Michael & Amy

Approximately two-thirds of couples express less satisfaction and more conflict in their relationship within the first 5 years of having children.

Having kids emotionally revolutionises a relationship—not just temporarily, but for a lifetime. Not only does the couple need to adjust to the transition from two to three (or more) in the family unit, priorities shift, roles are redefined, and there is a profound change to the level of responsibility and freedom within the relationship and in life itself.

While most couples adjust accordingly, many find that their level of intimacy starts to wane.

We ask some thought provoking questions to help you get to the bottom of where exactly is the source of the disconnect that develops between couples at this time.

Here are some questions you should ask yourself and as a couple to get things back to the aliveness energy between the two of you:

Does the role of parenting feel overwhelming, lopsided or unfair affecting your connection with your partner?  If so, how?

Do you find yourself criticising your partner, being disrespectful or inconsiderate more now than before you had kids? If so, in what situations?

Have you been neglecting your relationship by excessively focusing on the needs of your child?

Do you feel neglected or rejected by your partner? In what ways?

Have you taken each other for granted in your relationship? For example, treating strangers with more consideration than your partner?

Have the changes in your physical appearance after childbirth hindered the intimacy in your relationship?

How do you believe social media has affected your relationship as a parent and a partner?
