Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, to another podcast of the Jag Bros. This is Joey with my two older brothers, Jack and JT. We are starting to get into the swing of things of this Jag's new season. 2026-2027 coming. We had our first podcast in a while last week where we broke down kind of training camp. And now we're going to talk about the Saints game and uh going into the Panthers preseason and also what we've kind of seen so far and what we think this new season is going to lead into for the Jags. We are so excited. What were your thoughts on Saturday's game against the Saints?
SPEAKER_00Good to have Jags football. None of the starters played, unfortunately, but uh the first half was ugly. But we've got Jaguars football. It's fun to be with you guys and to talk Jags ball and to hang out with Jags fans through the comments. So still high level of excitement. But as Liam Cohen has said, pretty much every press conference, a lot to clean up and Jags are making moves. In fact, just less than an hour ago, the Jaguars made a trade. Things are happening.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we'll talk more about the trade in the game, but it was one of those things, the first 30 seconds, you're like, yes, Jag football is back, and then all of a sudden, like, oh, none of the players are playing. I barely recognize the game. Give up an 80 yards return. Exactly. It was about the worst start you could go. You give up an 80-yard return, a walk-in touchdown with three guys missing tackles, and then an offensive lineman goes down on the first play of the offense. But um, they did show heart, they did show uh gut. It doesn't matter for us that they won their preseason game, but it matters for the players that played in the second half to respond to their coaches, uh, to to show heart to care. So it was it was nice.
SPEAKER_01I have a hot take. I would have rather lost the game because I I don't know what it is about the Jaguars. It seems when we win preseason games, the regular season isn't as good. I don't know if they get, oh, we're actually a little bit better than we thought we were, versus when they lose their games, they maybe they're like, oh, maybe we're not as good, and they try harder. I don't know. I kind of would have liked a little bit of a adversity, uh, kind of like when we lost to Houston and then all of a sudden it woke everyone up and we went on an eight-game win streak. I just hope that they don't get too uh high of a head because it was a bad performance, and there is a glaring issue at backup quarterback. I know it's backup quarterback, and if Trevor goes out, the season's over, but that's not exactly true. Because what's if Trevor goes down for like three weeks, and those three games you need to win one maybe to make the playoffs. Nick Mullins ain't gonna cut it. He's not gonna win you a single game. So, Joey, are you saying that there's no Nathan Rourke on this team? There's not. There's no Nathan Rourke. There's there's not even a CJ Bethard on this team, I feel like. It's it's really bad behind Trevor. And hopefully, maybe when people start cutting players, we go pick someone up. But go get you a Gardner Minshew or the the Broncos have three quarterbacks. The Sam Ellinger from the who used to be the UT, he played quite well in a preseason last year. You you need to go get someone that can possibly win you one game out of three. And right now, we don't have anything on our roster that could possibly win us a game.
SPEAKER_02For for a long time, Jag Bros listeners, you will remember in 2023 when Nathan Rourke was on our team. Joey spent, I don't know, maybe 10-15 minutes in one of the podcasts raving about how great of a player Nathan was going to compete versus the fact that that he should be competing for a starting position. The rest of the NFL didn't agree. He is in the CFL. But Joey, you you hey hey, how often does he keep winning the CFL?
SPEAKER_00And to be fair, that highlight gets played every preseason on NFL's uh Instagram.
SPEAKER_02Yes, he was a CFL RL star. He was a CFL's most outstanding player in 2025, and he's the most outstanding Canadian award winner, too. So he has won, he he set the record for CFL for most completion percentages. So, Joey, your eye for the quarterback is correct. I I I am disappointed he never got his chance to play in the NFL, but he's playing in British Columbia, he's from British Columbia, so I think he's just a Canadian guy. But boy, he could he could play. It would have been fun to see what he could have done in the NFL.
SPEAKER_00Well, I will say as we're talking about this game, and we can kind of start in the bad and then work our way to the good. The whole second to third string offense was just tough to watch. So Mullins obviously did not play well, he was not accurate, which typically that's kind of his only wheelhouse with not a super strong arm. He also didn't have anybody open, nobody was getting open, and DJ Dallas looked rough. The offensive line had some injuries and weren't having the best game. It just was a bad performance all around. I mean, you talk about scoring only six points where one of those drives starts inside Saints' 10-yard line after that fumble recovery. You move backwards and get a field goal. I mean, I guess that's one of the good things is Cam Little looked phenomenal, but just the offense as a whole in that first half was brutal to watch. A lot of three and outs. It does make you at least have a little hesitation on depth across the board because it it was not a pretty first half for the Jacks.
SPEAKER_01I will say it that it was more almost third stringers playing. Some of the second stringers, like Mylum and uh some of the other guys, were out like really quick, especially after Chuma went down. They were like, hey, we're we don't want to risk any of these players. So you're looking at like Ricky Lee, who's not gonna make the team, he was awful, uh, and a bunch of other people that just aren't gonna make the team. It was sad to kind of see how really bad they were, and it just made me question are we that good at seeing talent? If this is the type of depth that they thought was okay enough to not do any sort of moves in the free agency. These depth players are atrocious, like doesn't even belong on a college football field, and I just get scared a little bit of how well we are at seeing talent when we're constantly not going and getting players, and then we oh, hey, yeah, we did sign someone, but he's been on three different teams practice squads, you never heard of them, and oh, by the way, he sucks.
SPEAKER_00Uh, I don't know. I I get the criticism. Uh, to me, Gladstone has been the definition of hot and cold. Some moves I loved. You mentioned Pregnant. I think that is gonna look like an amazing pick in the third round, and then he's had some moves I don't love. But I will uh say in the new regime, Joey, you talked about maybe a hot take that the Jags lose this preseason game would have been better because they wouldn't be as confident. Everything I've seen the last couple days is the Jaguars were not happy with the performance and grateful that it's preseason, grateful that it's week one. That's why Cohen wants to have the starters out there because he's like, man, the chemistry is not where I want it to be. He wants this team to perform better. He's not happy with what's on the field. That's why Gladstone goes out and makes a trade. Yeah, partly some injuries too, but I think I think they realize, hey, we love what we see in some areas, but there's still some holes. Now, could it be too late, especially the linebacker room, which we can talk about in a minute, too? Potentially, but they're at least making moves instead of the old regime of just sitting on the hands saying, ah, it's just preseason. It doesn't matter. It does matter. Like this is your chance to get right before the season.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, they make that move because uh Patrick McCary, if y'all didn't see, had surgery on his back, and they're questioning season ending IR. They haven't made that decision yet, but sounds like we're not seeing him until at least towards the end of the season. So, yeah, you go out and you practically find another McCarey who comes from the Ravens, big guard. Yeah, he's huge. Uh 6'8. 6'8 370. Uh Goliath. Obviously, we're moving way far away from the old Doug Peterson of uh get a light moving guard. We are going for the heavy power, uh, but put him in pregnant massive guards.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so that's Daniel Falele, who we traded for. Again, we don't have the pick the or the exact pick. The language right now is a late day three pick. So you're probably thinking sixth round or maybe a seventh round pick here. And he's 6'8, 370, as you just said, Joey. And he's started the last two seasons, uh, all 17 games for the Ravens. So probably gonna get some starts. It's gonna be interesting how the offensive line room works out once you hopefully get everyone back and healthy on paper, not knowing a ton. You get a starter from a playoff team, uh a massive guy that's gonna move the pile. Looks like a potential again. I feel like last time he's either got great moves or you're like, uh, I don't know about that. This looks like uh a good trade for the Jags.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Joey and I were talking about this the other day, is it felt like the the when Gladstone came in, he just pretty much did everything the Jags fans wanted that first offseason, trying to endear himself to the fans. And quite frankly, a lot of it worked. It was great, it was fun, everybody loved him. A lot of the moves worked, and then since then, we've seen him really take on more and more of it potentially his own identity. And so these these moves are increasingly head scratching. I mean, we we we ran this point into the ground, but letting Devin Lloyd go for basically pennies is brutal when that is continues to be the glaring hole on this team is in the linebacking room, especially uh the athletic linebacker that's able to cover, able to play both pass and run defense, which Devin Lloyd was able to do. Even even the fact that like like we praised him on getting rid of Campbell, but then the fact that we somehow still had Newsom cap hit and Campbell's cap hit, it's like okay, what did we exactly get get give up? Uh like what did we exactly get? Because Newsom was not great at all last year.
SPEAKER_00Um Browns fans are loving Campbell right now. I've been listening to some of their content, so great.
SPEAKER_02So, yeah, it's like it was like, okay, well, we're still paying for Campbell, then why not just keep him at that point?
SPEAKER_01I I think it was really uh like when they talked about it, it was scheme. Campbell is more of a man, and we played more of a zone, and I think just Newsom didn't quite work out as much as they wanted him to work out. I don't hate that one. It is kind of a wash, a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Uh it ended up well, if we had if we had extra money, we could have paid Devin Lloyd. Like, like if you're taking it.
SPEAKER_00No, I I I I I know, but Joey's right on scheme. It was a big scheme move and looked good, but it definitely didn't work out. I think that's the point. Is it pad moves that look good and and fall flat again? It's way, way, way, way too early on the Travis Hunter conversation, but you sold the farm to move up three spots to go get Travis Hunter. For a couple of things. As of now you're losing that cornerback.
SPEAKER_01A cornerbackslash uh wide receiver.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that's Agnew.
SPEAKER_01Javal, if he's gonna be five, it's not Agnew. Agnew never played corner, and if you have AJ Boye, the season that he had when he was with the Jags, and then you also have Agnew, yeah, I'd get that.
SPEAKER_00Like Yeah, it was about drives.
SPEAKER_01And he's not Agnew, like the way that he can change the game with just having the ball in his hand, throw him a screen and make people miss and possibly take one to the house. I I I totally disagree with you on that. Like, if you want to question his decisions, question Diomi Brown 10 million on one-year deal and then never really playing, question not signing Devin Lloyd, question we've signed three linebackers since then, and they're all from page eight, and no one's ever heard of them. We're going in the lost and found box, and it's like, oh, you've never played football before. Maybe you can play. Like you have Bobby O'Rourke, you have actual Bobby Wagner. People you don't they may not start, but at least get veteran death to help out your undrafted free agent and combs, and you're also trying to make Jack Kaiser something who absolutely looks garbage, but go get like a Bobby Wagner that can teach them something. I don't understand this idea of oh, also let's let two undrafted free agents be our third rush. Why do we hate veteran advice? And okay, maybe they won't start, but they can still help the team. We're so trapped, and like we have to be young, we have to have our own players. It's okay to get a veteran that is just a rotational guy, but who can also help your young players.
SPEAKER_00That is, well, I mean, to be fair, you do have foyer, you do have your two edge players have been on the team five, six years. You're talking about depth pieces, which there's just different philosophies.
SPEAKER_01But those guys are playing and they need to focus on. I'm talking about a rotational guy like Smoot or whatever, who's been in the game and maybe isn't playing, but hey, can come around, be like, hey, I saw this or whatever. And then also, if you're in a huge situation, I'm gonna trust a veteran on a third and one, then maybe an undrafted rookie who hey, just Danny Straight gal, that touchdown that he gave up because he didn't set the edge. That's a veteran move to set the edge, and you don't just rush in there.
SPEAKER_02So to Joey's point, it is frustrating that year after year, it doesn't matter who's in charge, we we don't want to draft the clowny, or we don't want to draft, we don't want to pick up in the free agency the the Janavian clowney. We don't want to we haven't really picked up a veteran guy on Melus or anyone, yes, exactly, since Calais Campbell. And I'm not even saying go in the biggest the the sweet stapes to to win uh Miles Garrett, but go go go and get the guy.
SPEAKER_01Joey Bosa is still out there. There's still yeah, a Leonard Floyd, uh Kyle Van Noy, who uh keeps doing it every year. Like, go get yourself one of those guys, they're not gonna be expensive. If you if you miss, you miss. I didn't hate swinging on Ogba. Yes, it didn't work out, but keep trying.
SPEAKER_02Don't quit. No, it's gonna be interesting. And and to Jack's point, we'll get to see a lot of the starters in the in the in preseason two. And historically, Jacksonville has played their their starters a little bit more frequently. I even think we thought they weren't gonna show up in in week three, but we saw them some in week three, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see them a little bit more the following week as well, because there is that weird almost week and a half off in between the third preseason game and the the week one of the NFL season.
SPEAKER_01I actually just thought of something crazy.
SPEAKER_02Hit us.
SPEAKER_01A majority of our defense is either undrafted or a really late pick. Monteric Brown's seventh round pick, Antonio Johnson sixth round pick.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then you have BJ Green undrafted, Danny Strago undrafted, Franson Combs undrafted, uh, Eric Murray, I think's fifth round pick.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I mean you also have a ton of top end talent, too. Well, I'm a three-point. Two top ten picks. You have two number one overall picks.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I guess you have three of those guys, but and two of them weren't even their draft picks, though.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's because they've decided to not draft defense in the first couple rounds. We continually take it. Yeah, he he spent his one first round pick and a double two first rounds and a second on on defense uh in one player.
SPEAKER_01Um that but that doesn't count, I don't think, because when they drafted him, they drafted him as a wide receiver. They're well then they they've already failed.
SPEAKER_02They've already failed because if you're drafting him, failed. You didn't draft, you don't draft, you don't spend two firsts and a second on on a on a guy who's gonna be even if it's a remote.
SPEAKER_01No idea that Parker Washington was going to be the guy that they had. They wanted Travis Hunter to be Parker Washington, which is fine. Guess what? You got a guy that is that without even having to make Travis Hunter that.
SPEAKER_02So now he's then you could have actually had somebody else. Well, you could have three extra like top-end talent players. We talk about our team being Jones.
SPEAKER_01I understand that. I understand that.
SPEAKER_02And oh by the way, when you pay Trevor what you pay, it makes you be even more important that you're drafting well because you've you're throwing away draft picks, you don't need the cap room.
SPEAKER_01Jaguars always cry, we never get the splashy guy. You finally go get the splashy guy. You way overpaid. No, we didn't. Come on. We absolutely overpaid.
SPEAKER_02We absolutely overpaid.
SPEAKER_00As of today, that is.
SPEAKER_02I love Travis Hunter. I love Travis Hunter. I think he's a great talent. A plus talent. I said he was an A plus player.
SPEAKER_00We need to get a player because he's only played half a season.
SPEAKER_01You cannot, you cannot do this.
SPEAKER_00Because, yes, to Joey's point, if Travis is a very good player.
SPEAKER_01What are you doing here?
SPEAKER_02So hold up, Joey. And Darrell Revis at his prime. Are you trading all time?
SPEAKER_00We have we literally have a one-to-one trade from last year. So we literally had a one-to-one trade last year where the Colts traded two first-round picks and A.D. Mitchell. Yes, his trade value went down significantly because he wasn't playing well, but was a second-round pick recently for a sauce gardener. So Travis Hunter has to play at an all-pro level or at cornerback and has the potential to still be a good wide receiver. He's going to play more snaps than we think. He's not going to play five or six snaps on offense. Every interview the coach says he's still the reason he's playing so much on defense is because he didn't play much on defense last year. And so he's getting up to speed to be CB1 and still play 10 to 15 snaps on offense.
SPEAKER_01No, yeah. They'll get him on offense. He'll have uh jet sweep screens and other things. Uh I mean I mean, look at him when he goes up for the ball in the Chiefs game and practice, like he's got that just innate. Go up and grab the ball. You you don't keep that off the field. And also, how many draft picks did we get for Jalen Ramsey? Oh, right, two first round picks. Like an all-star corner by himself is worth two first-round picks. So if he's just an all-star corner, you get it. But if you get an all-star corner and someone who gets you 400 yards uh on offense and three touchdowns, four touchdowns, and is an absolute game changer, then yeah, it's it's absolutely worth it. But this there are real things that James Gladstone has done that make no sense.
SPEAKER_00Not siding Devin Lloyd, not making it's it's sort of a big if on Travis Hunter. That is the point. No, obviously.
SPEAKER_02You're slating him as if he's already Sauce Gartner or better. And I and he may be. I'm not I'm not trying to say that, but he has not proven that yet. Number one. No, number two, there's a difference between a first-round pick and the top five and a first and an average first round pick. The only reason why this wasn't egregious was because the Jags made the playoffs and they were significantly better than initially projected in 2025 by most people, or else it would have been a horrible pick if you're essentially trading two top ten picks uh for him. Um, but you look time will tell. But but you want to know why?
SPEAKER_01Because you're I would I bet money if Travis Hunter doesn't get hurt, all of Parker Washington's stats would be Travis Hunter's stats.
SPEAKER_02I don't know about that.
SPEAKER_01I think he slated right into where Travis Hunter was supposed to be. Yes, and but and everyone raves about Parker Washington. I wholeheartedly believe if Travis Hunter was still healthy, that would be all of him. Do you now you see that you have someone who's just as good. Now you don't have to have it. It is now a luxury. Guess what? The Jags haven't had a luxury player, and uh Eagles always have one. Like the best team always have luxury players. Guess what? Jags finally have their own, and now it's an overspend, and well, we made a mistake.
SPEAKER_02Don't make that the Eagles the Eagles don't overspend. The Eagles continually get luxury players at the point of their uh where it falls to them crushing the draft. Correct. That they keep drafting uh best available player versus uh needs, and uh in their they're excellent at that was the best player in that draft.
SPEAKER_01I would rather have him than Mason Graham or any other garbage guy that has come out of that draft so far.
SPEAKER_00Uh again, I mean maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. I'm saying it's way too early to evaluate, but what I'm also saying is if Travis Hunter doesn't pan out in an all-pro level, which we've seen a ton, hey, Marvin Harrison Jr. was a generational talent. This was a can't miss. He was an absolute, this is gonna be a future Hall of Famer. There's real world where you're like, is he even gonna be on the field for the Cardinals? He looks terrible.
SPEAKER_02A drop machine that's certainly not their best player. He's not even the best wide receiver on on maybe the worst team in football.
SPEAKER_00So what I'm saying is if Travis Hunter does not pan out because we've seen flashes, but you look statistically, he did not he didn't flash.
SPEAKER_02Like he was also you forget, Joey, he actually. Had the Parker Washington position for those first several weeks. Correct. Do you want to know why he was benched? It's because he got a hundred different uh illegal motion in a uh penalties and and and hadn't quite learned the offense. Uh now maybe those are easy.
SPEAKER_01Tavs Hunter never got benched, by the way.
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean, he certainly got all was on the field a lot more earlier in the season than he was um by No, you mean when they just told him, hey, you're gonna be wide receiver one? Come on, well, no, when he was on there. Do you remember the game he was on there? He literally got seven uh illegal motion penalties, and they're like, all right, well, we need to like figure out how we can.
SPEAKER_01But that wasn't also Travis Hunter's that was multiple people would get were getting illegal motion penalties, and Liam Cohen came out and said five of them were part was was on Travis. Yes, he's learning two sides of the football on his rookie year. They were giving him way too much, and even Liam Cohen came out and said the offense was too sporadic, like it had way too much going on. He needed to simplify it. This is a brand new team. This is players that have never played that thing. You can't start adding straight multiple motions on your first year on your first team with players that have never seen your stuff. That was just a rookie mistake as a head coach, and he fixed it.
SPEAKER_00My point is, then we'll get to the preseason game for Friday. Obviously, you everyone's gonna want to watch Travis Hunter, and that's part of the reason we're debating it so much, is because all I'll say is if the move for Travis Hunter does not pan out, it's like drafting a quarterback that high. That's a fireable offense. GMs that make that big of a move, and if they don't pan out, that is a level of move that gets you fired.
SPEAKER_02So maybe I'm not ready to fire.
SPEAKER_01I want to I I wanna I want to pose a question real quick because it very much seems like James Gladstone is quite good at drafting late round picks. I think Tanner Kozdill's gonna be good. I think that they're uh Leon Quent Allen Jr., Mondheim, like he's hitting late. Yep. Would you keep him if he keeps hitting late, but he keeps missing in the early rounds?
SPEAKER_02Well, it's hard to say he's missing on the early rounds because he put all his eggs in this Travis Hunter basket. Right. And we just don't know.
SPEAKER_01Ransall, the other two Ransall Ransall, there's no spot for him right now, and I I haven't seen anything that is like I'm the whole year. Yeah. Well, I I understand, I understand, but what I'm saying is I don't think he's close to like pushing the starters.
SPEAKER_02Well, you just said he he drafted he drafted the greatest corner of all time, potentially in Travis Hunter, generational player, a generational player, like he has the potential to be the so if he's not that then you can your point is is moot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then he should be drafting. I'm talking about second, third, and like fourth round picks. Where you get the city. Fourth round picks are great. Tootin was awesome. We've loved Emmanuel Pregnon that we just talked about in the third round.
SPEAKER_01Pregnon has one preseason. Tutin has not flashed yet.
SPEAKER_02What about flashed yet? Tootin had was dominating the playoffs. He's like, he's like four handoffs.
SPEAKER_01I understand he looked good, but there's a chance that he comes out as wide uh running back one and does not perform. As you said, uh Travis Hunter flashed, he had over 100 yards against the Rams and touched down.
SPEAKER_00Like that was garbage time game. We were already down 20 points. I'm not saying it's not legit. Baychall Tootin balled out in a playoff game at home. Travis Hunter balled out in games that really, you know.
SPEAKER_02Tootin had almost 500 yards last year. Like, like I don't between catching it, between rushing and receiving.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was about to say there was no way close to rushing for 500 yards. But um almost 400 yards. Yeah, yeah, 300 yards rushing and and 80 yards receiving. You can't say he's flashed. Now he has the opportunity to flash, and if he plays well this year, then it's a good pick. Because Mylam could be a miss, Ransaw could be a miss, as you said, Travis Hunter could be a miss, and Putin could like all these people, if they don't perform well this year, could be massive misses. I'm saying if that pans out where you've missed all in the top uh in the early rounds, but let's say all your late rounds hit, let's say uh Tanner Cozio is a good uh tight end, let's say Zach Durfee does well at the edge, let's say LeQent Allen uh becomes a really good running back, seventh round Mondheim is right there, about to become possibly a starter. Like, say that happens where you're getting starters and production out of your late round, but you're not getting it out of your early round. Do you keep him?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, of course. Like, I mean, again, I'm frustrated with him. But it's not it's not firable. Like, even if Travis Hunter is a fine player, that's not firable. Like, uh like I I I look, I'm frustrated that there's not a sense of urgency with this team. I'm frustrated that in the offseason we aren't doing going all out in either one of these years to truly be a Super Bowl contender with our actions. We could still be a Super Bowl contender with this roster. I'm not saying that, but but the there's a level of urgency that I think our front office is not showing. But like you look at the Rams, they're going out and signing Miles uh Garrett. You look at like some of the other things.
SPEAKER_01You don't typically traded for him. I had a question.
SPEAKER_02Fine, fine, but wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
SPEAKER_01I do have a question. You bring up the Rams. Have the Rams ever really signed a huge free agent, or is all their big moves trades? Because I have a feeling that Gladstone might be the same. Like his big moves are trades and free agency, he doesn't move.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they traded for the Chiefs. I mean, the Rams are stacked. That's a good point. No, I know they they traded for Garrett, they traded for Stafford. Yes, they had a string of a long time where they did not have a first-round pick. And obviously the Jags did not trade or did not pick in the first round pick for the first time in Jaguars franchise history. So it is a new school of thought. And I'm not saying we're gonna move off the 2027 first-round pick, but it's a good point. No, no, no.
SPEAKER_02But Devontae Adams, we may need to change the way we see free agency.
SPEAKER_01If if he doesn't see the free agency as a possible way to get better, then I guess we just got to keep looking at trades that hopefully we have enough extra players that we can trade for a game changer like Garrett, Stafford, Ramsey.
SPEAKER_02Devontae Adams, who led the NFL, I think, in receiving touchdowns last year with 14, uh, he was a free agency. Yeah, but he's not right as he had 14.
SPEAKER_01That I don't think they ever signed him thinking he's gonna be wide receiver one.
SPEAKER_02It was more of a He wasn't a wide receiver one on their team. Yeah, he was wide receiver two on their team. He just like Reddit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they didn't make him a game changer. They don't make splashy moves in the free agency.
SPEAKER_00Well, speaking of Rams, let's do this as we kind of wrap up. Let's do what is your ceiling for the Jags this season? Everything goes right, best case scenario. What's your floor? And let's do floor, assuming Trevor stays healthy most of the year. Like what is if Trevor's out all year, it's gonna be a disaster. Joey, you already hit on that. The backup quarterback is not pretty. What's the floor if Trevor stays healthy most of the year? And then what's your actual expectation prediction for the Jags record?
SPEAKER_01I give the ceiling is AFC championship. I think realistic is a uh getting to the playoffs and getting one win. And floor is this is like if you don't make the playoffs, it's a disappointing uh season. Their floor is just not making the playoffs. Like what would you say win total?
SPEAKER_00Put win totals to that too.
SPEAKER_01AFC championship and playoffs, I see them at around 11 wins. It's just a harsh schedule, honestly. I uh uh and we don't have as many home games and everything. Uh I think the way it plays out, you're looking at possibly 11 wins and the lowest right around eight where you were close to the playoffs, but you just missed it.
SPEAKER_02So I I I'd say I I'm I'm pretty similar. Look, like this team, especially offensively, has the ability to to compete for a Super Bowl. Trevor Lawrence feels like a Super Bowl S quarterback. Liam Cohen feels like a Super Bowl S coach. Uh, we have pieces and players on defense that, hey, if Travis Hunter is that elite all-pro level guy in the secondary, and if you actually have Walker and Heinz Allen being what they can be as two top ten sack guys uh on the on the defensive line, yeah, there's no reason why Jacksonville should not be competing for the AFC. We also get the AFC North, which honestly, with with new coaches in Baltimore and Pittsburgh, I think there's a good chance both those teams take major steps back. Uh, and so you're looking at the Browns with a new coach, the Ravens with a new coach, and the Steelers with a new coach on your schedule. I think those become a little bit easier of wins, whereas I think the Bengals will be tough. You could easily have a top three, top five offense. Uh, and your best case scenario is probably a mid top 12-ish to 15 defense that that's opportunistic. Uh where it goes wrong, let's say Trevor's healthy, but you your your defense is really thin. You say we have luxury pick and Travis Hunter, and yeah, fine, we might, but uh uh defensively we're extremely thin. We've seen the backups in that one game in the preseason. There it there's a big drop-off. And Jacksonville is playing less home games, two in in London this year, with how the schedule flip flops, and the home games we have is a reduced capacity of 42,000 because of the the uh the renovation. So so maybe your home field advantage is not quite as good. And and you start lot losing uh a toss-up to the Texans or the Cowboys or uh some of these other teams that that you end up playing. Maybe you split with the Colts. So yeah, I I think there's a very real possibility where Jacksonville is that disappointing 7 and 10-ish range, like we were um the year after we made the playoffs uh a few years ago.
SPEAKER_00So I'm gonna go ceiling. Uh the ceiling is essentially what you hit last year in terms of win total. It's hard to win in the NFL more than 13 games. 13 and 4 is a very impressive record. There is a world where you get away. If they went 13 and 4 again, that's crazy because our schedule is twice as hard. For sure. But like there are things too in your favor that could pan out. Obviously, we've debated Travis Hunter a bunch. He could pan out and be a star that you really didn't see a ton last year, certainly not at the end of the season when the Jaguars were playing at their best. If he can come ball out at corner, give you production at wide receiver, Parker Washington plays like he did at the end of the season, and BTJ can play like he did his rookie season. And if the the three-man running back tandem can perform at a a similar level to what the Jags were at, and Trevor Lawrence takes another step with his second year with Liam Cohen, then I think it's 13-4. And look, the AFC to me is wide open. The ceiling is you make it to the Super Bowl.
SPEAKER_01This is the year I think that it's gonna be the most wide open because of the as JT pointed out, the coach turnover. Yep. I don't I don't believe in Jesse Minter uh for the Ravens. Uh, I don't really believe in Joe Brady of the Bills, Steelers, Brown, did I I don't believe in any of those coaches, to be honest. Yeah, the only one that I think that got better are the Giants uh and possibly the Titans.
SPEAKER_00NFC, and you're not super worried about a title run from them. Uh no offense to my good friend Ron, who's a die hard Giants fan. But yeah, I I and I say this to you, Joey, offline. I think the ceiling is can the Jags have a Knicks-like run where they surprise a lot of people, they win in a wide open east for the NFL wide open AFC, and then the West beats themselves up so much, and the NFC beats themselves up so much that they can, you know, get lucky on the right day. There is a world for that. The floor to me is higher than y'all to. I think the floor is nine and eight. The AFC South is not great. And if Trevor is healthy, you've seen Trevor have nine and eight years where we're like, man, this is kind of ugly, where the defense looks pathetic. So nine and eight feels like the floor, but I also agree I my prediction's not that much higher than the floor. I give it 10 and 7. The Jags make the playoffs again, which we talked last week, would be amazing. First time since the 90s to make it back-to-back years. And I just don't know. I think if you're 10 and 7 and you lose in the first round of the playoffs, you're gonna feel like, man, are we kind of stuck? Uh what sort of moves do we need to make? But if you can win that first game, like you said, Joey, then I think you're saying, okay, we we're making progress. Let's let's go all in finally for the next year when we have a first round pick. But 10 and 7, and to me, man, it's a coin flip of can we get out of the first round?
SPEAKER_01I do want to point out one person that has weirdly not been talked about, I feel like, at all, and I think is actually one of the biggest sleeper needs to be have an incredible year. It's get Dennis Gardek is going to be a huge part of this defense. I thought he played well last year, but he's gonna be a lot of I think you're gonna possibly move Trayvon in on the inside sometimes, and he's gonna drop down, he's gonna have to play linebacker, like he's gonna be all over the place. And if he has an incredible season, then I think the defense has a good season. But if he ends up being more of like an Andrew Wingard who flashes but never is really consistent, then it's gonna be a hard time for that defense.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Gardecks, one to watch, a lot to watch. We've got the follow us on all podcast platforms, Apple, Spotify on YouTube as well. And we'll be back. Let us know. Go over to YouTube, drop some comments. What content do you want us to hit next week? We'll break down the game and start to get ready. We're just weeks away from week one against the Browns, and hopefully a Jag season a lot closer to that ceiling. Again, though, AFC's wide open. Who knows? I don't know how long it'll be till we get a JT calling for the Jags Super Bowl. It's not yet, but we'll see. But let's sound it off as we always do, Jags Bros.
