Cydni and Sher
Life will give us reasons to feel discouraged, disheartened and broken. We choose to take from these moments reasons to find courage, hope and wholeness. When life tries to crack us, we choose to crack up. When we are too weary, we seek strength. When life feels too dark, we remind ourselves from words in the Hebrews “we are not of them who draw back.” Rather we choose to move forward Together.
Cydni and Sher discuss stories from the scriptures, history and their own experiences finding a common truth that there is purpose, meaning and learning to be done all directed by an all powerful, wise and loving God. Come laugh with us or at us, either way we are so glad you are here.

Episode 99 - Sacrifice Part 2
[00:00:00]
Sher: Today's.
Cydni: Wait, sure. Yes. You know, it'd be crazy. What if we were recording and it was going really well and I was talking and then you unplugged the episode because you hated it and I was talking.
What if that happens? Oh, the chances of that happening, Cydni are so slim that would never happen. We need to trade spots. Why are you closer to the plug? I want that control.
Sher: I apologize. I just kicked the cord and it came unplugged and we lost everything. While I was speaking though. Yes. Weird. I'm trying to get you to clue in, but you just don't seem to be
Cydni: getting the hint. Every time I come over and the door's locked and you won't answer and I have to crawl through the back window.
Sher: What do I have to do to get her to go away?
Cydni: That restraining order is doing nothing.
Sher: Cydni, we're going to continue talking about sacrifice, but we wanted to focus this week on what we as individuals are asked to [00:01:00] sacrifice
Cydni: which is my favorite thing to do. I love to talk about all the things that I am sacrificing for the greater good. And I really will appreciate. This episode, when my family sits down together and they all listen about how much sleep I sacrifice and my gifts and my talents are used to fold laundry and make beds and mop. I can't wait to do this.
Sher: And then you wonder why I unplugged it,
Cydni: They're going to unplug the episode probably too, phone out the window or something, whatever we're listening to it on, that's going to go out the window .
Sher: So last week we talked about what sacrifice means today. And we can find this in 3rd Nephi chapter 9 verse 20, it says, And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. In other words, what this means is that we are ready do anything and everything for our Heavenly Father whenever he asks.
Cydni: This is how Bruce R. McConkie says it. He says, The law of sacrifice is that we are willing to sacrifice [00:02:00] all that we have for truth's sake, our character and reputation. our honor and applause, our good name among men, our houses, lands, and families, all things, even our very lives if needed.
But that's all. Nothing more. And then he goes on to say that not many of us are called to do these things, but it's important that in our hearts that if we are called to do them. That we do them.
That's part of the deal. That's part of the deal. It's easy to think like I would do that. I would lay down my life for a stranger, but then sometimes you're like I don't even want someone to go in front of me in traffic. So maybe I wouldn't.
Sher: We see that every day on the road. Like how dare you try to go ahead of me. We live in this religious community and we get cut off everywhere we go and flipped off.
Cydni: And there's like daily road rage articles, another family loses their father because someone cut them off on the freeway.
Sher: Yeah. It makes a lot of sense. Maybe we should scale it down. [00:03:00] Let's start with just sacrificing, letting people go in front of you on the road.
Cydni: Yeah. Today we are not going to talk about sacrifice anymore. We're going to talk about how to be nice in carpool or look the other way for a minute. Breathe, meditate during carpool.
But he does share Joseph Smith's quote that I've always loved. It says, a religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary to lead and to life and salvation. I've always liked this quote from Joseph Smith because it makes sense.
Sher: When you read that quote, I'm not gonna lie, it feels a bit overwhelming especially when you were reading that list. I feel like how can anyone ever really do that? But that's what we're asked to do. oh my heck, is all I have to say about that.
Cydni: Oh my Ty heck, . . I'm getting real upset over here. Darn it. See, we sacrifice swear words too. . We get a totally thrown down that F bomb, but here we are [00:04:00] sacrificing vulgar language, we talked about Cain and Abel last week as well, and I was reading a little more again in preparation for this, even though we're not going to talk about Cain and Abel again, other than me talking about them right this second. But, I did find this interesting that Adam and Eve are told to sacrifice as soon as they leave the garden of Eden.
And an angel appears and says, why does thou offer sacrifices unto the Lord? And just pause at that sentence. I thought this God does want us to know why we are sacrificing. And I think this point is very important that he wants us to know why we're sacrificing, but he also wants us to understand the rewards of sacrificing. And the angel gives the answer because Adam doesn't know why he's doing it, but he's being obedient and the angel said, the thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the only begotten of the father, which is full of grace and truth. And before we move on, we understand that. They [00:05:00] did sacrifice animals and there was different ways to sacrifice until the great sacrifice happened when Christ was sacrificed We are no longer asked to sacrifice Animals, in fact, we were told not to but that's when we were told it was time to sacrifice our hearts and our minds Which again, I would rather sacrifice an animal.
Sher: As we learned last week. So we thought this week that we really wanted to dive in and look at the ways that we are truly asked to sacrifice today. And so we have list of things that we're going to go over to discuss today. again, we're expected to give everything and anything to God when he asks. And here are some things that list includes.
The first one is our time and our priorities. God wants us to go to church. He wants us to study scriptures. He wants us to serve others. He wants us to give of our time, our personal time, and give up things that we want to do to help and to serve others and to better ourselves, but [00:06:00] he wants us to give of our time, even when we don't really feel like it. We'd rather stay home and be watching TV. He expects us to go out and serve on some of those occasions.
Cydni: And we have lots of opportunities at church to serve and sacrifice our time. And if I could just add that I recently got. released from my calling that I had that did take up time. And so I don't have a calling right now. So I don't have any responsibilities and it is terrifying. I feel like I'm. In water just floating around and I'm like, am I going to get a life vest or is a shark going to get me because I'm going to be asked to sacrifice some time here soon. We are told to sacrifice our time, but it's terrifying sometimes.
Sher: When you don't know what's coming. I hope you get the shark. That's what I'm hoping. Alright, , another thing that we are required to sacrifice is comfort and conveniences. In Luke chapter 9 verse 23, it says, if any man will come after me. Let him deny himself and [00:07:00] take up his cross daily and follow me. So what does it mean to take up your cross daily? Elder Uchtdorf explained that taking up the cross means to surrender our desires and to be willing to sacrifice what we love most to serve God and others. This action may bring difficulties, but it leads to joy because it aligns us with Christ's divine plan. Now there's a word in there that just kind of terrifies me a little bit, and it's this, difficulties. That's What might happen when you align your will with Christ? You might have to go through some difficult things.
Cydni: You know Sher, just in our personal conversation mentioned something along these lines that I thought was really beautiful. You should share that. You know I'm talking about?
Sher: Yeah, so Cydni and I were just talking yesterday, I believe, about how sometimes God asks us to do things and we don't really understand why. And in our study this year, I've been reading in the Doctrine and Covenants and something that has just kept coming up as I was studying is [00:08:00] what happened to the Safety Society. So this is basically, this is my words, a bank that was set up to help all of the early saints in Kirkland get going. People that had a lot of wealth put their money in and it was just to help everyone with loans and currency and just to get the community thriving, which wasn't unusual back then. I kind of In my brain equate it with a credit union. And Many of the leaders were promised, in their minds anyway, that this would not fail, and then it did fail, mainly because there was a huge depression that happened at the time, and they can't help what's going on in the country, because of that, this safety society did fall.
And that is where a lot of the problems came with the early saints. A lot of the leadership was very upset that they lost everything they had in the collapse of this like credit union. They were very upset about it. And as I was thinking about this and pondering it, I thought, how many times? Does the prophet ask us to do something and [00:09:00] we do it and then we don't get the result we want something bad happens as a result of it. And then after the fact you're like, but I did what was asked of me. And the thought came to me. That maybe that is what we're supposed to be doing. We are supposed to be learning something from that. We're supposed to show obedience and faith even through failure when things don't work out. That's part of the plan. That's part of the growth even if these things don't work out after I'm following what I know that I'm supposed to be doing, what the prophet has asked of me to do. That's part of trying our faith and showing that we'll still be faithful.
It's part of the modern day sacrifice that we're asked to do. So, I think in my world that I want to live in, when I follow the prophet, that means everything should work out perfectly, but that's not the case. What that means is that when I'm asked to follow the prophet, I'm supposed to learn the lessons from that. And that's where I need to [00:10:00] have a little bit more humility, at least in my life.
Cydni: was thinking when you talked about this, that it shows that our faithful obedience often leads us to a trial, but it's because God has the confidence to now provide that trial to help us become who we are supposed to be, which Sounds a little crappy. Crappy. Yep, crappy.
Sher: But that is part of it. That's part of the fun plan here on Earth. And that's what is meant by taking up our cross.
Cydni: And it's not comfortable or convenient, is it?
Sher: Definitely not. Another thing on our list as we were thinking about what we are required to sacrifice. is wealth and material possessions. Examples of this is paying our tithes and offerings. In Malachi chapter 3, verse 10, it says, Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house. And prove me now herewith, the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be [00:11:00] room enough to receive it.
the Lord is giving us a challenge there. He's saying, , yes, I am requiring you to pay tithes and offerings, but on the flip side of it, I want you to sit back and watch the blessings that I'm just going to pour out all over you, which I'm very grateful for that. He gives that challenge. He's like, try it out, see if it works. But sometimes it does hurt handing over that money. Especially, you know, when things are a little tight.
Cydni: I came across an old Elder Ballard speech he was a bishop in the late 1950s. I didn't understand that a lot of the buildings were built not just by tithes But it was truly built by the members that went to that church building. Did you know that?
Sher: I did know that. even when I wasn't alive, I wasn't either, but even when I was a kid, they did want the members of the ward to help out a little bit more than we do now.
Cydni: Yeah, I had no idea. And so that was interesting to learn that a lot of the buildings that are in our valley, they were not just built by [00:12:00] everyone contributing to 10%, but it was truly built by people who lived there and wanted it in their community.
And he talks about one of the buildings being built for this purpose, and he said that he was the bishop,, and the ward was asked to pay for 50 percent of what it cost. to build that building, which is a lot of money. And he said the ward was full of very young families who are already struggling to get by. And he was told that he was to ask the ward for 30, 000 more dollars after everyone had already contributed.
Sher: Oh my goodness.
Cydni: That is a heavy burden.
Sher: Holy cow. In
Cydni: 1958. What
Sher: kind of church was this? My goodness.
Cydni: Very futuristic. It's very modern. Elder Ballard said he went and prayed about it and he felt just sick about asking anybody to sacrifice more of their money. Knowing again that they're just like young families trying to get by. And then he was impressed to share something his grandfather wrote down in his journal, who at the time, the [00:13:00] grandfather was having his own issue about things going on in the valley, but obviously years before.
This is by Melvin J. Ballard, and he starts off his entry saying that he was struggling with a problem and the only thing he knew to do was to go to the Lord in humble prayer, and he did this. He said, on this occasion, I had sought the Lord under such circumstances and that night I received a wonderful manifestation and impression, which has never left me. I was carried to a place. I saw myself there and I was told that there was another privilege that was to be mine and I was led into another room where I was informed I was to meet someone. As I entered the room, I saw seated on a raised platform, the most glorious being I have ever conceived of and was taken forward to be introduced to him. As I approached, he smiled, called my name. And stretched out his hand toward me. If I live to be a million years [00:14:00] old, I shall never forget that smile. He put his arms around me and kissed me. He took me into his bosom and he blessed me until my whole being was thrilled. As he finished, I fell at his feet and there saw the marks of the nails and I kissed them with deep joy swelling through my whole being. I felt that I was in heaven indeed. The feeling that came to my heart then was, Oh, if I could live worthy, though it would require four score years so that in the end. When I have finished, I could go into His presence and receive the feeling that I then had in his presence. I would give everything that I am or ever hope to be. Elder Ballard shared this. And by eight o'clock Sunday evening, the ward clerk had written receipts for a little more than 30, 000.
Sher: Oh, that is amazing. I love that story.
Cydni: That story, of course, is beautiful, so I also love it, but I love even more what he shared next, is that through this sacrifice, the blessings of heaven came, [00:15:00] that he had never lived among people who were more united, more caring, more concerned for one another than the ward members, while this Sacrifice was made, he said, in the midst of their effort, that the sick of their ward were healed through priesthood blessings, that the youth committed to live righteously, the young men and young women committed to live worthy, and they were blessed for it deeply and greatly, and he went on to say, Sacrifice is a demonstration of pure love, the degree of our love for the Lord, for the gospel, and for our fellow men can be measured by what we are willing to sacrifice for them.
Sher: That is so good. And as you were talking, all I could think of is that someday our Savior is going to return. And it's when we show that we are sacrificing and willing to give up everything Elder ward did. it lifted everybody in his ward because they gave so much that they wanted to live in a manner that was worthy of that sacrifice that they had given. I just want to add to that in 1st Timothy chapter 6 verse 7, when it [00:16:00] comes to our material wealth, It says for we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
And when you look at it like that, all of the material wealth and things that we have gained, it's meaningless because we can't take any of it with us. And I think about how I often get too focused on material gain or material wealth and how really what's important is what am I doing to help build up the kingdom of God with what I have.
some other things that we are required to sacrifice are worldly desires and sinful behaviors. I don't know. And to try to do our very best to live a Christ like life. In Romans chapter 12 in the heading it says that Paul counsels the saints. To present their bodies as a living sacrifice, to use their own grace given gifts, and to live as saints should live. And then in my scriptures, I have written next to it that Paul invites the saints to offer their bodies and their souls to [00:17:00] God. In other words, to give their all to God. So as we were mentioning earlier, we're giving up animal sacrifices and we're replacing it with us giving everything we have, giving all that we have to God. this is giving up our worldly desires and sinful behavior.
Cydni: That's very good. I'm going to pretend I didn't hear it so I could live in ignorance. As saints. We're like St. Lee ish. St. Lee ish sometimes
Sher: okay, moving on we need to be forgiving and give up our ego. So letting go of grudges, even when it's super hard.
Cydni: I hope my daughter listens to this part. She's ferocious at nine. I honestly put her to bed the other night and she was so grumpy and I thought, okay, all she needs is a sleep. She'll wake up. will be golden. That girl came out with a look on her face in the morning. I was like, how do you even remember? How do you remember to say that mad? How do you hold a [00:18:00] grudge like that? I'm not capable. I used to write myself post its to remember why I was mad at my husband because I knew I'd forget. It took a lot of effort to hold a grudge. But she does it naturally.
Sher: She doesn't have our problem where we can't remember anything. Nope, she doesn't. , I don't remember yesterday.
Cydni: I know. I forgive you, of course. Yeah. For what? I don't know. Because I don't remember.
Sher: I was probably at fault. Do you know what a good time it is to do a podcast with two people that can't remember anything?
Cydni: It's actually great for content because we're like, Oh, I have a great story. And neither of us remembered. We've shared it four times.
Sher: Exactly. It works out well. All right, moving on. The next thing we're asked to do is give complete obedience to God's will. And sometimes this means giving up A dream that you might have a relationship, a job, whatever it might be to follow God's plan and trusting that His path is better than our own ambitions.
And this one is really hard because sometimes God might ask you to give up something that is good, but it's [00:19:00] because he has something better. Or again, maybe you're going to be walking through that customized challenge and trial that might be headed your way, but he knows what individualized education plan is and what will work best for us. And he's going to get that baby tailor made just for us. And the more we are obedient to him and follow his will, the more we're going to get out of that individualized lesson plan.
The next one I don't know why we put it on the list, Cydni. I may be regretting even bringing this one up.
Cydni: Mostly I think it's nice you keep saying our list. You did all the work.
Sher: Thanks for adding me. You're welcome. That's very nice. Part of this fun sacrifice plan is we may get persecuted and be rejected by the world. Jesus warned his followers. That we would be hated for his name's sake in John chapter 15 verses 18 through 20. It says the world hate you You know that it hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love his own. But because you are not of the world, [00:20:00] but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. So, this is not a happy thing.
Cydni: I mean, if everyone hates you, you could say, Oh, I'm on the right path. That's nice.
Sher: Or you're just mean.
Cydni: Yeah, where you're like hateable. One or the other. God either loves you or everyone hates you. Like everyone.
Sher: Everyone hates you. But when we stand for Christian values, it can bring ridicule. One of the things that as a teacher that I, I know probably isn't. Very Christ like, but . I always judged how I was doing as a teacher by which students hated my guts. if the really naughty, mean kids hated my guts, then I would high five myself at the end of the day. Not sacrificing that ego, are ya? and if the really good kids and nice kids, they really liked me, then I was like, okay, I'm going to hold on to that. I must be doing something right. . But Christ is asking us to do a little bit more. He's asking us stand out from the world to be a light to the world.
And that is [00:21:00] going to bring on ridicule. People are going to make fun of us for the way that we live and the way that we choose to live. I know this sounds weird, but we kind of need to learn to embrace it. When people say mean things to you that are not living a Christ like life, that is a compliment because that means that we are doing what Christ wants us to do. Now, it's easier to say that than it is to be the one being ridiculed and mocked and spit on. That is what God wants us to do. He wants us to stand up for Him
Cydni: so what we have to do is judge other people and decide if they're Christ like or not, and then if they hate us, it's okay. So judge people. And then if they hate you.
Sher: That isn't quite what I meant, but thank you for pointing out what that sounded like. I did not mean that. It's terrible. Well, what I was thinking is I was thinking of my ancestors, the early saints from Nauvoo and what they went through and the sacrifices they went through to stand up [00:22:00] for what they believed in and there were a lot of people around them that did not like them, they wanted to kill them, and kick them out of their homes. this is what I was thinking of as I was talking. I wasn't trying to be judgmental. But I think you will know if they don't like you when they're trying to kick you out of their home and murder you. That's what I was thinking. I
Cydni: think that's not beating around the bush with how you feel. So yeah, I would agree. Do they like me? Did I say something wrong? Am I overthinking That would be me as a pioneer. I really would be like they're shooting at me. What did they not get that it was sarcasm?
Sher: All right. We also added to our list, self will and control. So we are choosing on our own without anyone Coercing us. We're choosing to surrender control of our lives and trusting in God's plan.
In Proverbs chapter 3 verse 5 through 6 it says, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy [00:23:00] path. Cydni, I just have to tell you, this is one of my all time favorite scriptures ever. I love that scripture, and I think the reason I love it so much is because it takes the pressure off of me, because I am dumb a lot of the times.
Don't say that. you're not dumb. There are a lot of things, but you're not dumb, Cher. but it tells me in that scripture that I don't have to trust in just my own understanding that I get to trust the Lord's understanding who gets all of it. So when I don't get something or I don't understand something, I don't have to right now.
I just need to know that the Lord knows and someday all of those little pieces are going to fit together for me. And it almost makes me feel or at least it should make me feel like I am more invincible. But because of my own weaknesses, I don't feel that way. But that's what it's trying to tell you is that everything's going to be okay if you trust in God. Eventually, it's going to work out.
The last one on our list is love and service to others. In Matthew [00:24:00] chapter 25 verse 40, it says, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me. And I think this sums up how beautiful the gospel of Christ is. We should be treating everyone with love and respect. And this scripture reminds me so much of my dad because my dad was so good at reaching out to what the world would say, quote, the least of these, he was so good at showing everyone that love and respect and set such a good example for our family of treating other people with their respect and the love that Christ would have us do.
Cydni: I listened to a preacher named Chris Volton. And he shared. Such a touching story about sacrifice. He said that his wife had allowed him to start a business and it did not go so well and they were really struggling financially through the winter.
And it was a business that required good weather, so it was especially difficult during the winter. And he said that he [00:25:00] was feeling discouraged, but they were barely scraping by. And one day he got everything done earlier than he wished because there was no more business, and he went home early. And when he walked in, he found his three young children in a tent. They had a little wood fire going and the electricity was out. he walked in and he thought, what's going on in here? And his wife came around the corner and she was startled that he was home early.
And she's like, oh, you're home. You're not supposed to be home for a few more hours. What are you doing? And she got real nervous. And he's like, why are the lights out? What is happening in here? And the kids said, we're playing. Camp. We're camping today. And the wife nervously walks around the house and turns the power back on. And in this moment he found out that his wife had been turning off the power. As soon as he left for work to save money she felt like it was her part to help what they needed to sacrifice to get by. So she turned the power off as soon as he left for work, and she turned it back on about an hour before he would get home. She presented it to the children that they were playing camping, [00:26:00] and he asked, How long have you been doing this? And she said, Months. So, during the winter, She turned off the power, turned off the heat, and the kids played camp. I love what he said about her. He said she had every right and every card in her hand to poison the energy of the house. To be like, how dare you go after this? How dare you put our family in this situation? But she didn't. She 100 percent stood by his side, made sacrifices, and he said that she was the ultimate partner during a very difficult time, which I found to be very inspiring and very beautiful.
And a Jordan Peterson idea that sacrifice is not about you and it's not about now. Sacrifice is giving up the things that we want of value, the things we desire, the comfort, the convenience, the desires of our worldly heart. It is about giving those up for a better future. And I love that idea.
Sher: And this brings us to how sacrifice brings about blessings. Elder Robert K. Dellenbach [00:27:00] said if we are caring, if we are charitable, if we are obedient to God and follow his prophets, our sacrifices will bring forth the blessings of heaven.
that's what we're working towards is being worthy to receive those blessings from heaven. Elder Ballard said we must not lose the spirit of sacrifice. Lord's choices blessings await those who practice this eternal principle themselves in service to God and to their fellow men. The sacrificing spirit and the happiness that comes through service to others can bring peace and joy, even amid trials. So when we sacrifice, we will receive the Lord's choices, blessings, and we can even have joy and happiness in this life.
this brings us to our final thoughts. Sacrifice doesn't always feel fun, but it's like trading in our earthly self or giving our all to God for a new and improved happy model that we're gonna have in the next life. Whether it's time, comfort, or personal desires, [00:28:00] giving up a little for God's plan opens the door to joy, peace, and a closer relationship with Him. as Elder Uchtdorf puts it, taking up our cross might be tough, but it's the best kind of tough. It leads us straight to happiness. So when we sacrifice for others, we're not just giving. We're gaining everything that truly matters and preparing us for the eternities.
Cydni: We challenge you this week to recognize a sacrifice someone has made for you and use your own judgment on how to express gratitude for that. This is our prayer. From Cydni and Cher. Do you want to plug that in?
Sher: Today's episode is sacrifice part two. Uno do . Today's episode is, today's episode is sacrifice part two
Cydni: or sacrifice the
Sher: remix.
Cydni: Today, We do sacrifice a lot, like, wine and hard drugs, [00:29:00] and other religions, they allow those. They allow hard drugs? I'm pretty sure there's a lot of religions out there. I don't know what religions you're talking about, but alright, okay. So, you know, like, the, of the earth religions, maybe, possibly. Be at one with your soul and the universe, those religions, we could be there.
Sher: is, are, are, is, are, is, or are. but one of the, okay, but we're, thank you I think that you should just be canceled just for saying that actually.
Cydni: I'm not cool enough to be canceled yet. Give it time. Give it time.
