I know that you're talking to Minister Bowen's"},{"startTime":61.85,"endTime":65.53,"body":"office pretty much on a daily basis and a lot of people want to understand,"},{"startTime":65.93,"endTime":69.29,"body":"you know, what has the rebate looked like up until the end of April,"},{"startTime":69.77,"endTime":73.45,"body":"what's the trend look like since the 1st of May and where"},{"startTime":73.45,"endTime":77.13,"body":"the battery rebate's heading from here, mate? Yeah, I think that's right"},{"startTime":77.13,"endTime":80.97,"body":"and I'm really excited to talk to you about that. It's a really interesting time"},{"startTime":80.97,"endTime":83.29,"body":"post the 1st of May and in the lead up to the 1st of May,"},{"startTime":83.29,"endTime":87.07,"body":"there's a lot is shifting and I think the next"},{"startTime":87.07,"endTime":90.31,"body":"few months are going to be really important. So I'm really excited to dig into"},{"startTime":90.31,"endTime":93.75,"body":"some numbers and where I see it going. I get out and talk to a"},{"startTime":93.75,"endTime":96.63,"body":"lot of the industry and the politicians. So I think I've got a good bird's"},{"startTime":96.63,"endTime":100.39,"body":"eye view of what's happening in the industry. Yeah, really exciting. A lot of people"},{"startTime":100.39,"endTime":104.23,"body":"have invested a lot in this industry at the moment due to the cheaper"},{"startTime":104.23,"endTime":107.87,"body":"home battery scheme. So we all want to know what's happening with it and where"},{"startTime":107.87,"endTime":111.51,"body":"the certainty is in the scheme. You know, we're a wholesale"},{"startTime":111.51,"endTime":115.31,"body":"distributor and there's many other suppliers in the industry which have invested a lot in"},{"startTime":115.31,"endTime":118.93,"body":"staff and stock and warehouses. Installers have invested a lot"},{"startTime":119.89,"endTime":122.97,"body":"in staff as well. There's a lot of people that have a lot on the"},{"startTime":122.97,"endTime":126.09,"body":"line, so I know that that's going to be a really interesting point people want"},{"startTime":126.09,"endTime":129.65,"body":"to hear about, but we've got some great things we're going to talk about today."},{"startTime":130.61,"endTime":134.29,"body":"The first one though, I suppose I want to challenge you a little bit, David,"},{"startTime":134.29,"endTime":138.05,"body":"because there's something I'm a bit concerned about. I've been in this industry"},{"startTime":138.13,"endTime":141.93,"body":"since 2009 and when I started in this industry, there"},{"startTime":141.93,"endTime":145.65,"body":"were rebates for solar panels and then the renewable energy target"},{"startTime":145.65,"endTime":149.31,"body":"kicked in with double incentives there, where they had times"},{"startTime":149.31,"endTime":153.11,"body":"multiplier on credits and all this stuff. That brought in hundreds"},{"startTime":153.11,"endTime":156.91,"body":"of brands of solar panels that didn't stay in the market."},{"startTime":156.99,"endTime":160.67,"body":"They came in when the rebates boomed and in those early days"},{"startTime":160.67,"endTime":164.43,"body":"they left the market and they left what we call solar orphans. So there's"},{"startTime":164.43,"endTime":168.07,"body":"homeowners and business owners out there that have solar panels, 25 year"},{"startTime":168.07,"endTime":171.83,"body":"warranties on them where the manufacturers left and they have"},{"startTime":171.83,"endTime":175.32,"body":"no warranty at all. Now, under the Cheaper Home"},{"startTime":175.32,"endTime":178.6,"body":"Batteries scheme, as long as a manufacturer gets the right"},{"startTime":178.6,"endTime":182.12,"body":"certificates together they can get on the approved list and"},{"startTime":182.44,"endTime":186.08,"body":"theoretically they can enter the market on the first day of this rebate and"},{"startTime":186.08,"endTime":189.32,"body":"leave as the rebate winds down, leaving battery orphans."},{"startTime":189.8,"endTime":193.56,"body":"Now, us at Supply Partners, we do"},{"startTime":193.56,"endTime":196.96,"body":"something different at our business to make sure the"},{"startTime":196.96,"endTime":200.04,"body":"retailers and installers we sell to are protected. We choose"},{"startTime":200.04,"endTime":203.53,"body":"manufacturers that have been in the market for a long time"},{"startTime":203.69,"endTime":207.17,"body":"that have established teams in Australia and have proven they're"},{"startTime":207.17,"endTime":210.69,"body":"committed to the Australian market. We do all that due"},{"startTime":210.69,"endTime":214.25,"body":"diligence and people know Supply Partners and know that the products we"},{"startTime":214.25,"endTime":217.93,"body":"sell, they're going to be around and be supported. But I'm seeing so many"},{"startTime":217.93,"endTime":221.77,"body":"products, mate, that have come into this market as this rebate started and I'm very"},{"startTime":221.77,"endTime":225.37,"body":"concerned they're going to leave as soon as the rebate starts to wind down."},{"startTime":226.01,"endTime":228.81,"body":"What is the Smart Energy Council doing to protect us in this way?"},{"startTime":229.78,"endTime":233.62,"body":"Yeah, I mean, I think what you raise is a really important point. And"},{"startTime":234.34,"endTime":237.98,"body":"just to sort of answer your question in general terms first"},{"startTime":237.98,"endTime":240.5,"body":"before, in specifics,"},{"startTime":241.94,"endTime":245.14,"body":"I think the thing about the battery market, what we've got to"},{"startTime":245.22,"endTime":248.78,"body":"realise is that we are now an"},{"startTime":248.78,"endTime":252.38,"body":"essential part of a household and that is going to"},{"startTime":252.38,"endTime":255.78,"body":"increase more and more with electric vehicles and just household"},{"startTime":255.78,"endTime":259.629,"body":"electrification. So, you know, we will be like"},{"startTime":259.629,"endTime":263.469,"body":"the fridge or the washing machine, every household will have one. So there is a"},{"startTime":263.469,"endTime":266.629,"body":"real, we've been through this period of,"},{"startTime":268.709,"endTime":271.909,"body":"this extraordinary period of the last 12 months, this huge boom"},{"startTime":272.469,"endTime":276.149,"body":"and now that this may be, I think, settling down into"},{"startTime":276.149,"endTime":279.629,"body":"something that's a bit more sustainable, hopefully a bit less boom"},{"startTime":279.629,"endTime":283.309,"body":"bust, what I think the industry needs to do, and that includes the"},{"startTime":283.309,"endTime":287.029,"body":"Smart Energy Council, as the industry body is focus on some of those"},{"startTime":287.029,"endTime":290.85,"body":"quality issues that you've just raised, sustainability issues."},{"startTime":290.93,"endTime":294.77,"body":"Because what we want to be is an industry that people trust,"},{"startTime":295.65,"endTime":299.37,"body":"that people know that they buy products that work and"},{"startTime":299.37,"endTime":302.77,"body":"that they're supported. So I'm really open to that"},{"startTime":302.77,"endTime":306.61,"body":"discussion, I think with the industry about how do we. In a range"},{"startTime":306.61,"endTime":310.13,"body":"of fronts, you know, things like, as well, not only what you've raised, like"},{"startTime":311.25,"endTime":314.89,"body":"making sure inverter sizes are correct when they're being installed, making sure that the"},{"startTime":314.89,"endTime":318.05,"body":"ratio of panels is right to the battery size, there's a whole lot of things"},{"startTime":318.05,"endTime":321.71,"body":"like that. And then the support that's going to be provided. I think"},{"startTime":321.71,"endTime":325.15,"body":"we need to take responsibility for as an industry to say,"},{"startTime":325.95,"endTime":329.47,"body":"let's make sure that we are promoting ourselves"},{"startTime":329.55,"endTime":333.35,"body":"as a sustainable industry that is focused"},{"startTime":333.35,"endTime":337.069,"body":"on quality for the long term so that we build long term relationships"},{"startTime":337.069,"endTime":340.87,"body":"with customers. I think there's a role for us to play in pushing that"},{"startTime":340.87,"endTime":344.47,"body":"and having that discussion. I'm really pleased that"},{"startTime":344.47,"endTime":347.17,"body":"you and supply partners are"},{"startTime":348.29,"endTime":351.69,"body":"sort of pushing us on that. I think that's great and I'm happy to be"},{"startTime":351.69,"endTime":355.49,"body":"pushed on that. And I think your approach to it as a business, that you"},{"startTime":355.81,"endTime":359.65,"body":"take it seriously and therefore that when people"},{"startTime":359.65,"endTime":363.45,"body":"trade with you, they know that you take it seriously, you've given it consideration. I"},{"startTime":363.45,"endTime":367.13,"body":"think that's really important. But just I think for the sector"},{"startTime":367.13,"endTime":369.69,"body":"over the next year or so, we really need to look at ourselves and say,"},{"startTime":369.69,"endTime":373.42,"body":"ok, how do we make sure we're not just ticking"},{"startTime":373.5,"endTime":376.86,"body":"the minimum regulatory standards that we're building a sector that is"},{"startTime":377.34,"endTime":381.14,"body":"here for the long term, that will be there to provide customer support, that has"},{"startTime":381.14,"endTime":384.54,"body":"a base in Australia and that ongoing support, mate, like you said,"},{"startTime":384.78,"endTime":388.499,"body":"retailers and installers need to take responsibility, they need to think"},{"startTime":388.499,"endTime":391.82,"body":"about it. I think the thing that we are telling the market every day is,"},{"startTime":392.62,"endTime":396.26,"body":"yes, we want to see new innovative products coming into market, but if"},{"startTime":396.26,"endTime":399.9,"body":"they've just entered the market as the rebate started, they don't have a"},{"startTime":399.9,"endTime":403.74,"body":"place of business in this country, a proper office set up with real"},{"startTime":403.74,"endTime":407.32,"body":"staff to have technical support, to have warranty support,"},{"startTime":407.8,"endTime":411.48,"body":"they haven't shown commitment to the market. So if you're a participant in the"},{"startTime":411.48,"endTime":415.28,"body":"Australian solar industry and battery industry and you go and jump on"},{"startTime":415.28,"endTime":418.92,"body":"one of these products that's just been approved and they haven't got those"},{"startTime":418.92,"endTime":422.56,"body":"teams in the country, I'd really say they're not being responsible to"},{"startTime":422.56,"endTime":426.04,"body":"the outcomes for the homeowner or business owner. And"},{"startTime":426.28,"endTime":429.24,"body":"that's not the type of behaviour I want to see in this industry. So"},{"startTime":429.88,"endTime":433.56,"body":"I'm challenging you, but I'm also challenging the retailers and installers out there"},{"startTime":433.56,"endTime":437.33,"body":"to choose products that are going to be around for the industry. Yeah, I mean,"},{"startTime":437.33,"endTime":440.53,"body":"I think the only thing I would say is, I mean Australia has been the"},{"startTime":440.53,"endTime":444.33,"body":"hottest battery market in the world for the last 12 months and we"},{"startTime":444.33,"endTime":448.13,"body":"are now, I think it emerged the third biggest battery market in the world"},{"startTime":449.09,"endTime":452.45,"body":"by numbers for a tiny little country. So"},{"startTime":453.57,"endTime":456.61,"body":"what does that mean? That means there's been a lot of new entrants"},{"startTime":458.37,"endTime":461.73,"body":"and I think that's a great thing. Like that's good, that pushes the rest of"},{"startTime":461.73,"endTime":465.57,"body":"the sector. That requires innovation, that's a bit of price competition"},{"startTime":465.81,"endTime":468.91,"body":"in the end is not unhealthy, that makes us better, leaner"},{"startTime":469.79,"endTime":473.51,"body":"and ultimately better for the end users. So I"},{"startTime":473.51,"endTime":476.67,"body":"really want to see new entrants coming in. But I agree that"},{"startTime":477.23,"endTime":480.83,"body":"if you're coming here, you need to be committed to this market"},{"startTime":480.83,"endTime":484.67,"body":"and why wouldn't you be? We will remain a huge market for"},{"startTime":485.63,"endTime":489.35,"body":"the foreseeable future. So if you come and you are"},{"startTime":489.35,"endTime":492.55,"body":"going to trade in this market, you should take that seriously and you should take"},{"startTime":492.55,"endTime":495.95,"body":"a long term obligation seriously. I think that's, as the industry"},{"startTime":496.03,"endTime":499.77,"body":"body, I think that's in everyone's"},{"startTime":499.77,"endTime":503.57,"body":"interests as well and that's the sort of thing we'd encourage. So I'm really"},{"startTime":503.57,"endTime":506.13,"body":"glad you're really putting this on the agenda. It's something"},{"startTime":507.49,"endTime":510.73,"body":"I certainly heard as well when we were talking about changes to the cheaper home"},{"startTime":510.73,"endTime":514.57,"body":"battery program last year. So it's definitely something that we need to look"},{"startTime":514.57,"endTime":518.41,"body":"at as a sector and you know, good on you for pushing it and"},{"startTime":518.41,"endTime":521.13,"body":"good on you for, you know, I'm happy to have my feet held to the"},{"startTime":521.13,"endTime":524.97,"body":"fire. That's the sort of thing that we should be focused on and we should"},{"startTime":524.97,"endTime":528.05,"body":"discuss more as a sector. That's what the SEC's always been known about."},{"startTime":528.67,"endTime":532.27,"body":"So let's, you know, try to see some guardrails put in place. And I,"},{"startTime":532.51,"endTime":536.11,"body":"I'm here to work with you guys and I know many other great industry participants"},{"startTime":536.11,"endTime":538.95,"body":"are, but I think there needs to be some changes there. So I look forward"},{"startTime":538.95,"endTime":542.63,"body":"to seeing those evolve as you, as you really now got your"},{"startTime":542.63,"endTime":546.31,"body":"feet under the desk. But you definitely got some big challenges straight away. That's"},{"startTime":546.31,"endTime":550.07,"body":"right. So David, you were talking about us being one of the biggest battery markets"},{"startTime":550.07,"endTime":553.75,"body":"in the world, made 10 gigawatt hours put in in this"},{"startTime":553.75,"endTime":556.97,"body":"scheme in under 12 months, like 10 gigawatt hours. It is"},{"startTime":557.36,"endTime":561.12,"body":"huge, mate. And that has actually now started to"},{"startTime":561.12,"endTime":564.48,"body":"reflect through to what I think is around three weeks ago,"},{"startTime":564.96,"endTime":568.76,"body":"wholesale electricity prices going down. And just in the last couple"},{"startTime":568.76,"endTime":572.48,"body":"of days, we've seen retail prices from the Australian"},{"startTime":572.48,"endTime":575.44,"body":"energy regulator. So that's the actual bills to"},{"startTime":575.6,"endTime":579.2,"body":"homeowners and business owners. They're going down now because"},{"startTime":579.2,"endTime":582.96,"body":"of solar and battery investment made under this great scheme."},{"startTime":582.96,"endTime":586.5,"body":"Yep. So power prices are going down in this country"},{"startTime":586.74,"endTime":590.1,"body":"for the first time in a really long time. Power prices are going down"},{"startTime":590.34,"endTime":593.1,"body":"now. Why are they going down? It's because of the people that will be listening"},{"startTime":593.1,"endTime":596.86,"body":"to this podcast. They're the ones that have done it. It's the installers, it's everyone"},{"startTime":596.86,"endTime":600.06,"body":"involved in this industry who've put 10 gigawatts into over"},{"startTime":600.06,"endTime":603.54,"body":"400,000 homes in like under a year. Right. Just"},{"startTime":604.34,"endTime":608.02,"body":"unbelievable outcome. Just. Who would have thought. The government didn't think it."},{"startTime":608.42,"endTime":612.15,"body":"No one thought it. So that's amazing outcome that has"},{"startTime":612.15,"endTime":615.99,"body":"brought power prices down and the other. It's done a number of other things"},{"startTime":615.99,"endTime":619.79,"body":"that are amazing. So you had. Over summer, you had"},{"startTime":619.79,"endTime":623.39,"body":"a pretty hot summer. And in the east"},{"startTime":623.39,"endTime":627.11,"body":"coast in particular, where a lot of most of the country live in previous"},{"startTime":627.11,"endTime":630.79,"body":"years, when you've had those hot summers, you know, you get the premier"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":632.15,"endTime":635.91,"body":"00', clock, hey, everyone,"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":636.61,"endTime":640.21,"body":"you know, turn off your washing machine, turn off your dishwasher, we gotta"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":640.21,"endTime":643.93,"body":"reduce our power. Cause we're hitting too high. That"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":643.93,"endTime":647.45,"body":"didn't happen. That we didn't. No problems this summer. Why?"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":647.45,"endTime":651.13,"body":"Because people had installed solar and batteries and they get home"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":651.13,"endTime":653.93,"body":"and they turn the air conditioner on and they're pulling out of their battery. So"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":653.93,"endTime":657.41,"body":"we could run our households without"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":657.89,"endTime":661.33,"body":"ministers worrying about it. That's the first time on a hot summer that's also happened"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":661.33,"endTime":665.14,"body":"in a very long time. So it's just how they build the grid"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":665.14,"endTime":668.66,"body":"for Christmas Day, mate. Yeah, that's right, exactly. So"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":668.66,"endTime":672.22,"body":"it's, it's. And the other thing, you know, people talk about the duck"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":672.22,"endTime":675.94,"body":"curve, which is. Cause your kids"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":686.26,"endTime":689.02,"body":"school uniforms are dirty and you haven't washed them for the week, you know what"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":689.02,"endTime":692.63,"body":"it's like. So all of a sudden your energy usage goes through the"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":692.63,"endTime":696.15,"body":"roof. Well, what is already happening is the flattening of that"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":696.39,"endTime":700.03,"body":"famous duck curve. So people are going home and instead of"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":700.03,"endTime":703.43,"body":"drawing from the grid, they're drawing from their battery that they've charged during the day."},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":703.83,"endTime":707.59,"body":"So that is also flattening out. And what does all this mean"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":708.15,"endTime":711.63,"body":"for people? Well, for people that have gone out and bought solar and gone out"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":711.63,"endTime":715.39,"body":"and bought batteries, they are saving money on their power bills. But"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":715.39,"endTime":719.16,"body":"you just said power prices are going down. So people that"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":719.16,"endTime":722.64,"body":"don't have solar and batteries are also benefiting. All of Australia"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":722.88,"endTime":726.32,"body":"is benefiting from the work that the people that are listening to this have done."},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":726.32,"endTime":730.12,"body":"They've brought down everyone's power bills. So it means that"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":730.12,"endTime":733.88,"body":"the whole country has benefited. What we are doing, what we are"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":733.88,"endTime":737.72,"body":"doing in this industry is bringing down power prices for all Australians, whether they have"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":737.72,"endTime":741.32,"body":"solar and a battery or not. And that's just a terrific"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":741.32,"endTime":745.09,"body":"outcome. And again it's. I know how hard people have"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":745.09,"endTime":748.57,"body":"worked, like people have been working weekends and you know, long hours"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":748.65,"endTime":751.61,"body":"to meet the demand. But the impact has been"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":752.41,"endTime":756.13,"body":"extraordinary and you know, long may it continue. And it's awesome to hear"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":756.13,"endTime":759.969,"body":"that it's actually reducing costs for people because cost of living pressures are"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":759.969,"endTime":763.45,"body":"really hard at the moment, mate. Huge. The fact that it is"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":763.45,"endTime":767.13,"body":"supporting people that don't have solar and batteries by actual retail prices coming"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":767.13,"endTime":770.65,"body":"down, it just shows this scheme is good expenditure of"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":770.65,"endTime":774.13,"body":"federal budget and I think, you know, it's been a success so far and will"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":774.13,"endTime":777.51,"body":"continue to be so. Yeah. And I think one of the things that,"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":777.91,"endTime":781.59,"body":"that shows and gives me comfort as the CEO, you know,"},{"speaker":"of your state or the energy minister going on saying at 4","startTime":781.67,"endTime":785.07,"body":"I've worked in politics, I sort of know how politics works.
