Speaker 1:Welcome to the God Chaser Podcast. I'm your host, evan Evans, and today we're starting an incredible journey together. We're going to dive deep into one of the most fascinating themes in Scripture how Jesus Christ, our Savior, appears throughout the entire Bible, starting right from the very first chapter of Genesis. You know many people think of Jesus as just appearing in the New Testament, born in a manger in Bethlehem. But what if I told you that Jesus was actually there at the very beginning, that he was active in creation itself, and that the first man, adam, was actually created as a preview of Jesus Christ, who would come thousands of years later? Sounds amazing, right, let's start at the very beginning. Genesis 1-1 tells us In the beginning, god created the heavens and the earth. Now, hold on to that thought, because when we jump to the Gospel of John, we get an extraordinary revelation. John 1-1-3 tells us In the beginning, the Word already existed. John 1-3 tells us Now who is this word John is talking about? Well, john 1-14 makes it crystal clear. So the Word became human and made his home among us. This is Jesus. The same Jesus who would later walk on earth was actually present and active in creation itself. Think about that for a moment Every time we read in Genesis, chapter 1,.
Speaker 1:And God said that was Jesus, the Word of God speaking creation into existence. That was Jesus, the Word of God, speaking creation into existence. When God said in Genesis 1, verse 3, let there be light, that was Jesus, the light of the world creating light itself. But it gets even more fascinating. Let's look at Genesis 1, verses 26 to 27. Then God said Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. So God created human beings in his own image, in the image of God. He created them, male and female. He created them Notice the plural pronouns us and our. This is one of our first glimpses of the Trinity in action, with Jesus present in the divine council of creation. Now here's where it gets really interesting. When God created Adam, he wasn't just creating the first human being. He was creating a prophetic picture of Jesus Christ, who would come later.
Speaker 1:The Apostle Paul explains this in 1 Corinthians 15, verses 45-49. The scriptures tell us the first man, adam, became a living person, but the last Adam, that is, christ, is a life-giving spirit. Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven. Let's break this down and look at the parallels between Adam and Jesus. First, both Adam and Jesus entered the world through a unique creative act of God. Adam was formed from the dust of the ground, as we read in Genesis, chapter 2, verse 7. Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man's nostrils and the man became a living person. Jesus similarly entered the world through the miraculous virgin birth, as prophesied in Isaiah 7, verse 14, and fulfilled in Luke 1, verses 34-35. Second, both were given dominion over creation. For Adam, this commission is found in Genesis, chapter 1, verse 28. Then God blessed them and said be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and govern it. For Jesus, we see his ultimate authority declared in Matthew 28, verse 18. I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.
Speaker 1:But here's where the parallel becomes a contrast. In Romans 5, verses 12-21, paul explains that Adam's disobedience brought sin and death into the world, but Jesus' perfect obedience brings righteousness and life. Adam's failure in the Garden of Eden, when faced with temptation, contrasts sharply with Jesus' victory over temptation in the wilderness, as recorded in Matthew 4, verses 1-11. This is crucial for us to understand. Adam was created as a type, a foreshadowing of Christ. But while Adam failed in his mission to represent God faithfully on earth, jesus succeeded perfectly. That's why Paul calls Jesus the last Adam. He's the perfect version of what humanity was always meant to be.
Speaker 1:Let's dig deeper into the Garden of Eden story because it's packed with symbolism that points to Jesus. In Genesis, chapter 2, verses 15 to 17,. God places Adam in the garden and gives him one command don't eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. We all know what happens next. In Genesis, chapter 3, verses 1 to 7,. Adam and Eve fall into temptation and sin enters the world.
Speaker 1:But right there, in humanity's darkest moment, we see the first prophecy about Jesus. In Genesis, chapter 3, verse 15,. God tells the serpent I will cause hostility between you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head and you will strike his heel. This is what theologians call the proto-evangelium, the first announcement of the gospel. It's a promise that one of Eve's descendants, jesus, would ultimately defeat Satan, though at a cost the cross. Beat Satan, though at a cost the cross.
Speaker 1:The parallels continue even in the aftermath of the fall. In Genesis 3, verse 21,. We read that God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and Eve. This required the first death in creation. An animal had to die to cover human shame. This points forward to Jesus, the Lamb of God, whose death would provide the ultimate covering for human sin. Now, why is all this relevant to us today? Because understanding Jesus' role in creation and his position as the last Adam completely transforms how we see ourselves and our place in God's story.
Speaker 1:When we accept Christ, 2 Corinthians, 5, verse 17, tells us we become a new creation, just as God breathed life into Adam. When we come to Christ we receive new spiritual life. As it says in John 3, verse 3, we are born again. But it goes even deeper. In Romans, chapter 8, verses 29 to 30, we learn that God's purpose is to conform us to the image of his son. Remember how Adam was created in God's image. That image was marred by sin, but in Christ we're being restored to what humanity was always meant to be. This has profound implications for how we live.
Speaker 1:Colossians, chapter 3, verses 9 to 10. Tells us to put off the old self and put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Every day, we have the choice to live either as children of the first Adam, following our sinful nature, or as children of the last Adam, jesus Christ, following the Spirit. The creation story also reminds us of our purpose. Just as Adam was given work to do in the garden, we too are created for good works, as Ephesians, chapter 2, verse 10, tells us. We're meant to be God's representatives on earth, caring for his creation and spreading his kingdom.
Speaker 1:Understanding Jesus' role in creation should fill us with awe and wonder. Every sunset we see, every star that twinkles in the night sky, every mountain and ocean, all of it was created through Jesus Christ, as Colossians, chapter 1, verses 16 to 17, declares. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else and he holds all creation together. This understanding should also give us hope. The same power that spoke the universe into existence, the same creative force that formed Adam from the dust, is at work in us through Jesus Christ. As Philippians 1.6 promises, god, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished. As we wrap up, I want to encourage you to look at creation with new eyes. When you see the beauty of nature. Remember that you're looking at the handiwork of Jesus Christ when you face temptation. Remember that while the first Adam failed, the last Adam succeeded and his victory can be your victory, and his victory can be your victory.
Speaker 1:Next time we'll continue our journey through Scripture, exploring more amazing ways that Jesus appears throughout the Old Testament. We'll look at the incredible story of Abraham and Isaac and how it prefigures what God would do through Jesus Christ, thousands of years later. Until then, keep chasing after God and remember Jesus wasn't just there at the beginning. He is the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega, as Revelation, chapter 22, verse 13, tells us, and he's inviting each of us to be part of his new creation.
