I want to start by grounding us in the reality of child sexual abuse, because a lot of us grow up thinking, “that wouldn’t happen in my family” or “I’d see the signs.” But the statistics tell a different story. Abuse is more common than we’re comfortable admitting, and in most cases, it’s not a stranger—it’s someone the child already knows and trusts.

That can feel unsettling to hear, but the goal here isn’t to create fear—it’s to create awareness. Because the more we understand what’s actually happening, the more we can do to prevent it.

One of the biggest gaps I see is in parent education. Most parents deeply want to protect their kids, but noone wants to learn the tools on how to talk about it.

That’s where prevention education classes come in. These are designed to give parents real, practical tools—like how to talk to your kids about body safety in a way that’s age-appropriate, how to teach boundaries without making it scary, and how to recognize potential red flags in adults or situations.

Something I really want to emphasize is shifting from a reactive mindset to a proactive one. Instead of only thinking about “what would I do if something happened,” we can start asking, “what can I do now to lower the risk and build trust with my child?”

And a big part of that is communication. Creating an environment where your child feels safe telling you anything—without fear, shame, or getting in trouble—is one of the strongest protective factors there is.

I know this topic can feel overwhelming, but this isn’t about being a perfect parent. It’s about being an informed one. Small, consistent conversations and a little more awareness can go a long way in keeping kids safer.
