Align and Trust in God

Cydni and Sher Season 3 Episode 102

Send us a text

In this episode, Cydni and Sher discuss finding peace and happiness by surrendering to God's will. They explore deep analogies (some more successful than others), share personal stories, and even laugh about bath bombs. Along the way, they discuss how surrendering to God is not about weakness but about finding strength, wisdom, and authentic joy. This episode is, "Align and Trust in God" and we are so glad you are here!

Episode 102 - Align and Trust in God

Cydni: [00:00:00] And the new thing is that nicotine's very good for you. Who can you trust? Who can you trust? God. That is true. You could trust God, Here we are, trusting God. Look at us, look at us. Jazz fingers.

Sher: Alright, Cydni, our last few episodes have been about finding peace and happiness during times of trial. today we wanted to talk about how during those difficult times and just in life in general, life becomes a lot easier if you just surrender yourself and align yourself with God's will.

Cydni: That makes me think of a, raging river that if you're trying to swim against it, that's very difficult. I would imagine I would never do that. I hate the water, but some people probably would try and you go against the current, but instead you just relax and your head gets. Banged on rocks and you almost drown but you find purpose in that, right? Isn't that what we gathered that [00:01:00] you're not going to feel good all the time, but you don't have to feel good all the time It's okay to not be happy all the time But also if you're drowning a little bit That's okay.

Sher: I think that was one of the worst analogies I've ever heard.

Cydni: Could I just mention this? So speaking of water, we have bath bombs and the prize in them. Have you seen those? There's bath bombs and they have a prize in the middle. You know I'm talking about? Yes. Okay. We have those and there is a collection of little baby Jesus's or, grown up Jesus. It's a surprise. The bath bombs is Jesus surprise.

What? I got them. Why? For Christmas. For you? Or for your children? No, for my children and for neighbor gifts.

Can you imagine that if you're like, Oh, a bath bomb and then it's a baby Jesus, that would be an ultimate surprise. But I just wanted to say, speaking of this. It has nothing to do with anything, but Iyana used one recently and there was a Jesus and we were like, Oh, look, there's a Jesus in the bath bomb.

That's funny. And then [00:02:00] she was putting it on the water. She's like, he does walk on water. And then she said I bet those fish that day were like, what's going on? I didn't know they could do that. And I just never in my life considered the perspective of the fish when Jesus walked on water.

Sher: Do you think they were following him?

Cydni: I think so, because how else would they have that conversation Iana made up?

Sher: That's true.

Cydni: They're like, Look at this trick. Never seen it before.

Sher: Well, I'm pretty sure they knew that it was God walking on water.

Cydni: they did, but I think that sometimes in our life we know it's God, but we're still a little surprised.

Sher: That was a good tie in

Cydni: there. Thank you. Anyway. That's what I got.

, I'm just letting it flow. That's what flowed in me today. was Iana's testimony that Christ did walk on water on Tuesday p. m. 's bath time.

Sher: we're going to continue to talk about surrendering and aligning ourself with God's will, and so the first thing we're going to do is define the word surrender this means that we're giving control to [00:03:00] God. So I guess you're getting rushed down the river. Actually does work.

Cydni: Someone out there got that. You got it now, but someone else got it a few steps before you. That's fine.

Sher: in my defense of your river analogy, my brain stopped working after you said hitting your head on the rock. And then I absolutely quit listening to everything else you said after that.

Cydni: Because of a past trauma?

Sher: Well, maybe because I thought brain injuries and it just kind of hit a little close to home. And then I have no idea what you said after that.

Cydni: Okay. That's fair. I was just thinking that when you're going. against the current. Everyone knows that it's difficult, but you accept and flow. I think it's still difficult.

Sher: I do too. I now understand what you were saying. I just couldn't get past the brain trauma.

Cydni: In your defense, I probably said it really weird and wrong.

Sher: Or in my defense, I honestly did stop listening.

Cydni: In your defense, I did talk about a river then to a bath bomb that had baby Jesus in it.

Sher: All right, so you are, you're giving in the control to God and trusting in [00:04:00] his plan and just letting go of our own desires. the world often sees this as a weakness. Oh, you're going to surrender. That's negative to the world, but when you're surrendering yourself to God, it shows great strength and humility. you're giving up what you want and those earthly desires and pleasures or choices or whatever to honor your Father in Heaven.

Cydni: I actually heard someone say it this way. If you're surrendering to a general, then yes, you're losing, you're quitting, you're throwing up the white flag. But if you surrender to God, that is the ultimate victory. And I liked that.

Sher: That's a really good way to look at it. The example I thought of is me as a teenager and thinking my parents didn't know anything. You know, they give advice and tell you what's up and what's down and stuff. And I just thought, what do you know? You're old and you don't remember anything. I'm just so

Cydni: glad my kids won't think like that. I'm glad that they're just like, wow, this woman's intelligent.

Sher: I hear that every time I'm around your children, actually, they say that.

Cydni: They're like, [00:05:00] did you know that's my mom? She's brilliant. I don't know what I did right there,

Sher: but I'm gonna encourage this delusion. You're absolutely right, Cydni. but, the older I get, the more I realize that my parents, not only did they have experience, but they had gained wisdom and they were trying to pass it on to me, in Proverbs chapter three, verses five through six, it says, trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways, acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. so we don't have the same perspective. As God, just like I didn't have the same perspective as a teenager as my parents, they had more experience, they had gained more wisdom.

obviously our Heavenly Father has gained the ultimate amount of wisdom and knowledge and perspective. as I was reading the scripture, it reminded me of, in Isaiah chapter 55 verses 8 through 9, it says, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For [00:06:00] as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. sometimes it's really hard to admit that we don't know everything. But we're Children, we are God's children, and we have a very, very, very small sliver of knowledge and wisdom compared to God.

If we willingly acknowledge. That we don't know everything and we don't have all the wisdom, but we are willing to align ourselves with God's will, then he will direct us and guide us even when we can't see over the hill or when we're being rushed down the river.

Cydni: I like the reminder that we are children because technically we're adults. But according to what we are learning podcast this day, we're really just children. So when my kids teachers call or something along those lines, I could just say, I am a child. I don't know what your expectations are for me, but I'm just a child.

Sher: why do you make me edit these things out?

Cydni: I know [00:07:00] but I just feel like you gave me some backing. Okay, and one more thing speaking of teens Can I just share another thing that has nothing to do with anything, which is the flow I'm going with today I do remember a time my dad shared wisdom and it worked for me as a teen because he told me Do not drink alcohol. You're my daughter. You will like it way too much. I just know it and then you will not be able to stop. So don't do it. And I thought that honesty was so helpful and that is one of the reasons why I never was tempted is that I just thought my dad was right. I probably would like it too much. Not like it's bad for you, but you're gonna like it too much and then you're gonna have problems because of that. And I just really appreciated that.

Sher: That is really good. and very honest.

Cydni: Good job, Dad.

Sher: And way to go you for listening. One of the examples that I thought of is, I'm going to go back to my history vibe, Cydni.

Yay. History. Your favorite. So, in the American Revolution, America should not have won. George Washington wrote a letter to Congress as the war [00:08:00] was winding down, and he said, I have often wondered that we should hear so little of the prayers of the soldiers. Of the men, I believe that the effects of divine providence have been so signally manifested in our behalf that we cannot doubt, but that he has in this instance, as in many others overruled the councils of our enemies and thereby preserved us the dangers of a ruinous war.

So here's George Washington saying that you can't overlook the prayers. of the everyday soldiers and the everyday citizens, they were , actively aligning their will to the will of God . And all of the wisdom of men that could be found in great Britain could not defeat God and his power to usher in the agency of men and the freedom from dictators.

This only happened. And it was only possible because many of our leaders and thankfully even more of the people surrendered themselves to the will of God. And they were willing to lose battles. [00:09:00] They were willing to go through harsh winters. They were willing to lose their homes, their land, their farms, and they did all of this because they truly believed in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

. They believed in the agency of men and women. And it changed the 13 colonies and the entire world. C. S. Lewis said, give up yourself and you will find your real self. And this is what happened to America. They weren't meant to be. British citizens controlled by a king. They were meant to start their own country and usher in freedom.

Cydni: Man, I love George Washington. He was so good in Hamilton.

Sher: Oh my gosh. Every time you do that, it's just like you stick a knife into my heart and you just twist it a little. So, thank you, Cydni. You've seen Hamilton now, so you know. I really liked it.

Cydni: So, you know there's truth in that. There is truth in that, yes. And also truth in his actual quotes.

Sher: Yes,

Cydni: more truth there. It's really tying together because we talked about sacrifice, letting go of what you want now and [00:10:00] comforts you want now for something that will be better in the future. it's also not about you. It's about others. And there's such a good example of this right here. Good job. Sure. That went really well with this podcast episode. Thank you.

. So, with all of these great opportunities to have more blessings just come pouring down on your head, why is it so difficult to align Your will with God's will. why do we fear that we're going to miss out on something if we let go of our earthly choices sins and pleasures. So the world perspective is that we get afraid of losing our independence or our success or losing control. But the irony is when we surrender to God, it actually brings more peace, more freedom, and more joy. I'm just going all in on history today. This reminded me of the pilgrims who left everything behind in England, trusting in God, they came to a new land, and they started a new life. And william Bradford said, Thus out of small beginnings greater things have been [00:11:00] produced by his hand that made all things of nothing, and gives being to all things that are. And as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled has shone unto many. Yea, in some sort to our whole nation, let the glorious name of Jehovah have all the praise. So God made all things. Out of nothing. And just one candle can light a thousand. That's all God needs to make something beautiful. from each one of us. If you're willing to surrender yourself to him.

That quote reminds me I just recently listened to a sermon where the preacher said nobody puts a candle in a lit up room. But then I was like, there are sins that some people do, but that aside, let's just pretend that doesn't have to do with it. But he says that. Candles are meant for dark spaces because the light's needed. And so often we are given challenges as Christians to help our lights come out so that then God can [00:12:00] have us in places that we need to shine.

Cydni: And I like the question, why do we fear we will miss out? Because I think that's a real honest feeling. I think that when it comes to certain words like submit or surrender or obedience, that it does feel like we're going to give something and not get anything back and we're going to lose everything.

And it just feels that. out of control, chaotic feeling that is not comfortable. It is a true human nature that we would rather hold on to pain that we are familiar with than to maybe have joy that is a lot better, but we just want to hold on to what we know and not let go. And I love this quote by Jackie Hill Perry. She says, we think if we give up what God is telling us to give up. If we hand over that thing that means the most to us, if we just decide to stop bowing down at the foot of the idols of our own making, we reckon that surrender to God somehow will relinquish our joy. This is an ancient [00:13:00] lie, because what it says is, once my hands are open and empty, that God is not big enough, or good enough to fill them up again.

And I think that's really important to think about. Why do we feel like if our hands are empty, God cannot fill them bigger? Is it we don't feel like we're deserving enough for it or that what we have is enough and that's it and we're not going to get more? So how dare you even dream bigger or expect more or want more? And so I think that is an ancient lie.

I also heard the most interesting illustration of surrender I've never heard before. Where this woman talked about the woman at the well with surrender.. So here's a woman and Jesus at the well and Jesus asked her, for a drink of water and she doesn't give him a drink she, is like, how is it that you being a Jew? Asketh me, which am a woman of Samaria, for a drink, because Jews have no dealings. Jesus is asking for something and there is immediate [00:14:00] doubt and a lack of understanding and not just obedience. It's like, why are you doing this? And in her defense, I was thinking when I read this, this woman's been married five times, it says, right?

Sher: Yeah, multiple times, I don't remember how many.

Cydni: So maybe at first she's like, here's another man asking for something. I feel like that's to be added, she's just dealt with several men and now she's Like Oh great, someone else wants something from me. We don't even have anything to do with each other. Like what is going on? And I think that's okay. You know, at first she just hesitates. She doesn't understand. She doesn't want to do it. but Jesus said this to her, if thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee, give me drink, thou wouldest have asked of him and he would have given the living water.

So if you just understood a little bit more and had a little bit more faith, you would never have hesitated. and then she says, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with. So he doesn't have his own pitcher or anything to draw the water up. And What came to my mind when I read this is that sometimes I think we don't surrender or submit or [00:15:00] Give what we have because maybe we don't feel like it's enough and maybe I'm stretching this a little bit but it just came to my heart that maybe sometimes what we have just doesn't feel like it's enough to give so it doesn't even matter but what I love so much about this story is that eventually the woman's like, okay, I'm in, give me this water that you talk about because it's the living water. He says, if you keep Drinking this water, you're going to thirst again, but if you take what I have, you will never thirst again. And she says, I'm in. I'm interested. I would like this. then she leaves her old picture and she goes to town and she tells everybody about the situation. The story here of surrender is the really human feelings of fear and doubt and lack of understanding, but then getting to the point of. believing so much that you leave behind everything that you had and you go forward and in doing that, leaving behind her picture. It's her letting go of everything she's ever known and moving forward to a greater knowledge and a greater testimony and something that is [00:16:00] eternal.

I had never considered this in the story of surrender before, but I feel like I really relate in some of these hesitations and fears that she had. And I hope one day I could say, okay, I'll leave my old picture behind. Cause there's something so much better ahead of me. You

Sher: This is such a great example because this was a woman who I am assuming had a very bad reputation in the community, she was also. Someone that was looked down upon by Jews but God knew what was in her heart and going back to William Bradford's quote where he said by his hand that made all things of nothing, I'm sure she thought that she had absolutely nothing. Zero things, except for, a bad reputation, and that was probably about it. But God knew what was in her heart, and he used this woman to testify that he was the living God. That he was there to save all mankind. Because he knew that she would leave everything behind and [00:17:00] run into town and start telling everybody. I think that is a great example of what God can do when we choose to surrender and align ourself with Him.

Cydni: And I think that ties perfectly in the beginning when I talked about water because there's more water. So there you go.

Sher: Very good point, Cydni. another thing I think people might think of is, will I lose my joy if I surrender to God? And I think it's okay to think, well, if I fully submit, will I still be happy? Because we don't understand that true, full, 100 percent obedience brings joy into our lives. When I was little I don't even know whose book it was. I don't know if it was my mom's or What are my brothers? I have no idea. And what was it my dad said? Reading's not for real men. Anyway there was a book that I would often get out, and I didn't even know how to read the book yet, because I was too little, but The reason I like looking at it is the cartoonist had drawn all these cartoons all over to help illustrate the point.

And one of the pictures [00:18:00] that I clearly remember is they had taken and drawn like cigarettes, wrapping up somebody so that they couldn't move, and my little brain understood at a very young age. How You can get chained by your earthly choices. And the artist made it look really funny, but it became so real to me. And I understood that earthly pleasures have the ability to tie you up and to bind you where you are no longer making your own choices anymore. those are the things that are now controlling you. And so if we don't surrender to God, we surrender to fear, pride, sin, or to the world's.

Pressures, that's what will happen. And Aristotle has one of my very favorite quotes, which is nature abhors a vacuum, which means that , if we take God out, there will be an empty space and it's going to be filled up with something, whether it's fear pride sin or the pressures of the world, like we just mentioned, but whatever it is that replaces where God should be, . It's usually not good for society. [00:19:00] And it's definitely not good for you. So if we're clinging to what we think that we need, our hands aren't open to receive God's blessings. Then God can't fill that up He'll replace those bad things with good things But we have to be able and willing to trust that God is capable of doing that.

And in order to do that. We cannot be passive We can't just surrender to God and just say okay. I surrender My hands are open. I'm waiting for the blessings. That's not how it works. After we surrender, we now have to actively seek God's will. We can do this through prayer, scripture study, service, going to church, doing all of those types of things to actively align our desires with God's. An example I thought of that explains this is President Lincoln in his second inaugural address. He said, referring to the North and South, both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes his aid against the other.

It may seem strange that any men [00:20:00] should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces. Let us judge, not that we be not judged, the prayers of both could not be answered. That of neither has been answered fully, that Almighty has his own purposes.

we need to actively be seeking God's side, not assuming he is going to agree with us. We need to figure out what his side is and get on his side and from. The Civil War, should learn that God wants agency for all men and women. We as a country needed to get on his side, and it took a war to do it, but Abraham Lincoln eventually guided us to that point. And so this is an active pursuit of being on God's side as what can bring us peace and happiness in this life. and eventually for eternity in the next.

Cydni: I just would much rather just assume that God is going to agree with me though, is the one thing that stuck out there. That would be nice. That one cut a [00:21:00] little bit when you read it because it's a very high dose of truth that I just didn't want to swallow today.

Sher: I was thinking the same thing

Cydni: I heard someone say in the studying that I've done that if you're having a hard time swallowing the word surrender or submit or any of those kinds of words that he thinks of it as you are giving Christ access. to whatever you're surrendering.

So do you believe that Jesus is Lord? And do you mean that you believe that? And if you do, do you believe that he is Lord over everything? Do you believe that he is Lord over your life? And if you do, then give him access. To your life, and that could look different in different ways. It could be giving him access to a relationship in your life or thoughts or sins and habits that we have or doubts or fears, but it's a partnership.

It's saying, I am letting you take control. Because look at what I have accomplished without you. Let's just pause and [00:22:00] reflect. Okay, that one hit me just a little bit too hard, That was the hard truth right there. I know, I pondered on that today to just think for a second. Because When we think how we accepted Christ a lot of people might think of the day that they were saved or the day they were baptized.

But what about our daily lives? Do we in our daily lives give access to Christ and to surrender to him our wills and our desires daily? Not just when I was eight, I was baptized and it was a really warm and Fuzzy filling, but it's more than that. It's do you give him everything and allow him to take control of your life?, and honestly, Sher, this all could have been Summed up with one song that our friend Anna shared with us That was written by someone in her family.

I'm not gonna read the whole thing but I just I'm going to simply illustrate what the song is about there's a sweet little girl who has a plastic pearl necklace and she loves it and she wears it all the time and she doesn't want it ever to be off of her and at night her [00:23:00] father says can I have that pearl necklace? she just is distraught. absolutely, you may not have this necklace. This is my necklace and I love it. And so he's like, okay, I understand. I love you. And then the next night, honey, can I have that plastic pearl necklace of yours? And again, just sobbing You may not. You may not have this. I will not give this to you. I love you. But no, the reply again is just, I love you too. It's okay. And then eventually it gets to the place where one night the girl says, with tears streaming down her face, that I love you so much. I'm ready to give you my pearl necklace. she gives the plastic pearl necklace to her father. And in return, he gives her a string of real. authentic pearls. our hope is that we can all learn to truly and genuinely surrender to God, to have the faith that no matter what our past looks like, no matter the choices that we've made, that we rededicate ourself to a true and authentic surrender. To God knowing and having [00:24:00] the faith needed and the hope that we will get something so much greater in return And then like the woman at the well be a light and share it with other people that they too can have that joy and that peace in their life.

Sher: Final thoughts. True peace and happiness comes when we surrender our will to God, trusting in his wisdom rather than our own. The world may see surrender as weakness, but in reality, It is a sign of strength, humility, and faith. Just as a child eventually realizes the wisdom of their parents. History teaches us that great things happen when people align their desires with God's will. Whether it was the American Revolution, the Pilgrim's Journey, or Lincoln's plea for America to get on God's side. When we let go of fear, pride, and worldly expectations, we make room for God's blessings, finding true joy, and freedom in obedience. Our Heavenly Father. It's just waiting to hand us that beautiful strand of pearls.

Cydni: We challenge [00:25:00] you to give up something and in replace, we challenge you to try to add something positive, whether it's more prayer, more journaling, or more of an attitude of gratitude. This is our prayer from Cydni and Cher. More vitamins. Maybe add more vitamins.

Sher: All of this? All of it. All of it? We want to talk about all of it. No, we don't want to do that. Sorry, my brain, I feel like I'm 10 seconds behind everything you say something and then I get it like later. It's like, oh, I get it now.

Cydni: I think you don't have to take accountability for that. It could be me. No, it's me. I'll just interrupt you when I want to. Is that fine? Is someone here? Does he just bark sometimes? Like a dog? hold on, let me make sure I read this right. That's my reading noise. Is that fine with you? [00:26:00] If I don't read the Bible exact, if I make up stuff, is that fine? Yeah. Go for it. Cydni. . I'll just be quiet. So it's easier to edit. are your editing skills scared right now?

Sher: were you done? Yeah. Okay. Please. This is,

Cydni: face right now is like, I don't know how I'm gonna edit this. Give me 10 seconds and I'll

Sher: figure out what you

Cydni: just said. Nobody's gonna figure out what I said in 10 seconds. Because here you are 40 jobless and in someone's basement me

Sher: God hard truth for Cydni over there Take my age out. You could be teaching kids that man, do they have some potty mouse on them? Woo.

Cydni: I know it's quite impressive. Actually, I never was very good at swearing. I tried. I took a stab at it one afternoon and I knew it wasn't for me.

Sher: Well, these kids have mastered it. I'm grateful they don't swear at me. They just swear around me. I feel like I'm in a swear tunnel. That is

Cydni: different. That's completely different Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. Jumpy jacks
