SSP 43 - Brian D: From Prison Yards to 25 Years of Freedom

Background & Athletic Career:

  • Born in upstate New York to decorated war hero family with loving upbringing
  • Moved to California in 4th grade; first drink at age 11-12 (stole six-pack from Alpha Beta)
  • Excelled in soccer from youth through semi-pro level (California Emperors, San Diego Soccer)
  • Kicked field goals with San Diego Chargers at Candlestick Park
  • Parents divorced; moved to Puerto Rico after 8th grade, returned to California in 1986
  • Found methamphetamine in high school; addiction progressively destroyed athletic career

Rock Bottom & Incarceration:

  • Daughter Brianna was born October 20, 1990 - asked to leave hospital for drinking during birth
  • Escalated to breaking & entering, theft, multiple arrests in three countries
  • Served eight years in and out of prison while daughter grew up without him
  • H&I volunteers came to his cell; one said: "I get to do something you don't—I get to leave"
  • That moment planted the seed for recovery

Recovery & Transformation:

  • Released and entered Cooper Fellowship recovery house on October 24, 2000
  • Found the same H&I volunteer who spoke to him in prison—asked him to be his sponsor (Plumber Jim)
  • Emotional reunion with daughter at recovery house: "You're my daddy"
  • 25+ years of continuous sobriety; never relapsed
  • Rebuilt all family relationships; father to two sons who've never seen him loaded
  • Runs successful handyman business; actively sponsors others
  • In loving relationship with Kris (nearly 8 years sober)
  • Lives by the principle: "I didn't get sober to be miserable—today I get to make those days count.
