Speaker 1:

Welcome God Chasers. This is Evan Evans and you're listening to the God Chaser podcast. Today we're diving deep into a topic that I believe resonates with many of us finding fullness in Christ and overcoming the emptiness and discontentment that seems to plague our modern world. You know, I was scrolling through social media the other day and I couldn't help but notice how everyone seemed to be chasing after the next big thing, the latest gadget, the trendiest vacation spot, the most Instagram-worthy meal. It's like we're all on this never-ending quest for more, more, more. But here's the thing no matter how much we acquire, that feeling of emptiness just doesn't seem to go away. Can anyone else relate to this? I think it's time we had an honest conversation about this. Why do we feel so empty, even when our lives are full of stuff? And, more importantly, how can we find true fullness and contentment in a world that's always pushing us to want more? Let's start by acknowledging something important this feeling of emptiness and dissatisfaction. It's not new. In fact, it's been around since, well, pretty much the beginning of time.

Speaker 1:

Remember the Israelites in the wilderness? God had just performed incredible miracles to free them from slavery in Egypt. And what did they do? They complained about the food. We read in Exodus, chapter 16, verses 2 to 3. There too, the whole community of Israel complained about Moses and Aaron. If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt, they moaned. There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted, but now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? We're not so different from those Israelites. We experience God's blessings, but we're quick to forget them when faced with new challenges or desires.

Speaker 1:

Now let's fast forward to our modern world. We're bombarded with messages telling us we need more to be happy More money, more success, more followers, more everything. It's like we're on this endless treadmill, running after satisfaction but never quite reaching it. But here's the truth, friends this endless treadmill running after satisfaction but never quite reaching it. But here's the truth, friends True fullness, real contentment. It doesn't come from the things of this world, it comes from Christ. Paul tells us in Colossians 2, verses 9-10,. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. Did you catch that? In Christ we are complete? Not, we will be complete when we get that promotion, or we'll be complete when we finally lose those last 10 pounds. No, in Christ, we are already complete. But let's be real for a moment.

Speaker 1:

If we know this truth, why do we still struggle with feelings of emptiness? Why do we still find ourselves chasing after things that don't ultimately satisfy? I think part of the problem is that we often misplace our identity. We try to find our worth in our job titles, our relationship status or our bank accounts, but none of these things were ever meant to bear the weight of our identity. Another issue is comparison. Oh boy, social media has made this one so much worse, hasn't it? We're constantly exposed to highlight reels of other people's lives, and it's so easy to fall into the trap of thinking if only I had what they have, then I'd be happy. And let's not forget about materialism and consumerism. Our culture tells us that happiness is just one purchase away. But how many times have we bought something, felt that brief high and then found ourselves right back where we started?

Speaker 1:

Sometimes our emptiness comes from unfulfilled expectations. Maybe you had big dreams for your life and things haven't turned out quite the way you planned. Or perhaps someone spoke a word of prophecy over you and you're still waiting to see it fulfilled. Speaking of prophecy, I know some of you might be wrestling with this. Maybe someone gave you a prophetic word and you're wondering why it hasn't come to pass.

Speaker 1:

First, let me say this it's okay to question and seek understanding, but we also need to remember that God's timing isn't always our timing. In Isaiah 55, verses 8-9, god says my thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, says the Lord, and my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. When it comes to prophecy, our role is to remain open and obedient to God's leading. Sometimes there might be steps of faith we need to take. Other times it's simply a matter of waiting and trusting. And, yes, occasionally we may need to humbly consider whether what we heard was truly from God or perhaps influenced by our own desires or someone else's well-meaning but misguided words. The key is to always bring these things back to God in prayer and to measure them against His Word. Remember any true word from God will align with Scripture and ultimately draw us closer to Him.

Speaker 1:

Now let's talk about God's provision for our fullness. Jesus himself said in John, chapter 6, verse 35, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Think about that for a moment. Jesus is saying that he is the answer to our deepest hunger and thirst. Not just physical hunger and thirst, but that soul, deep longing for purpose, for love, for meaning. And it doesn't stop there.

Speaker 1:

In John, chapter 10, verse 10, jesus says the thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. A rich and satisfying life. That's what Jesus offers us. But here's the thing this richness, this satisfaction, it might not look the way the world tells us it should. It's not about having the biggest house or the most impressive job title. It's about having peace that surpasses understanding, joy that persists even in difficult circumstances, and love that transforms us from the inside out.

Speaker 1:

So how do we tap into this fullness that Christ offers? How do we overcome the emptiness and discontentment that so often plagues us? Let me share some practical steps. One cultivate gratitude. This is huge, friends. When we focus on what we're thankful for, it shifts our perspective, from what we lack to what we have. Try starting each day by listing three things you're grateful for.

Speaker 1:

Two practice contentment. Paul writes in Philippians 4, verses 11 to 13,. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little, for I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Contentment is a learned skill. It takes practice. Start by challenging those if only thoughts when they come up, instead of thinking if only I had this, then I'd be happy up Instead of thinking if only I had this, then I'd be happy. Try reframing it to even without this, I can choose to be content because my joy comes from Christ.

Speaker 1:

Three deepen your relationship with God. This is absolutely crucial. Spend time in prayer, not just talking to God, but listening as well. Dive into scripture regularly. The more we know God, the more we understand His love for us and the less we feel the need to find our worth in other things. Four serve others. There's something powerful about taking our eyes off ourselves and focusing on the needs of others. It helps put our own struggles in perspective and often brings a deep sense of fulfillment.

Speaker 1:

5. Renew your mind. Romans, chapter 12, verse 2, tells us don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. This means actively challenging the messages we receive from the world and replacing them with God's truth. When you catch yourself buying into the you-need-more-to-be-happy lie, counter it with truth from Scripture. Now, I know some of you might be thinking Evan, this all sounds great, but I've tried some of these things and I still feel empty sometimes. But I've tried some of these things and I still feel empty sometimes.

Speaker 1:

First, let me say this it's okay. Feeling empty or discontent doesn't mean you're a bad Christian or that you're doing something wrong. We're on a journey and transformation takes time. Remember, finding fullness in Christ is a process. It's not about achieving some perfect state where we never struggle again. It's about learning to turn to Christ in those moments of emptiness, trusting that he is enough, even when our feelings tell us otherwise. And here's something else that's really important. We weren't meant to do this alone. We need community. Find people who can encourage you, pray with you and remind you of God's truth when you're struggling to see it yourself.

Speaker 1:

Now let's address some specific areas where we often struggle with discontentment career and purpose. Maybe you're in a job you don't love or you're still trying to figure out what you're meant to do with your life. Remember your worth isn't determined by your job title or your achievements. Your primary purpose is to know God and make him known. Everything else flows from that Relationships, whether you're single and longing for a partner or in a relationship that's not meeting your expectations. Remember that no human relationship can fully satisfy the deepest longings of your heart. That's a job only God can do.

Speaker 1:

Financial situation, money problems can be a huge source of stress and discontentment. But remember what Jesus said in Matthew, chapter 6, verses 31 to 33. So don't worry about these things saying what will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers. But your heavenly father already knows all your needs. Seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need Physical appearance or health. In a world obsessed with image, it's easy to feel discontent with our bodies, but remember you are fearfully and wonderfully made. God looks at the heart, not the outward appearance made. God looks at the heart, not the outward appearance.

Speaker 1:

Now I want to address a question that I know some of you are probably thinking how do I balance ambition and contentment? Is it wrong to want to improve my life? This is such a great question and it's one I've wrestled with myself. Here's what I've come to understand. Contentment doesn't mean complacency. It's not about never setting goals or wanting to grow. The key is in where we find our satisfaction. When our contentment is rooted in Christ, we can pursue goals and dreams without tying our worth or happiness to the outcome. We can work hard and strive for excellence, not because we need these things to feel complete, but because we're stewarding the gifts and opportunities God has given us. Think about it this way A tree with deep roots can weather storms and continue to grow tall. In the same way, when we're deeply rooted in Christ, we can reach for new heights without fear of being uprooted by setbacks or disappointments.

Speaker 1:

Speaking of setbacks, let's talk about how to deal with them, because, let's face it, life isn't always smooth sailing, even when we're seeking God. So what do we do when we face disappointments or when things don't go the way we hoped? First, allow yourself to feel. It's okay to be sad or frustrated when things don't work out. God can handle your real emotions. Pour out your heart to him, like the psalmist did. Then remind yourself of God's faithfulness.

Speaker 1:

Look back on times in your life when God has come through for you. Remember his promises in Scripture. In Jeremiah 29, verse 11, god says For I know the plans I have for you. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Even when things don't make sense to us, we can trust that God is working all things together for our good and finally, keep an eternal perspective.

Speaker 1:

In 2 Corinthians 4, verses 17 to 18, paul writes For our present troubles are small and won't last very long, yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever. So we don't look at the troubles we can see now. Rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen, for the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. This life with all its ups and downs, is temporary, but our relationship with God, the fullness we find in Christ, that's eternal. As we wrap up, I want to leave you with this thought Finding fullness in Christ isn't about achieving some perfect state where we never struggle or feel discontent.

Speaker 1:

It's about learning to turn to Christ in those moments, trusting that he is enough, even when our feelings or circumstances tell us otherwise. It's about letting His love fill the empty spaces in our hearts, letting His truth counter the lies of the world and letting His Spirit empower us to live with purpose and joy, regardless of our external circumstances. So, my fellow God-chasers, I challenge you this week. Every time you feel that pull of discontentment, every time you're tempted to think if only I had this, then I'd be happy. Pause, take a deep breath and remind yourself of this truth from Psalm 16, verse 11. You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Speaker 1:

In Christ, we have everything we need for fullness and joy. Let's live in that truth Until next time. Keep chasing after God. He's always worth the pursuit. This is Evan Evans signing off. God bless and remember in Christ you are complete. Keep chasing after God. He's always worth the pursuit. This is Evan Evans signing off. God bless and remember. In Christ you are complete.
