Speaker 1:Welcome to the God Chaser Podcast. I'm your host, evan Evans. Today we're going to dive deep into what it means to run the race of faith with endurance, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus through both the triumphs and trials of life. We'll explore how to maintain joy and purpose even when circumstances are difficult, and why it's so crucial to stay connected to God and His Word every single day. Let's start with a powerful verse that encapsulates our theme. In Galatians 6, verse 9, the Apostle Paul writes so let's not get tired of doing what is good At just the right time, we will reap a harvest of. This verse reminds us that the Christian life is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes perseverance and consistent effort to live out our faith day after day, but we have an incredible promise after day. But we have an incredible promise If we stay faithful and continue doing good, god will bring a blessing in his perfect timing. Now you might be thinking that sounds great, evan, but it's not always easy to keep going when life gets tough, and you're absolutely right. That's why we need to understand where our strength comes from. It's not about gritting our teeth and powering through on our own. The key is fixing our eyes on Jesus.
Speaker 1:In Hebrews, chapter 12, verses 1 to 2, we read Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up, and let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. This passage paints a vivid picture of the Christian life as a race, but it's not a competition against others. It's about persevering in our own unique journey of faith. Notice how it says to strip off every weight that slows us down. This could refer to unhealthy habits, negative thought patterns or anything else that distracts us from fully pursuing God. The most important part, though, is keeping our eyes on Jesus. He's described here as the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. This means Jesus is both the starting point and the finish line of our spiritual journey. He gives us the faith to begin with, and he's the one who will bring that faith to completion. When we focus on Jesus, instead of our problems or our own shortcomings, we tap into a source of strength and endurance that goes beyond our human limitations. Think about Peter walking on water in Matthew, chapter 14, verses 28 to 31. As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to do the impossible. It was only when he got distracted by the wind and waves that he began to sink. The same principle applies in our daily lives. When we keep our focus on Christ through prayer, worship, studying scripture and Christian fellowship, we're much better equipped to handle whatever challenges come our way. Now let's talk about those challenges for a moment.
Speaker 1:The Bible is clear that followers of Jesus will face trials and difficulties. In John, chapter 16, verse 33, jesus himself says I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me here on earth. You will have many trials and sorrows, but take heart because I have overcome the world. Notice that Jesus doesn't promise an easy life free from problems. Instead, he offers us his peace and the assurance that he has already overcome everything we might face. This ties into what James writes in James 1, verses 2-4. Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy, for you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. This is a radical perspective shift. Instead of seeing trials as something to avoid at all costs, we're encouraged to view them as opportunities for spiritual growth. It's through facing and overcoming challenges that our faith becomes stronger and more mature. Of course, this doesn't mean we should go looking for trouble or that we can't ask God for help when we're struggling.
Speaker 1:The Bible is full of examples of people crying out to God in their distress, of people crying out to God in their distress. Take Psalm 34, verse 17, for instance. The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The key is learning to trust God in all circumstances, whether things are going well or we're in the middle of a storm. This brings us to another crucial aspect of running the race of faith maintaining our joy in the Lord.
Speaker 1:In Nehemiah 8, verse 10, we find the well-known phrase the joy of the Lord is your strength. This isn't talking about a surface-level happiness that depends on our circumstances. It's a deep-seated joy that comes from knowing God, understanding His character and trusting in His promises. When we cultivate this kind of joy, it becomes a source of strength that can sustain us even in difficult times. The prophet Habakkuk expressed this beautifully in Habakkuk, chapter 3, verses 17 to 18. Even though the fig trees have no blossoms and there are no grapes on the vines, even though the olive crop fails and the fields lie empty and barren, even though the flocks die in the fields and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in the God of my salvation. This passage describes a situation where everything seems to be going wrong. The crops have failed, the livestock are dying. It's a total economic disaster. Yet in the midst of all this, habakkuk chooses to rejoice in God. His circumstances haven't changed, but his perspective has. He's looking beyond his current troubles to the eternal reality of who God is and what he has done.
Speaker 1:We can cultivate this same attitude in our own lives. It starts with regularly reminding ourselves of God's goodness and faithfulness. The psalmist gives us a great example of this in Psalm 103, verses 1 to 5. Taking time each day to recall and thank God for His blessings can help us maintain a joyful perspective, even when we face challenges. It's not about denying our problems or pretending everything is fine when it isn't. Rather, it's about choosing to focus on God's unchanging goodness, even in the midst of changing circumstances.
Speaker 1:This brings us to another important point the power of gratitude. In 1 Thessalonians 5, verse 18, paul writes Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Notice, it doesn't say to be thankful for all circumstances, but in all circumstances. There's a big difference. We don't have to pretend to be happy about difficult or painful situations, but we can choose to find things to be grateful for even in the midst of challenges. Practicing gratitude has a powerful effect on our mindset and our faith. It helps us recognize God's presence and provision in our lives, even when things aren't going the way we'd like. Provision in our lives even when things aren't going the way we'd like. It can lift our spirits when we're feeling down and help us maintain that joy of the Lord we talked about earlier.
Speaker 1:Now let's circle back to the idea of running the race of faith. One thing that can sometimes trip us up is taking our eyes off Jesus and getting distracted by the things of this world. The author of Hebrews warns about this in Hebrews 12, verse 1, which we looked at earlier. Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. It's so easy to get caught up in pursuing success, comfort or approval from others that we lose sight of what's truly important.
Speaker 1:Jesus addressed this in his Sermon on the Mount In Matthew 6, verses 31-33,. He says so don't worry about these things saying what will we eat, what will we drink, what will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. This doesn't mean we shouldn't work or plan for the future, but it does mean that our primary focus should be on growing in our relationship with God and living out his purposes for our lives. When we do this, we can trust that he will provide for our needs.
Speaker 1:Of course, we all stumble. Sometimes we make mistakes, give into temptation or lose our focus. The important thing is how we respond when this happens. Do we give up in discouragement or do we get back up and keep running the race? The Bible encourages us to persevere. In Proverbs 24, verse 16, we read the godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again, but one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked. This verse reminds us that falling down isn't the end of the story. What matters is that we get back up and keep going, and we don't have to do this alone.
Speaker 1:Remember that verse from Hebrews about being surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses. This refers to the community of believers, both past and present, who can encourage and support us in our faith journey. In Galatians 6, verse 2, paul writes Share each other's burdens and, in this way, obey the law of Christ. We weren't meant to run this race in isolation. We need the support, accountability and encouragement of other believers. This is why it's so important to be connected to a local church or Christian community. In Hebrews, chapter 10, verses 24 to 25, we're told let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works and let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another. Especially now that the day of his return is drawing near, regular fellowship with other believers can help us stay on track in our faith. It provides opportunities for worship, learning, service and mutual encouragement. When we're struggling, we have people who can pray for us and offer support, and when things are going well, we can be that support for others.
Speaker 1:Now let's talk about the role of God's Word in helping us run this race of faith. In Psalm 119, verse 105, the psalmist writes your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. The Bible isn't just a book of rules or ancient history. It's a living, active guide for our daily lives. It helps us understand God's character, his promises and His will for us. It provides wisdom for decision-making, comfort in times of trouble and inspiration for living out our faith. That's why it's so crucial to spend time reading and meditating on Scripture regularly. In Joshua, chapter 1, verse 8, god tells Joshua study this book of instruction continually, meditate on it day and night, so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This doesn't mean we have to spend hours every day poring over the Bible, but it does suggest that God's Word should be a consistent part of our daily lives.
Speaker 1:Whether it's reading a chapter each morning, listening to an audio Bible during your commute or memorizing key verses, find ways to keep Scripture at the forefront of your mind as we internalize God's Word. It shapes our thoughts, attitudes and actions. It helps us discern right from wrong and make wise choices. Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3, verses 16-17, all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
Speaker 1:Another crucial aspect of running the race of faith is prayer. Prayer is our direct line of communication with God. It's how we express our needs, our gratitude, our concerns and our praise. In Philippians, chapter 4, verses 6 to 7, paul writes Don't worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Notice how prayer is linked here with both gratitude and peace. When we bring our concerns to God in prayer, thanking Him for His goodness, even as we ask for His help, we open ourselves up to experiencing His peace, a peace that goes beyond our human understanding.
Speaker 1:Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of persistent prayer. In Luke 18, verses 1 to 8,. He tells a parable about a persistent widow who keeps coming to a judge with her request until he finally grants it. The point of this parable, as Luke explains, is that we should always pray and never give up. This doesn't mean that if we just pray long enough or hard enough, god will give us whatever we want. Remember, prayer isn't about bending God's will to match ours, but about aligning our will with His. As we persist in prayer, we often find that God changes our hearts and gives us new perspectives on our situations.
Speaker 1:Now let's talk about something that can often trip us up in our race of faith—comparison. It's so easy to look at other believers and feel like we're falling short. Maybe they seem to have stronger faith, or they're involved in more ministry activities, or their lives just seem to be going better than ours. But the Bible warns us against this kind of comparison. In Galatians 6, verse 4, paul writes Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done and you won't look exactly like anyone else's, and that's okay. What matters is that you're faithfully following where God leads you. This ties into the idea of contentment which Paul talks about in Philippians 4, verses 11-13. I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little, for I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength when we're content. In this way, we're much better equipped to run our race with endurance, regardless of what's happening around us.
Speaker 1:As we near the end of our discussion, let's talk about the ultimate goal of this race we're running. In Philippians, chapter 3, verses 13 to 14, paul writes no, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. The prize Paul is talking about here isn't earthly success or recognition. It's the fullness of our salvation, eternal life in the presence of God. This is what we're ultimately running towards. Everything else, our daily obedience, our growth in faith, our service to others, is part of this larger journey towards our heavenly home. This eternal perspective can help us navigate the ups and downs of life.
Speaker 1:In 2 Corinthians 4, verses 17-18, paul writes, for our present troubles are small and won't last very long, yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever. So we don't look at the troubles we can see now. Rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen, for the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever". When we keep our eyes fixed on this eternal goal, it helps us maintain perspective when we face challenges. It reminds us that our current struggles, no matter how difficult they may be, are temporary in light of eternity. So as we run this race of faith, let's remember to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Let's keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Let's persevere through trials, knowing that God is using them to strengthen and mature us. Let's cultivate joy and gratitude even in difficult circumstances. Let's stay connected to God through prayer and his word, and to other believers through active participation in Christian community. And let's always keep in mind the beautiful promise found in Corinthians, chapter 9, verse 24. Don't you realize that in a race, everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win. In this race of faith, we're not competing against each other. We're all running towards the same goal to know Christ more fully and to become more like him. And in this race, everyone who perseveres to the end will receive the prize of eternal life with God.
Speaker 1:As we wrap up our discussion today, I want to encourage each of you listening to reflect on your own journey of faith. I want to encourage each of you listening to reflect on your own journey of faith. Where are you in your race right now? Are you sprinting ahead with enthusiasm or are you feeling worn down and discouraged? Are there areas where you've gotten distracted or lost focus? Remember, no matter where you find yourself today, god is with you and he's cheering you on. In Isaiah, chapter 41, verse 10, he promises Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
Speaker 1:Let's take a moment to consider some practical steps we can take to run our race of faith with renewed energy and focus. 1. Start each day with God. In Psalm 5, verse 3, david writes Listen to my voice in the morning, lord. Each morning I bring my request to you and wait expectantly. Beginning your day with prayer and scripture reading sets the tone for everything that follows.
Speaker 1:Two practice gratitude. Try keeping a gratitude journal where you write down three things you're thankful for each day. As it says in 1 Thessalonians, chapter 5, verse 18, be thankful in all circumstances for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Three stay connected to Christian community. Find a local church or small group where you can worship, learn and serve alongside other believers. Hebrews, chapter 10, verse 25, reminds us and let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Speaker 1:Four serve others. Jesus set the ultimate example of servant leadership and he calls us to follow in his footsteps. In Mark, chapter 10, verse 45, he says for even the Son of man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many. Five share your faith. In Matthew, chapter 28, verses 19 to 20, jesus gives us what we call the Great Commission. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you, and be sure of this I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Speaker 1:6. Keep an eternal perspective. When faced with challenges or decisions, ask yourself how they align with God's eternal purposes. As Paul writes in Colossians, chapter 3, verse 2, think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. Holding onto bitterness or resentment can weigh us down in our spiritual race. Jesus teaches in Mark 11, verse 25, but when you are praying, first, forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins too.
Speaker 1:8. Take care of your physical health. While our spiritual health is paramount, we shouldn't neglect our physical well-being. In 1 Corinthians 6, verse 19,. Paul reminds us Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself. Nine find ways to rest and recharge. Even Jesus took time to rest and be alone with God. Mark, chapter 6, verse 31, tells us. Then Jesus said let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest a while. He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat.
Speaker 1:10. Regularly examine your life. In 2 Corinthians, chapter 13, verse 5, paul encourages us Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you. If not, you have failed the test of genuine faith. As we implement these practices, we'll find ourselves better equipped to run our race with endurance.
Speaker 1:But remember, it's not about perfection, it's about progress. We're all on a journey of growth and transformation. In Philippians, chapter 1, verse 6, paul expresses his confidence in this ongoing process and I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. This verse reminds us that our spiritual growth is ultimately God's work in us. Yes, we have a part to play. We need to be intentional about nurturing our faith and obedient to God's leading, but we don't have to rely on our own strength alone. God is the one who began this good work in us and he is faithful to complete it. So when you feel discouraged or overwhelmed in your faith journey, remember that God is right there with you. He's not standing at the finish line, waiting for you to make it on your own. He's running alongside you, giving you strength, picking you up when you stumble and cheering you on every step of the way.
Speaker 1:In those moments when the race feels too hard, when you're tempted to give up, recall the words of Isaiah, chapter 40, verses 29 to 31. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. This beautiful passage reminds us that our strength for this race doesn't come from ourselves. It comes from the Lord. When we feel weak, he gives us power. When we're exhausted, he renews our strength and as we continue to trust in Him, we'll find ourselves able to soar above our circumstances, to run without growing weary, to walk this path of faith without fainting.
Speaker 1:Let's also remember the importance of encouragement in this race. In 1 Thessalonians, chapter 5, verse 11, paul writes so encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. We're not running this race alone. We're part of a community of believers. Let's be intentional about encouraging one another, spurring each other on towards love and good deeds. As we close our time together, I want to leave you with the powerful words of Hebrews, chapter 12, verses 1 to 3.
Speaker 1:Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up, and let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God's throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people. Then you won't become weary and give up.
Speaker 1:This passage encapsulates so much of what we've discussed today. It reminds us that we're not alone in this race. We're surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, both those who have gone before us and those running alongside us. It encourages us to get rid of anything that might hinder our progress, especially sin. It points us once again to Jesus, our ultimate example and the source of our faith, and it reminds us of the joy that awaits us at the finish line.
Speaker 1:Just as Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before him, so, dear listeners, whatever stage of the race you find yourself in today, I encourage you to keep running. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, draw strength from his word and his presence. Lean on your fellow believers and remember that every step you take in faith is bringing you closer to that ultimate prize eternal life in the presence of our loving God.
