommends Tell My Horse by Zora Neale, referenced above, for more on Vodou as a religion.
Carlos also recommends The Ugly Stepsister (2025), a retelling of the Cinderella story centered on one of the step-sisters who wanting to marry the prince does a lot of body modification to try to win him over.
Carlos also recommends Dimension 20 on Dropout TV, specifically A Starstuck Odyssey season, set in the world of the comic book series by Elaine Lee (the game master Brennan Lee Mulligan's mom) and Michael Kaluta.
