Speaker 1:Last week we saw how the period of judges showed our desperate need for a perfect deliverer. Today we're stepping into what I believe is one of Scripture's most beautiful love stories. But it's far more than just a romance. The book of Ruth shows us a stunning picture of how Jesus Christ redeems, restores and transforms lives. Ruth, chapter 1, verse 1, sets the scene In the days when the judges ruled. There was a famine in the land Right away, we're told. This story takes place during that dark period we just studied. But while Judges shows us the big picture of Israel's cycles, ruth zooms in to show us how God works in individual lives during the darkest times.
Speaker 1:Some of you are living in your own personal famine right now. Maybe it's a spiritual drought where God seems distant. An emotional desert where hope seems lost. A relational wasteland where love feels dead. A financial wilderness where provision seems impossible. Watch what happens. Elimelech takes his wife, naomi and their two sons to Moab seeking bread, but sometimes leaving God's place seeking worldly provision leads to deeper loss. Naomi loses her husband and both sons, leaving her with two Moabite daughters-in-law and a heart full of bitterness. Have you ever tried to solve God's way with the world's wisdom? Maybe you've compromised your values for financial security, settled for less than God's best in relationships, left your place of spiritual nurture, seeking easier paths. But here's where we see the first glimpse of Jesus in this story. When everything seems lost, when all hope is gone, redemption begins with a return.
Speaker 1:Ruth, chapter 1, verses 16 to 17, gives us one of scripture's most powerful declarations of loyalty. Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. This isn't just about a daughter-in-law's devotion. This is a picture of saving faith. Notice what Ruth does. She leaves her old life, repentance. She embraces a new people fellowship. She claims a new God faith. She commits, regardless of cost, surrender. Doesn't this mirror what Jesus calls us to? In Luke, chapter 14, verse 33, he says in the same way those of you who do not give up everything, you cannot be my disciples. Some of you are standing at your own Moab border right now. God's calling you to leave behind old habits that hold you captive, relationships that pull you down, beliefs that keep you bound, a lifestyle that limits your spiritual growth. But you're afraid. You're calculating the cost, like Orpah, ruth's sister-in-law, a lifestyle that limits your spiritual growth. But you're afraid You're calculating the cost, like Orpah, ruth's sister-in-law who turned back. The familiar pain seems safer than unfamiliar faith. But watch what happens to Ruth. Her decision to follow the God of Israel leads her straight into a divine love story.
Speaker 1:Ruth chapter 2 introduces us to Boaz, and here's where the picture of Christ becomes breathtaking. Verse 1 calls him a man of standing, but more importantly, he's a kinsman, redeemer, someone with the right and responsibility to restore lost inheritance and redeem from bondage. This points directly to what Jesus would do for us. Hebrews chapter 2, verse 11 tells us Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. Watch how Boaz treats Ruth In Ruth chapter 2, verses 8 to 9,.
Speaker 1:He tells her stay here with my women workers. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you and whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled. This is what Jesus does for us Provides protection, stay here, ensures provision, go and get a drink. Gives purpose, work in his field, offers community with his people. Ruth's response in verse 10 echoes what many of us feel when we first encounter Christ's grace. Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me a foreigner? Some of you are asking that same question right now. Why would God want me? Look at my past, look at my failures, look at where I'm from. But that's the beauty of grace. Ephesians, chapter 2, verses 12 to 13, tells us remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel.
Speaker 1:Look at what happens next, ruth, chapter 2, verse 14. At mealtime Boaz said to her Come over here, have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar. Doesn't this remind you of another meal? Jesus says in Revelation, chapter 3, verse 20, here I am, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person and they with me. But it gets even better. Boaz tells his workers, in verses 15 to 16, to deliberately drop grain for her. Some of you need to understand this. God's provision in your life isn't accidental. What looks like coincidence is actually providence. Those chance opportunities, those random blessings. They're being deliberately dropped in your path by your Redeemer.
Speaker 1:Ruth, chapter 3, brings us to the threshing floor scene. Naomi instructs Ruth to wash perfume herself, put on her best clothes and go to where Boaz is sleeping. Now this might sound strange to our modern ears, but this was Ruth's way of asking Boaz to fulfill his role as kinsman redeemer. Let's break this down spiritually Washing represents cleansing from our old life best clothes picture putting on righteousness. Going to him shows our need to take initiative in faith. Lying at his feet demonstrates complete submission. Some of you are trying to clean yourself up before coming to Jesus. But notice the order here. Ruth doesn't make herself worthy of redemption. She simply presents herself to the Redeemer. That's what Jesus invites us to do.
Speaker 1:Revelation, chapter 22, verse 17, says Watch Boaz's response in Ruth 3, verses 10-11. The Lord bless you. My daughter, don't be afraid, I will do for you all you ask. Doesn't this echo Jesus' words in John, chapter 6, verse 37? Whoever comes to me, I will never drive away. But there's a complication. Ruth, chapter 3, verse 12, reveals there's a closer kinsman, redeemer. By law, he has first right to redeem. This points to a profound truth. The law had first claim on us. But just as that closer kinsman couldn't or wouldn't redeem Ruth. Romans, chapter 8, verse 3, tells us what the law couldn't do. God did by sending Jesus Ruth.
Speaker 1:Chapter 4 opens at the city gate where all legal transactions took place. Watch how Boaz handles this. He doesn't do it secretly. He gathers ten elders as witnesses. This mirrors how Jesus accomplished our redemption, not in private but publicly on the cross. The closer kinsman initially says I will redeem it.
Speaker 1:In verse 4. Some of you are still trying to be redeemed by the law by being good enough, religious enough, moral enough. But when this kinsman learns he must also take Ruth, he backs out, saying in verse 6, I might endanger my own estate. The law can't love you, it can't show mercy, it can only demand performance. But Boaz, like Jesus, is willing to pay the full price. In verse 9, he declares Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, kilion and Malon. I have also acquired Ruth, the Moabite. Look at the parallels to Christ Public declaration of intent, payment of full price, acquisition of both inheritance and bride. Witnesses to the transaction. 1 Corinthians 6, verse 20 tells us you were bought at a price. Just as Boaz paid the full price for Ruth's redemption, jesus paid the full price for Ruth's redemption. Jesus paid the full price for ours.
Speaker 1:But here's where it gets even more beautiful. Ruth, chapter 4, verses 13 to 17, shows us the outcomes of redemption Marriage, union with Christ, fruitfulness, spiritual productivity, restoration of joy. Naomi's bitterness turned to blessing A place in God's bigger story. Ruth becomes David's great-grandmother. Let's look at the bigger picture this story paints of redemption. The book ends with a genealogy in Ruth, chapter 4, verses 18 to 22, tracing the line from Perez to David. This isn't just an add-on. It's showing us that Ruth's personal story of redemption fits into God's larger story of salvation. Matthew, chapter 1, picks up this genealogy and carries it to Jesus. Think about this A Moabite woman from a people cursed by the law becomes part of the Messiah's lineage. This shows us that Jesus' redemption crosses every boundary, breaks every curse, transforms every story.
Speaker 1:Some of you feel like Ruth must have felt, entering Bethlehem, an outsider, seeking belonging, carrying shame from your past, wondering if redemption is possible, questioning if you can really start over. But look at what God did with Ruth's story From gleaning leftover grain, she becomes the great-grandmother of King David and part of the lineage of Jesus Christ. This is what redemption does. It doesn't just rescue us. It gives us a new identity, a new purpose, a new future. Remember how the story started With Naomi saying in Ruth, chapter 1, verse 20, don't call me Naomi, call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. But by the end, the women are telling her in Ruth, chapter 4, verse 15, he will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. This is what Jesus does. He turns our bitterness into blessing, transforms our emptiness into fullness, changes our mourning into dancing, converts our endings into beginnings.
Speaker 1:The book of Ruth shows us four movements of redemption Return Like Ruth leaving Moab, we must turn from our old life. Request Like Ruth at the threshing floor, we must ask for redemption. Rest, like Ruth, waiting after Boaz's promise, we must trust our Redeemer. Restoration Like Ruth's marriage and motherhood we receive new life.
Speaker 1:Some of you are at different points in this journey. Maybe you're still in Moab, needing to make that first turn. Perhaps you're gleaning in the fields, experiencing God's initial provision. You might be at the threshing floor, ready to request full redemption, or you're waiting. Be at the threshing floor ready to request full redemption, or you're waiting, trusting God's promises to come through.
Speaker 1:Wherever you are, remember this Jesus is our Boaz, our kinsman, redeemer, who sees us when we feel invisible, provides when we're in need, protects when we're vulnerable, redeems when we're helpless, restores what we've lost, gives us a place in his story. Next week, we'll look at Samuel's story and see how Jesus appears as our perfect prophet. But today, remember, just as Boaz was Ruth's kinsman, redeemer, jesus is yours. He's paid the full price, he's handled the legal requirements. He's ready to transform your story. This is Evan Evans, reminding you to keep chasing God's heart Until next time. Remember, no matter where you're from, what you've done or how far you've fallen, you're Redeemer, lives and he's able to restore everything you've lost. This has been the God Chaser podcast.
