Let’s Talk About Drain Pain: What It Is & Why It Happens
Hey Guys! Welcome back!
In this episode, we discuss drain pain and why it. might be happening to you. Below is some more information!
Main Reasons for Drain Pain:
1. The catheter suctions against internal tissue
2. Too rapid or aggressive draining
3. Positioning
4. "Dry drain"
5. Constipation or bloating
💡 Things That Might Help:
- Slowing the drain rate (your nurse can adjust your cycler settings)
- Changing body position during drain
- Adding a small "last fill" (so you’re not totally dry between exchanges)
- Warming the dialysate before use (cold fluid can make things worse)
- Using a heating pad
