Cydni and Sher
Life will give us reasons to feel discouraged, disheartened and broken. We choose to take from these moments reasons to find courage, hope and wholeness. When life tries to crack us, we choose to crack up. When we are too weary, we seek strength. When life feels too dark, we remind ourselves from words in the Hebrews “we are not of them who draw back.” Rather we choose to move forward Together.
Cydni and Sher discuss stories from the scriptures, history and their own experiences finding a common truth that there is purpose, meaning and learning to be done all directed by an all powerful, wise and loving God. Come laugh with us or at us, either way we are so glad you are here.

Episode 130 - Light and Truth
Cydni: [00:00:00] I'm not trying to be blasphemous here, but
Sher: why start now Cydni
Cydni: You know, in our church history, there's Porter Rockwell. I'm sure you're familiar with them.
Sher: Yes, of course.
Cydni: I love him because he is so mischievous and reckless and I really appreciate that about people. You can relate to him. Yeah. That's the point is that he was known for being a great shot and he has some say more kills than famous people like. What's the name? Doc Martin. What's the name?
Sher: It's Doc Martin. Definitely. Doc Martin. Dr. Pepper. Yeah, that's it.
Cydni: I have been to Tombstone.
Sher: Oh, I know. I just came. Oh. Without looking. I clicked when I was typing it. When you saw it. When I saw it Now I know. What is it? And doc holiday.
Cydni: Oh my gosh. Yeah. Doc Holiday, he had more kills which, I mean, that's not to be celebrated, but it's just that he was Joseph Smith, the prophet's bodyguard, and he was so mischievous, and I love the stories about him trying to distract people by letting their [00:01:00] cows or horses go then I was also thinking of Jay Golden Kimble, and I have a point with this, but over the pulpit, this man said I won't go to hell for swearing because I repent too damn fast. That's great. He also said, what can God do for a liar who refuses to repent? Can the Lord save him? He can't claim salvation baptizing him and water will not settle the trouble unless you keep him under. So the point is this, because we're talking about the Holy Spirit today, obviously this is tying in. I just wanna say Sher. I think I have the same Holy Ghost is these men.
Sher: Oh, now finally, I get it.
Cydni: In the scriptures, how often is the Holy Ghost described as calm and quiet whisper? And I'm like, but what about the calamity? What about the mischievousness? 'cause like, did I sign up for that? I don't know. I'm just saying those two men were men of God. And I'm pretty sure the Holy Spirit teaches me the same way that he taught [00:02:00] them.
Sher: That makes a lot of sense actually. I think that is probably one of the most insightful things that you've ever said on this podcast.
Cydni: I think it's because I've been studying the Holy Ghost and the Holy Ghost is trying to be like Sy. You don't have to be like everybody else. You might be like these guys who swear a little bit and get into a little bit of mischievousness and have a little facial hair. It's okay.
Cydni: Welcome to the Cydni and Sher podcast. We're so glad you're here.
Sher: Today, Cydni we are gonna talk about greater light and truth. All month long. We have been talking about education and learning and knowledge and pondering so you can retain that information. And today we wanna talk about. Letting the Holy Spirit guide us because the Spirit teaches us truth if we choose to listen. So let's start by talking about what does the Holy Spirit do in John chapter 14, verse 26, our Savior teaches us this, but the comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the father will [00:03:00] send in my name, he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever. I have said unto you. So from this, we learn, first of all. He is the Comforter. How would you like that for a title? He's the comforter. That's so awesome.
Cydni: I love it. But what I love most in that is the part where it says, bring things to your remembrance. As someone who doesn't remember things very often, I just have this prayer in my heart that all the things that I've really studied and tried to learn that are in one ear. And out the other ear, one day will be restored in my brain. And so this gives me hope That could be true, that he will bring things to our remembrance. But also could we choose what is brought to Remembrance and what maybe isn't.
Sher: I feel the same way. I was just thinking the exact same thing. Cydni I wanna pick and choose what I want to remember and what I don't remember. That would be very helpful.
Cydni: Not the offensive sentence that sounded funny when I said it, and then four weeks later I'm like, okay. Is she ever gonna look at [00:04:00] me in the eye again? Probably not. I didn't mean it like that. Should I go talk to her about it like that? Correct. Yeah.
Sher: But also in this verse, we learn that the Holy Ghost teaches us all things and as you said, helps us remember all the words of Christ , and this is really important. He testifies of Christ that is his job.
Cydni: Do you know, just off the top of your head, what verse comes after? That's John 1426. Do you know what John 1427 is? Absolutely not. I know. I just wanted to point out to everyone that you didn't know. I'm going to tell you because I love this.
The next verse is a verse that we know. And we talk about often, I just didn't know they were by each other. The next verse is, "peace I leave with you. My peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth. Give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." I'm not sure I could express the joy I felt through my body when I combine these two scriptures. One that I [00:05:00] know that we're promised to have peace in a way the world cannot give us peace. But then the answer of how, the way he will provide comfort and teaching and peace. Times where it doesn't make sense to have comfort or peace is through the Holy Spirit, which he'll send to us.
Sher: I'm so glad you brought that up because that does make that verse make so much more sense this is what the Holy Ghost can do for us. To add to that, Elder Bednar said "the Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead, the Comforter, a Teacher and a Revelator. He is the messenger for the witness of the Father and the Son." He further said "the Holy Ghost is manifested to men and women on the earth, both as the power and as the gift of the Holy Ghost."
In this, elder Bednar teaches us that the Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead. Again, He's a Comforter, a Teacher, and a Revelator. He is a witness and testifies [00:06:00] not only of our Savior, but of our Heavenly Father, and He manifests to all of us, both the power. The gift of the Holy Ghost.
So how is the Holy Ghost both a power and a gift? First, What does Power of the Holy Ghost mean? This means that the Holy Ghost is available to everybody. To all people, Regardless, it's the Spirit's influence, the power that testifies of truth. So it's those moments of inspiration or confirmation that help guide. Any of us towards Christ and truth. you just have that little feeling in your heart and in your soul, and that thought comes into your brain and you just know, that is the power of the Holy Ghost.
But the gift of the Holy Ghost is received only after you're baptized and confirmation by the laying on of hands. This is the right to the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. As long as we're worthy. [00:07:00] rather than temporary, that's the power of the Holy Ghost. This becomes a covenant, a covenant promise, and the Holy Ghost promises protection guidance, comfort, and ongoing revelation . So imagine like a flashlight that's shining in the dark and it gives enough light to help people find the right path. that is the power of the Holy Ghost. All right. The gift is like carrying a full on flashlight with you all the time. That's super bright. That lights up the whole dark forest. That's the difference between the power and the gift of the Holy Ghost. and We only get to carry this flashlight or have the Holy Ghost with us if we keep our end of the deal with the covenants. That's the only way that light is gonna keep working.
Cydni: I think Elder Bednar is the one to go to for anything with Revelation in the Holy Spirit. He has so much information that is powerful and he simplifies [00:08:00] it for us to be able to understand it, but then also offers. A lot of opportunity to go study and I really liked that about all of his talks about the Holy Spirit meaning I also have some Bednar to tell you. That's the whole point of that, but he talked about covenants.
I'm glad you brought it up. . He explains and reminds what a covenant is, which is a two-way promise, and he just says that we need to understand that we don't get to pick what the promise is, but we do get to pick if we want to. Go into the covenant and I thought that was worth understanding that we have the agency to make a covenant, a promise with God. We don't get to pick the blessing, but we do get to pick if we want that blessing.
And I thought that was just a very simple and important doctrine to understand. and with that information, he talked about the baptismal covenant. It has to be administered by someone with the proper authority from God. And then he [00:09:00] reminds us of the covenant, which we are entering into. And that is, "that we witness, that we are willing to take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ, that we will always remember him and that we will keep his commandments."
And he goes on to say, " that is the covenant and the promise blessing is that we will then have a Spirit to be with us always." And I think that, again, simple doctrine. But incredibly important. When I think about the Holy Ghost and the importance of the having the Holy Ghost, I always go to third Nephi. There's so many things in here that point to how important the companionship is with the Holy Ghost.
In third Nephi. This is when Jesus comes to the people and they get to be with Christ. They learn about baptism and they have the sacrament, and they see healings take place right before their eyes. And then before Jesus leaves. They ask for something and what they desire the most. I always think about this [00:10:00] because here they've just spent so much time with Jesus and then they get to ask for what they want, and the apostles that are being left, they say, and they did pray for that which was most desired and they desired that the Holy Ghost should be given unto them.
I've really spent time pondering on this because. I feel like when you've just seen miracles unfold and you've just been given a whole new level of light, that I feel your heart would be in the right place to ask for something that you really want, and they ask for the Holy Ghost, which is the same power and the same gift that is offered to us today. To me, that illustrates how important seeking the Holy Ghost is, and that maybe we don't always understand or appreciate or have an urgency to have that companionship with us. And Jesus does pray that they could have the Holy Ghost and they do receive the Holy Ghost. And then it says this, "and it came to pass that he went Jesus, a little way off and prayed unto [00:11:00] the Father. And Tongue cannot speak the words which he prayed. Neither can be written by man. The words which he prayed and the multitude did hear and do bear record and their hearts were open and they did understand in their hearts the words which he prayed." The reason these verses are important. Is that it was only through the Holy Ghost that they could understand, and their hearts could be open to what he was saying.
It says that man cannot utter it and it can't be written down this language of the spirit. They understood only because they desired the Holy Spirit, and then were given the gift of the Holy Spirit.
And something new for me that I will be taking away from studying this podcast is the word companion. I feel like we say it a lot in church to have the companionship of the Holy Ghost, but I have thought differently about it this time. Do you remember when it was really popular?
You probably remember this, I'm sure, Sher, that people did tiktoks and [00:12:00] reels to, I'm looking for a man in finance trust fund. Six five blue eyes. Totally remember that. Absolutely. Remember when you did that TikTok dance? Mm-hmm. And you were like, I remember Uhhuh, I'm looking for a man in finance. Yeah. Six five. That one.
Sher: Yeah. I totally remember.
Cydni: this is obviously where my mind goes with this since I have the same Holy Ghost companionship as Porter Rockwell. So my mind went here. 'cause I thought, how many people were like, that's the kind of companion I want. That's the kind of partner I want. I want them to be good in finance and I want them to be tall and have blue eyes and. lots of money like what a woman would do to get that kind of man, like how much Botox they'd be willing to put into their bodies.
How big of a bosom could they get to get that companionship? I just thought maybe we should take that same urgency of companionship and apply it to the Holy Ghost, obviously. That was beautiful. It was modern day Shakespeare, in my opinion. So. I've been thinking a lot about companion and maybe a little bit about what I did [00:13:00] to get Ben, the effort and the work and the dedication I put in to get that ring from Ben.
I thought about this and I thought. There has to be a way to have the same urgency to have this companion with us because I will tell you that I got the ring from Ben and we are constantly pain in the butts and it is a lot of work. But here is a companion that is a teacher and a guide, and a protector and a comfort.
It is not toxic. The only one toxic in this relationship is you. The Holy Ghost is not toxic. You are the problem if there's a problem, and that is truth. But in other companionships that we're willing to like, you know, sell our left arm for We put in a whole lot more effort And with that I thought companion. I looked up a few different definitions just to try to put this into perspective and make what happens in my head come outta my mouth. But a companion is one who serves as a friend or a partner in something, , a noun describing another. That one desires to associate with [00:14:00] which that flips. It does the Holy Ghost one associate with. Ew. A partnership involves a mindset of collaboration, mutual respect, and shared effort toward a common goal. I really liked that the Holy Ghost is sharing a common goal to help us get to Christ. And what better companionship partnership, or collaboration is there than to work with someone who loves you and has the goal to get you to Christ.
Sher: You can't get a better companion than that. And what's amazing is it's our choice. We have the choice to keep our covenants and allow the Holy Ghost and the spirit to be with us always or not. That's all based on us.
Cydni: I recognize I could have said that without talking about a man in finance and a trust fund. Six five blue eyes. But I just had to follow the spirit on that one. Sher.
Sher: Of course. Thank you, Porter.
Cydni: I feel like we should just address exactly what we're getting in this companionship a little bit [00:15:00] better because we've touched on it. We've touched on the things that the spirit will bring to the relationship, which. Is important and with heaviness that is happening in the world and will continue to happen in the world. We believe in a God who offers peace when. Peace doesn't seem possible. And he does this through the Holy Spirit. And it seems to me that it would make a whole lot of sense to understand exactly what we're getting when we choose to let go of things of the world and focus on things of the spirit that it is and fact worth it. One thing I found in First Corinthians is that's where it talks about spiritual gifts, which we have talked about throughout the whole thing. It tells us how we get spiritual gifts. I have never considered the fact that if we want spiritual gifts. And we are to seek them. We are given them by the Holy Spirit. We have to be right with the Holy Ghost to receive the gifts that we're seeking. And he wants us to have them because it furthers the work and it helps us [00:16:00] get to our mutual goal of getting to the Savior.
And it says that the manifestations of the spirit is given to every man to profit. for one, it is given by the spirit, the word of wisdom, and two, another, the word of knowledge by the same spirit. Throughout this whole chapter, it talks about the different gifts of the spirit that are given to you by the spirit.
This is a very giving partner to have in your life . And in John, chapter 16, he says, how be it when he, the spirit of truth has come, he will guide you into all truth. And in Romans five it says. And Hope maketh not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in the hearts by the Holy Ghost, which is given unto us. And John again, he'll talk about the spirit of truth. In a world where we are told that even the most elite can be deceived, we are promised if we have the spirit with us, that we will have the spirit of truth of discernment with us, and Sher and I both, I think I could speak to, you have [00:17:00] had experiences where it doesn't make sense for things to happen, to feel certain ways during hard times, or to have promptings that guide us where a miracle takes place. That is because of the spirit. And of course, in any good relationship, communication is key. Which will move us to the next part is how do we learn how the spirit speaks to us?
Sher: That's really difficult because all of us are different. The spirit speaks to all of us differently, Elder Craig C Christensen in a talk quoted President Boyd k Packer, who said. "The Holy Ghost speaks with a voice that you feel more than you hear. While we speak of listening to the whisperings of the Spirit, most often one describes a spiritual. Prompting by saying, I had a feeling." Then Elder Christensen goes on to say, " it is through the sacred feelings from the Holy Ghost that we come to know [00:18:00] what God would have us do for this. As stated in scripture is the spirit of revelation." In DNC, chapter eight verse two. It further explains to us. "Yay. Behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart."
So there are two witnesses in your head and in your heart. And you'll have that feeling. Maybe it is a thought, but you'll just have this feeling of what you should be doing. And again, everyone receives it differently. So the key is to practice. Once you have that feeling or thought, act on it and keep practicing and then you'll get better at it. That's something I've really tried to focus on lately, is that when I get those promptings, when I have those thoughts. To act on it because so often I don't do that. And it takes practice to understand what the Holy Ghost is trying to tell you.
Cydni: When you were [00:19:00] talking, I thought of how often people say people don't remember what you say, they remember how you make them feel, and truly filling is such the language of the spirit.
Sher: I absolutely agree, because that is what got me through teaching. I knew darn well those kids in my class were probably not gonna remember one word I said, but they would always remember how I made them feel. And so. I tried really hard to be nice to him and have fun and to make it so my classroom felt safe. I wanted that feeling in my room, and I think that's the goal of most teachers because honestly, they're not gonna remember anything.
But all of this leads us to the entire point of the episode. Today we're gonna talk about the greater light and truth in d and c, chapter 50, verse 14, it says " to preach my gospel by the spirit, even the comforter, which was sent forth to teach the truth." And then DNC 93 versus 36, 37 and 39 it says. " The [00:20:00] glory of God is intelligence, or in other words, light and truth. Light and truth. Forsake that evil one." Then here comes 39 "and that wicked one cometh and taketh away light and truth through disobedience from the children of men and because of the tradition of their fathers."
So from this, we learn that light truth, intelligence, which the spirit testifies of chases away Satan, but Satan, if we allow it to happen. Chases away light and truth from our lives. So this is what I'm thinking, Cydni with this episode, I feel like I'm doing all right. I'm just doing my thing, going to church, praying, reading my scriptures, you know, just kind of doing my thing, but I'm very casual with it.
In the last couple of weeks, I have felt as I'm just being casual with going to church and doing my thing. [00:21:00] Satan and his followers are preparing for battle and they're taking it serious, and they're out to win this battle of good and evil, and I'm just chilling. I'm just hanging out , yeah, I go to church. I do what I need to do, but am I really taking it serious? Because I'm telling you right now. Based on some of the things that have happened the last little bit, Satan is taking it serious and his followers are taking it serious and they want to move us, take away that light and truth and intelligence and the spirit from us., They don't want the spirit to be able to testify of truth. And I've realized more than ever that if I want to stay on God's side. I need to do everything I can to have the power and the gift of the Holy Ghost with me always. I want to keep my covenant so that I do get the gift of the Holy Ghost because the Holy Spirit teaches truth and [00:22:00] everything is so confusing right now that I need the Spirit constantly helping me so I can discern between Truth and lies further in d and c chapter 93, it says, and truth is, knowledge of things as they are and as they were, and as they are to come. And whatsoever is more or less than. This is the spirit of that wicked one who was a liar from the beginning. After I read these verses, it made me wonder, what do I believe that is a deception of Satan.
Every exaggeration, every lie, every untruth, every misinformation is from the spirit of Satan who was a liar from the beginning. So in order to wade through all of this chaos, the noise and distractions we need to have the Holy Spirit. In 2018, president Nelson said. "In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting [00:23:00] and constant influence of the Holy Ghost."
We must listen and be worthy to have the power and gift of the Holy Ghost. To stay on God's side. That's where I wanna be in these last days. And the only way we can do that is if we do everything we can to keep our covenants so we can have the gift of the Holy Ghost to be with us always.
Cydni: I also have felt an urgency in the last few weeks, and I have thought of a Neely Maxwell quote about discipleship. " Serious disciples are not only urged to do good, but also to avoid growing weary of doing good. They are not only urged to speak the truth, but also to speak the truth in love.
They're not only urged to endure all things, but also to endure them well. They are not only urged to be devoted to God's cause, but also to be prepared to sacrifice all things giving if necessary. The last full measure of devotion. They're not only to do [00:24:00] many things of worth, but are also to focus on the weightier matters of things of most worth.
They are not only urged to forgive, but also to forgive 70 times seven. They're not only to be engaged in good causes, but also they are to be anxiously engaged. They are not only to do right, but also to do right by the right reasons.
They are told to get on the straight and narrow path, but then they're told this is only the beginning, not the end. They're not only to endure enemies, but also to pray for them and love them. They're urged to not only worship God, but astonishingly, they are instructed to strive to become like him in the midst of all things.
They are given a Sabbath day for rest, during which they do the sweetest, but often the hardest work of all. I've thought of this because of what you said about being casual. I feel a casual sense in my life as well. And when I think about the call to be a disciple of Christ, I realize there's more urgency [00:25:00] in this then there is casual.
Something I've learned is the spirit talks to me through music for a long time. Now, when my mind gets a little bit too busy, which happens, I have found somehow I stumbled across the song, let the Holy Spirit Guide calms me down and helps me to focus.
And every time I feel the spirit and the words are, "let the Holy Spirit guide, let him teach us what is true. He will testify of Christ lighter. Our minds with heaven's view," when I get a little too chaotic in my head, which is hourly, at this point, I have found if I repeat the verse over and over, I will feel peace.
Recently I pulled up a talk that I've been saving to listen to in preparation for some episodes, and I pushed play and got to the dishes and surprisingly it started with a song, but I didn't know what song it was because it wasn't sung in English, but it was familiar and [00:26:00] I stopped doing the dishes and I. Focused on what I was listening to and I didn't understand still because it was in Japanese. And I thought, why is this so familiar? I don't currently know Japanese, but I know this and I know how it's making me feel. And I paused and I paid attention. And then the second verse started, and that was in English.
It was let the Holy Spirit guide and I thought, is this not the most beautiful example for me to reflect on that there in a different language was something that called me and said, this is a spirit you love and a spirit that helps you focus in a spirit of truth. And once I listened, I learned something because I've never paid attention to the next two verses. But I did because I was focused and I learned from this experience. The next two verses, "let the Holy Spirit guard, let him whisper, govern choice. He will lead us safely [00:27:00] home if we listen to his voice. Let the spirit heal our hearts through his quiet, gentle power. May we purify our life to receive him our by hour." this personal experience for me. Taught me so much in such a short time if I really wanna learn from the spirit, I can, but I have to pay attention. I have to make time to ponder, and I have to make time to listen.
And above all, what I learned was that having the spirit with me is a choice. In the song it says, "let the". It's my own personal choice. And I will show that through my actions, what I listen to, how I act, how I talk about people that will then let the spirit dwell with me.
And just like you said, Sher earlier that having the gift of the Holy Ghost is like carrying a heavy duty flashlight. I thought that's a great word for it because caring. To me shows effort and if we desire to be a serious [00:28:00] disciple of Jesus Christ, that will require effort.
We challenge you this week to make more time to have the Holy Ghost with you, to spend time pondering on what you need to get rid of and what you need to make more time for. That you can have the gift of the Holy Spirit with you.
Sher: And this brings us to our final thoughts. The Holy Spirit is our constant companion, guiding, teaching, and testifying of Christ. His power inspires all and His gift received through baptismal covenants offers ongoing guidance, protection, and clarity in a world full of noise and deception. Listening to the Spirit helps us discern truth and stay on God's path. Choosing to follow his promptings brings light understanding and the confidence to walk securely in faith. This is our prayer.
Cydni: From Cydni and Sher. [00:29:00] Do you know it or did you forget? I forgot. You forgot. Let's be honest. Here. I did. I forgot. 'cause you said Doc. I'm gonna try to remember. Doc, doctor, doc, doc, doc, doc, doc, doc.
Sher: Alma, long, we have been talking about,
Cydni: I think you should say month again. I don't think you'll like it.
Sher: Okay. Thank you. Alma Month. And now I did it again.
Cydni: I'm laughing at you. I'm a jerk. No, you should. I'm like, haha, you said a word wrong. Okay. What kind of person am I? I know the spirit told me to laugh at you. I'm following impressions.
Sher: It's just month. Mm-hmm. Month.
Cydni: will bring things to my re to my re.
Re. Okay. You can't say month. I can't say remembrance. That's all works out. We're doing great works. [00:30:00] We're doing fine. Everything's fine. my mind. How do I say, okay, Sher's getting a stare down by her dog. Not having it.
Sher: I know. Rudy, you need to chill. elder Bednar said, oh my gosh. Good boy.
Cydni: It's been a rough week. He needs love and a diet Coke.
Sher: Sorry for all the editing. This is all Rudy's fault. You just apologize to yourself. I know. That's self-care. I thank you.
Cydni: I'm so sorry about the editing share. When I think about bap, I got it. Where are you at? And then final words, Cher from your Boy. Jay. Golden Kimble. I may not always walk the straight and narrow, but I sure as hell try to cross it as often as I can. I love him.
Sher: Have a good week. Bye.
Elder Bednar explains the roles of the Holy Ghost as Comforter, Teacher, and
Revelator. This was used in the episode to highlight how the Spirit acts as both a
power available to all and a gift promised through covenants.
Christensen, Craig C. An Unspeakable Gift from God. Ensign, Nov. 2012, pp. 12–15.
Elder Christensen, quoting President Boyd K. Packer, describes how the Spirit
most often communicates through feelings rather than words. This supported the
discussion about recognizing promptings as thoughts and feelings in both the
mind and heart.
Holy Bible. King James Version, John 14:26–27; John 16:13; Romans 5:5.
These verses provided the foundation for understanding the Spirit’s role as
Comforter, Teacher, and the Spirit of Truth, as well as the source of divine peace
and love.
Holy Bible. King James Version, 1 Corinthians 12.
This chapter about spiritual gifts was used to show how the Spirit gives unique
blessings to individuals for the benefit of all.
