Ever wondered why some relationships flourish while others fizzle out? We break down the nuances of relationship dynamics, from celebrating anniversaries to understanding love languages. Our conversation touches on the importance of reciprocal effort, avoiding complacency, and continuing the activities that first brought couples together. Through a blend of personal experiences and thoughtful observations, we aim to provide actionable insights on maintaining a balanced and fulfilling partnership.
Balancing love and career is no easy feat, and our discussion doesn't shy away from the tough questions. High School Relationships and Teacher Crushes
Speaker 1Basically , you just turn it on and it's basically just speak into it . Yep , and then you press record Allow , what up ? Anyway , we're going to start this podcast . This is Prime Example Podcast and I'm your host , leslie , and to my left , your uncle . You introduced yourself , I did .
Speaker 4Okay then Valerie . My name is valerie .
Speaker 2This is our first podcast , so you know speakers , so don't judge yeah , and literally don't judge too much .
Speaker 1If you guys don't want to , it's up to your own personal opinion .
Speaker 2I see you got the whole set and everything .
Speaker 1Hell yeah , I got the whole set . Yeah , guys , oh no , this is plastic . I didn't want to get the metal one because it's portable .
Speaker 2Not , yet it looks nice .
Speaker 1Well , I'm going to eventually end up getting the metal ones , but those ones I'm going to keep at home , but these ones I'm going to take with the homeless people . I'm going to go interview homeless people . I'm only going to give them like $20 , though I'm going to cut that part out . Though , are you going ?
Speaker 2to go around here in downtown ?
Speaker 1Yeah , I want to go visit . I want to . Well , man , I was going to say I'm going to do Angel first .
Speaker 2He's not homeless , y'all you can start with y'all and we okay . So we're gonna , um , let's see , get on the topic . Okay , that's okay . Me , how many do you think you've done ?
Speaker 1I think I've done like around 15 okay , so that's a pretty cool number are we the first family no , I was about to say we had did a podcast with me . Um , yeah , okay it was me . Listo , joshua , how long do ?
Speaker 2they usually last an hour about an hour , half an hour . Okay , cool , I were almost .
Speaker 1I could almost go for two hours depending okay , because I don't know .
Speaker 2You gotta talk to me because I don't know no , I'm gonna agree .
Speaker 1No , because actually I think I did um , I did podcast with this college students , so I had asked the question with college students is it good idea to get relationships in college ? But since you guys only like , basically , you know , we're all in high school , finished high school , basically no , okay . So I had asked my college students how is it really like being in relationships in college ? Yeah , basically like would you want to do it . But my question is what is it a good idea to get into like relationships in high school , is it ? No , I think no it's the thing about high school .
Speaker 2That's when , when you like , be out there , explore what you want . You know like well , yeah , you're gonna drama , you're gonna have drama , but that's part of that's part of the .
Speaker 4That's part of the thing . It's time for you to make friends and explore what you want , meet people , go out because if you're in a relationship , you don't really get to do much without hurting the other person's feelings , you know . Yeah , it's not like high school , there's just some situations where you want to be with just your friends , and when you're in a little situation where you're in a relationship , you can't do that .
Speaker 1You mean like there's time for , but I think it's fun having a relationship in high school it was fun for me .
Speaker 3How long did that last ?
Speaker 2a long time a long time , I mean I can't really in ninth grade . I was with him for four years , throughout all high school , I think so would you consider that your first love ? Yeah , even though it was .
Speaker 4It was crazy , okay , you see , but it was but I don't regret nothing .
Speaker 2It was , it was fun . Don't get me wrong , I did get hurt oh wait , so you got hurt , I got hurt , but that's part of it . That's part of the you know process yeah , men like to get the healing .
Speaker 4No , we don't like to get .
Speaker 2No one likes to get hurt , but it happens you know , we all go through it at one point in our lives you agree with this ?
Speaker 3yeah , we just said he agrees , like have you got in here in the relationship what's the ?
Speaker 4longest relationship you've had three months three months me , me , mine that's the one that I was about , four and with tiffany
Speaker 2we've been together about seven or eight , because I was six , right ?
Speaker 1yeah , so you guys were together for two years before you had um ivy yeah , and I was on some crazy .
Speaker 2How is that in california ?
Speaker 1expensive . That's why I'm here in ohio so how would you average that ? How much are you saving compared to you ?
Speaker 2what you were out there , I don't , I'm not saying shit , no , but it's way cheaper , way cheaper out here to live saving zero dollars you could save if you want to , for real , but I don't have shit you have .
Speaker 1You have a lighter . Where's the lighter ?
Speaker 2We're budgeting .
Speaker 1Do I go get one ?
Speaker 2Budgeting skills out here . Do I go get one ?
Speaker 1Yeah , quick intermission . We're still going to have a little convo Later . So relationships in high school , what do you think ?
Speaker 4Let me go downstairs real quick and see what's going on , and then I'll be back . Let me go downstairs real quick and see what's going on .
Speaker 1And then I'll be back . Let me go check , okay . So yeah , how close do you guys have to be ? How close Were you guys close with your guys' teachers ?
Speaker 2What do you mean ? Did I have anyone close growing up with me ? No , like as teachers , oh , my teachers , oh wait .
Speaker 1Did you guys find any of the teachers like role models , like you like ? Oh , you talk to them , or at least like about advice or something .
Speaker 2No .
Speaker 3You ever had a crush on a teacher ?
Speaker 2You ever had a crush on a teacher . Yes , about two or three of them .
Speaker 4One in elementary , that's a lot .
Speaker 2One in elementary and probably , like two of them , in high school .
Speaker 4Okay . I had one in high school . He was like the Spanish teacher , I think .
Speaker 1I know what you're talking about Because I think he asked me . He was like , you know , because he asked me , because I was like , I think , a couple of my , okay , no .
Speaker 1Anyway , I think , because I think he asked me , I like so I think I was a freshman and he was like oh , um , what's your last name ? And I said it . But I was like , but I go by another last name , because he was like you look just like someone I know . And then he , I was like , oh , I have a theater , that's what they kind of look like , but I don't think . And then um , they're , oh , yeah , that is her . I was like I know her . She took my class a couple um times . How's she been ? I'm like we're in middle class what about you ?
Speaker 2do you have any first teachers ?
Speaker 1fuck , no , no I don't believe you , I feel like we all had a teacher , at least a little bit like damn , you know my kids principal teacher is hot now
Speaker 3yeah lupa's gonna say , I'm gonna go pick them up , I can go pick up your kids and what about the question you asked first ?
Speaker 2do you think it's a good idea to date in high ?
Speaker 1school . Uh , do I think ? No , I didn't you didn't date in high school at all well , I did my freshman year and then after that was like I got too much going on , too much problems at home , I want to be there . So I did a bunch of sports what about now ?
Speaker 2like how do you go ?
Speaker 1now , I mean it's different , different circumstances , different opportunities and shit .
Speaker 2So I feel like , if you , really , oh yeah , once you're grown up , you feel happy in school . You , you find a lot of people , a lot of different people yeah , oh , joshua came to podcast .
Speaker 1He came to say what up , josh , you want to hop on the podcast ?
Speaker 2What up ?
Speaker 1He's currently in high school . You can sit down next to us .
Speaker 3I'm going to shoot .
Speaker 1But yeah , I think it's cool to date in high school for separate opportunities . For some other people , I feel like for me it would have been a distraction .
Speaker 2It is a big distraction . And it sidetracks you a lot it does . You're worried about Valentine birthdays . Christmases , you know all that stuff .
Speaker 1I mean , have you , ever since you've been with Tiffany , have you ever like forgot it was like an anniversary ?
Speaker 2We're not married . Yeah , I forgot , I forget .
Speaker 1No , not like .
Speaker 2No , I know , the month is around October , but the day , all the days , they all kind of mushed into one . So you know , you get me All these years , you don't remember what day you did this ? What day ?
Speaker 4It's all like , it's just like . You just forget .
Speaker 1I know it was .
Speaker 2October . Yes , Around Halloween time .
Speaker 4You think it's a good idea to date .
Speaker 2No , wait , wait , hold up , I'm not done , not done . Why would you get mad if , like your boyfriend , forgot when you guys got together ?
Speaker 1no , because I don't even remember .
Speaker 2Oh , okay , how about you guys ? No , it's just then . In that case , how I feel like that's not serious for you .
Speaker 4There are , you doesn't say do you care ?
Speaker 1then you're not taking it as serious no , no I do take it serious , but I think it's just because , um , since we both don't remember , because it just happened so quick , so we're just like , well , I don't think it matters .
Speaker 2Me personally . I don't think it matters . It doesn't matter . There's a lot of people who do yeah .
Speaker 1People are tedious about stuff like that . What about you ? What ?
Speaker 2about you , Valerie .
Speaker 1Wait , I need my batteries .
Speaker 3Wait .
Speaker 1With money wait like .
Speaker 3If he forgets , then oh like , and then he like you know , you guys can't remember the day that you guys like at least something special spark in this .
Speaker 1No , I remember , I I personally think I remember everything that happened that day and all that stuff . But a date is not like a thing . I memorize it's just some .
Speaker 4Well , yeah , like not a day . There's people who'd be like oh well , I just keep up with all these things that you don't keep up with . You know how people be like oh , the small things do matter . And other people be like the small things don't know the small thing .
Speaker 2I think that's what I'm saying .
Speaker 4So , like for somebody , like to us , it would it could probably mean nothing to just remember the day . As long as you know other days are more special . But to that person it could be like , no , like , if you can't even remember that one day to me is so special , like , do you even love me ?
Speaker 2it's just like , after how many years do you think it's fine to send it for you ?
Speaker 4the day you got together or anniversary I mean , I think a lot of people do it every month , every people . The other people do it every year yeah , well , I feel that when you're very excited , you do like like puppy love is always like that for real yeah like you get so excited and be like oh my god . Like no but we've been together for 30 days , 40 weeks .
Speaker 2No , that's only some people . There's been girls that are like that , though .
Speaker 1Imagine being with a girl . Who's so in ?
Speaker 4love with you like that , though , and then you don't give her the same energy . Her energy would feel so like unloved , because the way she's showing love is not . She feels like she's giving more .
Speaker 1Yeah , because she's like I'm just it's not reciprocated .
Relationship Dynamics and Expectations
Speaker 4Your birthday . I go all out Anniversaries like any time , like whatever , and then you're just like it's not that serious .
Speaker 2Well , I mean , as long as I mean , yeah , you're right , you're pretty right , but I mean some people , you're probably right , there's other people who are like you too .
Speaker 4Like , honestly , I'm kind of like that , like I don't really like a lot of .
Speaker 2Yeah , I didn't remember a lot of situations . Yeah , I remember a lot of days and no , but as long as as they know that you appreciate them , I think it's fine .
Speaker 4But yeah , but do something for them , like once a year , you know , like whatever , because some people you could just be like here's a hundred dollars and here's a big ass teddy bear and they're like okay , but you were at work for eight hours and I wanted us to be together , right like as long as yeah , yeah , so like say , if a day didn't matter , but they still gave you that option to be like , okay , I don't know those days , but we can make a day to where it's like you're going with the idea like , okay , days don't have to matter , but we can make up the time that what ?
Speaker 1basically a love language , because some people don't like reciprocate , the same .
Speaker 2Yeah , some people don't communicate by .
Speaker 4Yeah , some people think something materialistic is gonna make up for the lost time and other people are like no , you gotta like , take me out and communicate like we have to have like a special yeah , to bond like yeah , like you know , like I think , like , where couples like where there's a person , like a woman that does something for her husband .
Speaker 3I can't wait for them to like get home and they still like in the office , and like in the office and like . They end up , like you know .
Speaker 2You mean , like everyone has to put a part of like their part , add to it 50-50 . Yeah , but yeah , that's the way it's supposed to be .
Speaker 4And honestly I feel like a lot of people don't think 50-50 .
Speaker 1Like people think like be like 50 . It don't have to be 50 50 because some people can't uphold their part a long time , but it's like when you're consistently doing it , then that's like a problem yeah , yeah , that's true too , that's true because some people could be given like on one , one anniversary , one year , but at least not all the time , yeah , but
Speaker 4once you're going every year where you forget every anniversary or like like , let's say , for your anniversary , she and you tell her like oh , I love the playstation 4 . And she's like , oh , yeah , okay . And then on that day she goes and gets that for you . But she's been telling you for the longest something . And then you just be like oh fuck , I forgot . But let's go eat .
Speaker 4And you're just like she's just looking at you like oh , but you forgot I mean 50 , 50 , and that situation could have been him taking her out to eat , giving her a box of chocolate yeah flowers and just making her feel like or just try to make the best of it that
Speaker 3could have just been so , because sometimes guys can , but just being like just being , like oh , I'm tired .
Speaker 4Or like oh , like you know what . Like no , because I don't have the money for that . Or like just little , like that's just like well , I know , like just to go out somewhere't have the money for it , like if my girl's going all out on one thing that I want , even if it's something materialistic , like let me make her day really special , you know , Because I don't have to make up for it 50-50 with buying her another gift . That costs $500 , too , you know .
Speaker 2Yeah , that's true .
Speaker 1How do you feel about it ? No , I think yeah , I feel like it works , depending the relationship , because some people I don't know some people just optimize the depending on the situation . They optimize what things they have in common and what people have their strengths in , because sometimes you lack something , but they have it like they understand that better than you do . So you guys work hand-in-hand together to figure out that situation , that's true .
Speaker 2How old are you ?
Speaker 120 , 21 , yeah , yep , how long for you , things for you .
Speaker 2So down , I'm not , I'm never settling .
Speaker 1No , you're never no , what depends what you like ?
Speaker 2you never know what was gonna come your way . You know what that's when you least expect it .
Speaker 4I was you like . I was the one who was never gonna have kids . I was never gonna have none of that . And then look at me now .
Speaker 1I don't but I don't consider having kids settling . I think settling is when you get too comfortable and yeah , you know , not even living together . It's that the fact that you're getting too comfortable where you guys are . You guys stop doing the things you guys used to do in the beginning . Like you stop going on dates . Yeah , you stop doing the things you like doing . Yeah , basically just stop your whole everything . Like stop hanging out with friends , stop doing things you like doing
Balancing Relationships and Career Goals
Speaker 1. Like , say , if I started going with someone and I just start changing myself Basically , like stop doing art , stop doing tattoos .
Speaker 2And I art stop doing tattoos and I just basically just had kids and stayed at home , but I could still do tattoos if I wanted to . Yeah , can you check on the kids please ?
Speaker 1yeah , you can , just this one I don't think what's the name of that , okay , oh , but yeah , basically that like if I just that's considered settling for me , like basically stopping my whole world and all like the things I love doing outside of the relationship , that's me settling now believe what you're doing , though you're better now , I think , if somebody loves you , though they will never ask you to do some .
Speaker 4Stop doing something you love to do not yet .
Speaker 1I'm gonna wait for you to say something first okay , so what if that , the thing that had a passion for and it wasn't like working say , it's been like five years and you're like , okay , you need to like figure out how are you going to go about that ? Like , damn , you need to figure something else out . Like this ain't going to go for you , like you just know that they're not any good , but this is what they love doing . You're like you got to tell them , like this ain't going to be a career , but you got to do something else , Like if your person is not moving forward with his passion that he has .
Speaker 1Yeah .
Speaker 4I mean , I think it would be a time for you to be like , look , we needed to sit down and talk and then , like the most loving way , just be like look , man , this shit ain't working out like we need something that's gonna help us , like you know , but I mean don't say it exactly in those words sorry so you think , just saying it nicely , or like you're just gonna be like I think that if you love your person and your person loves you , your person won't take anything you say like in a way where you're like like being offensive or like being mean , like I think if they love you and they see that the financial situation is not getting better or something , I think they will understand that you put up or you're not put up , but like you try and you know wait or try as long as you could , and if things are not working out , then it's time to move over .
Speaker 4You know yeah because , I mean , if you and him are already having financial problems and and you're telling him like look , you know , let's try this for a little bit longer , and , you know , nothing happens out of it , then maybe it's time for us to really like move forward , you know yeah , and then a couple months go by , or even if the situation situation is worse , then him as your person . He shouldn't want to see you struggle . He should want to be like you know what . This is just not working out .
Speaker 1Let's do something else , because I don't want you to feel like you're the one as a single woman that's ever seen it yeah , I mean , I remember , I remember there's this I seen I don't remember if it was like on the YouTube or like a Netflix series , but basically there was like oh , I think they have kids in their life . Okay , so you go to school for a year or you get the degree and I'll stay at home , and they switched while he worked for a little bit , but he did like a part-time , I don't think people should do that . You don't think .
Speaker 4No , you don't think no , because people change every day .
Speaker 4Like you can wake up today and love this person and wake up the next day and not love that person and like vice versa . Like imagine you're staying at home taking care of your children and the reason I say this is because , like I've seen it a lot , you know , throughout the years , a lot of my friends like two of them actually where they went and like they went to school and then they had kids with somebody and they didn't go to college for that person . Or the girl went to college and the guy kind of stayed home and was like working , like heavy duty jobs and like making like that income . And then when she got close to finishing and she got her like little nursing thing going , her little gig , and she started making like so much money 25 , 30 an hour it was like , oh well , you know , like you're making money , I you have to work all these hours and you're not paying attention to me , so I cheated on you or type shit , you know . And then or vice the other way around .
Speaker 4You know , now you're stuck with no career , a child , no credit , no oh , basically everything changes , so yeah I think if you guys love each other , I think you guys would basically be like look , let's both go to school , but also let's rotate our times where , like you get , you get um , a 40-hour shift and you get a 20-hour shift one weekend , and I get another 20-hour shift the next week and you get a 40-hour yeah you know what I'm saying like so nobody's getting more than the other one .
Speaker 4Because , like that , if you guys were to go each other's separate ways , at least you guys have something to show for , and that look like at least we work together and I was able to get this and he was able to get that . And like you know , because imagine , like , if he's the one doing everything for you and then one day you just get tired of the situation you're in with him and then you leave him or he leaves you , and then you're like stuck with all the bills on your own and like struggling even more now because you don't have nobody to help you with a child or whatever it is you you know .
Speaker 1So what makes you think Okay , so what are the top three things you guys believe that makes relationships like go
Navigating Relationships and Parenthood
Speaker 1downhill ? Like when do you start seeing that ? Like what's the three things that lead to it ? For ?
Speaker 3sure lack of sex .
Speaker 2Yes , lack of sex , Having children too young , I think .
Speaker 4Yeah , having children too young is definitely a good one . I think that one .
Speaker 2Having kids too young ? I think , yeah , having children too young is definitely a good one .
Speaker 4I'm having kids too young and having children with multiple people also , just because imagine having kids what was ?
Speaker 1it what are like the . What was the last one you said ?
Speaker 2having kids , having kids with , okay , okay yeah , having kids with multiple people , that messes things up yes , because you know like co-parenting is not easy , so imagine having to do it with a parent , oh like if you got with someone else and they had kids and then they all come together , yeah , and I'm like when you have kids .
Speaker 4You always have to take your kids's feelings into like consideration first yeah , yeah , yeah , like , and that's hard too , because , like sometimes , like your kids don't understand a lot , and sometimes but it's not about that , because your kids come first , even at the but in a lot of situations us parents get with people who don't have children , so they don't understand a lot of the stuff we do . I've seen like and then they feel like we're not understanding them . But then to us it's like the other way around you know ?
Speaker 2Yeah , that's how it is .
Speaker 4Because there's a lot of people who get in relationships with people and they're like , oh , why is they're paying so much attention to that woman ? Yeah , baby daddy and it's like no , it's because the kid or whatever you know . But people like , oh , I can handle it , but like no , you can't . If you can't handle a girl's past when you get with her , what makes you think you'll handle her a whole baby daddy ? And like , yeah , you know what about you ?
Speaker 2what do you think makes a relationship work ? What are the three top things ? That makes a relationship work work uh communication yeah , that's , that's , that's a good one .
Speaker 1That's definitely communication , yeah , and reinsurance what do you mean ? Basically because the other person can be lacking , like most of the time . A lot of females need reinsurance , knowing that you're gonna be there okay , yeah and some guys just be clueless and just be like , oh she knows , they don't know .
Speaker 2And then men , just can't read our minds basically . That's why you have to go into a relationship knowing what you're getting into .
Speaker 1You know the person and then I say knowing , and I feel like this is always . Should we keep in mind that you should love yourself more to be able to be capable of leaving . You have to love yourself .
Speaker 2But it's hard when you have kids . I mean , you're there for yourself , but you have to be very good for kids more not just that .
Speaker 1When you're in a relationship , I feel like that shows more of who you are as a person too , because you're gonna be conflicting .
Speaker 1It's more like it's not even about like , it's more of like a debate sometimes yeah , that's how it feels for but it's like more of the debate about like you're , you're revealing a lot of yourself within them because you guys self-reflect a lot . So if you see something wrong , but sometimes it's like me self-reflecting , like oh , I'm seeing this wrong with me , so like I try to pin it on them and regardless of what they're doing .
Speaker 2Yeah , I know what you mean . I've gone through something like that .
Speaker 1It's hard , it's hard , but so you guys think it's easier to be single I ?
Speaker 2mean , don't get me wrong . Well , I mean , at some point you're going to have like to get yourself together , it's fun for a while , and settle down with somebody .
Speaker 3But I think that first people are like People these days , just date , just to date , like , just for , like For sex ? Well , that too , but like more for , also like , for also more for like social media .
Speaker 2Yeah , that's why I don't have no social media . Dude , you don't know what's out there .
Speaker 1You don't know what's out there .
Speaker 3I think like before . Like you know , when you meet a person , you have to know that person before moving on .
Speaker 2Have you ever met a person and just like got with them quick , like let's try this ?
Speaker 4Yes , how did it work out ?
Speaker 3I mean you know , it was my life One , two three , four , five , six . Come over here accounting .
Speaker 2Accounting numbers lie One two , three , four , five , six , seven , eight , nine ten .
Speaker 1I know this is a podcast . Abby'll be coming so we can interview you . Go sit next to your cousin . Oh yeah , sit down here so you can hop on the podcast here okay , so this is ivy , you guys , and say hi first day of school was a couple weeks ago . First day of first grade . Just talk in the mic it hears you um , ivy .
Speaker 4Let them know how your first day of school was . Good , okay , but did you make any friends ? What's your teacher's name ? My ?
Speaker 1teacher's name is you guys speak up , girl . You know , you got that voice , you're not nervous . You got any friends , girl ?
Speaker 4yes , what's her name ? What's your friend's name ?
Speaker 1I forgot oh , so they must really not be your friend I've been doing how to spell your name ivy boy , how old are you ?
Speaker 4six ivy . What's the president's name ?
Speaker 3I don't know . Do you know how to count to 100 ?
Speaker 1Ivy who created tacos .
Speaker 3Who did create tacos ? Who made tacos ? The taco people .
Speaker 1The taco people apparently made tacos yeah .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1And I gotta see , I can't even see that far , but , um , we're about to , we're gonna ask one more question and then we're gonna , um , yeah , wrap it up well , I got a question okay there's a question .
Speaker 3I see a lot of what's it called , it's you're Mexican but you don't like what .
Speaker 2You don't like what .
Speaker 1So you're Mexican , but you don't like what ? What you don't ?
